OLD MUTUAL LAUNCH 2001 JAZZ ENCOUNTERS TALENT SEARCH

Following on from the success of the 2000 event, Old Mutual is confident that this year’s search will attract an even greater number of entries and again produce a new and exciting group of talented South African jazz prospects. The motivation behind the "Encounters" aspect of Old Mutual’s national jazz program is twofold. Firstly the SA jazz-loving public will be able to "encounter" the talents of a host of emerging young South African musicians and vocalists, as well as being able to see the more established SA jazz artists performing at the same time on the same stages. The winners of the Regional and National stages of the 2001 Jazz Encounters program will also receive all the benefits of "encountering" these legendary SA jazz artists by being given the opportunity to meet, rehearse and perform alongside these jazz stars.

Once again, a panel of five judges will be invited to adjudicate both
the regional and national stages in this year’s competition. These five
judges (TBA) will be assisted in the initial short-listing process by an extra panel of adjudicators.

Regions, categories and prizes:

The 2001 OMJE competition is again a national one, open to all SA jazz
musicians, singers or composers. It will however operate from three
central metropolitan centres - Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. These three cities will each host the Regional judging sessions and showcase performances.

The six adjudicated categories will be:
1) Vocal Jazz - solo contemporary jazz vocalist
2) Vocal Afro-Jazz - solo African jazz vocalist
3) Jazz Group/Soloist - contemporary jazz instrumental prize for soloist or group
4) Afro-Jazz Group/Soloist - African jazz instrumental prize for soloist or group
5) Composition - musical writing
6) Merit Awards - additional awards for those "deserving of special
mention" in the above five categories

The Prize Money for the National winners has been increased to R20000
each. The prize money for the regional winners, and merit and
composition awards, is still to be announced.

‘Call To Enter’ and Program:

Old Mutual again intends to cast its Jazz Encounters net as far and as
wide as possible. This is firstly to attract as broad a representation
of the emerging South African jazz as is possible, and secondly to
ensure that all and any new jazz performers in South Africa will be able to enter and be adjudicated for the Jazz Encounters program.

During the initial ‘Call To Enter’ stage of the OMJE 2001, approaches
will be made to both formal and informal music schools all over South
Africa. Direct communication relationships will be established with all
these institutions to ensure support for the program and OMJE teams will also spread the ‘Call To Enter’ forms around all key institutions,
campuses and schools to ensure a maximizing of possible entries.

There is a toll-free number (0800 201 410) for all enquiries, and an Old Mutual website (http://www.oldmutual.co.za) where downloadable entry forms are available. The freepost address to which these entries can be mailed is:
Old Mutual Jazz Encounters,
Freepost CB2397,
PO Box 12462,
Mill Street,
8010.

All of these contact details will be widely advertised in print and
radio campaigns. Applicants will be required to submit a completed
"Invitation To Enter" form as well as their best jazz performances
recorded on audiotape, CD, DAT, or videotape.

The adjudicators will begin by selecting the best candidates in each
category from all the initial entries. Those selected will then perform
at the regional auditions. Regional winners will be selected from these
auditions, and will then perform in the regional showcases alongside a
headline act. The national adjudications will also take place at these
regional showcases and the selected national winners will then perform
and receive their prizes at the National Gala Event which will again be
held in Johannesburg.

The closing date for entries is 8th August 2001.

This year, the Afribeat website will carry all news, info and updates
relating to the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters 2001. http://www.afribeat.com

JABU AND BAYETE CONFIRMED FOR WOMAD SINGAPORE - TANANAS NEWS

Jabu (Khanyile) and Bayete have been confirmed to perform at WOMAD
Singapore 2001, on August 31, and Sept 1 & 2. The band has also been
selected to be present and perform at the press conference on August 30. This is a great honour as only two bands out of the entire line-up are chosen.

Over 2000/2001, Tananas have travelled the world performing on WOMAD
stages in Spain, Australia, UK, US, Las Palmas and Singapore. Tananas
were then invited back to the UK for a nine gig national tour,
performing at prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall. This successful WOMAD exposure has established an enormous international network for Tananas and has also been instrumental in securing licensing deals around the world with Sony Music.

The WOMAD experience is not just about performing abroad and increasing
CD sales, it also provides the artists the opportunity to work and
collaborate with like-minded musicians, most of whom would never have
this opportunity except the umbrella of WOMAD. As a result Tananas has
recently toured and worked with the Drummers of Burundi on the 'Heart of Africa' UK tour, and, in November 2001, have been invited to perform on a double bill with the legendary US artist, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones in the UK.

ZER02HER0 NEWS AND UPCOMING GIG ACTION

Muties Mutate, Doll Up:

The Skyt Muties, one of Gauteng's most exciting live rock bands, will
henceforth be known as (drumroll, please) ... THE PARTY DOLLS. The band
feel that their new handle suits their disposition and exuberant
musical style down to the ground. Despite the mutating name there will
be no radical departure with regards to material and line-up in The
Party Dolls - they will still be partying around the superb songwriting
of Andrew Kay and the razor-sharp, groovacious playing of the usual boys in the band - Andrew Kay (songs, vocals, guitars), Sparky (backing vocals, percussion), Dave (drums), Chris (bass) & Derek (percussion).

The Party Dolls’ performance on Friday August 10 at the Radium Beer Hall (Louis Botha Ave, Orange Grove - 9pm) will be a celebration of their name change and also an opportunity for the media to touch base with this exceptional act.

Zen Arcade at the Wherehouse:

Zen Arcade will deliver a special unplugged in-store performance on
Thursday August 30 (5pm) at CD Wherehouse, The Zone, Rosebank. Copies
of ‘Snowflake', Zen Arcade's groundbreaking debut album, will be
available in the Wherehouse during the performance.

Zen And The Art Of Flower Arrangement:

Zen Arcade and Flowerheads - two giants of the recently launched
5fm-Sony ‘Showcase 3: Unearthed’ compilation of SA's most promising
rock groups - will be live together at Bugsy's Beat Bar on Saturday
August 11 (9pm).

There has been a great big buzz about the contribution of these two
bands to ‘Unearthed’ - come to Bugsy's and see, hear what all the fuss
is about.

Rumble In Suspension City:

Ever wanted to visit the Far East? Well ... come to Selection Lodge,
Springs, on Saturday July 28 to see some of SA's finest rock bands in
action: Zen Arcade, Saron Gas, Perez, Starseed, Model F, Siamese,
Evenflow. The mini-fest starts at 3pm.

LEBO MATHOSA, VICKY SAMPSON AND IZINGANE ZOMA IN CONCERT

Divas of the South African music scene will rock the Playhouse Opera
house in an explosive Gala Concert on National Women's Day - 9 August at 19h30. The big-name concert will be the absolute highlight of THE SOUTH AFRICAN WOMEN'S ARTS FESTIVAL 2001 when Lebo Mathosa, Vicky Sampson and Izingane Zoma bring their unstoppable vocal talents to festival fans.

Lebo recently launched her solo career with the release of her
successful album ‘Dream’ and the recording of a duet with R&B hero Keith Sweat. At the South African Music Awards 2001, she scooped the ‘Best Dance Album’ and ‘Best Dance Single’ awards.

Capetonian Vicky Sampson's name is synonymous with the (lottery) song
‘Afrikan Dream’, which made was penned by Mango Groove keyboardist Alan
Lazar. ‘Afrikan Dream’ earned her an international reputation and
thousands of fans. Her inimitable power, range and soul have ignited
audiences at the Miss South Africa and Miss World pageants and the Africa Cup Of Nations. Now gala concert audiences will get the chance to see Vicky live on stage!

Trevor Don-Jeany and band. The voices of Transnet's 90-member female

the gala concert in grand style and is a first for the festival.

Female Maskandi supergroup Izingane Zoma emerged in the early 90s,
claiming their place in this mainly male-dominated traditional music
form. Having just released their eighth album, the trio's previous seven albums earned them gold, double gold, platinum and double platinum awards. Thandoluni Phungula, and sisters Bongekile and Tholakele Ngobese, have earned a reputation as one of the most powerful female groups in all of Africa. Their explosive musical talent and well-loved lyrics complete the stunning line-up of artists for the gala concert.

3. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES

ABSOLUTE ZERO - SPIRIT (Independent)

I'm not a big fan of Jazz but even I have to admit that this is a killer album. 13 slick 'spirited' tunes whisk the listener away on a surreal journey of sound. Well produced and performed this album has no audible flaws and marks another in a range of gems that South African bands seem to be coming up with lately without the help of record companies. The future is bright if the standards set on this release are anything to go by. BUY IT!

IN THE MEANTIME - WATERSHED (EMI)
http://www.wshed.co.za/

Acoustic guitar sing-along songs that are pretty basic and pretty damn strong actually. Watershed have come a long way in a comparatively short period of time and that is no doubt due to some serious dedication on their part. Keeping it simple and very bass, drums, guitar and piano (reminding me of the band 'Live' in places) with obviously plenty of time spent on getting vocals and harmonies right, which is where these guys stand out. No great shakes lyrically, but in a world of one line repeat to fade, it's not bad at all. Thumbs up then.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

RORY GALLAGHER (An Irish Devil)

Irish quickness and the power of the Leprechaun came in the form of a fifteen-year old schoolboy who toured in the early sixties with the Fontana show band. Born 2nd March 1948 in Cork, Ireland, Rory was one of those guitarists that came up the hard way. He crossed the waters and developed his blues edge in Hamburg Germany, with bassist Charlie McCracken and ex-Them drummer John Wilson. During the summer of '69 he moved to London and formed his power blues three-piece called Taste, but for some historic reason the English never fully excepted the power vibrancy of this group. They launched an effective four albums, the debut album "On the Boards" and later "Live Taste" and "The Best of".

The group broke up in 1971 and Rory took to the road with smaller groups. He featured on the Muddy Waters London sessions (1972) and the brilliant come-back LP by English skiffle star Lonnie Donegan in 1978. America welcomed him with open arms and ironically his most successful live performance was the Irish tour in 1974, captured on the "Irish Tour 74" double album. Sadly Rory Gallagher expounded his blues during the height of the IRA revolution which could well have had a dampening exposé on his arrogant and rebellious blues expression.

Rory Gallagher could largely be ranked as one the most underrated guitarists to come out of the British Isles. Yet this qualification was only recognised on the continent by the discerning German and Dutch audience. One of the speediest acoustic guitarists that could expound the mandolin and the dobro with equal dexterity, Rory's strength came to the fore at live concerts. Jimi Hendrix once quoted "I've heard of the Irish quickness and now that I've seen it, it scares the hell out of me." He blew the minds of the hippies at the Isle of Wight concert and would often record his studio albums just before or after live gigs. The reason for this was that he drew energy from the audience which gave him the feeling and energy to release his Irish anger.

For those that have met Rory, he remains a gentle and soft-spoken country boy, always sporting his cheque shirt and denim jeans, a diverse contrast to the power and energy he released on stage. With the remarkable back-up of Gerry McAvoy on bass and Wilgar Campbell on drums, Rory amazed the crowds with the high-speed slide and finger picking of his Strat guitar. A roving gypsy of the electric guitar, Rory would flow with Celtic energy as he launched himself into the crest of the blues. Highly recommended albums such as "Deuce" / "Edged in Blue" and "Tattoo" are often overlooked in the world of blues. Rory passed away on the 14th July 1995 (A blue day for the blues) due to complications during a liver operation. He has never been given the true acknowledgement he deserves.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

TIMOTHY - CARIKE KEUZENKAMP

I enjoy pretty voices singing pretty melodies (I also enjoy rough male
voices and sinister screeching guitars that will clear the room of my wife in seconds, but that's another review), so my promiscuous musical taste is broad enough to include the music of Carike Keuzenkamp and Four Jacks and a Jill as well as that of Battery 9 and Jack Hammer.

Come on, don't you enjoy good pop songs? I know I really enjoy this inexpensive CD from Carike. Her light pop songs full of graceful and catchy melodies are a part of South Africa's cultural history, no?

What a fun CD 'Timothy' is. Ms. Keuzenkamp's bright, clear, happy voice and choice of songs are excellent. This album doesn't take chances, but that's okay. I bought it whimsically for Carike's version of 'Master Jack' {the Four Jacks and a Jill 1968 Billboard Top 20 hit - ed} so I knew what to expect, and have enjoyed Carike singing to me immensely.

The songs on 'Timothy' are Western pop, from the Western culture, but are so varied that I think of them as World Music -- Western World Music. Carike sings 'Kumbaya', some French songs, a lilting Caribbean number, some English and American pop, and a number of nice Afrikaans songs. All of which add up to a CD of international music: Western World Music by one who should add Linguist to her talents.

Her safe path can turn on her though -- I'm so familiar with Johnny Cash's 'I Walk the Line' that my expectations allow for no other version than the original, what has become a signature song for The Man In Black. Nothing wrong with Carike's version, it's sincere and honest, but I've never heard anyone else sing this song, let alone a woman, so I think, "This is good, but it reminds me of Johnny's own version."

Aside from this CD, on One World <http://www.oneworld.co.za> there are five other CDs, among them one for children ('Carike In Smurfland'), and one of Christian songs sung with children (Bybel op Note'). Her voice would be a lovely way to hear Christian music, but I doubt I'll hear her kiddie CD of Smurf songs anytime soon.

Out of my limited knowledge (but vast appreciation) of South Africa, some names jump out at me from the liner notes and credits. How about Mauritz Lotz on elektriese kitaar? There's also Jethro Butow on akoestiese kitaar, Kevin Kruger on slagwerk (which I guess loosely translates as "slapping the skins"), and Theo Erasmus on trekklavier.

For some groups, all I need are the greatest hits albums, for others I want their entire back-catalogue. In this case, I'm curious about Ms. Keuzenkamp's Christian music and Afrikaans CDs. I'll buy another CD or two of Carike's someday, I enjoy her voice and selection that much.

I'll probably order 'Grootste Treffers', or 'Bybel op Note', though, not 'Carike In Smurfland'. My promiscuous musical taste is not that
all-embracing. Come on, aren't you just a least bit curious to hear Carike Keuzenkamp again (or maybe for the first time)?

Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas
mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com

{Carike was born in Den Hague, Holland and came to SA at an early age. The song 'Timothy' was the theme for the film "The Professor and the Beauty Queen" and hit the number spot on Springbok Radio in 1967. 'Timothy' was also a number 1 hit for Four Jacks and a Jill in the same year, see http://www.rock.co.za/files/sahits_1967.html - ed}

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

VOORTVLUGTEND - AKKEDIS
http://www.stellenbosch.co.za/akkedis/

The Dennis brothers are a couple of ordinary good natured ou's, but put them on a stage with a guitar in Arthur's hand, and a drum set in front of Rudi (aka Pamela Anderson), add a bass guitar-playing Barry Steenkamp and the occasional blast on the saxophone from Swart Gabriel and these good natured ou's will teach you a bit about rocking.

Their second album 'Voortvlugtend' is a collection of fine rock tunes,
ranging from the carefree 'Datsun Stanza.1800.SSS 2-Tone CY 158563' {what a title! - ed} that borrows heavily from the early Dire Straits sound, through the bouncy Lion Sleeps Tonight cover of Valiant Swart's 'Sweet Stellenganga' to the more serious and hard rocking 'Jannie Cocaine'. They display a great maturity and are able to create memorable melodies with astute Afrikaans lyrics about the ups and downs of life as white South African youth.

Although somewhat calmer than their live act, the album has a rawness and an edge to it that will keep the listener's attention throughout. This second generation boererock group is certainly one to watch, and 'Voortvlugend' is definitely a CD to own.

8 [13] Rain, Rain, Rain - Gentle People*
9 [8] Joy To The World - Three Dog Night
10 [11] Boom Sha La La - John Edmond*

* South African Artists

Another healthy week for local artists with 5 out of the top 10 being South African. The Sweet were unmoveable at the top, clocking up their 4th week at number 1, diminishing Lincoln's chances of attaining the coveted top spot.

The Zambian connection is prominent in this top 10 with both Lincoln and Gentle People having originally formed in that country, as well as John Edmond having been born there. The southwards migration of these acts meant that we could call them ours by the time they were charting.

Meanwhile John Kongos was entering the top 20 with 'He's going to step on you again', nearly 2 months after it had debuted in the UK charts. Kongos joined the top 20 at the expense of Alan Garrity's 'Put you Hand in the Hand' which had enjoyed a 13 week run, including 4 at the top spot. It was also the 5th biggest hit of the year.

South African's at Number 1 this week:

Kentucky Blue - Lauren Copley

Also this week in 1978, Clout's 'Substitute' reached the number 2 spot on the UK charts and for 3 weeks was held off the top spot by John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John with their hit from Grease 'You're the one that I want'.

RODRIGUEZ - ALL THE COLD FACTS
http://www.sarockdigest.com/rodriguez

HEIKKI'S SUBURBIA BUS TOUR

In the sixties, there were these people called hippies. It can be said that a long-haired, dark-skinned, free-thinking musician, like Rodriguez could have been labeled one. In my youth, I recall hearing about how the "rich folks" (those living in the suburbs), would come down to the inner city of Detroit to actually see these "oddities" in their natural environment. Maybe even take a picture or two. This happened to be my neighborhood and some of my people.

Rodriguez had a very good friend named Heikki. I remember a large man with long blond/brown hair. He had a very nice home, a wife named Linda and two huge bull mastiff dogs. Despite stereotypes, Heikki was a mathematician from Estonia {Estonia is a republic in North-Eastern Europe, near Finland - ed} who rode a classic motorcycle. In fact, one of the places that Rodriguez played, a "motorcycle funeral", was for one of Heikki’s friends. The motorcycle club was called "The Penetrators".

Anyway, someone had made fun of Rodriguez’s friend. Protective of Heikki’s feelings, Rodriguez organized what I consider to be a peaceful form of retaliation. A bus was chartered, full of hippies, four gallons of wine, etc. The group went to Grosse Point, Michigan and surrounding areas where they visited suburbian malls and neighborhoods on a tour of their own. The rest, is in the music. The story made the newspapers in Detroit and also reached Florida (a southern US state).

Eva Rodriguez

{'Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour' is a track on the 'Coming From Reality' album, better known in South Africa as 'After The Fact' - ed}

ROBIN WALSH

It is really cool to see that Robin Walsh is getting some international coverage. Check out what he has to say at http://www.nuendo.com

We need to see more coverage of SA [artists/enginners and studios] like this on international websites.

Best regards,
Peter Tuerk.

BAGHITI KHUMALO

Baghiti Khumalo plays bass with Paul Simon, and I love his sound. I would like to find out more about him (Khumalo). I play bass, and I am trying to find out what kind of equipment he uses. Please email me if you can help.

FAIRY TALES

I am a South African living in Australia and I have been searching for a song I heard in SA during the 60s or possibly early 70s. I seem to recall a single male vocalist and these are the lyrics I remember: (the whole song is about nursery rhymes but it's not really a kids song):

"It's so wonderful,
It's so marvelous,
And it's believed to be
absolutely true in fairyland
And if the wizard had to wave his wand
then you would understand
Why every little girl and boy in the world
Believes in Fairy Tales"

I really hope you can help me - it's driving me demented!

Thanks

Jackie

{'Fairy Tales' was recorded by John Edmond in 1969 and went to number 13 on the Springbok charts in January 1970 (his first chart hit). John came from Zambia and a had a number of big pop hits in the early 70s including 'Pasadena', 'Every Day Every Night', 'Toy Train' and 'Boom Sha La La' which was at number 10 on the charts 30 years ago this week - ed}

VINYL COLLECTING

John & Phillipa Cooper - Cooperville Times
(Parlophone PCSJ 1205, 1969).
A brilliant unknown gem. Rock, Folk, Psych, it has it all. 11 original compositions worthy of anything released from any part of the universe in 1969 - or any year before or after! Now for the 8 million rand question - who can tell me anything about this band? The sleeve notes are rather economic.

Also looking for listings of South African music. Vinyl only. I'm trying to get my wants list up to date.

Cheers

JANE LONDIS

I am trying to find some music by Jane Londis. She released 2 singles in 50/60s with EMI in South Africa. One of the singles was called 'Picking Up Pepples' which was originally written by Miriam Makeba and she performed this in English and her native African. She then used to perform in the Three Cellars Nightclub & then joined a band called Golden City Dixies, who also released an album on Gallotone I think. Can you help?

THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT (WIMOWEH)

I am in a women's chorus and we are singing "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and wonder what the word "owimoweh" means. Also ... what is the
meaning of the song? We can sing better when we know what it means. We think it is an African hunting song. Can you enlighten us?

Thanks
Dottie
mailto:DottieVinopal@aol.com

{The full story and the origin of "wimoweh" (actually "uyimbube" misheard by Pete Seeger) can be found online in the 3-part series "Where does the lion sleep tonight?" by Rian Malan at the 3rd Ear Music website: http://www.3rdearmusic.com/forum/mbube2.html - ed}

SPRINGBOK RADIO

Back in the 70s there was a song that was quite a hit on springers top 20 (welcome, all you hipsters, swingsters.... etc) it was with a mom and daughter combination singing about some road trip they were going to take possibly to find daddy..... or something... do you have any idea what I might be referring to?

Also is there any resource on the world wide web that features the old Springbok radio and any way for us to access those old radio programmes... Squad Cars, No Place To Hide, etc, etc?

sincerely,
Ari Dembo

MORE SPRINGBOK RADIO

I wonder if you could put a request in the SA Rock Digest for anybody with any recordings from the old Springbok Radio or The English Service, to contact me? I'm trying to gather some of these old programs for posterity, as the master tapes for those stations have long since been destroyed. Such a pity! I hope somebody has an old Squad cars recording or two.

Many thanks

DORP AND MY LATEST EX AT THE WHAMMY BAR
Nadia Neophytou

Dorp and My Latest Ex performed at the Whammy Bar in Tableview on Saturday 14 July. The rain and wind may have left those outside feeling cold but the vibrant music from the bands left those inside very warm indeed.

My Latest Ex opened up the show. As far as punk bands go these guys follow the trends and create music that is a reflection of life through their eyes. This band is a perfect example of how a band can evolve through practice and having a semi-residency at a place like the Whammy Bar. Starting out, M.L.E were shy and unsure of themselves. What used to be nervous ramblings between songs has become witty retorts between brothers on stage. Although M.L.E are not brothers, their onstage chemistry shows that they could be. M.L.E know how to entertain a crowd and create music with an emphasis on fun.

I was grateful that Dorp took the time to come out to Tableview before going back to London. Lead singer, Pieter Bezuidenhout is like a little boy on stage, unbridled with energy and enthusiasm. His expressions, his dances, his gestures display an innocent freedom. A complete abandonment of inhibitions. With Dorp's new, albeit downscaled, size, the band create an eclectic mix of ragga, big beats and funky electronica. Seeing Dorp rekindles one's sense of sparkle for life. They make you want to sing and dance your heart out without caring about the judgements of others. Music is their passion and their instruments are their toys. They play and experiment with different and unique styles, anything to get you to move your body!
