Otis Waygood Blues Band
COMMENT

1. OTIS WAYGOOD BLUES BAND - OTIS WAYGOOD BLUES BAND

The Beatles had the White Album, Otis Waygood had the Black Album. A gatefold sleeve in striking black which opens up to 2 square feet of more...black. The band's name is written in tiny letters in white in the top right hand corner. A quite striking cover. The CD re-release is also quite striking, but not as black.
Forbidden Fruit

2. FORBIDDEN FRUIT - HOT R.S

This album cover must have caused a storm in South Africa when it was released in 1978. A man and woman together...naked!!!!! Sies!! Not only were there naked people on the cover, but the allusions to Adam & Eve are obvious.
Fathoms of Fire

3. FATHOMS OF FIRE - DOG DETACHMENT

Is it an idyllic sunrise on a peaceful valley or a vision of hell? Great contrasting colours make for a vibrant image.
Lesley Rae Dowling

4. LESLEY RAE DOWLING - LESLEY RAE DOWLING

A dramatic cover featuring the sultry silhouette of Ms. Dowling. Again it's the colours that attract one to this cover. The seaweed in the calm ocean add a great texture to the picture.
A Croak and a Grunt in the Night

5. A CROAK AND A GRUNT IN THE NIGHT - RABBITT

More naked people. This time it's those naughty Rabbitt boys. TC Rabin on the cover, Neil Cloud and Duncan Faure on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, while Ronnie Robot (unsurprisingly) is relegated to the back cover. If you ever need proof that the guitar is a phallic symbol, look no further than this cover.
Universal Men

6. UNIVERSAL MEN - JULUKA

In 1979, the image of a white man in afrocentric dress would have caused a stir. The fact that he's posing alongside a similarly attired black man is equally compelling. The pensive Johnny and stony-faced Sipho is a dramatic image. Nice touch putting the group's name on a gold bar.
Slap in the Face

7. SLAP IN THE FACE - HENRY ATE

It's the lighting of the picture of a topless Karma-Ann Swanepoel that makes this cover. A burning innocence combined with smoldering sexiness. Imagine what she'd look like with long hair.

Polynation

8. POLYNATION - ELECTRIC PETALS

The stark contrast of the "white" skin of this albino maiden against the dark skin of her fellow maidens is a remarkable image.
Celebration

9. CELEBRATION - JULIAN LAXTON BAND

"It was a really wacky afternoon doing that shot, we were so out of it (par for the course in Jhb 1976) that I managed to demolish the entire stage set by accident" so said David Flockhart, the man under Julian's right arm on the cover of this orgiastic cover. David was a member of Rubbaband.
Spiral 10. SPIRAL - TANANAS

The sepia colour of this moody shot of the group contrasts brilliantly with the green border. A great photo making for an excellent cover.
