SPLISH SPLASH

Does your life feel like it needs an "Easy Rider goes to Woodstock" kind of moment? Does your head need a clean break from CNN, SATV, SA RADIO and SA-GENERALLY!! Mine does, or so I realized when I read Sharlene Versveld's extremely evocative ode to the glory of a Splashy Fen Music Festival. I know there's been a "feast of festivals" these past few weeks, and more ahead, but read this and you'll know why I'm patching up my paisley tent and heading East!.

The 12th Splashy Fen Music Festival takes place next weekend in Underberg, southern Drakensberg on the farm of the same name from April 26 - 29. This is definitely the gentler music festival at which a wide range of folk converge. On any given day one would see a mum and dad with toddler on shoulder bopping to the sounds of acoustic guitars soaring up Bamboo Mountain. Further down the lane, an 18-year-old in the latest urban gear lounges in a hammock swigging on a cider, an aging hippie gran in tie-dyed frock and floppy sun hat engages in a conversation with the likes of Brendan Jury against the backdrop of rock sounds.

At the bottom campsite, teenagers opt to sloth around a fire and try cook a meal with the scarce supplies of tinned beans swiped at the last minute from mum's kitchen cupboard; and down at the river which flows through the festival site, festivities catch the warm autumn sun's rays and brave the cool waters before the sun goes down soaking up the sounds from the amphitheatre stage and its folk music.

Later around camp fires - to the sounds of a variety of instruments - sometimes drums, sometimes guitars or didges - campers get ready for the night - cook supper, layer their clothing and head off to the main marquee for a night of the latest SA rock. Families tuck warmly into sleeping bags around 8pm, the more energetic bop the night away.

Splashy means so much to so many people. For musicians it's a captive audience of between 5000 - 10 000 people; for families it's an opportunity to bond with a common interest, for teenagers it's time out from parents, for music lovers it's a feast for the ears and for campers it's heaven. Whatever it means, there is a common thing which ties all together - that is, a sense of time out - BIG TIME.

There's a sense of getting away from the madness of the city. A chance to take a deep, long breath and soak up a thousand stimuli. From the most delicious home-cooked food at the food stalls, the smells of autumn in the berg and the camp fires, the intellectual discourse, the friendships that develop, to hearing new music (and old), meeting old friends, chilling out, going for long walks, lazing in the winter sun or vibing it up until the wee hours of the morning with OB's in hand, a drum and a huge fire.

This year there are some new innovations including an Arts and Craft Centre for children which will be run by the Durban North Oceanview Montessori School, some drum workshops, a Blues stage and Trancedance sessions after 11pm in the Marquee on the Friday and Saturday nights. The reintroduced popular "free stage" run by FACMA {terrific acronym - ed} where anyone can jam, should be a spot to set your rug and watch with interest - many a popular South African muso was "discovered" on previous freestages.

And of course there's the music with many of South Africa's top musicians and bands - some new, some seasoned favourites: from Springbok Nude Girls, Wonderboom, BOO!, Butternut, Caffeine Substitute and Saron Gas to Larry Amos, Richard Haslop and Will Wallace. From Ian Henderson and George Knight to Vusi Mahlasela, Matthew van der Want, Simba Morri and Roger Lucey amongst others.

'N BOER MAAK 'N JOL

It's not that long ago that The Walkabout in Shepherd's Bush was crammed to bursting point with ex-pats enjoying what was probably the biggest 'jol' this side of the equator as they were treated to an evening of 'alternatiewe' Afrikaans folk rock in the form of Koos Kombuis.

At the time I remember thinking to myself that this was a very important moment for Afrikaans music as the enthusiasm this generated opened the doors for others to follow. It hasn't taken long for Gatskop Promotions, the people instrumental in bringing Koos to the migrant masses, to follow this up. The Valiant Swart Band is currently preparing to boldly go where the Kombuis has been before and are scheduled to appear at The Walkabout on 7 May 2001.

Possibly not as popular as Koos Kombuis, Valiant still offers the same blend of folk rock, with intelligent lyrics, capturing aspects of South African life in three minute bottles, and labelling them with his soul baring acoustic guitar licks.

Valiant has been playing 'kitaar' since 1977 and despite a shaky start
(playing songs by George Baker and Joe Dolan) he quickly learned how to rock and was soon blasting out songs like Apache by the Shadows on his newly acquired electric guitar. When he discovered Bob Dylan and the blues, he knew he had found his spiritual home.

Starting with the seminal 'Mystic Boer', Valiant has produced 6 critically acclaimed albums. The follow up to 'Mystic Boer' was 'Dorpstraat Revisited' which, along with Piet Botha's 'Death of a Gypsey' were the first releases on Eckard Potgieter's fledgling record label Wildebeest. Acts like Anton Goosen and Koos Kombuis soon joined the Wildebeest stable which is now one of South Africa's leading independent record labels.

Valiant is no newcomer to the stage, having gigged around South Africa
appearing at Houtstok, Splashy Fen and Oppikoppi. He has also shared the stage with the man who flung the doors of The Walkabout open for Afrikaans acts.

The British have Mystic Meg who gazes into her crystal ball and predicts who will win the lottery, South African's have Die Mystic Boer who predicts nothing and carries a guitar instead of a crystal ball, but you have a better chance of being a winner with Valiant than you do with Meg.

Valiant Swart will be performing at the Walkabout in Shepherd's Bush on Bank Holiday Monday 7 May 2001 and will be the perfect antidote to the end of the long weekend blues. Tickets can be obtained from South2north Travellers Info Centre, New Zealand House (phone 020 7747 9238) or by calling 020 7536 5518 before 4pm and 07884 365773 after 4pm. SEMISANE INTO GERMANY, THE SOUTH COAST AND WESTLIFE

Following their recent dynamic performances at the Southern Cross and 5FM Easter Rock Festivals, Semisane's management has announced that the Cape quartet has secured a single and album release in Germany via parent company BMG in Munich. Monday 24th April sees 'Alright' becoming the first official Semisane single release into this huge European market. This initial release will be followed by the launch of Semisane's full album, 'A Life Less Strange', in the middle of May. Plans are also underway to get the band across to Germany for a promotional tour later this year.

To add to their share of good news, Semisane has just been selected as the official support act for superstar boy band Westlife's performance in Cape Town on May 18. The band also played support for Australian pop giants, Savage Garden, a few months ago. Prior to that they will be embarking on a short South Coast Tour (dates below). Semisane's debut album, 'A Life Less Strange', was recorded and produced in Johannesburg by Brian O'Shea and Christopher Tuck, and released in late 2000. The album has already spawned several radio favourites and 5FM Top 40 hits ('Alright' reached No 1), and it is hoped the album and band repeat this success in Germany and beyond. 'Now I Know', the fifth single off the album, is currently nestling at the top of many SA charts.

Those upcoming live dates are:
Sat 28 April: Flashbacks - Plettenberg Bay
Mon 30 April: Buccaneers - East London
Wed 2 May: Fourplay - Grahamstown
Thurs 3 May: Tin Roof Blues - Knysna
Sat 5 May: Tin Roof Blues - Knysna
Fri 18 May: Westlife bill - Bellville Velodrome, Cape Town

TANANAS' LIVE ALBUM - COVER AND NAME CHANGE

In a surprising (and probably very costly move), Tananas and Sony decided to rename and re-cover their new live album which has already been out for a few weeks. The name of the album, which was recorded live at The Bassline in Melville during 2000, has been changed from 'Live' to 'Alive In Jo'Burg'. The original cover art had black and white pen pictures of Ian Herman, Gito Baloi and Steve Newman above the title on a yellow and white background. The new cover features a bold painting of the Johannesburg skyline at night.

The tracks on 'Alive In Jo'Burg' are: 'Standanyobo', 'Ngoma', 'Khiribeke', 'Sambanessa', 'Thru Lines', 'Spiral', 'Inhlalini', 'Tocamos Todos Dias', 'Hard Hat Jive', 'Lua', 'Tananas', 'Caminhos', 'Cabo', 'Oyoyo'. Rumours that copies of the 'Live' CD, with the original artwork, have acquired rare, cult and mythical status already, and are changing hands at ridiculous prices, started right here!

IMAGINATION TO APPEAR IN SA

Imagination, the very successful British soul/pop group from a decade or two back ('Just An Illusion', 'Music And Lights') is returning to SA for a one-off performance at the Taal Monument in Paarl on Monday April 30th. The trio was last in SA in 1995 when it played a sold out concert at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town. Imagination still boast the original three piece line-up and Leee John (lead vocals and keyboards) is still fronting the band alongside Ashley Ingram (bass and vocals) and Errol Kennedy (drums). Although we haven't heard anything from the group since the tour here in 1995, they are still huge in Europe - during the past 21 months, they performed close to 400 concerts. A new dance-type album is due for release by Christmas time this year.

Tickets available at Computicket.

3. CD REVIEWS
--------------

THE MANY FACES OF - GLORIA BOSMAN

Second album from this top SA jazz vocalist featuring ten more reasons why Gloria is so highly regarded in SA jazz circles and a truly bizarre cover. The album may be called 'The Many Faces Of', but this cover, looking like a Picasso and Jack The Ripper collaboration, takes that title a bit too literally. I won't describe it to you, why spoil a really special surprise? Just head into your local CD store and take a look for yourselves. And while you're squizzing at it with awe, why not ask the counter assistant to play you some of the songs. You'll hear a warm, swooping voice weaving its emotional way through some fresh and original jazz arrangements. A worthy follow-up to her acclaimed debut, 'Tranquility'.

'Welela' opens in restrained and reconciliatory mood, sounding like a 'Felicia on e' favourite, before 'Sliding Through' settles the album into a steady groove with that sweet and versatile voice beginning to unwind. 'For The Children' is a highpoint in the middle of the album with its young voices chorus, and 'Love Perfection', 'Fool' and 'Foolish Game' are other stand-out tracks. Gloria wrote or co-wrote almost every note and word on this album, and produced it as well. But she made sure that she had enough talent around her to pull it off, including co-writers Paul Hanmer, Lucas Senyatso, Steve Zulu, and an impressive list of musicians. (SS)

----------

THIN SHOES IN JUNE - FELIX LABAND

First sighting of this enigmatic new musical talent was at the beginning of the 'IT' compilation where a 30-second snippet of Laband's moody instrumental, 'Single Light' (titled 'Intro'), opened the album. The full 'Single Light' got a run later on that new-Capetown-wave compilation, and, as with many of those other acts, aroused a lot of interest. 'Thin Shoes In June' is the banquet to 'Single Light's' intriguing appetizer, and yet another triumph for the African Dope label. But this is nothing like the trippy beats fruit salad of Krushed & Sorted's 'Acid Made Me Do It', nor the shimmering hip-pop of the Mood "Phamous" 5ive's dazzling 'Steady On'. This is probably what Moby's 'Play' album would sound like without all those very old archived blues vocal samples. In fact the only words spoken here are a brief looped soundbyte featuring either PW or Pik Botha at the beginning of 'Hopeful'.

Otherwise these are just 15 light, sweet and addictive musical electronic-instrumental pieces that will calm, collect and chill you. Each with its own little tune and imaginative arrangement, designed to ensure that at no stage does this album become remotely tedious or repetitive. It has the dark sparkle of Air's 'Moon Safari', random trippy flashes of Pink Floyd's earlier sounds, and if David Lynch had based 'Twin Peaks' in Cape Town's City Bowl, then this would work as the soundtrack. 'Cat On The Fence' sounds like a symphony for nursery school percussion and xylophone; 'Bats In My Hair' sounds like the shimmering of power lines; 'Thin Use For Shoes' takes the chorus of 'I Love Paris In The Springtime' and turns it into an hypnotic tap-drip. There's enough invention, variety, confidence and great tunes on this bright and shiny debut album to satisfy the most jaded musical cynic. Laband plays on! (SS)

SHILOH'S CORNER

TIM ROSE

Tim Rose was born in Washington in 1940 and raised in Virginia. At that stage this very young rebellious teenager who had recently been expelled from a seminary, decided to settle in New York's Greenwich village. In the early days he hung out with a folk rock group called the Thorns which included singer/songwriter Jake Holmes. His major source of income was serving as a navigator for the US Airforce. This military excursion led him to be relocated to Washington and it was here that he met Mama Cass Elliott (Mamas and the Papas), and her future husband James Hendricks (not Jimi). The group was known as the Big Three. Tim left the group in 1964 and decided to venture into a solo career. It was during this interim period that Tim joined the Journeymen as a lead guitarist which included John Phillips and Scott McKenzie.

The history on Tim Rose has always been vague, in fact even his songwriting credits always maintain an essence of truth with a lot more to contemplate. At one stage he claimed to have joined the New Christy Minstrels with Barry McGuire, yet most of his work was solo and featured at a regular club, the Night Owl as a support for the Loving Spoonful. Now comes the controversy. Tim Rose lays claim to songwriting an arrangement of "Hey Joe", "Morning Dew" and "Come away Melinda". History tells us that Bonnie Dobson wrote "Morning Dew". Yet Tim claims that he co-wrote and increased her income at the same time with his particular version. Yet Bonnie claims if anybody deserves credit, it should be folk singer Fred Neil. This particular track has been featured by artists such as Ian Gillan of Episode Six and the Jeff Beck group with Rod Stewart as vocalist.

"Come away Melinda", an anti war song, co-written by Fred Hellerman of the Weavers which first appeared on a 1964 release by Judy Collins, is another one of Tim's personal 'adaptations'. He certainly inspired the Uriah Heep version on "Very 'eavy, very humble". Yet again the question mark hangs ominously above the Rose mystique. Tim came to the UK and managed to gain the support of a rhythm section called the Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation which featured regularly at the Speakeasy alongside Pink Floyd. His live concerts often featured Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. It seems as though Tim places himself mystically in controversial positions or question marks in the history of the sixties. He also lays claim to the fact that he was considered as a replacement for Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones. The "Hey Joe" controversy is probably contextualised by the fact that Tim Rose had slowed down the original version which had initial inspiration for Hendrix. Although other confirmations tell us that Hendrix first heard the track through Brian MacLean, guitarist for Love, who had worked for a roadie for the Byrds. Love's vocalists Arthur Lee had a close friendship with Jimi Hendrix.

To be objective about Tim Rose would probably be the safest recourse due to the fact the he remains individual and a survivor of the tragic sixties. He recently performed at the Royal Albert hall as a support act for Nick Cave backed by noted musicians such as Andy Summers (Police) and B.J. Cole. Yet with all his survival and self-made glory one can't help feeling an awkward tension when he performs "If I were a carpenter" without at least paying tribute audibly to the great Tim Hardin notwithstanding the fact that he had toured extensively with him in the seventies.

He may be closer to the truth when one considers that the sixties were hazy and difficult to remember, a product of the true hippie.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

CIVILIZED - SQUEAL

Squeal's 'Civilized?' has an ironic cover photo: Birch, Barnes, and Baker wearing suits. These ous are civilized? Don't be so sure. Rock can be a harsh mistress who eats her young. She makes musicians sign contracts with the devil before they board faulty airplanes. So rock and gentility do not often skip along hand-in-hand. Squeal civilized? You can dress them up, but can they go out on the town in Durban without making a Big Noise?

The teenager trapped in my somewhat older hide gravitates to the speedier, harder tunes on 'Civilized?'. Yet, Squeal, and band-leader David Birch, can sing and play a slow rock number and make it work -- and this songwriting and performing talent, playing effective slow rock songs, is where Squeal parts from the gimokes of a couple other big SA bands. Bassist Brett Barnes is back. He played on the first Squeal CD, 'Long Pig', took a break on the second, 'Man and Woman', and is back with the deep bottom here. Bruce Baker does the drumming and pounds out the signature Squeal style perfectly.

The 'Introduction' track has a nice and amusing message, but being an exchange between NASA Ground Control and an astronaut in orbit, not a song, it is something I usually skip. It is interesting hearing Russian and American accents done by South Africans, however. The voice of NASA will always have a Texas accent, I guess. Though it seems that whenever British actors do American accents they become Texans, as when American actors do British accents they always end up being either Cockney or Constipated.

The title track of 'Civilized?' jumps us into the gig with a suitably raw intro and drives into a ruthless song pierced by nice-sounding harsh guitar. Who wants Squeal to be genteel?

Like Squeal's previous releases, 'Civilized?' has memorable thumping tunes interspersed among evocative slow-tempo to mid-tempo songs that rock, even in the seemingly quieter moments, as does 'Shake Down' and its singable refrain. Squeal albums are marvels of pacing in that the mountains accent the valleys and the valleys prove that mountains don't exist without the valleys. This pacing talent is explained by Squeal being in touch with their audience. A slower tune gets people close, then makes the big bang of the next raucous tune more obvious. Yet it all has to flow, as does this CD.

'Civilized?' is streamlined rock, but not in the sense of simple and repetitious. There's ample guitar playing, strong up-front bass, and pounding drums on this disc. This is streamlined rock in the sense that each song has a destination, without forgetting that the trip itself should be as fun and purposeful as the destination. 'Juvenile' is a serious pounder of this sort, while 'Higher' strides in a cocky strut.

This is a wild rock album, but is Squeal civilized? Well, they are housebroken, but don't let the suits fool you. They're still wild men playing drums and guitars, making music for dancing around big fires.

My CD jewel case also has a cool SA flag and One World sticker on it with the sensible, sane, and civilized advice: Buy South African Music.

Check out www.friedjam.co.za for downloads of their new EP, 'Begin'. If you prefer shiny silver discs, 'Begin' is promised out on CD sometime soon.

JOHN SAMSON
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

CHIMERA - DUNCAN MacKAY

Prog Rock, now there's a thing. Of all the genres on offer in modern music, I have found it one of the most difficult to get into, and must admit that I'm still not totally convinced. Is it due to the length of most tracks, or the distinct lack of vocals on the tracks? Who knows? However, the main thrust of Prog was technical perfection. Musicians were musicians back then and these guys were masters of their instruments.

Duncan MacKay was no exception. Listening to 'Chimera', one cannot but marvel at the skill with which he brings his keyboards to life. Only three tracks on the album, but they swirl and twist in a barrage of piano, organ and general synth sounds, leaving the listener exhausted at the end, but strangely satisfied. As one listens, one can almost picture the man totally absorbed in playing, the concentration etched on his sweat drenched features.

There are a number of changes of pace that give the listener a chance to catch their breath and relax a while to some jazzy pieces and classical interludes before the tempo picks up again and you're once more on the slippery sliding psychedelic trip that is Chimera. Even if you're not a Prog rock fan, there is no denying that good Prog rock
is performed by extremely talented individuals whose love affair with their instruments is tangible in the music. And I don't think I'm too far wrong in saying that MacKay was one of the greatest Progs in South African history (except maybe for Frederick van Zyl Slabbert).

With his startling agility on a keyboard he could easily have become a
classical pianist specialising in Chopin, but he chose to rock and the world is a better place for that choice. I may never get to love Prog rock, but I can spot a good thing when I hear it, and this is certainly a top class album of it's genre and should have taken it's place alongside Yes's 'Close to the Edge', Van der Graaf Generator's 'Pawn Hearts' and ELP's 'Brain Salad Surgery'. (The Monty Pythonesque album cover also deserves a mention).

"This is a musical experiment. A horde of fanciful conceptions, their
ultimate goal, the impossible dream - the Chimera! Combined melody and
technicality help Morpheus exhume a modern myth and explore it. Song for Witches conscious of the dream - delves into legend. And finally Twelve Tone nostalgia reflects." - Duncan MacKay from sleeve notes to 'Chimera'

SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS: 30 YEARS AGO
http://www.rock.co.za/charts

Friday, 23 April 1971

This week [last week] Title - Artist

1 [1] A Summer Prayer For Peace - The Archies
2 [3] Home - Dave Mills *
3 [2] Have You Ever Seen The Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival
4 [5] Knock Three Times - Dawn
5 [11] What Is Life - George Harrison
6 [4] Silver Moon - Michael Nesmith
7 [7] She's A Lady - Tom Jones
8 [6] My Sweet Lord - George Harrison
9 [14] Understanding - Peanut Butter Conspiracy *
10 [9] Pushbike Song - The Mixtures

* South African Artists

Despite a strong challenge from SA's Dave Mills, the Archies maintained their stronghold on the top spot for the forth week. George Harrison was flying the Beatles flag with 2 hits in the top 10 while Paul McCartney wasn't lurking to far behind with 'Another Day' climbing up to number 15.

Peanut Butter Conspiracy finally cracked into the top 10 after a bit of a roller coaster ride in the lower reaches of the top 20 with their debut single 'Understanding'. Another South African was meanwhile making a debut in the top 20 - Alan Garrity's 'Put your Hand in the Hand' entered at number 19.

Rock fans would have been upset at the end of Led Zeppelin's SA chart career as 'Immigrant' song dropped out of the top 20. They had spent 8 weeks on the chart with this song and in 1970 had spent 7 weeks with 'Whole Lotta Love', a total of 15 weeks in the charts. Still this was better than they ever fared in the British Singles chart where they never had a hit at all.

South Africans at Number 1 this Week:

Love is a Beautiful Song - Dave Mills (1970)
I Won't Give Up - Bruce Miller (1976)

SA POP AT NO 1
http://www.rock.co.za/charts

John Samson, our SA/Springbok Pop Charts archivist, gives a quick run-down on all those South African stars that hit the top spot on these charts between 1969 and 1989:

No SA artist had more than one Number 1 during that period. Only 25 South Africans hit the top spot, of those, one was in the 60's, 21 in the 70's and only three in the 80's. Ten were by groups, seven by male artists and eight by females. South Africans spent a total of 106 weeks at the top (out of a possible 1049 weeks, just over 10%).

The most weeks spent at number 1 by a South African hit was 12 by Charisma's 'Mammy Blue', followed by nine ('Paradise Road' - Joy). Bruce Millar's six-week run with 'I Won't Give Up' ranks fifth-best alongside Barbara Ray's 'I Don't Want To Play House'. Glenys Lynn's 'Ramaja' was the only totally Afrikaans song to reach number 1, although David Kramer's 'Hak Hom Blokkies' featured an Afrikaans chorus, the rest of the song was in English. The last South African no.1 was 'Woodpeckers from Space' by Café Society. It had an eight-week run at the top, the last week being 11 October 1985.

CHABA SENA

I would like to know who sings a song called "Chaba sena". I think the band is called "Kennedy and friends", but I'm not sure. I also would like to know what does "Chaba sena" mean. What would you recommend me about this band? CDs? MP3s? I'm asking this because I think that song is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Do you know where can I find the lyrics or the translations for this song?

Well, thank you in advance for all your help.

SUBSTITUTE?

I am now living in Switzerland (ex-Cape Town). I was snowboarding in the mountains 2 weeks ago and while I was having lunch at the top of the mountain, I heard a recycled dance mix of the song 'Substitute' by Clout. Do you know anything about this remixed track and have they been playing it in SA too?

Cheers

NEW BAND FROM BOTSWANA

My name is Sentah from Gaborone in Botswana, and I am a band member and
manager of one unique African rock band by the name of Metal Orizon

will again be featured.

Metal Orizon released its first album in 1999 called ‘Ancestral
Blessings’ which is fully available as a free mp3 on our web site. Soon we are releasing our second album, which is rich in African
culture/tribal feels. We are currently looking for an overseas label,
contract/compilations/touring etc... so, anyone out there, please help...

Metal Orizon’s website is at

SA MUSIC VENUES INFO WANTED

I'm writing a section on music for the upcoming updated Lonely Planet South Africa guide book, and was wondering if you have a list or recommendations of places for people to see South African music - most of the article will be on township music such as mbaqanga, jazz, maskanda, kwaito, etc.. so, especially relevant to these would be best.

Thanks in advance for your help!

THE NAKED TRUTH

Not sure how many Digest subscribers also read Loslyf magazine, so here's what Loslyf wrote about Piet Botha in the May 2001 issue.

http://www.pietbotha.com

BATMANIA
http://www.rock.co.za/files/bats_index.html

I am a resident of East London and recently had the privilege of seeing the Bats in concert, as they are touring South Africa on a reformation tour. The band is still the same with Eddie Eckstein, Paul Ditchfield, Pete Clifford and a new band member in the name of Derek Gordon, who I met while living in Cape Town. My wife and I were groupies of his band called Headstart. The Bats are going over to Australia in August/September this year to the rugby Tri-nations and they will visit Perth where the Springboks are to play Australia. Spoke to them after their show - what great old toppies. Thought I might just share the above with you.
