OBITUARY: DAVID POLLECUTT 1942-2001

Dave Pollecutt passed away suddenly on Saturday 13th October after a spectacular career in SA Music. Born in Durban in 1942, Dave played guitar and recorded with Dickie Loader and the Blue Jeans and had several hits. He later established himself as a composer, arranger and music producer in Johannesburg. At the time of his death he was still playing gigs with Vinnie & The Viscounts.

Dave wrote many famous jingles that are still in use today, but he also wrote movie soundtracks such as "Shaka Zulu". His most recent work was "African Footprint". The show is still performing to capacity houses at the Globe Theatre at Gold Reef City.

Please let's not forget his important contribution to South African Music.

Ron "Bones" Brettell

... ’TIL THE NUDE GIRLS STOP SINGING

Let’s try and understand this. The Springbok Nude Girls finally confirm those "splitting" rumours a few weeks back with an official statement from manager Franie Kotze. The band, and record company Sony, announce the final Nude Girl concert dates on the ‘Fat Lady Sings’ tour, and the release of the band’s fifth album, a greatest hits compilation also titled ‘The Fat Lady Sings’ (including two new tracks - ‘J59’ and ‘Dimmer’). Despite this cross-branding, it is unusual that this CD does not appear at all during the weeks of the final dates.

On successive weekends, The Nude Girls play the Woodstock 3 Festival (announced as "Last Gauteng appearance"), the Three Arts in Cape Town (ditto "Last Ever SA Gig"), and finally, last Saturday night (13th Oct), the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London ("Last Ever Gig Anywhere!"), as detailed in those press releases.

Distraught and devoted fans pack the traditional Nude Girls’ swirling, manic moshpits, lighters and matches are lit and raised, fingertips are burnt, the upcoming ‘Greatest Hits’ track list is mostly covered in the set lists, there are screams, tears and farewells... and then they are gone. The greatest SA rock band of the ‘90’s. No more...

Until the following Tuesday that is, when a press release arrives announcing that the Nude Girls, Cutting Jade and Semisane have been added to the bill for the Edgars/5FM Birthday Bash happening a week from Saturday. Huh? That’s a big surprise you’ll agree. Luring the band out of retirement less then a week after their last goodbye. At least basketball legend, Michael Jordan, waited a few years before getting the urge to become un-invisible again, for the third time!

So how should all those Cape Town and London fans feel having been chizzed out of that "I was there" memories, glory and memorabilia? A spokesman from Sony explained that the band’s spot on the Birthday Bash bill had earlier been in doubt as some top international names were being approached. But when the concert organisers offered the belated headlining slot to the Nude Girls, it was felt it would be a good opportunity to promote the album, which should be appearing on shelves this week.

Whatever the given reasons, the Birthday Bash was at no stage mentioned as a possible date on the Fat Lady Sings Tour. The announcement that the band will now be headlining the event has murked up a dignified exit with mutterings of cynical marketing and cred-affecting indecision through the tempting lure of just one more big payday.

It is believed that the band, their record company, and many in SA music circles, are now questioning this decision to quit in the face of such clear and widespread support from both here and marginally abroad. The upcoming ‘Greatest Hits’ album has a truly great cover and a mighty collection of rock songs that leave no doubt that this band was (is?) something very special.

Nobody forced the Springbok Nude Girls to decide to break up and walk away, it was their decision. They could have announced an extended break and moved on down different roads with bridges still intact. Why get divorced when there’s still so much love?

So, that’s the current situation, with the Springbok Nude Girls Absolutely, Definitely, Last, Final, Farewell Concert Ever In The Universe "coming soon to a venue near you". (SS)

SEMISANE'S GOLDEN ‘LIFE’
http://www.semisane.com

It's just been confirmed that Cape Town's hottest pop rockers, Semisane, will be appearing at the Janine Big Brother SA Eviction Bash happening at Caesars Gauteng on Wednesday October 24. Then they're off to rock the Edgar's 5FM Birthday Bash in Centurion on Saturday October 28.

The band is still enjoying strong sales of their No.1 hit single, 'Life', which has just passed Gold sales status. Also watch out for Semisane's newly repackaged 'A Life Less Strange' hit-laden debut album which now includes the ‘Life’ single! In stores now, as they say! As if all this isn't enough, the band will be opening for Shaggy in Durban on Sunday October 28.

There’s also news on the way about the upcoming ‘Big Brother’ CD collection (featuring ‘Life’, natch) and some of the other music featured on the 24-hour reality-TV show, amongst which is a gratifyingly large representation of SA music. Thank You Big Brother!

KRAMER’S KAROO BLUES

It’s been almost five years since David Kramer graced a Cape Town stage, unless you count his recent live stint at the opening of the CD Wherehouse mega-store at the Waterfront. But David’s been off on his "Cooderesque" musical travels and has something new to show us. His latest venture is called ‘Karoo Kitaar Blues’ and features some of Kramer’s own material as well as introducing us to some fascinating but previously-obscure musicians who were recently unearthed by him while filming a documentary called ‘Langarm’ with director Jan Horn in the Karoo.

There’s the Mouwers family from Victoria West who play guitars and sing; Hannes Coetzee comes from Herbertsdale and plays slide guitar using a spoon clenched in his mouth, and Tokos Lodewyk hails from Richmond and plays the guitar and dances an alternative version of the "riel". David Kramer devised a production to showcase these unique, indigenous talents, and their performances at this year’s Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees attracted sell-out crowds and overwhelming acclaim.

The show also picked up the (prestigious?) De Kat Slurpie Award, convincing Kramer to bring it to The Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. ‘Karoo Kitaar Blues’ will run from Tuesday October 23rd to Saturday November 3rd.

GO GET SHAGGED

Following the recent postponement of Shaggy’s concerts in the UK, BIG CONCERTS are excited to announce, that not only is his South African tour going "full steam ahead", but he will be adding a performance in Durban as well. According to spokespeople, "Mr. Lover Lover" has had to delay his Irish performance until early next year due to "security reasons". He has however expressed his excitement to perform in South Africa.

The star of the number one hits "Angel" and "It wasn’t me" will be kicking off his SA tour in Durban at the ABSA Stadium, Outer fields on Sunday the 28th of October. He will then move on to Johannesburg for one show only at the Dome @ Northgate on Friday the 2nd of November, a special performance at the Kora Awards in Sun City, and finish off in Cape Town at the Bellville Velodrome on Sunday the 4th of November.

MUCH MORE PINK

Ex-Pink Floyd founder, Roger Waters, kicks off his 2002 World Tour in South Africa. On Thursday February 28 he plays his first gig of the new year at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town. He then moves to the MTN SunDome in Johannesburg on Saturday March 2nd. Roger always includes a number of old Floyd classics in his setlists so buy the recent 'Roger Waters In The Flesh' live CD (on SonyMusic SA) and get yourself ready for his visit.

Meanwhile on 6th November Pink Floyd releases a new 2CD compilation, 'Echoes - The Best Of Pink Floyd' (on the EMI label) including the previously unavailable on official CD 1982 single 'When The Tigers Broke Free'. This song appeared in the film 'The Wall' but not on the album.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

DIE HITS - PIET BOTHA
http://www.pietbotha.com

Piet recently signed to EMI SA and a compilation of his best loved hits has been released including 3 new tracks recorded in September this year. 'Verslag', with lyrics by Breyten Breytenbach, which was previously only available on the 'Om Te Breyten' CD has also been added as a bonus track. The 3 new songs 'Vandat Jy Weg Is', 'Slagtersnek' and 'Wind en Weer' are welcome additions to Piet's catalogue of songs about life, the ghosts that haunt us and South African history. Ron Brettell (ex-Circus & Hotline and more recently involved with the 'We Are The Stormers' song and 'African Footprint' stageshow) has added an extra dimension to Piet's songs with his Hammond organ sound.

All Piet's classics are here including: 'Sien Jou Weer', 'Blues Vir Louise', 'Donkermaan' and 'Laat Die Wiele Rol'. A sad omission, though, is the brilliant song about the border war 'Goeienag Generaal' but maybe the CD compilers felt this song was too harsh for inclusion and I would probably have to agree. Cover scan and full track and musician listings are on the official http://www.pietbotha.com website. (BC)

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

THE MANIC ADVENTURES OF THE MOOG AND THE MELLOTRON (PART 3)

Germany's Klaus Schulze forged a strong career in the seventies. Strongly influenced by Pink Floyd he would forward his career with the synthesiser, eventually winning the 1975 prestigious Grand Prix award with the classical synth album "Time Wind". Although Keith Emerson could largely be labelled as the king of the Moog synthesiser, the conservative circles of the continent will more fondly remember the searing synthesiser of Rick Wakeman on his classic epic "Journey to the centre of the earth". It was this 1974 recording with the London Symphony Orchestra that categorically immersed its influence upon
those that were distanced from the progressive rock revolution. A certain amount of praise should be given to Don van Vliet and his group Captain Beefheart. Their 1966 recording of "Electricity" ventures into the Theremin synthesiser. This style of Theremin ambience is strongly embraced by Brian Wilson on his "Pet Sounds" album and Gary Usher on the album "Misty Mirage" by Curt Boettcher.

In the Netherlands keyboard maestro Rick van der Linden would release his classic concept album " Birds" featuring the 400D mellotron and A.R.P. 2600 synthesiser. Rick would enhance the recordings of J.S. Bach, maintaining the purity of the harpsichord with superb overlay of acoustic and electric violin by Darryl Way. The entirety of the progressive rock explosion had much and everything to do with the minimalist influence of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. The spawn of this influence could be found with the electrifying barrage of German progressive group Can or the tender Nieu. A spate of soundtracks emerged in the seventies through the ambient genius of Fricke and Fichelscher with the group Popol Vuh. Often embellished with Indian Sitar the group could forge rhythms that would hypnotically challenge the senses. Sadly this very characteristic would often create a monotonous and boring epitaph.

Today we find a yin yang in the progressive rock revolution of the millennium. One part a loyal and dedicated group of musicians that would further exploit the mellotron and Moog through talented expertise, while the other side gyrates with the hedonistic pulse of computerised rhythms that create ad nauseas and antiseptic disorder, signifying an apocalyptic end to the state of music as we know it.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

BEST OF A DECADE - BIG SKY (Sony Music)
http://www.stevelouw.com

I have heard that Japan does not permit masters of certain crafts to leave the country for fear of losing them. The fact that Steve travels to the States and NYC in no way diminishes how I think of him as a rock master. Y'all won't lose him, though, because his heart is in South Africa.

There is no posturing, no rear-wagging and tongue-unfurling here, only
unabashed good-feeling rock, heavy on melody; rock resonant with a clear and sharp electric guitar and strong drums.

This is mature rock, not rebel-without-a-clue anger-for-the-sake of-anger rock. So if you think Huck Phlegm and the Pissed-Off Kids is gobs of fun, this might well not be a CD for you.

However, if you have a couple of kids whom you adore, one with blue eyes, a forever love of your life (and a long-ago girlfriend named Kathleen), and a passion for melodic rock played with masterful finesse, then this is a CD to spin for the fun of it.

The closest Steve Louw gets to anger is a slow burn at best on the tune 'Mr. Green', where he laments our loss of inner-strength and its replacement by materialism.

Mostly he sings of people-things: relationships and love, side trips into disappointments, feeling wasted, and diamonds and dirt. All sung with open sincerity, all cleanly played on the electric guitar, without forgetting the pounding drums -- both really are nicely favored in the mix.

Not to diminish this CD's rock value, but it can be played softly for
melodic rock background, or it can be cranked up to dominate the room and keep a small party chugging along. It can even make work pleasant. 'Best of the Decade' is not laid back -- don't think that -- but it does have a casual insouciance, an inspiring lift, that talks to you if you're at a certain responsible age of life.

See I sometimes think that female singers sing to me, and male singers sing for me. In this greatest hits CD, Steve seems to be coming from a place and time in his life where he sings for me, expressing in song what I haven't the musical skill to sing and play, though I have the life to feel.

I enjoy the rolling beauty and almost plaintive feel of Steve Louw's music. He's a masterful guitarist and assembles a great band -- not to mention having a friend like Kevin Shirley produce a number of the tracks for him in New York City.

To use a rock cliché in describing a work that is not clichéd, but rather is personal and musical: this CD has some infectious songs. I defy even the most hardened distortion lover from tapping along to songs like 'Blue Eyes', 'Run to Me', and 'Strange Room'.

If you enjoy the sort of work work I've described, and can't sustain anger and screaming for 56 minutes, you might could, as we say in Texas, check out Steve Louw and Big Sky's international rock with its heart in South Africa.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

HERE COMES THE ROT - éVOID (WEA 1986, re-issued on CD in September 2001 by RetroFresh)
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/evoid

The first ever album I reviewed for the SA Rock Digest was 'Here Comes the Rot' by éVoid way back in May 2000 and it ran like this:

After the runaway sucess of their debut album 'éVoid', the Windrich
brothers left SA for London and began work on 'Here comes the Rot'. This album starts where they left off with 'Dance the Instinct' which has a similar sound & feel to 'Shadows', but you soon realise that this is a more mature sound, musically & lyrically.

The album also benefits from a tighter production, but does not lose the essence of éVoid. 'Altar Pop' is a thrashy, punky number that ends the first, up beat side. The b-side is more melancholic and finds the
Windrich's in a more reflective mood. 'Shuffle in the Dust' is a gem of a song. Think 'Taximan' played in a minor chord and at half the speed.
An instrumental track 'Winter' is a sad sounding piece of music that leads into the closing track 'Here Comes The Rain'. Listened to back to back, this is definitely the superior of éVoid's albums. It may not have the catchy singles of their debut, but is a more coherent work.

Get your hands on a copy if you can.

Well now you can get your hands on this classic along with some previously unreleased tracks, thanks to Benjy Mudie from Retro Fresh. Despite Benjy disagreeing with my verdict on the production and I suspect he also disagrees with my conclusion on which is the superior album, I stand by what I've said. I think though that whatever one thinks about which is the better album, 'éVoid' or 'Rot', few would disagree that as both albums bear the name éVoid they stand for South African pop of the highest order.

Apart for the great album that 'Rot' is, it's worth owning the re-release purely for the bonus tracks. 'Kwela Walk' remains my favourite éVoid song and it's great to upgrade from my scratchy old 12" single to CD remastered quality. 'Shoes' is another of my favourites and along with 'Kwela Walk' are closer to the sound of the first album than the rest of 'Rot'.

Once again Retro Fresh have come up trumps, allowing those who missed out the first time an opportunity to hear this classic, while allowing those who have owned and lost, or owed and treasured to replace in style.

It took only two weeks for Charisma to leap to the top of the charts, a quite remarkable feat. It would also be a good while before it was dislodged from the number 1 spot.

With Delaney & Bonnie's 'Never Ending Song of Love' entering the top 10, there was the unique situation of 2 different versions of the same song being in the top 10 - the New Seekers' version was at number 2. Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett were a husband and wife duo.

Also new to the top 10 was Frenchman Danyel Gerard with 'Butterfly' while Creedence Clearwater Revival and SA's Hedgehoppers dropped out of the top 10.

Other than Charisma, the other big mover of the week was Cymarron who jumped five places from 18 to 13.

5.RUK EN ROL MUSIEK

BEESKRAAL
http://www.beeskraal.co.za

SHARON CLIFTON AT DINO'S, TABLE VIEW

Friday night (19th October) I found myself at Dino's in Table View. Dino's is a wonderfully festive and friendly place, but the real treat on Friday was rocking to the guitar sounds of Sharon Clifton. A one-(wo)man band, Sharon strapped on her black Fender guitar, stepped up to the mike and let rip with a selection of songs from the history of rock. Songs like 'Radar Love', 'Cocaine', 'Smoke On The Water' and Santana's 'Smooth' were handled superbly and intermixed with some newer pop hits like Anastacia's 'I'm Outta Love'. A number of people were up and dancing whilst others just sat and watched as she coaxed some amazing sounds out of her guitar. A highlight was her interpretation of Gary Moore's 'Parisienne Walkways'. Thanks for a great evening, Sharon.

JACK HAMMER AT HURDY GURDY'S, JEFFREYS BAY
28 September

"Hurdy Gurdy stands for breaking the silence with a song", reads the poster on the wall. Hurdy Gurdy's in J'bay had its silence broken on Friday night the 28th of September when Jack Hammer strolled onto its limpid stage for a night of acoustic rock.

Due to good weather, friendly townspeople and an eagerly watched Currie Cup rugby match that just had to be finished first, the gig started a bit late, but who's watching the watch anyhow on a good day at Jeffreys Bay.

Jack Hammer refers to a number of entities; Piet Botha, at times, is referred to as "The Hammer". Add guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Martin, bassist Tertius du Plessis and drummer Paul v/d Waal with Fenders and Gibsons plugged into big Marshall amplifiers then Jack Hammer transforms into a pile-driving band with a beautiful full-bodied rock sound. Jack Hammer also refers to Piet Botha and Jonathan Martin performing as a duo {sometimes known as "Piet & The Kid - ed}. Acoustic guitars donned (with the occasional harmonica and keyboard), bar stools drawn closer and licks, lyrics and riffs traded on road tested songs. This was the entity that offered entertainment at Hurdy Gurdy's that night. Two guitarists/singers/songwriters acting in unison to improvise on the rock'n'roll slogan of stage lights and late nights.

Hurdy Gurdy's is a smallish venue - its prominent feature is a bar with a wide counter and a well lit service area to facilitate drinking, and a big drawing of a young and a smiling Mick Jagger that serves as a backdrop for the stage. To the approving gaze of Jumpin' Jack Flash, a bearded Piet Botha, clad in a Oppikoppi long sleeve, and Jonathan Martin with a white-on-black Jim Beam blazed across the front of his T-shirt sauntered on stage to start off the music with "Staan Saam Burgers". Their regular opener (acoustic or electric) it featured an innovative opening riff and a gentle call-up to the "volk" to gather around to rock in union. The song demonstrated the association between music and history, that the one feeds on the other, with its references to the Anglo-Boer War.

"Liberty" followed. This is Jonathan Martin's coup de grace. Great melody, great guitar work, great vocals. Lyric-wise: - after several readings I still haven't figured out why Kaelin didn't survive the wild. "Sien Jou Weer" and "Suitcase Vol Winter" had the Rolling Stones blues "Love in Vain" {a Robert Johnson composition - ed} sandwiched between them. "Suitcase Vol Winter", the title track of Piet Botha's first Afrikaans album, bared the raw nerves of a season of melancholy, hard luck and painful memories. "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" is a seldom heard Robert Johnson tune dusted off and polished by Jack Hammer. Martin on vocals sounded every bit like the blues belter he aspires to be. The first session played out with a cover of Guns and Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine", with an interplay with Martin on guitar and Botha on keyboard.

The second session found a dour-looking cat called Mervin, with a troubleshooting Ovation guitar, seated between Martin and Botha, contributing licks and riffs when his guitar would allow it. "Pick-up trouble" was mooted by those in the know. Apparently a celebrated banjo player from Bloemfontein, Mervin and his erratic guitar did not distract from great versions of great songs.

"Blues vir Louise" segued into a harrowing adaption of the Rolling Stones' "Dead Flowers". "Goeienag Generaal" was met by the usual chorus of cheers. Arguably the most popular Piet Botha song, it's a song with a meaning - meaning a lot to a generation who unwillingly, unwittingly took up arms in a war orchestrated by ideologists and securocrats burrowed in Pretoria offices. Botha's harmonica on this song sounded as if he tried to blow away all the agonies and barricades of the Angolan bush war put up in the minds of ex-conscripts and border fighters.

"Russian and Chips" a.k.a. "The Kid He came from Nazareth", an old Freedom's Children tune featured some intricate guitar work from the duelling fretboard brothers. "Billy", a Bob Dylan song from the film "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" retained its outlaw flavor envisaged by the composer. A change to the original lyric featured an innovative "Dylan... they don't want you to be so free". "Tangerine", an old Led Zep tune and "Crossroad Blues" {Another Robert Johnson song, made popular by Cream - ed} saw the sending off of Mervin - three guitars trading lead and rhythm to fair effect.

After a short break for refreshments Botha and Martin were back on stage with a dreamy lullaby. "Northern Sky" with Martin on vocals got the third session going. A moving folk song, it was, along with "Liberty", Martin's finest performance of the night. "Boomstraat", an ode to smokers of a special weed, was funny and evoked also a few grins from the more dignified portion of the audience. Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and "April" set the mood for the final stretch of songs.

"Laat die Wiele Rol", a chronicle of life on the road, set up cheers for mentioning Jeffreys Bay. "Runaway Train" had Botha again doing great things on harmonica, blowing life into an otherwise dull song.
Ideally a cover version should add originality or new insight into a song. "All Along the Watchtower" is covered by more artists than rock and folk encyclopedias can list. With alternate vocals and tasty acoustic guitar Jack Hammer brought new dimensions to this well weathered song. Dylan is after all free - free to alter and adapt. A return of "Sweet Child o' Mine" brought the evening's music to a rolling close.

So what's the meaning of taking pains to go watch Jack Hammer and then to write about it? Entertainment? Sure won't get better music this side of the equator. But it goes deeper. Jack Hammer has a cool that stems from delving into the rich musical movements of blues, folk and country rock and then infuse their music with an own individuality, producing songs that remains true to the spirit of these movements. Piet Botha and Jonathan Martin were worthy of breaking Hurdy Gurdy's silence with their songs the night of 28 September.
