Michelle Constant has moved her Saturday Wired show to a more roomy
three-hour slot on Saturday night. The inaugural program last week-end,
featured Tananas recorded live in the SABC studios, fresh from their
acclaimed slot on North Sea Jazz Festival and about to leave on a
world-wide tour with Womad. Michelle also chatted to award-winning UK
band Coldplay, and then moved back home to bring us all the SA music
news, and to play the best in SA music as listed on the weekly SA Rock
Digest Charts. Special guest DJ on the regular ‘Better The DJ You Know’
slot was Neil Johnson.

THE SAMA AWARDS 2001
These awards were presented at the Sandton Convention Centre last
Thursday. There were the usual media mutterings about who was nominated
and who wasn’t, how the judging was done, and so on. But in the end it
boils down to a list of winners, a handful of used acceptance speeches
and all those that we’ll never hear. So, Miriam Makeba is the Best
Female artist we’ve currently got (and her ‘Homeland’ album is the ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album - African’), and Don Laka her Male equivalent.
Selaelo Selota is the ‘Best Newcomer’ on the SA music scene and his
‘Painted Faces’ album is the ‘Best Contemporary Jazz Album’. Jabu
Khanyile and Bayete are our best group; ‘Relaxzor’ was the best rock
album (a consecutive award for the Nude Girls); and Coleske’s ‘Faith In
Love’ is both the ‘Best Pop’ and ‘Best Contemporary English’ album, so
well done to the brothers.
Someone called Dq won the best pop/rock single award with ‘Friend’, and
Mandoza’s ‘Nkalakatha’ edged out Brenda Fassie in the ‘Song of the Year’ category which was again chosen by a public vote (although the choice was limited to a ballot of 10 songs). Fassie’s ‘Amadlozi’ album did get the ‘Best Selling SA Release Award’, which is the one that is correct beyond all doubt. Tony Cox’s ‘Matabele Ants’ deservedly won the ‘Best Instrumental’ award, Zim Ngqwanana’s ‘Ingoma’ won ‘Best SA Traditional Jazz Album’, and ex-Boom Shaka singer Lebo won two awards, ‘Best Dance’ album for ‘Dream’ and ‘Best Dance Single’ for ‘Intro’, a credible double.

DORSLAND
The long-awaited third album from Richard van der Westhuizen and Lochner de Kock is here. ‘dorsland’ comes four years after their previous CD, ‘Vuurklip’, the follow-up to ‘Tussen Treine’, which achieved gold status. As with their previous albums, all the music on ‘dorsland’ is original. On two of the songs, van der Westhuizen worked in collaboration with Andre Swiegers and Hennie Aucamp.
‘dorsland’ also features keyboardist Andrew Roos, in whose Ermelo studio the album was recorded. Other contributors include Harry Knepscheldt on sax and mouth organ, Phillip Breedt on trumpet, Mark Schonau on fiddle and Ani K provides backup vocals.
Van der Westhuizen and De Kock will be strutting their new stuff at the
Oudtshoorn Festival which kicks off this weekend, where Van der
Westhuizen can also be seen in his main festival, self-penned cabaret
‘Doringdraad’. In this production, he’s joined on stage by Ani-K and
Karen Wessels and a great backing band, overseen by music director
Andrew Roos.

AUTUMN SUNWAYS STYLE
'Style' is a stunning acoustic rock song off the soon to be released 'The Moon Is A Spoon' CD from Sunways. Fans of the Jayhawks, Crowded House and R.E.M. will love this track with its gently strummed guitars and fragile, yet intense, vocals. 'Everyone goes out of style' they sing... hopefully this music never will. The second track on the CD single, 'Colour Me In' is a complete contrast to 'Style'. One minute and 50 seconds of rocket-powered glam that Bowie would have loved for Ziggy Stardust, and a song that Suede would love to have written. Can't wait for the full CD to hear what else Sunways have to offer. (BC)

WONDERBOOM CALL THE CHEMIST
With rave reviews of their performance at last week’s Southern Cross
Festival still ringing in their ears, and hopefully easing them through
the disappointment of missing that ‘Best Rock Album’ SAMA Award, Gauteng rock band Wonderboom have unveiled the first single from their upcoming album on the David Gresham Records label. This sequel to their ‘Never, Ever, Ever...’ EP will be paying tribute to some classic SA rock artists and songs. The new single is the band’s interpretation of the Falling Mirror 1986 hit song, ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’. Wonderboom’s release of this cover also timeously coincides with the April CD release of the original Falling Mirror concept album, ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’ on CD on the Retro Fresh label. The original version of this song featured the sinister Dylanesque vocals and lyrics of Neilen Mirror and the glorious guitar licks of Allan Faull, and still receives consistent airplay on SA radio stations.
The song tells of "Johnny’s" obsession with, and rejection by, a female
pharmacist. This was based on a series of incidents between Nielen and
‘Collette’, who used to assist him when he visited his chemist in
Wynberg during the early ‘80’s. Nielen is still a customer at the same
Chemist, and is well known to all the staff. Strangely enough, when the
Digest asked Nielen if he had heard the new version, he said that he
hadn’t yet, but he knew of its existence because one of the staff at his Chemist had heard it on the radio and had told him about it. Hence the alternative title for this piece which is "The Chemist Called Johnny To Tell Him About Wonderboom’s New Version Of ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’".
Wonderboom’s new version is a looser, rockier interpretation and it will be interesting to see how it fares on the radio. The lyrics have been mildly adjusted to exclude some dubious concepts, and it is a worthy appetizer to what is shaping up as a fascinating album release.
Wonderboom have only released two EP’s - ‘Is It’ and ‘Never, Ever, Ever, Ever’ - since forming in 1997 from the remnants of The Electric Petals and Eight Legged Groove Machine. With the full album out in the near future, special attention will be paid to the band’s upcoming
appearances at both the 5FM Easter Rock Festival (Sat April 14) and
Splashy Fen (Sat April 28).

AMABALA’S ‘BUSHED OUT’ PARTIES
AMABALA LTD (London), who are working to arrange music festivals and
concerts in London and the UK featuring SA bands and musicians, are also currently running a nightclub at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire every
Saturday night. These evenings have been going for about 6 weeks and
are already attracting over 500 people a night. The venue has some of
the best lighting and sound in the country and is the only club in
London where one can hear SA, New Zealand and Australian contemporary
music.

HAWK’S ‘AFRICAN DAY’ ALBUM RELEASED ON RETRO FRESH
31 years later, the dawn rises on the long awaited reissue of Hawk`s
classic Afro rock masterpiece ‘African Day’. It was officially released
on Monday 2nd April (distributed by BMG ) and has been digitally
restored with four bonus live tracks from early 1971 as well as extended artwork incorporating fantastic liner notes by Owen Coetzer and many never-seen-before photos from the band's own archives.

THE AFRICAN DOPE SA TOUR
The big names on the African Dope Records label hit the road for a
nationwide tour of South Africa during April 2001. For many living
outside the Cape, this will be their first opportunity to catch this
crazy and cool crop of new Cape Town acts, and maybe even buy these
albums. There’s Moodphase 5ive, fresh from kick-starting the North Sea
Jazz Festival’s first night party last weekend, and riding high on the

DREAMSHOP - CLEAR
We’ve had two taster EP singles from this duo, ‘Strange’ and ‘Satisfy’,
and now Gavin Goldberg and Marc Hendriks have released their full debut
album, ‘Clear’, on the BMG SA label. Last week Gavin Goldberg saw
‘Painted Faces’, the album he produced for Selaelo Selota, pick up two
SAMA Awards (‘Best Contemporary Jazz Album’ and ‘Best Newcomer’). And
it was those production talents he brought to bear on this 11-song
collaborative collection of new SA funky soul. The title of the album as illustrated by the expansiveness of the veld and sky on the cover
implies something a little more rustic then what’s inside. It’s mostly
smoothly produced jazz-pop that would have both jazz and r ‘n b radio
station playlisters scratching their collective heads. These songs fall
somewhere between those two related styles, but have some unusual timing and vocal patterns that gives ‘Clear’ its own unique character.
Dreamshop’s SAMA Award-nominated song ‘Satisfy’ is here again to intro
the album and there’s also ‘Wasteland’, ‘Retribution’, and the vocals of Amanda Tiffin and Qanita Adams on ‘Tinsel Town’. (SS)

CONSPIRARE (THE VERY BEST OF) - LESLEY RAE DOWLING (Retro Fresh)
This latest release on the Retro Fresh label is this essential
collection of the very best songs by Lesley Rae Dowling, whose sexy, low growl of a voice and sure hand with a tune and lyric first amazed Tully McCully, then Benjy Mudie, and eventually, a gob-smacked ‘80’s SA music scene. Over the next decade Lesley Rae Dowling blossomed into SA’s top pop diva and was never too far from the charts and awards ceremonies with her seemingly endless supply of strong and tuneful compositions.
The best 16 tracks are all here, with short explanations on each song by Ms Dowling herself. These comments add an extra dimension to Dave
Chislett’s excellent liner notes and the songs themselves. From ‘The
Spaniard’, Grips Of Emotion’, and ‘Innocent Child’ to ‘Unravished
Brides’, ‘The Rose’, and ‘You And I’, ‘Conspirare’ tells the story of
this supremely talented SA singer songwritewr who could have been a
contender on the international pop scene but decided to turn away from
the dislocation that her planned ‘exile’ from the very unpopular SA of
the ‘80’s would have caused. Now happily settled on a farm in the
Helderberg Mountains above Stellenbosch, Lesley Rae Dowling can drop
‘Conspirare’ on to her own CD player and listen through this very worthy body of work with great pride and maximum enjoyment, and so should you.

LIVE - TANANAS
Sony Music is proud to announce the release of Tananas’ new album
‘Live’, which is a collection of new and classic material recorded live
at The Bassline in Johannesburg during 2000. There is a strong
possibility that this album’s name may be changed to ‘Live In Joburg’,
and given a different cover to its original design. ‘Live’ has been
Tananas’ focus through 2000 and into 2001, and the band is currently
touring the WOMAD 2000/1 circuit and has played/will play in front of
audiences in Italy, Australia, UK, US, Singapore, Canary Islands,
Sweden, Greece and Spain. Tananas are also confirmed to tour the UK and
Spain with The Drummers Of Burundi and Chartwell Dutiro over May 2001.
The classic Tananas trio, Steve Newman (guitar), Gito Baloi (bass) and Ian Herman (drums), played a triumphant hometown set at the North Sea Jazz Festival’s ‘Baseline’ Stage last weekend. Their consistent gigging finds them in sharp and sparkling form and the large crowd, already buoyed up by the dynamic world dance sounds of Da Lata and Zuco 103, roared their appreciation after every song.
A percentage of the proceeds from "Live" are to be donated to Feedsa.

TONY ASHTON
When Tony Ashton received a telegram from Brian Epstein he automatically thought he had been recruited as the keyboard player for the Beatles. In actual fact he was offered the job to perform with a top Liverpool band, the Remo Four. The Remo Four were graduates from the Cavern Club and proceeded to perform rhythm back-up for singers like Cilla Black and Tommy Quickly. Although the Remo Four originally started out as a country and western outfit under the name Johnny Sandon and the Remo Four, the unique charisma and talent of Tony Ashton, soon dissolved any one-man show hopefuls. At that stage the line-up included Phil Rogers, bass, Colin Manly, vocals and guitar, and Roy Dyke, drums.
The Remo four became part of the expanding Epstein empire and were shipped off to the Star club in Hamburg to take over the Beatles spot. Their style of music was more jazz and blues based and thanks to Warner Brothers, they released their first album, "Smile". At that stage Tony Played a Vox Continental organ because he could not afford a Hammond B3. Times were hard, but in Tony's own words, this was his most enjoyable period of his life. After two years in Hamburg and the height of Beatlemania, the Remo Four had the honour of backing the fab four during a tour of Sweden. During this period the Remo were playing with Jimmy Justice. Due to this association, George Harrison of the Beatles, invited the Remo Four to assist on his first solo album, "Wonderwall". When the excitement began to wear off, they headed back to the UK and backed up Billy J Kramer, after the Dakotas had left him. Tony and Roy got despondent with the monotonous cabaret and eventually got sacked deliberately.
Then came forth a power combination with the likes of bassist Kim Gardner formerly with Ron Wood's beat group the Birds. The birth of Ashton, Gardner and Dyke were a guaranteed sell out at all clubs and music halls due to their individual musical talent. They released their first hit single, "Resurrection Shuffle" which charted in the UK and across the waters in the United States. This track reached number 3 in 1971 and was also covered by Tom Jones. At that stage Ashton, Gardner and Dyke were regulars at Ronny Scotts with Herbie Mann. They broke up in 1974 and Tony left to join Deep Purple's Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice.
During the period of the seventies, Tony worked with Tucky Buzzard, Third World War, and Green Bullfrog. Gardner and Dyke did continual session work with the Family and Jerry Lee Lewis. Roy Dyke later joined the power rock combination of Badger. During Tony Ashton's period with Jon Lord, various singles were released such as "Ballad of Mister Giver" and "We're Gonna Make It." A classic 1977 release called "Malice in Wonderland" under the group "PAL" (Paice, Ashton and Lord), was often thought to be the new wave of Deep Purple but sadly the English crowds were looking for a more guitar driven group (a la Blackmore).
Since then Ashton has concentrated on producing and also appeared at the all star concert for Kampuchea in 1979. Two months ago, Tony Ashton wowed the audience at the Green Dolphin at the Cape Town waterfront with an amazing combination of jazz and blues. Although not well marketed, the old dog showed South African audience that in time not only do you mature, but your playing becomes diverse and creative.

Back in the Sixties lots of white boys tried to go back to their rock roots and play the blues. Some became rather good at the blues, despite suffering and paying their dues in white middle-class suburban places like London, San Francisco, and... Bulawayo. Paul Butterfield, The Stones, and Frijid Pink sounded authentic. Now the Otis Waygood Blues Band is added to my list of bands who not only successfully imitated the blues but created some original songs.
I wish I knew where I read this definition of the blues so I could credit the author: "The blues is music about feeling bad that makes people feel good."
Much of Otis Waygood's authentic blues sound comes from the strong, raw
vocals of Rob Zipper. Then there's the big bass of Alan Zipper, so full
it's almost palpable. The guitar work is real electric blues, too, by Leigh Sager, Rob Zipper, and Benny Miller. There's a cool sax on many tracks, thanks to Rob Zipper. Martin Johnson's flute adds a neat touch to the Otis Waygood Blues Band tight blues rock sound.
Speaking of the flute, check it out on 'Help Me', a Willie Dixon and Ralph Bass composition. This is a trotting blues number (somewhat faster than the usual walking blues), with a proud beat. After a few bars of the mouth organ, in comes the flute for a turn, and it sounds perfectly natural, perfectly bluesy. Aside from the intriguing flute, there's a wailing mouth organ, and a honkin' sax.
I've heard people say they prefer vinyl to CDs because vinyl records sound "warmer". For the first time, I know what they mean, but it's by listening to a CD made from a vinyl source that I first hear the warm sound. The remastering is excellent on this CD.
Otis Waygood's Blues Band plays convincing and sincere electrified blues. This, their first album, has six original tunes and a couple of traditional arrangements. The remaining four numbers are their takes on other people's songs, especially their hit 'Fever', a hot cover of the tune made famous by the sultry Peggy Lee.
'You're Late Miss Kate' is the rollicking opening track. Track two, 'Watch 'n Chain', sounds like a futuristic blues song. Mostly instrumental, it embodies cool. 'Help Me' is also cool, and perhaps sums up the sound of the album, or maybe 'I'm Happy' represents the album well, or maybe....
Tracks 10, 11, and 12 are ballsy numbers. I've grown accustomed to CD bonus tracks being nice, but plainly not as strong as the other songs. That's not so with these bonus tracks (from the 1971 Otis Waygood album 'Ten Light Claps and a Scream'). After a strong album, 'Devil Bones' and both parts of 'You Can Do' provide the big finish.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
LOVE POWER - WANDA ARLETTI
It's not just the cover version of 'Son of a Preacherman' that makes me think of Dusty Springfield when listening to this Beat Group era album. This album is quite far removed from her quirky girlie-voiced hit 'Zanzibar' (SA #2 in November 1970). That's not to say that 'Zanzibar' is dismissable, it's a great example of fun pop.
Wanda's voice is very strong and shines here, especially on the title track, 'Take another little piece of my heart' and 'Son of a Preacherman'. She is accompanied by some wonderful brass arrangements which give the songs body and a rich texture. The backing vocals which include the Peanut Butter Conspiracy's Una Valli add to this full sound.
There are a few tracks that end up sounding a little like songs from a
Broadway musical which detract from the beat sound of the album with Wanda in fine Elaine Paige style voice. However these are few and far between and in some cases it's only part of the song that sounds off-beat.
For any Bats fans there's a cover of their song 'Something is wrong with me' and any Eddie Eckstein completists out there will be pleased to note that he bangs the drums on this album.
Wanda had the looks, the voice and the full blown backing of the musicians on this album to make 'Love Power' a top class female South African beat album.

Commentary:
The hard rock of Badfinger and Led Zeppelin made way in the top 10 for the big voice of Tom Jones {and still going strong 30 years later with the theme from "The Emperor's New Groove" - ed} and a one-off hit from The Mixtures from down under. Badfinger had spent 11 weeks in the top 20, 10 of which were in the top 10, including a week at the top spot. Dave Mills continued climbing towards the coveted top spot which was still occupied by The Archies. Lynn Anderson's 'Rose Garden' was on it's way down. This Joe South-penned tune was riding high in the UK charts (number 3 this week) at the same time.
Lower in the charts, Judy Collins' 'Amazing Grace' was a new entry in the top 20, Peanut Butter Conspiracy dropped from 11 to 14 with 'Understanding', Beat Unit remained static at 16 with 'Carnival Candyman' while Lance James jumped 2 places with 'Vicky'.
Those of you who catch Stephen Segerman's slot on the Bruce Millar show on SAFM will be interested to note who was at number 1 this week in 1976 (see below).

SPERM DONORS NEEDED?
Myself (Rhinus) and Tania who is currently formally known as "Sperm",
are desperate for assistance in getting our music created and produced
as soon as possible (we are not going to stay young forever, so the
faster the better). We are heading in the direction of Alternative
Afrikaans as well as English, inspired by artists such as: Nine Inch
Nails, Tori Amos, K's Choise Corn and the Troggs with a little feel of
Goth, rock, hardcore and dance. We have previously worked with David
Jooste (a great guy!!) who has helped us a lot. In 1998 we managed to
end up as one of the 10 finalists in the "Vuurdoop" competition launched by SABC2's "Geraas" and Beeld. In the year 2000, we managed, with the wonderful help of David and Marco to be amongst the first 6 finalists. However no winner was announced.
Previously most of our work was done by computer. Additional guitar work by the brilliant Jean Oostehuizen was also done and added. We would now however like to take ourselves to the public (on stage), and therefore now need to find musicians who will be willing to join us in becoming the most weird, fun-full, interesting, kick-ass band ever known in the Millennium. The financial aspect however is a heartbreaking situation. If there's anybody out there who might know how to go about in getting a sponsor, please feel free to share.

LOOKING FOR ANTON FIG
Almost EVERYONE in the USA knows Anton Fig's whereabouts: Every week night he drums with Paul Schaffer's band on the NYC-based "David Letterman Show" (late night network TV talk show). I don't follow his career esp., but I've noticed that that band often backs up "mega rock stars" at gala events -- such as Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductions.
Since Americans USUALLY make the mistake of assuming everyone on the planet knows our TV shows... David Letterman's show is one of the top two late night talk shows here in the US-- the only competition being from Jay Leno's "Tonight Show" (formerly hosted by Johnny Carson). Most South Africans I know, know about this part of US culture from Mad magazine!

THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL 2001
The second staging of this massive two-night jazz festival at the Good
Hope Centre in Cape Town was once again a stunning success. Joint
Festival organizers, esp-Afrika and Mojo Concerts, laid on a bill that
brimmed with diverse and dynamic talent from across the jazz spectrum.
The festival, which featured over 30 acts on four different stages, ran
like clockwork, ensuring that the 20,000 music fans got full value for
their money and could catch sections of almost all the concerts with a
little judicious timing and a lot of energy.
Rock fans were slipped a late inducement to attend when drummer Bill
Bruford joined the bill at the last minute. This legendary rock
performer, and the ultimate Prog Rock drummer (Yes, King Crimson,
Genesis, UK, Bruford) appeared with his jazz outfit Earthworks on his
first visit to Africa. The SA Rock Digest was honoured to introduce Mr
Bruford to the assembled press conference and was well positioned to
catch Earthworks’ Friday night performance on the outdoors ‘Manenberg’
Stage. The group consists of Steve Hamilton (piano), Marc Hodgson
(bass), Patric Clahar (tenor sax), and Bill on drums.
Their group’s new (second) album is called ‘The Sound Of Surprise’,
which is from a well-known quote describing Jazz generally. As Bill
Bruford explained to the press conference, if one doesn’t leave the
Festival feeling "surprised" by the music experienced, then they should
demand their money back. No chance of that at this Festival as
Earthworks joined Zuco 103, Da Lata, Marcus Miller, Moodphase 5ive,
Tananas, Paul Hanmer, Randy Crawford, and others in turning the first
night of the Festival into a wonderful musical celebration and rocking
(jazzing?) party.
The second night saw a slightly smaller crowd (the free food and drinks
for the many sponsors’ guests was only for one night), and they had to
brave a very nasty South Easter gale that seriously affected the acts on the outdoor stage but couldn’t affect the music happening at the other three indoor venues. Cape Town’s Madame Freak continued the party on the Baseline Stage in the basement, while Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and the Brand New Heavies impressed the huge crowd in the main ‘Kippes’ arena.
Overall, this festival was a wonderful achievement by Rashied Lombard
and his dedicated team at esp-Africa and it is now certain that this
will become a regular annual event in Cape Town and on the international Jazz Festival circuit.

become the new home of an annual music festival, the two day, Crocodile
Rock Festival, which takes place this year over the weekend of 13th and
14th of April 2001. Two hundred kilometres from Durban city, Naval
Island will host some of South Africa’s top musicians over this two-day
celebration. Artistes such as Wonderboom, Squeal, Sunways, Lush Puppies, AK Massive, Wess Lee, Dr Victor and The Rasta Rebels, Caffeine
Substitute, Steve and Tara Fataar, Fruit Fly Navigators and Mamba will
perform on this beautiful Natalian island, set against beaches, beach
volleyball games, beer tents, flea markets, camp sites and basic
