Scabby Annie - Petroleum
ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball

Scabby Annie There are some SA bands who are searching for the new wave of rainbow nation rock. Scabby Annie are most definitely not among them. While their roots lie in the Nirvana/grunge sound of the early 90s, their hard and fast punk songs hark back to seminal 70s bands such as the Stiff Little Fingers and the Ramones. Building on a strong and loyal reputation on the back of some potent singles, Scabby Annie's debut album includes crowd-pleasers like 'Potato Head', 'Plastercaster' and 'Hanging Out With Dave'. Also featured is the band's popular and powerful cover of 'Stand By Me', which could cause an outbreak of manic moshing among even the most reticent of SA audiences.

With Stellenbosch emerging as a key nursery for some of the finest new SA rock bands, Scabby Annie provide proof that the East Rand can still turn out its fair share of talent. With a tough, tight and no-bullshit attitude, the 'Scabs' get the job done with a set of speedy and hooky little gems which leave you thinking that if this is their debut then we can expect bigger and better things from these Benoni boys. Their name, by the way, is not a reference to one of their groupies but rather a card game. The title of their album, 'Petroleum', is not ambiguous: it's high-octane rock all the way. (SS)
