NEW NUDE GIRLS?
The SA rock world was shaken last week with the news that Springbok Nude Girls’ bassist Arno Blumer and drummer Francois Kruger had left the band they helped form back in the mid-'90s. Rumours about potential upheavals in the Stellenbosch five-piece had been rife since Sugardrive announced their dissolution, prompting talk of Paul E Flynn working with some Nude Girls on a "new" project. Record company Sony have been cautious in their comments and, at this stage, it seems the remaining members of the band are intending to replace the rhythm section and move forward as a going musical concern.
Names associated with those open slots in the band include ex-Lithium drummer Simon Portlock, drummer and bassist Sven McAlpine, and the female bass player from Supernature. But the general feeling is that even if the Nude Girls do continue, losing such a vital element of the band is a serious setback. The Springbok Nude Girls’ Story - Part 1, is now over.

ZEN ARCADE CD LAUNCH PRE-EMPTS SINGLE RELEASE
In an unusual reversal of industry norms, Zen Arcade is releasing its self-produced debut album, 'Snowflake', three weeks before the release of their single 'Crazy Over You', already earmarked as a "plug" track for Sony and 5FM's 'Unearthed 3' Compilation. Zen Arcade will showcase songs from 'Snowflake' at The Mixer (cnr. 4th Ave/7th St., Melville) on Friday 1 June. Seating is limited - be there 8:30 for 9pm. R10 at the door includes a free shooter.

THEUNS JORDAAN TOUR DATES
He’s the "Karookind Van Venterstad", his debut album ‘Vreemde Stad’ has just been released on EMI, and he was the sensation of last year’s Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees. He is Theuns Jordaan, and the songs on ‘Vreemde Stad’ are mostly covers of songs by the cream of our alt.Afrikaans artists like Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, David Kramer, Koos du Plessis, Piet Botha and Gert Vlok Nel. But in amongst those are five of Theuns’ own compostions like ‘Makiesakie’, ‘Visserman’ and the title track. Hear what all the fuss is about when Theuns sets off on his Western Cape tour, appearing at the following venues:

CAMPS BAY PRIMARY SCHOOL LAUNCHES "NOTES FOR NOTES"
MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Camps Bay Primary School will be holding the first in a series of musical events at its school on Wednesday 30 May, with performances by Gretel Coetzee, soprano, and the Wildflower Jazz Band. The Camps Bay Primary School "Notes for Notes" Music Scholarship Fund will host a series of fund-raising concerts this year, with monies raised in the Fund being available for disbursement as scholarships (awarded to learners who display exceptional musicality, perform well, and work consistently) and as subsidies (awarded to learners who are musically talented but cannot afford the tuition fees).
The performance on 30 May will feature Gretel Coetzee singing well-loved favourites from operas and musicals, including Muzetta’s Song from La Boheme, Csardas from Die Fledermaus, and Summertime from Porgy and Bess. After that, the Wildflower Jazz Band play jazz standards by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, and Wayne Shorter. The Wildflower Jazz Band features Heather Burgess on flute and saxophone, Alex van Heerden on trumpet and vocals, Frank Mallows on vibraphone and Brydon Bolton on double bass.
Tickets cost R25 each, and may be bought from Chris von Ulmenstein (tel 438-3840), or at Camps Bay Primary School, for R25 per adult and R10 per learner. Wine and soft drinks will be on sale. The performance starts at 7.30 pm.

FIRST TWO OPPIKOPPI STAGES AND ACTS CONFIRMED - TICKETS AVAILABLE SOON
Fountains Valley, the new venue chosen for the progressive and uniquely South African festival Oppikoppi, could well be the scene for one of the biggest (and almost definitely one of the most ambitious), events in original South African music history. Although the Oppikoppi festival will sport no milkshake props of any height worth mentioning, initial planning indicates the use of 6 or 7 stages during this four-day to-do. It is expected that well in excess of 100 cutting edge acts will be appearing at the Oppikoppi TUNED festival.
The first to be confirmed are Moses Khumalo, Themba Mkize and Koos Kombuis. As usual this ace-list will be considerably longer in the next month or so. In addition the festival will host a wider array of acts than ever before with artists being booked from genres such as: rock, hip-hop, hardcore, punk, ska, folk, blues, drum ‘n bass, big beats, funk, kwaito, jazz, traditional, world music and other genres. After the extraordinarily successful introduction of the comedy stage at the TREK 2000 event, this arena will also return again with a bigger selection of comedians and open-minded theatre for the tune-ruffians.
The first two stages to be confirmed are:
The Tassenberg and Old Brown Sherry Hardcore stage - A mixture of hip-hop, rock, blues and metal to make your teeth grind.
The Bernini folk and progressive Jazz stage - A platform for more laid back folk acts that will gradually give way to tunes with an increasingly jazzy inclination.

SPOTLIGHT ON EMINENT CHILD
No, not Eminem’s Child! Not remotely! This is yet more clean-cut, SA C-rock (Tree63, MIC) that is grabbing far more attention overseas than it is in SA. And it’s not too hard too see/hear why. The band has done its recent Britpop homework (Travis, Coldplay), kept an eye on Creed’s "are they/aren’t they" strong US rock crossover success and fashioned and released ‘Into The Universe’, an album that’s very hard to fault on any level of current MOR rock. ‘Into The Universe’ bulges with some very impressive pop/rock goodies, more (current) Manic Street and less (well, not too much) Preaching. Okay, so the first line is: "My Jesus is so kind, He’ll come and split your mind" (‘Miracle’), but from there on there are no more major name checks or drops and it’s a pretty good album all round with ‘Sing My Song’ leading other strong single contenders like ‘Fascination’, ‘Way Of Love’ and ‘Friend’ into the charts.
It took Eminent Child five years to get to this point. The four piece, comprising Gino Fabbri (drums), Michael McAuley (bass), Darren Peens (guitar, vocals), and Brad Peens (vocals, guitar), started with some talent contests in PE, recorded a demo that picked up a lot of fan interest and radio play, and grabbed a one-album deal that produced their debut ‘Still Learning’. Six songs off this album got countrywide airplay and they played at the Martell Rock Fest in Grahamstown, opened for Mango Groove's final tour down the coast culminating at the 3 Arts final concert, and supported Hothouse Flowers at the 2000 Splashy Fen.
A single ‘2000’ followed (it appears as a bonus track on ‘Into The Universe’). Eminent Child then signed a three-album deal with Sarepta Music, the successful Natal-based Christian Rock label. The band had previously travelled to England on the proverbial "wing and a prayer" and took a slot on a festival where they played to an audience of 20 people. But fortunately, as the band described it, it was the right 20 people and the overseas invitations started arriving. They returned to the UK the following year and played the Cross-Rhythms Festival on a farm in Oakhampton (this time to a capacity crowd), as well as a number of smaller venues.
Following the signing of the Sarepta deal, the band were given the chance to play in Einthoven at the Flevo Totaal Festival as a main stage opening act in front of about 5000 people. The band was a huge success and the next day were offered a deal with GMI music in Holland for European Distribution as well as a UK Distribution Deal with Kingsway Music (who had also signed Tree before). During 2001 Eminent Child have already toured The Netherlands, picked up two SAMA Award nominations (Best Group and Best Christian Contemporary Album), and are booked to tour Holland, Switzerland and England with some unconfirmed gigs planned in Sweden, Germany, Italy, and New Zealand. The band also played the mainstage at Splashy Fen a few weeks ago.
So Eminent Child have arrived, and ‘Into The Universe’ is a well-produced affair (by Neal Snyman) with top tunes, loads of ideas and a warm heart. (SS)

SANSCAPES - VISIONS OF THE BUSHMEN
This new release on the Electric MELT label draws its inspiration from
the San’s ancient culture, bringing their creativity and musical
imaginations into the realm of contemporary western dance culture. Using the raw and undiluted recordings from ‘Pops Mohamed Presents The Bushmen Of The Kalahari’, some of the world’s best and most diverse producers and remix artists have taken these sounds and woven them into a contemporary digital setting. These artists include Youth, Simon Emerson (Afro Celt Sound System), Smadj, Kirk Degiorgio, Soul Drummers, Pete Lockett and Bob Holroyd.
To launch this album internationally, there have been a series of events in London culminating in the album launch party on May 17 at 93 Feet East, Brick Lane, London E1 which featured the unique live
collaboaration of the San musicians and artists who participated in this remix project. This project aims to raise awareness and financial
support for the San Bushmen of Southern Africa, and is a non-profit
venture. All proceeds from these album sales and gigs will be donated to WIMSA (Working Groups of Indigenous Minorities of Southern Africa)

RONNIE HAWKINS AND THE HAWKS
(the sincerity of rock and roll)
He moved better than Elvis, he looked better than Elvis and he sang better than Elvis. His name was Ronnie Hawkins, a veteran of roadhouse rock and roll that could muster that controversial whiplash quality that gives rock and roll its edge. He formed his first group in 1952 while attending the University of Arkansas. From the mid-fifties he played piano for Carl Perkins and Conway Twitty. Ronnie's life was very much a to and fro movement derived from a restless spirit caught in the flurry of rockabilly. Times were hard in the mid-fifties and the competition was intense. One of Ronnie's earlier auditions was with Bill Justice who had just released one of the first guitar instrumentals, "Raunchy". But alas, nobody wanted to know.
In a short span of four years he had cut his first record (a cover of an Eddy Arnold tune), moved to Memphis twice, had a short stint in the army and then decided to settle in Canada in 1958. It was here that he recruited one of the tightest Canadian rhythm sections available - Levon Helm on the drums, future and ex-jailbird Robbie Robertson and classically trained Garth Hudson. Known as The Hawks this motley crew of rural songsters toured the Canadian outback extensively. Ronnie's first single was a thinly disguised re-write of Chuck Berry's "Thirty days" which he changed to "Forty Days". It reached the position of number 45 on the charts in 1959. His follow-up single "Mary Lou" superseded "Forty Days" and became Ronnie's biggest chart buster at number 26 in the same year.
By 1961 they had cajoled a very large elusive meat cutter called Rick Danko to take over the bass from Robbie Robertson. Ronnie continued to tour with his rhythm section up to 1964 and with the demise of rockabilly, left the Hawks to back up John Hammond Junior. The remaining members of The Hawks joined Bob Dylan in 1965 as his back-up band and then recorded as Levon & The Hawks and ultimately became The Band in 1968 with the release of their debut album 'Music From Big Pink'. Of note, various guitarists that moved through the Hawks were Roy Buchanan (ex-Dale Hawkins, Ronnie's cousin), Duane Allman, and Dominic Troiano.
Ronnie became a regular attraction at the Hawks Nest bar in Toronto. His 1963 recording of Bo Diddley's "Who do you love?" remains the finest every applied to wax. By the mid-sixties, Ronnie was recording for his own Hawk label in Canada regularly with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section. His last chart single "Down in the Alley", released in 1969, was given to him by John Lennon to recoup the $15000 phone bill that he incurred while staying with Ronnie at his Lakefield Ontario Ranch. It featured Duane Allman on slide and unfortunately find its way into the delete bins for 99 cents. In 1976 Hawkins appeared at the band's farewell concert, documented in Martin Scorsese's film "The Last Waltz".
These day you will find Ronnie hosting a television series called "Honky Tonk" in addition to owning a large farm and several businesses in Toronto. Ronnie's favourite line due to the fact that he has been around a long time was "since the dead sea was only sick" yet he has never ceased to expound the sincerity and rasping energy of rock and roll. He also appeared in various sound tracks such as "Heaven's Gate" and took the role of Bob Dylan in "Renaldo and Clara". Perhaps if the musical industry hadn't focussed so much attention on the Tex-Mex hip-hop of Buddy Holly or the sell-out Elvis Pelvis, musicians like Ronnie Hawkins would have had greater access to world market appreciation.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
TRIBAL FENCE - MARGARET SINGANA (Casablanca NBLP 7082)
For me, this is two-thirds of a great album. It picks up speed and interest with the fourth track, a nice cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain?', but after that it soars, thunders, moves, talks to me, and becomes authentic Singana, true to her roots, truly South African, and truly wonderful.
It's not that the first three songs are bad, though I think that with those songs Margaret Singana is better than her material. The first two songs are discofied and gets one into a disco mindset of anticipation, while the third track switches to soul with a James Brown cover, and Singana is nothing if not soulful. However, after track four, the flavor of the album changes to home ground where Margaret Singana sounds more sure of herself and in charge.
This album features the producing talents of Patric van Blerk, Trevor
Rabin and Julian Laxton (who is also one of the engineers). Neil Cloud drums on about half the tracks. The Stockley sisters pitch in on the final track: 'Hallelujah Freedom'.
Once past the first four tracks, this album becomes a True-to-Africa
production. The flow of the songs build until by the second side of the LP we are in the midst of a purely South African production. Lady Africa's version of Ramsay MacKay's 'Tribal Fence' is not to be missed, the word definitive comes to mind, and her version of MacKay's 'Orang Outang' is dynamic. Singana rocks through Laxton's 'Johannesburg'. The album closes with the catchy and elegiac 'Hallelujah Freedom'.
Seven or eight tracks of this eleven track album are wonderful, and the
first three are all right. For those seven or eight tracks, this is one not to be missed and well worth seeking out.
Margaret talks between some tracks in a few places and thereby adds a nice live feel to an excellent studio album. This could have been, should have been, a big one. It had everything going for it, from disco to soul to rock to authentic South Africa talent.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
THE ROAD IS MUCH LONGER - ROGER LUCEY (1979, 3rd Ear, 3EE 7004)
Reading the extract from former Security Police Warrant Officer Paul Erasmus' unpublished book at

listening to Roger Lucey's 'The Road is Much Longer' one is filled with mixed emotions. One feels sad, angry and strangely triumphant at the same time.
The article briefly tells the story of how, as a "Faithful Foot Soldier" of apartheid, Erasmus, through various heavy handed techniques ensured that Roger Lucey's promising career as a rock musician never spread beyond a small crowd of the converted. His lyrics and the subject matter of his songs weren't just close to the bone, they were embedded in the marrow. A prime example being 'Lungile Tabalaza' about a black activist who "fell" five floors to his death while in police custody ('Well whatever happened in that office only God and the cops will only know').
'The Road is Much Longer' is a powerful album, lyrically and musically.
Lucey's gruff-voiced, vitriolic tirade against the system is complimented by strong, at times thundering, rhythms. This is folk rock at it's angriest. The music is angry, the singer is angry and the lyrics are angry. But it's not a ranting anger, it's controlled and channelled into making a fine politically charged folk rock album. There is no letting up, no detours to explore the virtues of romantic love or the social significance of trains that go to obscure dorps in the Karoo. It would not have sat comfortably on most turntables in white suburbia when it was released and may still feel a bit
squeamish in a number of CD players. Don't expect any mercy here.
The sadness and anger come from the fact that a really talented South African musician was forcefully silenced. The feelings of triumph come from the fact that Paul Erasmus admits that he actually become somewhat of a fan of Lucey. The music won through, although I do wonder if Erasmus is a fan of the lyrics or just enjoys the wonderful rock sounds that emanate from this album.
This is an important and bruising album. Harsh, in your face and
uncompromising it should be an essential part of any serious collection of South African music.

South African artists continued to dominate the top 10 including the number 1 and 2 spots. This was the third week in a row for this number 1 and 2 combo. Country singers Lance James and the arrival of Barbara Ray's second top 10 hit, 'Happy Birthday Baby', completed the quartet. Ray and James would return to the top 20 as a duet in 1975 with 'The Greatest Christmas Gift' and again in 1977 with 'After the Fire is Gone', but not before having more solo hits.
Frenchman Francis Lai's 'Theme from Love Story' won him an Oscar for the movie score. The movie starred Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw and coined the phrase "Love means never having to say you're sorry". Lai has concentrated on producing movie scores, his most famous being for Claude Lelouch's 'A Man and a Woman'.
Judy Collins continued to fare well with her rendition of 'Amazing Grace'. She had had a relationship with Stephen Stills (of Crosby, Still & Nash) and was the subject of the song 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'
Lower down the top 20, South African's were making progress with Lincoln's 'Lonely Days and Lonely Nights' entering at number 19 and Des and Dawn Lindberg debuting at 15 with 'The Seagull's Name was Nelson' (a.k.a. Ode to a (Jail) Bird).

DEAD MEN DON'T TOUR

Tonia Selley has directed a wonderful documentary of the first (and hopefully not last) Rodriguez South African tour. It is scheduled for broadcast on SABC 3 at 9.30pm on the 5th July.
The Digest has had the pleasure of previewing this video and it is awesome! Wonderful concert footage, backstage antics, interviews with Craig Bartholomew and Sugar Segerman, Rodriguez and his family, the promoters, the fans, the musicians and the road crew.
All live footage was filmed at the concerts in Pretoria, Durban and the Blues Room in Johannesburg.
The soundtrack for the documentary is based on the 'Live Fact' CD (from Sony Music, available from http://www.oneworld.co.za) with video collages from the various performances. The concert footage is linked with interviews, backstage antics, rehearsals, etc.

MICK JADE
Mick Jade is surely one of South Africa's most prolific, underrated and vastly underutilized songwriting talents.
In his youth he gained the reputation of being "difficult" to work with, a false perception created and perpetuated only by people who had "done him wrong", (he tended to react badly to being ripped off).
Having always been a high spirited artiste, he regularly opted to starve rather than compromise his songwriting ability and integrity for the industry in the pre-"local content quota" days when amongst other things, cover music was the order of the day and original "local" music was an anathema.
As a result he tended to shy away from the industry and chose instead to write his music in reclusion.
On the few occasions that he released his music for commercial use he has had instant "hits" For example:
Sold gold in Australia with "I Wanna Go Back", No.1 on Radio 5 top 40 charts with "Scheme of Things" {sung by Sean Fury, released on the "Sidney Sessions" album in 1987 - ed} (at the time voted best South African composition), most popular TV theme and music with "The Villagers" series. (a note of interest largely unknown is that South Africa’s then most popular TV theme "The Villagers" {late 70s, the early days of SA television - ed}, was sung by Ben Masinga (a black man) who Mick had to smuggle into the SABC studio in order to record his voice. Had the "Powers-that-be" at the time known what he was doing, the theme would never have been used.
In the early eighties, RPM recorded an album of Mick’s original songs performed by "The Jade Brothers Band". This album was really hot and quite progressive for it’s time, with sax contributions by Dan Hill and Barney Rachabane like you’ve never heard. Unfortunately, when the band fired their manager for incompetent management, RPM shelved the album and to this day it sits unheard in the vault.
In 1984, Mick’s wife for the past 30 years Deborah, established Wallstone Publishing in order to protect the rights and interests to Mick’s vast catalogue of music.
From rock, pop, ballads, techno, R&B, country and western, Mick's writing has covered a wide range of musical genres and in amongst these works are numerous hits awaiting the right artist and producer to bring them to life.
Having spent the past years learning computer technology has finally enabled him to independently produce professional, high quality presentations of his music on CD.
He is currently completing a selection of moods, vibes and songs for distribution within the film and music industry.

THE KARMA CHAMELEON CONCERT
Once again the Walkabout was the scene of some top class South African music. Starting with an acoustic set by Henry Ate (Calmer-Anne Swanepoel?), there were some initial worries with the sound level barely rising above the noise of the crowd, but these were quickly sorted and soon the crowd were screaming appreciation as each new song was recognised. Accompanied by Julian Sun (I think), the lady with the voice that you could eat your dinner off held the audience enraptured in her coy, girl next door manner, yet with her smoldering songs she blended this juxtaposition to create a perfect sound and atmosphere.
We were treated to a number of the favourites, the chorus of "Just" even managed an encore in itself. Towards the end of her set she asked us all to Boo her as she wanted to know how it felt (the next act being used to this sort of treatment). She didn't like it, but still smiled.
Boo! were in top form again. Die Lipstick Boer pouting and mincing as usual, much to the bemusement of the English security staff who did look a bit worried when the crowd started booing, but someone must have explained the joke as they returned to their stony faced selves quite soon. The set remains the same, but the man who knows how to roll is r's had us all bouncing around in another lekker night out in London's jol calendar.
