SA MUSIC WEEK

It began in 1999 as SA Music Day and last year it grew into SA Music Week. From all accounts the 2000 event was generally a full and successful week, so the organizers are sticking with the seven day version for a while before going the month and year route. This year the week has been liberally stretched over two weekends (Saturday 25th August to Sunday 2nd September) to gain maximum exposure.

As usual, there's been the usual wordage about the relevance, value and neccesity of hosting this national event. Despite all that, the fact is that this type of internal musical promotion is common to other countries with smaller markets and definitely generates increased interest and sales. So to all concerned, involved and participating in any way we say "onwards and upwards" and we hope your dedication, motivation and energy achieve the desired results and rewards!

LAURYN HILL HEADS BLACK AUGUST SA BILL

Lauryn Hill, the (ex?) Fugees vocalist and multi-Grammy winner for 'The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" album, will be appearing live in SA for the first time in September at the three inaugural Black August South Africa concerts. With a new album on the way, Lauryn Hill will headline a world-class hip hop bill that will include SA acts MoodPhase 5 and Bongo Maffin alongside some big international names like Common, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Jeru Da Damaja, Black Thought & Scratch (The Roots), Hedrush and Imani Uzuri.

Black August was established to facilitate the international cultural exchange between youth across the globe, with a view to support and promote social consciousness and positive self-expression among the hip hop community especially in under-developed communities. Over the past three years Black August has been staged in the United States and in Cuba. The 4th annual event expands to include a three-city tour of South Africa under the auspices of Eargasm Entertainment.

The Black August South African tour will create a platform for youth to be part of a greater movement focused on developing communities to be self-sufficient. Eargasm Entertainment will use part of the proceeds to contribute to the development of hip hop in Africa by funding the production and release of an all-African hip hop compilation where the youth can express their views through the music, with the long-term creation of international cross-cultural exchange and worldwide distribution.

The venues for Black August South Africa are as follows: Westridge Stadium, Durban (August 29), The Sun Dome at Northgate, Johannesburg (1 September), and Bellville Velodrome, Cape Town (5 September).

COLOUR ME IN - SUNWAYS

Sunways' brand new single 'Colour Me In' entered the 5FM chart at no.17 last weekend, the highest debut entry of any local or international song in the last two years. The single from the band's new album 'The Moon is a Spoon' is the second radio release, and a music video for the song appears on the CD (playable on a PC).

The band have just returned from a highly successful performance at this year's Oppikoppi Festival and continue with club dates around the country before the next major festival of the year, Woodstock 3. Sunways will be performing at this year's Woodstock on Saturday 29 September and will be flying out of the country to the United Kingdom on the 2nd October. Sunways will be playing their first UK date on Wednesday 3rd October at Belfast's premiere music venue, The Empire and have many other club dates confirmed in both Ireland and London.

Catch the band at this year's Woodstock 3 as well as the 5FM concert at the Pretoria State Theatre on Wednesday 29 August. Vote for 'Colour Me In' and 'Venus in her Eyes' for SA Music Week. Send an e-mail with your name and the names of the tracks to mailto:satop40@5fm.co.za and visit the brand new Fresh Music website http://www.freshmusic.co.za for further info.

OOMBLIK VAN WAANSIN - MEL BOTES

Mel is obviously a fan of Pink Floyd. The first clue is the title of this debut solo CD from the man behind the epic 'About Time' by David's Confession released in 1999. 'Oomblik Van Waansin' loosely translated means "A Moment of Madness" or could even mean "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" (sound familiar?). The next clue is the CD cover (don't worry we will get to the music soon... it's worth waiting for). A sad man (Mel himself) sits on a hospital bed (or maybe its an army one) in the middle of the veldt and in the background stands a man surrounded by a flock of birds. Take a look at the 'Delicate Sound Of Thunder' and 'Momentary Lapse' covers again... get the picture?

This is a very difficult CD to review, not because it isn't superb, but because the usual "Brian Currin's beginner's guide to writing CD reviews" fails dismally. To say that Mel sounds like Pink Floyd meets Dire Straits in Piet Botha's lounge, though accurate, just does not do justice to this incredibly unique and powerful album.

'As' (Afrikaans for 'If') was the winning entry in the contemporary category of last year's Beeld/ Geraas and Janus Musiek's "Vuurdoopliedjiewedstryd" (Baptism of Fire Song Competition). 'Stormsee' (Storm Sea) is a stand-out track, with backing voices by Anna Davel, Jolette Odendaal and Petronel Baard, on an album of truly great songs. Mel is ably supported throughout by Clinton Waring on piano, Vinnie Henrico on drums and bassist Leon Ecroignard. Guitarist extraordinoire Mauritz Lotz duets with Mel on the closing track, an instrumental take on 'As'.

The beginner's guide to CD reviewing has the following words listed: superb, brilliant, wonderful, great, epic, incredible and powerful with the instructions that only two may be used in any one review. Now what to I do? OK, I give up... buy the album and find your own synonyms for this timeless masterpiece. (BC)

TASSENBERG ALL STARS 2 - VARIOUS ARTISTS

This CD was recorded live at the Tassenberg Stalteater at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees, Oudsthoorn earlier this year (The first CD in this series was recorded at last year's festival). If you were there at the gigs to see Valiant Swart, Jack Hammer (featuring Piet Botha & Jonathan Martin), Not My Dog, Beeskraal, Akkedis, Spinnekop, Delta Blue, Frosted Orange and Mikanic rock the KKNK then this CD will be a great souvenir. If you weren't (and I know I wasn't), then this is a perfect reminder of what we missed.

If you've always wanted to have at least one concertina-driven traditional boeremusiek song in your collection, but you know you are just too "cool" to buy a Nico Carstens, Klipwerf Orkes or Worsie Visser CD, then your worries are now over. In between the hardcore rap-metal of Not My Dog (they do a brilliant version of Led Zep's 'Immigrant Song' on their own 'Disco Very' CD), the delta blues of Delta Blue, the raw guitar rock of Valiant Swart, Spinnekop and Akkedis and the intelligent virtuosity of Frosted Orange and Mikanic appears Beeskraal with 'Strate van Pretoria' (sounding vaguely like the J Geils Band's 80s hit 'Centrefold'), 'Noord-Transvaal' and 'Zol'. I have never heard a concertina (or a banjo) rock like this before and I'm sure there can't be many boeremusiek songs about smoking 'Zol' (Marijuana)!

This CD was launched on Friday and Saturday night this past weekend at the High Street Theatre in Durbanville, and by all accounts a great time was had by all. (BC)

REMEMBERING THE SA BANDS FROM THE 60s
http://www.rock.co.za/legends

Do you remember the bands of the 60s in South Africa? Thanks to vinyl collector extraordinaire, Tertuis Louw, and the wonder of the Internet, they will now never be forgotten. Read about The A-Cads, The Bats, The Upsetters, Mickie Most and the Playboys, Johnny Kongos and his G-Men, The Silhouettes, Dickie Loader and the Blue Jeans, the many faces of William Boardman (Billy Forrest, to you) and many, many others.

Webpages include full discographies, album covers, track listings, news clippings and many rare photos. A number of the artists themselves have contributed to the info archived on these webpages compiled by Tertius. See where drummers Kevin Kruger and Colin Pratley started out, read about Dickie Loader being backed by Freedoms Children (yes, really) and discover the early history of world-famous producer Mickie Most.

Visit: http://www.rock.co.za/legends and click on the "60s" (you can also choose any other decade between the 50s and now).

It is the stated philosophy of the South African Rock Files that all our websites are always "under construction" or "work-in-progress", so if you have more info than we do, just please send it on in (or put up your own website and we can link to you).

SHILOH'S CORNER

JAMES CARR

Out of the gospel holler of the Sunset Travellers and the Harmony Echoes came the deep and gifted soul of James Carr (born 13 June 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee). Discovered by Memphis mentor Roosevelt Jamison, while James was working day-jobs in various hospitals, he took it upon himself to act as manager for the very shy and timid James Carr. James expounded the soul of gospel with an intensity that very few of his contemporaries could emulate. A US top ten in 1966 with "Love Attack" and "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man" gave the world the most underrated voice of all time.

In 1967 he released the classic "Dark end of the Street" co-penned by Dan Penn / Chips Moman which reached the number ten place on the R&B charts. During the eighties this track re-appeared on the very Irish Commitments sound track yet public acknowledgement of Dan Penn or for that matter James Carr was plus/minus nil. During the nineties Dan Penn came out of retirement and performed some outstanding live performances with Spooner Oldham on keyboards. These live concerts were largely due to the success of the Commitments soundtrack and various hit singles by the Boxtops that featured Spooner as the songwriter. Other respected versions of this particular track could be found by Gram Parsons, Ry Cooder and Richard Thompson, guitarist for Fairport Convention.

After the death of Otis Redding, James Carr was groomed to be his natural successor, yet conflicting reports reveal that James would take up to six sessions to do one song in the studio and often clam up during vital takes. Sadly his fragile personality was increasingly disturbed by drug abuse and James's final hit "To Love Somebody" was launched in 1969. The following year Goldwax Records collapsed and James lost a fortune in royalties. As the years progressed various come-back live performances resulted in disaster such as the Japanese tour where he froze on stage.

In the nineties he re-appeared on a live album recorded in Italy and later recorded his "Soul Survivor" album which had a single release in the USA. He remains a legend of the sixties and to quote Dan Penn 'the only version of "Dark End of the Street" is James Carr'. Soul would be incomplete without at least one album by the fragile James Carr.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

ROTATING MUSICIANS: SOME OF MY FAVOURITE SA BANDS
Piet Botha and Jack Hammer
Peter Hanmer and Off the Edge
David Birch and Squeal

Sometimes I ask myself, "Is this somewhat odd, an American enamored with the music scene of another country?" My answer to myself is always, "Shut up and listen to the great music."

These days, South African rock music provides me nearly constant company. But I don't hear it so much as the music of another country but simply as excellent music. Among the many artists whose work I enjoy are some whose CDs do a lot of rotating on my CD player.

In these three musicians and bands one can see my true taste in music. I like rock. I occasionally listen to pop, pennywhistle, folk, and so on, but rock is the true music of my people, my official musical language, if you will. Why listen to anything else? And these three bands make rock that satisfies: music made with electric guitars, drums, and the human voice.

Piet Botha and Jack Hammer -- When they rock, the guitars are like crystal monoliths (I'm trying to think of big, sharp, and clear images) and the drums thunder. When Piet and Jonathan sing and play personal songs, say 'Friend' or 'Liberty', I'm drawn into the song. Piet Botha and Jack Hammer can rock and sing a pretty and meaningful song.

I enjoy Piet's music so much, I even buy his Afrikaans CDs. Definitely one to catch performing on the Rock Route of South Africa.

Off The Edge -- Still the best music for driving the long and empty
stretches of Texas's rural roads. Peter Hanmer's soaring guitar inspires noble feelings, or serves as an excellent soundtrack to one's driving thoughts, hopes, and schemes.

Whether the band is Off The Edge or Age Of Innocence, a pretty female voice often accompanies Peter Hanmer's skillful guitar. Check out guitarist Peter Hanmer, Tony Groenewald on vocals and bass, and Judy Marshall or Sherry-Lee Jones on vocals on these incarnations of rock made real.

Peter can build a cathedral with his guitar, as he does in 'St. Aidans', where he plays guitar passages that make me think of a rock symphony without strings or horns. And he can rock or play melodically (were any of y'all waiting for that word?), and stir the emotions with his guitar.

The female vocals, Tony's singing, Peter's singing guitars, and the
rock-steady drums all combine into an effortless flow that sometimes rocks along, sometimes flies to the sky, and always sounds great.

Squeal -- Rock, pure rock, distilled to its fifth essence. Sometimes a rock trio, sometimes a quartet, but always with David Birch. Squeal is steel wires, drums, and singing -- the blood, muscle, and bone of a pure rock band. But don't think Squeal goes for the bludgeon effect, because they play with frenetic finesse instead.

Squeal has been less prolific than the two groups mentioned above, but the three Squeal releases ('Long Pig', 'Man and Woman', and 'Civilized?') are fantastic rockers. Sometimes with Barry Van Zyl on drums and Brett Barnes on bass, Squeal remains devoted to rock that can be listened to over and over.

But three CDs are not enough, David! How about a new CD, maybe a live set? The Powerzone video download of 'Man and Woman' and 'Hey Yah' from Woodstock '99 whet my interest in live rock by Squeal. We can download the EP 'Begin' at Friedjam, but how about 'Begin' on CD? I'm in line, dollars-into-Rands in hand, if David Birch and Squeal release more CDs.

The body of work that these three bands have produced adds up to a healthy stack of silver-colored plastic. But these are only three reasons out of many why I am a devotee of South African rock. Now I'm going to shut up and listen to some great music.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

FREE WHITE AND AFRICAN - NICK TAYLOR
http://www.letterfromafrica.co.za

The day I was born, Nick Taylor was at number 1 in the then Rhodesia with the U.D.I. Song (thanks to Chris Kimberly for that piece of info), and enjoying a very sucessful career. After a long hiatus, he's back with a new album and by all accounts, a successful and well-received live show.

Listening to this, one can't help feeling that it should have been pressed on vinyl as Nick certainly has one foot firmly planted in the 60s, but there are also astute observations on White South Africa in the early 21st century. The nostalgic Rock 'n Roll of 'Dancing the Night Away' and 'Lea Road Hop' will certainly keep his old fans happy and for any youngster out there, will paint a fair picture of what your parents got up to. Then you have songs like 'Packing for Paarl' and the title track which take a very positive approach to being white in the new South Africa, the sentiments in the latter being quite admirable.

I did find some of the sentimentality, particularly on the opening track 'Letter from Africa' a bit over the top, but I have put that down to the generation gap. And while on the subject of sentimentality, put aside some spare time to just sit and listen to what I regard as the highlight of the album, the slow building ballad 'Sing into your Heart', as it is one of those ballads that are so heartfelt that they hurt.

With his smooth vocals, upbeat outlook and ear for a good tune, Nick Taylor has produced an album of catchy pop 'n roll that you find yourself singing along with after a few listens. If the sleeve notes hadn't included a picture of him, I would have imagined a barefooted hippy with his long hair greased back and cascading down the back of his leather bikers jacket, beer in one hand and turning the boerewors on the braai with the other, but he looks more like my pa.

1 [1] Co Co - The Sweet
2 [2] I Did What I Did For Maria - Tony Christie

9 [13] You - Peter Maffay
10 [9] Mozart Symphony No. 40 - Waldo De Los Rios

* South African Artists

'Co Co' clocked up it's second week at the top and The Sweet clocked up their eighth consecutive week at number 1. The challenge for the top came from Tony Christie and SA's Gentle People. The Peanut Butter Conspiracy's seemed to have stalled at number 4.

John Kongos' 'He's going to step on you again' had entered the UK charts in May of 1971 where it had ended up peaking at number 4. It took 3 months for South Africa to propel him into the top 10 of his homeland. This catchy rock tune with it's pounding afro rhythms was covered in the 1990's by Manchester's Happy Mondays.

One of the new entries into the top 20 was the strangely titled 'Joey the Lipstick Collector' by the artist formerly know as Quentin E. Klopjaeger, now simply calling himself Dennis. The man behind this was none other than Mr Pseudonym himself, the artist currently known as Billy Forrest.

It was a very good time of the year for South Africans reaching the top spot, as in five different years during this week, there was a local artists at number 1. See below for the full list.

South Africans at Number 1 this week.

The Wedding - Jody Wayne (1970)
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday - Jessica Jones (1972)
Ramaja - Glenys Lynne (1976)
Paradise Road - Joy (1980)

GWYNNETH ASHLEY ROBIN
Extracts from the sleeve notes for her 'Greatest Hits' CD released in 1997. Reprinted here by kind permission of Malcolm Lombard.

Gwynneth Joubert was born on 20 August 1960 as the oldest of three children. She started singing with various bands at the age of nine at her father's pleasure resort, Robinson Lake, near Randfontein. She was "discovered" by singer Jody Wayne, who was engaged for several performances at the resort. Impressed by her talent, Jody took Gwynneth under his wing and helped the young performer secure a recording contract with Teal Records. Jody also wrote and produced most of Gwynneth's recording material. Gwynneth's mother, Val, was pregnant with the family's third child. She and husband Chris decided to name the baby Ashley, should it be a girl. A boy was born and they named him Brandon. When the family had to choose a stage-name for Gwynneth, "Ashley" came to mind and "Robin" was derived from Robinson Lake - to honour the birthplace of Gwynneth's singing career.

American group, The Osmonds, were very popular locally and in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in the early Seventies (referred to as "Osmond-mania" in the press). The youngest of this musical clan, 10 year-old "Little Jimmy Osmond", had scored a worldwide million-seller with his hit Long Haired Lover From Liverpool in April 1973. Jody thought that a tribute from one young artist to another would be a successful spin-off for Gwynneth's career, since she was twelve at the time and, simultaneously, that the song Little Jimmy would appeal to thousands of Osmond fans - he was right on both counts.

Little Jimmy reached #1 on the Rhodesia's "Lyons Maid Hits Of The Week" chart for two weeks in December 1973. The song reached the #1 on Springbok's Top 20 Hit Parade in March 1974 and spent 14 weeks on the charts. Little Jimmy garnered Gwynneth two Gold Discs - one locally and one for sales in Rhodesia, where the single sold 33 000 copies - a record in that country for the sales of a single at the time. Although Gwynneth was popular locally, she enjoyed Super-Star status in Rhodesia, where she toured several times before undertaking her first country-wide tour locally. She was also popular with Rhodesian soldiers engaged in the bush war of that time, and often performed for them in the operational areas.

Her second hit, Little Soldier Blue, reached #3 on the Rhodesian charts. Little Soldier Blue peaked at no.9 on Springbok's Top 20 hit parade in July 1974 and spent 9 weeks on the charts. Gwynneth received the 1974 Springbok (mini-SARIE) Award as South Africa's Most Promising Female Vocalist. She toured Rhodesia regularly with a host of artists in the popular Meet The Stars shows, including Jody Wayne, Gert Potgieter, Alan Garrity, Barbara Ray, Murray Campbell, Neil Herbert, Don Stanton, Marie Gibson, Jonathan Butler and Lionel Petersen and she also featured as a regular guest on television there.

On 14 May 1976 Gwynneth entered the recording booth to cut her first Afrikaans single. She recorded two songs, Tesame and As Ek 'n Lied Kon Skryf. She was tragically killed a week later along with the members of her backing group (Danie Schoeman, Vic Rall and Robby Potts), in a light aircraft accident at Penge in the Eastern Transvaal.

She left an indelible mark in the hearts of the lives she touched with her music.

5.FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK
-------------------------------

MIDIs

I am desperately looking for 4 midi files by SA artists, namely:

1. Show me and I'll show you - by Mia? (I've also heard this song done by a male vocalist, have no idea who though, perhaps you could shed some light.
2. You touch me - by Dawnay
3. These days - by Kreesan
4. Sugar Man - by Just Jinger

Any idea where I can locate these midis? ..... and what about other South African songs?

Cheers

I'M SUFFERING!

I have since discovered that the website Tequila.co.za... a South African music production house that represents artists has a small one line to say about my hit band and song. The band is Ozila and the song title is: 'Life Saver (I'm Suffering)'. This is the "wola wola" song I am hunting for! {see last week's Digest - ed}.

Unfortunately that is all they say on it... except that it was a big hit at the time (1984)...

Please help me find this song.

THE BATS LIVE IN AUSTRALIA
16th August

To begin my story, the Tri-Nations game between the Springboks and Wallabies has just finished here in Perth {21.11pm Australian time on the 18th August - ed}. I must admit that I am almost relieved it was a draw. After having lived over here for 20 years and being a citizen and all that, my loyalties usually lie with Aussie sporting teams, but I am never disappointed if the "old country" wins. There is a rugby club on the Swan River, south of Perth called Palmyra, which has been a venue for the Boks to practice whilst on tour. They usually organise some sort of entertainment for their supporters. This time they managed to coax The Bats and comedian Derek Gordon to fly to Perth and put on a few shows. I was fortunate (and clever) enough to purchase some tickets and attend their first show on Thursday night with a group of ex-South Africans.

At a rough guess, I would say there were close to 400 people there, which is good turnout for a Thursday night. The Castle Lager and boerewors rolls were flowing freely when we arrived. I ran into Eddie Eckstein and Paul Ditchfield after arriving and had a quick chat. Eddie is not a stranger to Australia - I met him in Sydney in 1982 when he was a temporary resident and did a few comedy shows and television commercials over there. He was telling me how time marches on and that most of them were in their 60s. The show started with Derek Gordon, and within minutes he had the whole room screaming with laughter. After establishing that about 90% of the crowd were indeed ex-South Africans, he proceeded to let rip with an assortment of jokes full of South African slang. Some Aussies in the audience seemed to laugh even louder than the Jaapies!

When The Bats took over the stage, they were just as warm and wonderful as I remember them over 20 years ago. The three original members were there, Eddie, Paul and Pete Clifford, but it was sad to see the absence of Barry Jarman, who passed away only six weeks ago. His replacement, Derek, (the baby of the band at age 52) was in true Bats tradition, a total clown and versatile multi-instrumental musician (or mental musician?). They mentioned on stage that Pete Clifford had been Dusty Springfield's guitarist before he emigrated to South Africa in 1964.

The songs were all there - All I Got, The Rock Machine, Groen en Goud, Weltevrede, Shabby Little Hut and many new ones about Hansie Cronjé and the state of the New South Africa. I was amazed at the stamina of these guys - they put on a long, long show which ended at almost midnight. They said they had broken up in 1982 so that means they haven't played together for almost 20 years! They still all handled their instruments with ease, and had a certain tightness that many young groups would be envious of. Eddie as usual, did his brilliant stand-up routines with his Japanese/ Indian/ Chinese/ African accents. I hope The Bats will come back again, even if we have to install wheelchair ramps for them.

A good night was had by all!!

E-mails in HTML format, or e-mails all in lower-case or all in CAPITALS will tend to be ignored as they can take too long to correct for inclusion in the Digest.
