Bruce Cassidy and Pops Mahomed - Timeless
ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball

Timeless On the final track of pops Mahomed's last album 'Ancestral Healing' he created a piece of music that seemed to be a collage of sounds played on his wide range of indigenous instruments intended to show how these sounds alone could work together to form a South African 'New Age' opus. On 'Timeless', Pops has taken this concept and produced a whole albums worth of this type of music utilising the trumpet and EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) talents of Bruce Cassidy.
These two artists have been playing live together to great acclaim and "Timeless" is a fair indication of the music they have been producing on stage although, as with most 'New Age' music it is better appreciated while watching a sunset or chilling out after a hard night's raving. The sound is cool and soft with minimal vocals. Cassidy's languid trumpet allies gently with Pops' Mbira and Kora meanderings and the melodies are subdued and secondary to the interweaving of the two genres of instrumentation.
Bruce Cassidy has worked in the USA and Canadian Jazz worlds and played with Blood Sweat and Tears. He moved to SA in 1981 where he writes music for film and T.V. He and Pops developed these songs on a purely improvised basis with Cassidy then working to 'clean up' the resulting pieces. The title track begins with the roar of thunder accompanied by Pops' finger harp creating the sound of falling rain, that evolves into a lilting groove. "Timeless" is an excellent example of how well a cross-pollination of sophisticated Jazz styles and unsophisticated African instruments can form an album that showcases both yet results in a finished product that transcends both styles.
