Marcy Playground

Playground I couldn't help noticing that 'Sex And Candy' song every time it came on the radio. A croony retro type of '90s pop song that implied a quirky character behind the unemotional vocals. The character is singer -songwriter John Wozniak whose eclectic tastes and influences turn this debut by the New York based Marcy Playground into a garland of many different types of flowers and thorns. From the kitschy clay sculptures on the cover to the prog-rock alert titles like 'Saint Joe On The School Bus', 'Ancient Walls Of Flowers' and 'A Cloak Of Elvinkind', this album is determined to affect your mood and leave you with a warm goofy smile. The fisrt track is 'Poppies' which is like, very subtle man! Straight into 'Sex And Candy' (so named after an ex-roomies' girlfriend commented: "Whoo! It smells like sex and candy in here") and then an uphill plod through the aforementioned trilogy. Then it's back to the quirky pop, chummy vocals and friendly instruments with a run of great songs. 'Sherry Fraser', 'Gone Crazy', 'Opium' and 'Dog And Master'. There's a touch of Frank and his Mothers in the mix here, along with the result of watching the movie 'Grease;' just a few times too many.

Marcy Playground have a diverse and melodic edge over Weezer and They Must Be Giants' snazzy word games. They tend more towards World Party's mixed musical bagisms but need to find a way to get under people's lobes. 'Sex And Candy' may do it alone but if another two tracks off this album were to chart, then this self-dedicated debut could settle into a good life as a popular and fun-filled word-of-mouth cult item.
