The Usual - Like A Vision

Following up on the success of their six-song, mid-priced release 'Six Songs From The Inside', The Usual have done it again and released another similar "extended single". Except this has seven tracks, but that is where the differences end. 'Like A Vision' is as good as its predecessor and the word is that the two CDs may be released as a single 13-track album and that would be a killer. The Usual's sound is very similar to the much-missed SA band Bright Blue in that it comes closer than any other SA band in producing a workable hybrid of rock and kwela. The reason for this is the presence in the line-up of Tom Fox of Bright Blue fame. On vocals is the Sting-like James Stewart, with Yo-yo Buys and Paul Tizzard adding the dynamite rhythm section. The opening title track is a soaring pop song, while the rest of the songs move through an assortment of styles yet still retain the clean and sparkly sound of a band who are definitely leading the charge, with Just Jinger and the Springbok Nude Girls, in the current resurrection of South African rock music. At these prices, these two mini-CDS are essential purchases. (SS) 8/10
