Sipho Gumede - Humanity
ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball ball

Sipho Gumede Sipho`s a hard man, he`s seen all the bad times and now as a musician he wants to celebrate the good times but he`s not convinced that it`s all good now . The title, "UBUNTU", is a new buzz word meaning practising humanity in one`s interactions with others (I think?); yet on the cover, Sipho`s name as well as the title have bullet holes through them. It could almost be a soundtrack cover with Sipho, arms folded, staring down the main street in a sepia orange mood.

The music reflects this with a gritty jazz outer coating, with tough-talking lyrics in the middle. "Don`t mess with me" and "Sandile" recall the past and it`s place in the present, "Faces and Places" and "Hammersdale" are soft and redemptive, "Township Jive" is a happy party.

Many of the new albums coming out of South Africa these days have this paradox weaving through them. "UBUNTU", as it`s name implies, finds Sipho Gumede doing unto others with forgiveness but not forgetfulness, with straight talk and truth and with music from his heart. He`s not such a hard man but we respect him anyway. Redemption songs.
