BIRTHDAY WISHES TO PJ AND PIET
Last week we wished Rodriguez a happy 59th birthday. This week 2 stalwarts of the SA rock scene ("legends" you might say), celebrate their birthdays. PJ Powers (dubbed "Thandeka", the loved one, by her fans) was born Penelope Jane Dunlop in Durban on the 16th July 1960 and has been making a name for herself in the music world since 1979 when she sang in an all-girl group Pantha which also included Debbi Lonmon (later of Little Sister) on guitar. Everybody always mentions in reviews that Piet Botha is Pik Botha's son, so we won't. (John Samson has pointed out that Botha is an anagram of Thabo... hmmm). Piet shares his birthdate with Madiba on the 18th July. Piet will be 46, Nelson Mandela 83. As a member of Raven, Wildebeest, Jack Hammer and as a solo artist, Piet has carved his name indelibly in the minds of fans of both good-time rock and the Alt.Afrikaans movement. And how many artists do you know have had actor Billy Bob Thornton play drums in their band? MUTTZ NUTTZ THROUGH TO SEMI-FINALS
Muttz Nuttz played their way through to the semi-finals of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition with an energetic set at Morgan's Cat in Randburg Sunday 8 July.
From the four original songs they played, it is obvious that Muttz Nuttz cannot easily be pigeon-holed. Rock, alternative, a smattering of punk... it was all there. Although they are not creating a new genre of music, the band are innovative in their songwriting; it immediately becomes obvious that they are drawing on their influences rather than imitating them. This comes as a refreshing change in a South African music scene bustling with acts sounding just like Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Limp Bizkit, Greenday, etc.
Muttz Nuttz will be playing some gigs around the Gauteng area before the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition semi-finals, due to take place on the 7 October 2001. Do a search on Powerzone on Muttz Nuttz for dates of upcoming gigs.
Muttz Nuttz are Sta-Shaun on vox, Flodge on bass, Stevie Cow on guitars and Rob Nuttz on drums.

3. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
POLES APART - KAREN ZOID (EMI)
Talent abounds on this release and Ms Zoid has a fantastic voice. The
Afrikaans songs featured are superb and retain their identity, while the English ones miss the crossover intended and end up sounding like Sheryl Crow songs, not bad, but a little lame, if you get my drift. Overall a worthwhile purchase if only for the great South African take on the bonus track "Taxi". Given some time I personally think that she'll make a major impact. Nice!

HOLD ON - OFF THE EDGE

An "advance" CD of the band's forthcoming album, which should be out in the latter part of the year. You know Peter Hanmer and his band Off the Edge quite well by now - we've featured the music quite regularly on The Dinosaur Days {late night Sundays on 5FM - ed} in the past and we've also had the band members in the studio for a few interviews (most recently when Peter released the new Age of Innocence album with very promising singer Sherry-Lee Jones a few months ago).
"Unfinished Business" will be Off the Edge's 4th album since the band's inception in the eighties. This time, Peter's managed to secure the services of Giselle Mynhardt, one of the finest lady singers we've heard in years. She's replaced Judy Marshall, who emigrated a short while ago. Giselle's voice, although reminding one a tad of Stone the Crows' Maggie Bell and a bit like Janis Joplin or Cold Blood's Lydia Pense, has a certain uniqueness about it that makes her a real find. She sounds as is she'd be equally comfortable singing a laid back TIE (tongue in ear) bluesy ballad as she would be belting out a serious rocker. She's not too shabby in the looks department either!
Long-time bassist Tony Groenewald is also still involved in the band. Peter Hanmer, one of the best multi-instrumentalists (especially guitar) in the country, is sounding better than we've heard him to be and the songwriting is even more impressive. This is quite an achievement when you listen to the class and quality of the band's previous album, "Just Another Band", which was released in June 2000. We've only heard a few of the tracks from the mooted album, but if they're anything to go by, then surely "Unfinished Business" should be the album to finally crack it for this exceptionally talented band.
It's all well and good that a small minority of well known and respected radio stations and jocks such as Phil Wright and Rafe Lavine are doing what they can to promote the band - it's about time others came to the party as well. South Africa also has its fair share of talent in the music field. They may not play rap, rave, techno and other puke fodder, but they certainly deserve to be heard and appreciated. After all - it works overseas - why not here? Are we that unsophisticated that we can't appreciate music unless it has lyrics about some schmuck crapping somebody out for letting his dogs out?? Look out for a full review of "Unfinished Business" in these pages when it's released.

AS YET UNFINISHED...
Peter played some new Off The Edge tracks over the phone for me recently which gave me goosebumps... I can't wait to hear what they will sound like on CD! One of the songs is an, as yet, untitled blues instrumental with a raw guitar sound. Peter's guitar work is really sounding superb. 'Alone' is a power ballad which new vocalist Giselle Mynhardt makes her own. Another instrumental song 'Free Flight' has also been recorded for the album.
'Spacedream' which appeared on 'The Instrumentals' CD, and is only 1 minute 15 seconds long has now been dramatically extended into a 5 section opus that is over 9 minutes in length, but this track will only appear on Volume 2 of 'The Instrumentals' series. (BC)

HOT RS
Remember HOT RS (House Of The Rising Sun) from the 70s? HOT RS was the name of a faceless disco-rock studio band and also the name of their first album released in 1977. That album featured a 14 minutes plus disco-rock reworking of the classic House of The Rising Sun, made famous by the Animals in 1964. Their second album 'Forbidden Fruit' had as it's centrepiece a cover of Iron Butterfly's 1968 classic 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' cleverly combined with Frankie Vaughan's 1957 hit 'Garden Of Eden'. The 3rd album 'Heads Or Tails' was unfortunately quite disappointing.
Some famous musicians are rumoured to have played on these 3 albums released by HOT RS between 1977 and 1980. They include Trevor Rabin, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, René Veldsman, Duncan Mackay and Cedric Samson and of course anchor members Dan Hill and Kevin Kruger.
Kevin and Dan are collaborating again and are hard at work at Kaydee studios (Kevin & Dan... kaydee... geddit?) in Johannesburg on a CD titled 'HOT RS two', due out in August.

BARRY GOLDBERG
Goldberg was born in Chicago, Illinois and as a youngster would spend much time listening to the early rock and roll and rhythm and blues. His dream was to have a show band and retire at a very young age. When it came to the Hammond B3 few could match the diverse ability of Barry Goldberg. A close friend of guitarist Mike Bloomfield, he formed the Goldberg Miller Blues Band with Texan Steve Miller. Barry was sought after as a session keyboard player and supported Bob Dylan during the controversial appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. During this period he often backed up Mitch Ryder while later had a brief spell with a group called Chicago Loop.
He finally found base with a group called the Electric Flag which released their remarkable debut album "A long time coming". The Electric Flag performed at the Monterey pop festival with outstanding vigour and brass power. Comprising of an array of outstanding musicians, in particular Mike Bloomfield on electric guitar, drummer Buddy Miles and vocalist Nick Gravenites. The group although short lived, had an outstanding impact on the Haight Ashbury scene. Due to personal reasons, Barry left the group and proceeded to release a number of solo albums in the late sixties. It was also in this time that he focussed on song writing with Gerry Goffin while deeply immersing himself in the art of piano tutoring. He also appeared on the "Super Session" album with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper, yet after the demise of this ensemble regrouped with Carmine Appice of Vanilla Fudge and Ric Grech from Blind Faith. The group was known as KGB but failed to make any impact on the market.
Early 1974 he released an album in Muscle Shoals, Alabama under the production of Bob Dylan. Barry Goldberg would pop up in the most obscure groups, one in particular with Scottish blues singer Maggie Bell (Stone the Crows) or across the waters with pop singer B.J. Thomas. Outstanding Hammond B3 can be heard on the album "Barry Goldberg and friends", particularly "I think I'm gonna cry", "Jimmy the fox" and "Hole in my pocket". A worthy instrumental version of Lennon and McCartney's "Fool on a hill" places Barry in a very specialised and artistic dimension when it comes to blues.
Often assisted by outstanding guitarists such as Harvey Mandel, Duane Allman and Mike Bloomfield, Goldberg continued his session work and produced albums for Musselwhite and the Rockets. Various albums such as "Barry Goldberg and Friends" (1969) and reunion albums remain collectors items for the blues aficionados. His debut album "Blowing my Mind" with a seven single of the same name seem to go unnoticed in the diverse sixties. He featured on the classic "Devil with the Blue Dress on" and "Good Golly Miss Molly" by Mitch Ryder which scored a top five in 1966. He remains one of the best side men in the business and will long be remembered as a Jew with the true blues.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

I don't have an unbiased opinion about this CD, and see no reason to pretend to be objective. Hearing the music of Piet Botha and Jack Hammer, I think, "Here's one of the reasons I got into South African rock." Of course, the "South African" part can be dropped so that the statement reads, "Here's one of the reasons I got into rock."
'Bootleg' is the perfect representative Piet Botha and Jack Hammer CD. It contains live versions of older songs and some songs new to me. Piet Botha displays his strength at rock ballads, his gruff voice gentle and emotive, and it showcases him and Jack Hammer blasting fierce rockers such as 'Welcome to Azania'. We also get Jonathan Martin stepping forward for a sweet acoustic rendition of Led Zeppelin's 'Tangerine'.
On this CD, Jack Hammer is Piet Botha (vocals, guitar, piano), Jonathan Martin (vocals, guitar, cello), Tertius du Plessis (bass, on most tracks) and Paul de Waal (drums, on some tracks). What a band, talented rockers all.
As much as I do enjoy Piet's, for lack of a better term, rock ballads, his stand-out tunes are the big electric noise rockers. Nevertheless, I always begin this CD with track #1, 'The Game' (one of Bootleg's two
studio-recorded songs {originally released in 1999 on the obscure album 'Is' by Trip - ed}).
I prefer loud and fast rock, but have a high tolerance, even an appreciation for, honest, emotive songs such as Piet and Jack Hammer play. Piet's softer and more personal songs are not to be confused with Barry Manilow's smarmy music, no pieces of which stick to Jack Hammer's boot heels even though I think Barry's songs belong underfoot. Piet's slower, softer songs are authentic and intelligent songs.
The live version of 'Welcome to Azania' rocks more powerfully than the
studio cut on 'Anthology', which is a wild song there. This song contains the line 'We are not the chosen people'. I expect some listeners are infuriated by this devastating line. Powerful stuff, lyrically and musically, real music for real people, as Piet and Jack Hammer often are (See: 'Gypsy Suite' on the CD 'Death of a Gypsy').
'Midnight Angels' is a wow song. (As I listen to it, all I can say is
"Wow!"). Great lyrics, and the rock ideas are well-developed throughout its five minutes. The live versions of 'Fort Lauderdale', 'Liberty', and 'Goeienag Generaal' (another "Wow!"), also come across as more powerful and intense live than the studio takes, and those studio takes don't exactly slouch around, either.
I'm picking up enough Afrikaans to catch the gist of the songs from Piet Botha's solo CDs on this disc ('Donkermaan' and 'Goeienag Generaal'), but, oddly, can't find any Afrikaans speakers to practice the language with here in the Hill Country of Texas... Anyway, many lyrics are online at the comprehensive site, http://www.pietbotha.com.
If they had let me compile this CD it would be a two disc set. A few songs left off: 'Laat Die Wiele Rol', 'The Fisherman', 'Death of a Gypsy', and 'Street of Love'. Though 'Bootleg' represents Piet Botha and Jack Hammer perfectly, 'Bootleg' also complements Jack Hammer's 'Anthology' CD as if they were a two-CD set. 'Anthology', a collection of studio songs, and 'Bootleg', a live set, work well together in my SA rock collection.
In place of popping into Pretoria from Texas this weekend for a set or three of Jack Hammer, this live set satisfies. And that's my biased opinion.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

When John Lennon sang 'Help me if you can I'm feeling down', it was difficult to believe that he really wanted help as it was sung to the standard Beatles upbeat, cheeky grin moptop sound. When PJ Powers wraps her nicotine stained vocal chords around this classic, your guts start tingling, then you realise that your guts have been wrenched from you and you're left wandering where the hell that tingling sensation is coming from. You also wander how you can possibly help someone who has just delivered such a powerful, passionate and emotional plea.
The title track to Hotline's second album which also opens the album sets an incredibly high standard and one feels that after that, the rest of the album is bound to disappoint, but it doesn't. Following close on its heels is the hit single 'Feel So Strong' sung in collaboration with Steve Kekana. PJ's Bonnie Tyler vocals act as a counterpoint to Steve's fragile falsetto, weaved around a swirling organ sound, this is pop perfection.
There are more blazing rock tracks to follow. 'Give Me Your Love' pounds along at pace, while 'You're so Good To Me' with it's hushed, almost whispered verses and lungs-in-overdrive chorus make you want to grab your lighter and rush to the nearest stadium.
There are hints at the Afrorock sound that the group, and in particular PJ as a solo artist would embrace later on, but on the whole this is pure rock. Some highly charged guitar and drum work accompanied by the textured keyboard sounds from Bones Brettell form the solid pedestal on which the voice of PJ is proudly exhibited.
'Help' is a rock album that cries out to be heard, at times full on stadium rock; sometimes hints of Fleetwood Mac or a Foreigner ballad show through, and there are pauses for a few pop sensibilities, but the power and passion of the delivery, both vocal and instrumental, make this a South African classic.

She's still part of my band The Rock Rebels (along with Bill Flynn), and of course still gets solo gigs under her own name. When she needs a full band to back her for the solo gigs I act as her Musical Director and put a band together for her (not always all the members of the Rock Rebels).
She's been busy doing a new album for Scorpio Music (Joe Theron's company) for about the last year! I'm not involved with that, so I don't know when it's being released. When I've asked her she doesn't seem too sure either. She had originally talked about November last year! Better be good...

For the second week running there were no new songs in the Top 10. Lincoln were unable to get the edge on The Sweet, while the Dealians clung to the number 3 spot.
The South African were stacking up just below the top 10 with positions 11 to 15 all being local. Strongest contenders for top 10 placings were John Edmond with 'Boom Sha La La' and Gentle People's 'Rain Rain Rain'.
Tony Christie with 'I Did What I Did For Maria' and Mungo Jerry's 'Lady Rose' were the new entries into the top 20, with Lauren Copley and Fame & Price Together dropping out.

Not even the tears in heaven could wash away the injustice bestowed upon the Mexican spirit of a street poet called Rodriguez. With two brilliant albums, "Cold Fact" and "After The Fact" unfortunately only reaching the ears of the southern hemisphere (Australia / South Africa) Rodriguez became a scapegoat for the skulduggery of double minded record officials. What should have been an American legend became a Rich Folks Hoax. The earthy style of beat poet Rodriguez would crucify your mind at every note. His testimony has been fraudulently labelled as dead / burnt alive / or overdosed. Recently thanks to the determination and faith of a small internet group Rodriguez was found and raised to life. Many new converts have discovered his light.

ANIMALS AND KINGS AT THE JAM
Thursday 28 June
What do Kings, Pigs and Dogs have in common? Well, aside from being kick-ass bands, they all rocked the roof off of the Jam on Thursday 28 June. The Roswell Kings, Hog Hoggidy Hog and Not My Dog set the Jam on fire!
The Roswell Kings opened up the show. They are one of Cape Town's best-kept secrets. This hard rock band certainly knows how to perform. Andy Lund could be any top international band's frontman; he has the style and the stance to grab attention. New member to the band, talented Sven McAlpine is like the missing ingredient that once added to the pot, brings the whole dish, or in this case, band, together. Strong, powerful and resonant.
Next up was Hog Hoggidy Hog. They started off their nationwide tour to promote their album, 'Driving over Miss Davie', with this gig. Aside from guitar strings breaking, their performance was enjoyable. The punk scene is definitely growing in South Africa and we have a fine set of acts to show for it.
The evening culminated with an explosive set by Not My Dog. Every six months or so, Not My Dog make the trek to Cape Town. It is a trek that is well appreciated, as is evident by the enthusiasm the crowd displayed that evening. Although guitarist Juan Le Roux's presence was sorely missed - he couldn't join the guys on this trip, the show was still rocking. Playing songs from 'Dogumentary' and 'Jack Brown', as well as throwing in a few new ones to keep the set fresh, Not My Dog had the mosh pit fuelled and frenzied. "Up, up we lift the roof when we stand up!"
