RAMONES MUSEUM
A Ramones museum is to open in Berlin on September 16. Among the items to be displayed are one of the band's first T-shirts, a pair of Johnny Ramone's jeans, sneakers and drumsticks used by Marky Ramone, Joey Ramone's stage glove, plus the band's first album, signed by all four members.

BUY OZZY'S TOILET Fancy owning a toilet once regularly used by Ozzy? It's up for grabs on eBay. The vendor insists he has all the documented proof that Ozzy did indeed once own this facility. Apparently, it was in a house sold 17 years ago by the Prince Of Darkness to the seller's parents.

Dear rock fans,

Thanks for all the calls during last night's show and subsequent emails about how much you enjoyed the Hendrix special. Jimi was more than just a hugely talented rock 'storm-und-drang' guitar player remembered by classics like "Voodoo Chile", "Purple Haze" and the like. He was also a dynamic and sensitive songwriter as evidenced on "Castles made of sand", "Angel" and "Bold as love" ... that's the beauty of Jimi Hendrix's music - light and shade, thunder and calm, sun and moon. He is still sorely missed 35 years later but left an indelible legacy that continues to thrill and inspire milions of rock lovers around the world [read more here »»»] ..... Next week's special will be Status Quo and we will be looking at the band's career from the early psych hits like "Pictures of matchstick men" through to the 12 bar boogie of "Caroline" and "Down Down".

Rock of Ages's recommendations

I'm still groovin' to the new albums by Tony Iommi, Glenn Hughes, Jim Neversink, Les Paul and Friends, Jake E Lee, Porcupine Tree, Jack Hammer, The Tea Party, Stones and Spock's Beard so this week I am recommending some classic rock reissues that are worth investigating: Trevor Rabin Firstly I was thrilled to finally get a copy of Trevor Rabin's "Beginnings" album via a small label in the UK, our Trev was already a monster player with his early bands, Conglomeration and Rabbitt, but his supernatural talent really shone through on this, his debut album. It also coincided with his move to the UK where he released a handful of solo albums before joining Yes ... and the rest as they say is history. Do yourself a favour and lay your paws on this album, the solo on "Lovelife" is awe-inspiring!

Back Street Crawler After finally leaving Free for the last time guitarist Paul Kossoff formed a new band called Back Street Crawler, releasing a patchy debut album in 1975. However along with soulful rock vocalist, Terry Wilson Slesser and sometime Free keyboardist 'Rabbit' Bundrick, he returned to the studio to cut "2nd Street". Despite his ever increasing drug problem and ill health Koss recorded what turned out to be one of the classic rock albums of the 70's. His unique guitar tone (a '57 Les Paul) graces nine soulful blues rock tunes including the raging "Stop doing what you doing", "Selfish lover", "Some kind of happy" and one of his finest moments, "Blue Soul". Paul Kossoff never again sounded so focused and sadly passed away in 1976.

Baker Gurwitz Army Any lover of true classic rock will remember the rush of the Gun's headlong rock extravaganza "Race with the devil", from the band's debut album. Gun followed this up with another rock masterpiece "Gunsight" before disbanding and then regrouping into Three Man Army. After trying out several drummers including Buddy Miles and Carmine Appice, Adrian (guitar, vocals) and Paul (bass) Gurvitz hooked up with the Master himself, Ginger Baker, fresh from the chaotic Airforce. The result was the Baker-Gurvitz Army - throbbing 70's blues rock at it's best. Recently released is a 30 track retrospective, "Flying in and out of stardom" which brings together the cream of the short lived band's studio albums as well as some live tracks.

More news, reviews, comedy and the best in classic rock - next Thursday 8 to midnight ... see ya there!

Yours in the service of rock.

Then Now

Benjy Mudie was inducted into the South African Rock Hall Of Fame on 14th August 2002. Of Scottish origin, Mudie started out in the music industry working in record shops. He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realms of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music.
