DANNY K SIGNS TO INTERNATIONAL LABEL

New SA pop sensation, Danny K, has just signed a massive six album deal
with Universal UK, one of the world’s most prestigious record companies. This young Johannesburg singer’s first single, ‘Hurt So Bad’ has been getting a lot of interest and chart action in SA and his debut album, ‘Danny K’, has just been released by Gallo Records SA. While the video for ‘Hurt So Bad’ is currently enjoying high rotation on SATV, the SA public also caught a glimpse of Danny K performing live alongside Loyiso at the recent SAMA Awards ceremony.

As a major worldwide priority for Universal UK, Danny will record new
tracks with a number of impressive producers including Stargate (Sisqo,
Mariah Carey), Bill Padley (Atomic Kitten) and Merlin (Samantha Mumba).
A remixed version of ‘Hurt So Bad’ will be released in the UK on July
30th. Danny will also be shooting a new video for the track to launch it internationally. Universal UK’s current roster is host to some of the hottest current artists including Sheryl Crow, Eminem, Dr Dre, Limp
Bizkit, No Doubt, Sting, Portishead, Marilyn Manson, Bush (no, not
George) and many others. This deal will hopefully put Danny on the
global musical map, and is potentially very exciting news for the rest
of the SA pop scene.

SUGARDRIVE SPLIT

Authentic Ideas, Sugardrive’s management and publicity team, has issued
a shock press statement stating that Paul E Flynn, lead singer and
songwriter for SA band Sugardrive has announced that with immediate
effect he will be resigning from the band to pursue other musical
ventures. The future of the band is uncertain at this stage, and it is
expected the band will fold without its dynamic vocalist. However the
foursome stated that they would honour their last two performance
commitments. These two final shows were at the 5FM Easter Rock Festival
last Saturday 14 April at the Rand Show Grounds, Nasrec and at Tramps,
154 Annabella Street, Bartlet, Boksburg on Sunday 15 April.

This news comes as a great surprise to the band’s many fans who were
expecting a new studio album from the group in the next few months. The
group’s live album ‘In The Circle’ was released recently and followed up an international appearance at the Big Day Out music festival in
Australia. The Digest had been critical of the band recently due to the
disappointing live album and seemingly unfocused approach to the
recording of the new album. But we hope it wasn’t something we said!

Sugardrive have thanked all their fans for the solid support over the
last seven years, during which time they released three studio albums - ‘Tell God I’m Here’, ‘Sand.Man.Sky.’ and ‘When I Died I was Elvis’ - as well as the live album and a handful of EP’s. ‘Sand.Man.Sky.’ remains the band’s strongest piece of work and is still one of the finest SA rock albums ever released in this country. Ironically enough, as the band announces its demise, Elvis had just entered the UK charts with an old, live version of ‘Suspicious Minds’. Weird huh?

SOUTH AFRICAN ALBUM COVERS WEBSITE LAUNCHED
http://www.sarockdigest.com/albumcovers

Digest contributor and chart statistician John Samson has launched a website paying tribute to the album covers from SA's rich musical history.

These Top 50 album covers are currently John's personal choice but he welcomes input and suggestions from SA Rock Digest subscribers (anyone else's opinion, John says, will be ignored!). Each album cover is shown in thumbnail and is clickable for a bigger image and annotated in John's tongue-in-cheek style that regular Digest readers have come to love.

For example:

A CROAK AND A GRUNT IN THE NIGHT - RABBITT
If you ever need proof that the guitar is a phallic symbol, look no further than this cover. {Trevor Rabin wearing nothing but a guitar and a smile - ed}.

MADIBA BAY - KOOS KOMBUIS
A postage stamp that can't be licked.

THE RISING TIDE - BRIGHT BLUE
'What do you reckon guys, if we chuck a few bars of N'kosi Sikelel'i into "Weeping" do you think the censors will notice?' The creative process in action.

LOVE KILLS - ROBIN AULD
Were male nipples banned in the old South Africa?

CONCERT IN THE PARK - VARIOUS ARTISTS
South Africa's answer to Live Aid is brilliantly captured in this stadium encompassing shot. You can just see me in row 453, 974th from the left.

BEATS AND PEACES - OOM
Laid back and as cool as the music that lies within, this ou with his tyretread slops, velhoed and transistor radio radiates an image of a township musician. Someone once said that all that's missing is the "B" in front of Oom.

RESURRECTION TIME FOR SA 70s ROCK
Owen Coetzer

Light the rockets. Clear the decks. Hawk, Freedoms Children, Otis Waygood Blues Band, Suck... the mind-boggling South African groups of the 1970s are coming back to life... and they’re not the only ones.

When he was a teenager, Benjy Mudie snapped on his tight jeans, slicked back his hair, and headed for the music. It was a pretty long trek - Benjy lived in Brakpan, a singular uninspiring mining town on the East Rand surrounded by yellowing dumps. When the wind blew - and it did often - so did the sand. The music, as always was in Johannesburg, a two hour stop-start journey away. Was it worth the trip?.

"Every minute," says Benjy, who joined the Johannesburg-based record company WEA shortly after his hair had begun to grow around his neck. It later became Tusk, with Benjy one of the men at its mighty helm.
"I saw them all, feasted on what they did. Dave Ornellas, with wild flying hair fronting Hawk as they went through African Day with drummer Braam Malherbe making like he was born with sticks in his hands.
How about Freedom’s Children with even wilder Ramsay McKay and Colin Pratley, stripped to the waist almost hidden by his huge Afro drums...
This was a time when musicians played real instruments, wrote real songs that reflected the social and political landscape of the time... real music made by real people."

Now Benjy is bringing it alive again, on re-mastered CDs, on a label he has called Retro Fresh. He says: "This music created revolution, changed perceptions. It needs to be preserved so that future generations can look back and understand where, and how, the roots of South African contemporary music were sown. "Kids who hear this music for the first time, shake their heads in admiration. They can’t believe South Africans made it. They want it..."

It’s not on the "heavies" that Benjy has brought back to life. There’s The Dynamics, with post-Punk ska and hard-edged new wave. There’s Cape Town’s Falling Mirror (with a re-issue of their 'Johnny Calls the Chemist'). To come are Dog Detachment’s 'Best Kept Secrets', all girl {well almost - ed} group Peach’s 'On Loan for Evolution', EllaMental’s 'Uncomplicated Dreams', éVoid’s 'Here Comes the Rot', Via Afrika and Leslie Rae Dowling.

But pride of place will indeed be the re-issue of Freedoms Children’s seminal 'Galactic Vibes' album, with Brian Davidson, Julian Laxton, Colin Pratley and Barry Irwin. It contains the long 'The Homecoming', recorded live at Johannesburg’s Out of Town Club way back in the 1970s. Pratley’s nine-odd minute drum solo stands out as one of the milestones of South African pop. During one performance, at Durban’s King’s Park open air festival around 1974, I watched Pratley break his wrist at the beginning of the solo by slamming it down on the edge of his kit. In excruciating pain, he carried on, collapsing finally at the end of the track.

'Galactic Vibes' is an album recognised as being far ahead of its time. On it, Julian Laxton’s famous home-made flange bends sounds this way and that, creating a spacy, weaving pattern of sound effects British avant garde group Pink Floyd wanted. It is also better than their famous Astra album. Laxton doesn’t confirm it, but the flange was used by Floyd on 'Ummagumma'.

Benjy has also re-mastered South Africa’s bad boys of pop - Suck ('Time to Suck'). Notorious for their nauseating on stage antics of vomiting and breaking their equipment, they lasted only a short while before being banished from the stages. Today the original vinyl album is a rare collectors’ item.

Also in Benjy’s stable are The Otis Waygood Blues Band, with their snappy tracks and neat guitarwork. This CD - with liner notes by Rian Malan, of "My Traitor’s Heart" fame - is already out. Malan tells me: "I always thought they were brilliant. For me, this was the essence of music. I sat at their feet through concert after concert."

Coming up too are Abstract Truth’s 'Silver Trees' (with Kenny Henson, Sean Bergin, George Wolfaardt and Pete Measroch). Says Benjy: "Over the years I travelled overseas regularly listening to bands on the other side of the world. It is my opinion that many of the bands I saw live as a teenager were far better than the bands I saw overseas. The [Asylum] Kids in their heyday would have blown 99 per cent of international rock bands off the stage."

Still waiting in the wings is the re-release of Cape Town group Falling Mirror’s 'Hammerhead Hotel'. Tully McCully who mastered the album [in 1996] at his Spaced Out studios in District Six says it is one of the finest, unsung albums to come out of this country. The sentiment is echoed by Benjy. "There are tracks that will make your hair stand on end..."

But then so will all of the Retro CDs.

It’s resurrection time for South African pop ... And by the way, the CDs come with exclusive, some very rare, pictures. There are also extra tracks, some unreleased and rare live performances.

Time to blast off ...

SHILOH'S CORNER

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY

Formed in the heart of flower power, San Francisco, California in mid 1967 by classically endowed David LaFlamme. David's musical history started with playing the violin at the age of five and later as a soloist for the Utah symphony. He moved to California in 1962 and performed as a jazz violinist for the John Handy concert ensemble. LaFlamme was a session musician who often jammed with members of the Big Brother and the Holding Company, and ironically found himself in the early stages of a group called Dan Hicks and his hot licks. Dan Hicks of course stemmed from one of the earliest folk psychedelic combinations, the Charlatans.

It's a Beautiful Day was formed on a summer afternoon (hence the group name), with a host of long-haired individuals including his wife Linda on keyboards and a vivacious singer called Patti Santos. LaFlamme focussed his genre of music on jazz, classical and rock. They were very much part of the bay Californian scene that were the heartland of the hippie revival. Their style of music was commonly known as west coast art rock. He played a specially adapted, amplified, five string violin. The fifth string was in low C, so that he would have the range combination of violin and viola.

They released their debut album in 1969, (self-titled), which included the breathtaking "White Bird". The album stayed on the charts for more than a year, and then went gold. Within the dimension of this wonderful album, came forth a track called "Bombay Calling" which was later ripped off by Deep Purple to the name of "Child in Time". In 1970 the group toured England, and released their "Marrying Maiden" which included the track "Don and Dewey", a tribute to fifties violinist, Don "Sugarcane" Harris.

After various live concerts the band disbanded in 1974. Two earlier band members Bud Cockrell and David Jenkins, left in 1973 to form "Pablo Cruise". David laFlamme eventually went solo in 1976 with his album "White Bird", but retired from the music scene in the late seventies. Bass guitarist John Fowler joined Frank Zappa in 1973. Most of their guest musicians on their 1971 album "Choice Quality Stuff", went on to join Santana. It's a Beautiful Day were regulars at the Fillmore concerts, headed by Bill Graham. They featured regularly with Steve Miller band, Grateful Dead, and Janis Joplin. David LaFlamme goes down in history as a virtuoso of the violin alongside Don Harris, Papa John Creach, Graham Smith, Daryl Way and Dave Arbus of East of Eden.

It's a Beautiful Day were truly beautiful people that gave life to a season that would never be forgotten.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

POLYNATION - THE ELECTRIC PETALS (PolyGram MMTCD 1906)

Whoa, where did this CD come from? I thought I had a passing knowledge of South African rock, of SA's past and present creativity, but this 1995 release blindsided me and woke me up. Intelligent lyrics, brilliant covers, wonderful originals, and subtle or not-so-subtle hooks abound here.

The CD begins with an almost epic statement of purpose that names or alludes to SA bands of yesterday: "astral days", "African Day", "Abstract Truth", "Conglomeration" and others. These guys may be performing the world language of rock, but their roots are planted deep in the rock of South Africa.

'Party Song' is virtually impossible to dislodge from the mind, except by a listen to 'Sister Love' or 'Thank You for the Book James'.

'Rainy Day Women #36' is an excellent Dylan cover, ranking alongside 'The Mighty Quinn' by Manfred Mann, or 'Mr. Tambourine Man' by The Byrds. I say cover, but The Electric Petals don't play slavish covers but rather do interpretations that retain the structure of the original song.

The Electric Petals' originals do not pale in comparison, either. I was intensely pleased to hear the words "leonine", "demure", and "Machiavellian" all in one song ('Running Out of Patience'). 'Maid In Africa' is about a tourist, about growing up in South Africa, and about the new world of South Africa. It starts specific then grows abstract and conceptual.

I'm not one of those who believes that if you have a message send a telegram. Music, art and literature make statements not in newspapers or textbooks, and The Electric Petals bring up a range of topics. While not every track is #1-with-a-bullet-stuff, the original songs are vastly rewarding. 'Polynation' represents SA rock in the way that certain other albums are signposts for other musical eras and styles.

The Electric Petals are firmly entrenched in both their society and their world. They know their rock past, they do their own style of homage to Beatles and Dylan, and the lengthy list of friends shows they have a sense of community. Relationships abound in the music and in the credits. Two of the CD's catchiest songs thank James Phillips and Jennifer Ferguson ('Thank You for the Book James' and 'Sister Love').

The Electric Petals were Ajay, Angus Rose, and Danny de Wet. Danny currently drums in Wonderboom. Among the familiar additional musicians and friends of the band listed in the credits are: Ampie Omo, Johnny Blundell, Dave Ornellas and Ron Bretell. Members of many bands sang in the "Hooligan Choir" in 'Rainy Day Women' and the closing number '(This Isn't) Walt Disney': No Friends of Harry, Magic Cactus, Sugardrive and others. This isn't a rock album made by committee, however, it is a high-quality work by a trio of guys who have many friends.

'(This Isn't) Walt Disney' closes the CD with snatches of lines from world-wide rock hits by groups such as T-Rex, David Bowie and The Stones. We begin the CD in South Africa, and end in the world.

The cover photo of an apparently albino black girl is also profound, and the album title itself is evocative of the saying, "A world in one country". One could also say that this band is of South Africa, and of the world.

I heartily recommend this CD, even to those who have never heard of The Eight Legged Groove Machine and who don't know South Africa's strong rock traditions. I'll never learn all there is about SA's music scene and musical history, but my knowledge would not be complete without this amazing album.

JOHN SAMSON
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

WORKSHOP REVISITED - McCULLY WORKSHOP
http://www.rock.co.za/mccully

Tully McCully is one of the bastions of South African rock. His name appears on nearly every classic rock album produced South of the Limpopo as either producer or musician or both. Add this to the fact that 'Workshop Revisited' also includes one of the greatest South African rock songs in the shape of 'Buccaneer', then you know that you are dealing with an important album.

One could wax lyrical about how great a song 'Buccaneer' is, (which it
certainly is), but the big question is what about the rest of the album?

Well it's a wonderful mixed bag of rock, blues, disco and ballads, all
executed in a stylish and professional manner that one has come to expect from any product bearing the name McCully. It also goes without saying that the guitar work is from the top drawer. There are some fine vocal performances, especially on the opening track 'African Drums' where the high pitched demonic screech is perfected.

'Dancin' Tonite' despite emulating the American's inability to spell
'tonight' is a solid disco number that would have had many a booty being shook in the nightclubs of the south, although I did stop short of changing into a white suit (possibly as the falsetto vocals did not appear on this song).

The blues come courtesy of the fine instrumental track 'The Train' and 'And I'm Lonely' which includes some brilliant piano work. 'Man on the Moon' is not the Ballyhoo song, but is a lighthearted, reggae-tinged song that puts the air in carefree, while mentions of Captain Hook and Fu Manchu in 'Fame and Fortune' cleverly create a link between the 2 singles 'Buccaneer' and 'Chinese Junkman' while being a worthy single contender itself.

Such was the impact of 'Buccaneer' on the South African music scene that I still feel hard done by when I remember a school concert where the Standard 4's got to mime to this classic while me and the rest of the standard 3's had to settle for miming to 'Up Up and Away in my Beautiful Balloon'. If only I had been born a year earlier. However, I can still enjoy this classic which is surrounded by songs of sufficient quality to make it only stand out a little bit.

Commentary:

The Archies continued to hold on to the top spot, despite a strong challenge by Creedence Clearwater Revival's 8th top 10 hit in less than 3 years.

In a week where there were no new entries in the top 10, lower down the charts, another ex-Beatle was launching a solo career as Paul McCartney entered at number 20 with 'Another Day'. Also in the lower reaches of the charts and tasting chart success for the first time was Tony Christie who entered at 19 with 'Las Vegas'.

The ever green green Tom Jones was also riding high with the Paul Anka penned 'She's a Lady'. This track was recently dusted off for the soundtrack of the movie 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' starring Johnny Depp and based on the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson.

Roger Dean (born 31 August 1944), prog-rock album cover artist from the 70s, is still going strong. Roger's fantasy art can be seen on the new unplugged live Uriah Heep CD, DVD and Video 'Acoustically Driven' (which features a guest appearance by Ian "Jethro Tull" Anderson), as well as on the Yes compilation 'Yes, Relatives And Friends, Volume 2' and the live 'House Of Yes: Live At the House Of Blues' and also on the brand new release from Asia, 'Aura' (featuring Asia founder member and current Yesman Steve Howe as guest guitarist).

CANADA ROCKS!
Prog-rock is alive and well in Canada judging by the clutch of new music that has found its way to Digest Towers.

MYSTERY
http://pages.infinit.net/mystery/mysteryE.html

'At the Dawn of a New Millenium' is a stunning compilation of tracks from their 3 previous albums released between 1992 and 1999. Fans of Journey and Uriah Heep will love this stuff... we know we do.

HAMADRYAD
http://www.unicornrecords.com/hamadryad/Hamadryad_E.html

Hamadryad released their debut CD 'Conservation of Mass' on the 15th of March 2001. 'Conservation of Mass' features 58 minutes of pure progressive rock, hard driven guitars, syncopated drum beats, mellotron textures, B3 organ and angelic vocals. This new progressive rock CD will take the listeners on a mystical venture.

SPACED OUT
Spacey jazz-rock

UNICORN RECORDS <http://www.unicornrecords.com> is proud to announce the release of Canadian Prog Fusion Band SPACED OUT. Aspects such as rhythm, harmony and melody have been carefully thought out and composed with the aim of bringing this style of music to life. In their repertory, polyrhythmic games combine with modal colors to form a unique music. {Um... yeah, sounds good though! - ed}

AVALON
http://www.cdstreet.com/cgi-bin/artisthome_db.cgi?325539

Avalon originally formed in the mid-70s and have recently released 'Avalon II' which contains material written in the late 70s, but only recorded in 1990 and mixed in 2000. They sound quite a bit like Styx in places (especially the keyboards) which is not a bad thing at all. The 10 minute live 'Road To St Petersburg' is a definite highlight.

SOUTH AFRICAN PROG-ROCK

Are there any prog-rock bands in South Africa? David's Confession and Titus spring to mind, but their CDs are very hard (impossible?) to find. Some of Off The Edge's stuff nods in the prog direction; listen to an MP3 of 'St Aidans' for example at http://www.rock.co.za/offtheedge.

QUIET WORLD

Bill Bruford, who played drums for Genesis during many of their live performances, recently visited South Africa to play at the North Sea Jazz Festival, however another (very obscure) musical connection exists between South Africa and megastars Genesis. Original Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett (who left the band in 1977; inspiring the title for the 1978 album: '...And then there were three') first played in a band called Quiet World who released a prog-rock album in 1970 called 'The Road'.

The SA connection? South African brothers John, Lea and Neil Heather composed all the tracks. Only John actually played on the album alongside Steve Hackett, John Hackett (Steve's brother), Phil Henderson, Gill Gilbert, Sean O'Malley, Eddy Hines and Dick Driver (that's what is says!).

So serious prog-rock and/or SA rarities collectors can look out for 'The Road' which is available on CD on the Dawn label (cat: ESMCD776) distributed by Castle Music (handled by Sony Music in SA).

5.FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK

CALLING MUSICIANS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS

I am a PhD student hoping to do my study on South African (or Southern African) Popular music. Currently, since I'm only just starting, I have no particular ideas I wish to persue and I am thus trying to map out the area of my study.

Since my study is Ethnomusicological I need to work directly with musicians and producers: observing them (fly on the wall), interviewing them, working with them, watching them perform, interviewing their audience, etc. I can not pay you for these interviews/ observations - since I am a fee paying student. I also need to be able to continue my work with you once or twice a year for the next 3 to 4 years for shorter or longer periods of time.

I am looking for the widest angle to approach this and thus would like to hear from musicians of all backgrounds: Kwaito, Rock, Metal, Drum n' Bass, Mbqanga, Rap, Hip-hop, Traditional, Jazz, etc; in short, absolutely any type of Groove thats on the Move I would like to see and hear.

To do this I will be at home (Cape Town) - earliest - the middle of June (latest end of June) until the end of August. I will be happy traveling to other parts of the country particularly Durban and Jo'burg.

Thus: if you wish to have your style/genre included please contact me via my e-mail address:

80s SA ROCK ON CD

Hello there from New York in the USA. I have been trying to track down some SA music from the 80s on CD. Do you have used CD stores there? Any online? I am mostly into 80s new wave synthpop music. I am looking for CDs by these bands, maybe you can help?

Dog Detachment - Best Kept Secret
Ellamental - Uncomplicated Dreams
Falling Mirror - Shattered
Gents - Anything
Helicopters - Anything
Peach - On Loan for Evolution
Petit Cheval - Young Lions - Best Of
Spectres - Be Bop Pop
Sweatband - No Sweat
Various - Sharp Cuts Volume 1 & 2

Sal Amato
mailto:daleki@optonline.net

{Information on all these bands can be found on the SA Rock Legends website <http://www.rock.co.za/legends>, however finding CDs is another story! 'Best Kept Secrets' is a work-in-progress retrospective of Dog Detachment by RetroFresh and should be released later in the year.

'Shattered' is out-of-print but can be found in some CD stores in SA for as little as R20. A new Falling Mirror retrospective is planned for later this year (again by RetroFresh and tentatively titled 'Caught In A Box'). As for the rest, your guess is as good as mine - ed}

JACOB HAY

I see there's a modicum of interest in JACOB HAY on your site. The lead guitarist/ lead vocalist (with the mustard coloured Strat) was Paul Craig. The second guitarist/ lead vocalist was Iain Hearfield. The bassist was Trevor Rule and the best drummer they had was Don Stanton.
'Jacob' played all over Johannesburg, east and west Rand, Pretoria, etc through the early 70's. They were signed to the same management as HAWK and were forever in their shadow. They were used as the warm up/ support for many tour dates, which included a particularly memorable set at the very first Ellis Park concert headlined by Jericho and Hawk.
Like most local bands at that time they were'nt short of talent but could'nt develop song writing. And being constantly in the shadow of HAWK hindered any progress. So it started falling apart, which was a shame, as they were playing blinding versions of songs by The Who, Wishbone Ash, Jethro Tull, Rare Bird, Pink Floyd, etc.

As for where everyone went... I don't know. I formed a trio called SCARLET O'HARA with Howard Evans on drums and John Richards on bass. Again we played all over Johannesburg, Pretoria, etc eventually securing lengthy residencies at an assortment of night clubs where we perfected our original and cover sets. Most memorable were the months at 'Take it Easy' (formerly the UNDERGOUND) opposite Joubert Park) and at 'Club 75' (I think) and 'Just for Kicks'.

SCARLET'S 'moments' were probably at The Rand Daily Mail concert at Wits in 77/78, the Film Trust Arena concert where, out of seven or 8 SA 'name' bands we were the unknown quantity who played an entirely original set which ruffled the feathers a little of the 'elite' muso world. There was another at the Colisseum with an early CLOUT which was useful albeit for newspaper coverage only.

We made two particularly abysmal singles but at the end had a host of record companies pursuing our wares. There didn't appear to be much point so Howard and I returned to London and into the jaws of eternal obscurity. We continued with SCARLET through till the mid 80's. I returned to SA and formed a really great outfit called HUMANIAX. That was 86. The local audiences weren't really ready for that kind of rock. The record companies didn't want to dabble in an unknown quantity so economy split the band up. I went off to Cape Town and got into the guitar/ singer slot in SNATCH, an hotel outfit that played the Holiday Inn circuit and individual private hotels. That kept me occupied until 1989.

The rest is too dull and boring to go into but I've just completed a solo CD which will be ready in a few months. And I'm trying to make the best out of 10 years of rehearsal and gig recordings for a "Best of Scarlet" CD which I'll probably give out to ex-members as Christmas presents. I've also been working on 2 cassette recordings I did of HUMANIAX. The recordings were done at the Rosebank Hotel (no longer on site) and at Dawsons Hotel in central Johannesburg in 1986. The quality of the recording is suspect at its best but it's the vibe and the spirit that counts.

Iain Hearfield
