WONDERBOOM REWIND - BIG TIME

On their exciting new multimedia enhanced CD 'REWIND', top SA band Wonderboom pay tribute to classic South African songs and, along the way, re-invent Rock ‘n Roll... African Style.

Check this out:
CHARLIE (ain’t slavin’ 2 da habit) - ina RocKwaito Style!
Way back to the 70’s when Trevor, Duncan, Ronnie and Neil were Rabbitt and Charlie didn’t surf.

SHADOWS 2001 - ina New Millenium Rock Style!
Wonderboom drummer Danny played for éVoid when he was at school (in grade two) ...the band had no choice!

KISS OR KILL - ina Funky Indie Ballad Style!
B World wrote this great song in the mid nineties and taught Wonderboom members Cito, Martin and Wade the difference between decent and decadent on their first tour.

AFRICA - ina Glamafrican Stompin’ Style!
As exiles who stayed to face the music, Wonderboom feel no true SA tribute would be complete without a Johnny Clegg contribution - their favourite Juluka song.

JOHNNY CALLS THE CHEMIST - ina Rock/Mbaqanga style!
In the early eighties, Cape Town mullets Falling Mirror started dialing ... Wonderboom answered from a pay phone in Soweto!

SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN - ina Folk You Rockin’ Style!
This South African Nashville classic has been performed in places like Bapsfontein, Roodepoort, and Welkom for decades but was left up to Wonderboom to immortalise ‘vir Volk en Vaderland!’

"Charlie (ain’t slavin’ 2 da habit)" is already receiving max cross-over airtime on National, Campus and Regional stations and with Wonderboom - SA’s most kickass live band - performing at concerts like the 5FM Birthday Bash and then embarking on a major National Tour over the festive season, follow up singles 'Africa' and 'Shadows 2001' (which features a second time on REWIND as a Barney Simon remix bonus track) are sure to dominate the South African airwaves well into 2002.

DAVE MATTHEWS NEWS

Superstar RCA Records act, the Dave Matthews Band, has cancelled a
number of international tour dates, deciding instead, as the band's
official website puts it, to stay close to family and friends "in light
of recent global events".

The group finished a huge four-month US tour in August and was
scheduled to play November 6 in Mexico City before heading overseas for
shows in the U.K. and Germany. A spokesperson for the band said that the group hasn't decided yet whether to reschedule the dates but that the band will definitely resume touring before the end of the year and
continue through the beginning of 2002.

In September the band pulled 'When The World Ends' as the next radio
single from their 'Everyday' album, deciding that it wasn't appropriate
in light of the recent US terror attacks {I’ll say - ed}. They
encouraged radio stations to instead play the title track ‘Everyday’, a
song featuring backing vocals by our own leading BMG Africa signed
singer/songwriter Vusi Mahlasela.

This week in the US, the Dave Matthews Band released 'Live in Chicago:
12-19-98 at the United Center', the group's third live album on RCA.

ROCK BAND GLAZE READY TO BLAST OFF!

Glaze; born out of rock band Simpliciti is proud to announce the launch of the band with a fresh sound and line-up at The Bohemian, 5 Park Rd. Melville on 17 November 2001. Glaze was formed after the key members of Simpliciti; JB, Fish and St. J. lost their dream and found it again... "The new material, combined with a new name, image and show is bound to lift the audience off their chairs" says St. J., guitarist and spokesman for Glaze.

These changes were however very necessary. After much soul searching it was decided by the members of Simpliciti to find a new drummer for the line-up. A drummer was found in TC (ex-drummer for Leery), who fitted the profile perfectly. He brings a fresh sound and rhythm to the band. New members also generally bring changes to the bands’ sound and feel so without further ado it was decided upon to change the name of the band and Glaze was born. The material is essentially hard rock with some blues and subtle gothic influences.

Back to rehearsal and song-writing the lads went, and a couple of months later, the band is finally ready to showcase their stuff. The Glaze line-up, who as individual musicians are all well accomplished, but as a unit explosive, comprises JB: Vocals/ Guitar, Fish: Bass guitar, St. J.: Lead guitar and TC: Drums and percussion.

Glaze plan to gig extensively wherever they can in order to promote the band and thus also to broaden the following they already have. Following that to be in the studio by around May 2002 to record a full length CD.

"To the Management of The Bohemian, Powerzone for web advertising, everyone else who made the launch possible and to our fans a big thank you!" says St. J.

As a final comment he added: "See you at The Bohemian on the 17 November!"

THE CUCKOOS NEST FALLS SILENT

The original hippy, Ken Kesey, has died in Eugene, Oregon, aged 66.
Kesey, who wrote ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest’ and ‘Sometimes A
Great Notion’, was a major figure in those heady mid-60’s as he and the
Merry Pranksters travelled around California in a psychedelic painted
bus (with "Furthur" emblazoned on the front) spreading LSD, appropriate
music and good vibes around the area, inspiring Tom Wolfe’s 1968 book,
‘The Electric Kool Aid Acid Test’, and the Beatles road movie, ‘Magical
Mystery Tour’.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

8 DAYS - THE LED (Rhythm Records)
http://www.theled.co.za

Despite their name this is not "heavy" music at all, in fact its much closer in flavour to the Cranberries. Skye Stevenson's haunting and angelic voice is uplifting and emotional on the 12 tracks on this, the Led's first full-length album. Most of the songs are quietly atmospheric with some deviations into harder areas like with 'Bring It On Back'. This CD just gets better and better with each repeated listening.

The production team at Sunset Recording Studios have done themselves proud once again. Album of the year? Maybe. A contender? Definitely. Beat the rush and buy it now. (BC)

---------------

STORME WARNING

After impressing a lot of people as the dynamic singer for
corporate/function band Havana Gas (yeah, I know it’s a terrible pun,
but it’s an accurate name for a great party band), Storme has just
released her debut album called, um, ‘Storme’. The songs were written
with guitarist Doug Campbell and produced by Brian O’Shea. The musicians called into duty include Concord Nkabinde (bass), Barry van Zyl (drums), Wessel van Rensberg (piano), and Efrain Toro (percussion).

‘Storme’ is a mature, solid pop album not really aimed at the
Britney-pack, although Storme knows how to rock any crowd. The first
single release, ‘Make Love Just To Me’, illustrates Storme’s ease at
handling an emotional rock song. There are plenty of other fresh and
sparkling pop contenders on ‘Storme’, like the contemporary R&B groove
track ‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ (co-written with O’Shea), the poignant
‘Children Of Africa’, and the funky dance suss of ‘Cookie In The
Kitchen’, ‘I Lost The Pieces’, and the autobiographical ‘My Name Is
Storme’.

The album manages to capture some of the "electricity" that usually
accompanies Storme’s live performances, and kudos to her for putting out her own original material, when she could have just as easily included some of her well-known cover versions. (SS)

------------------

JUST JINGER - GREATEST HITS

"Isn’t it ironic?" as Alanis would quickly point out, that this first
greatest hits compilation from the other big SA band of the past 10
years arrives in the same week as that of their now extinct compadres.
The Nude Girls left their ‘Greatest Hits’ collection as a farewell note
to their grieving fans while Art (Stanley?) Matthews and his band issue
theirs as a mid-career hiatus before moving on to new challenges, still
convinced that their time in the international spotlight is coming. But
Art’s never been short of confidence, and neither has BMG SA, his
faithful record company, who still have no doubt that Just Jinger are a
sure (if belated) thing.

And you cannot but share their devotion when listening to these songs.
Throughout the band’s career there have always been those on the
sidelines with quizzical sneers on their faces and "Ja, but they sound
like..." comparisons on their lips. But if we look at the phenomenal (by SA standards) sales of all the Just Jinger albums and EPs (and live
video), and the fanatical support at all and any live performances by
the band, it’s obvious those detractors are well in the minority.

So here we have all those favourites lined up to be sung along to, cried to, reminisced to and danced to. There’s ‘Father And Farther’, 'Silent Water’, ‘Your Song’, ‘Those Days’, new single ‘Home’, and their timeous and respectful version of Rodriguez’ ‘Sugar Man’.

The band’s line-up has changed dramatically over the years, but through
it all, Art Matthews has remained in front, writing and performing the
songs he knows will take him to where he clearly feels he deserves to
be. You need his drive and self-confidence in this business, but when
it’s allied to a talent as sharp as his, results will definitely follow.

Just Jinger conquered SA with a string of top songs and an abundance of
concerts. That formula may not have worked as well in London, where the
band has been running down a 2-year work permit with limited success.
But Art has his eye on Bush-land and this compilation gives us all a
chance to reassess Just Jinger's work to date and their chances of
international success. Looking forward to Volume 2. (SS)

Tracklisting: ‘Shallow Waters’, ‘Sugar Man’, ‘Father And Farther’, ‘No
God?’, ‘Stand In Your Way’, ‘Like You Madly’, ‘Your Song’, ‘Painting
Hours’, ‘Her Story’, ‘Paradise In Summertime’, ‘Too Late’, ‘Perfect
Ground’, ‘For All We Know’, ‘Those Days’, ‘Here’s To You’, ‘She Knows’,
‘Remember Me’, ‘Home’.

TWO NEW SMOKIN’ RELEASES FROM AFRICAN DOPE

AFRICAN DOPE VOL 1 - VARIOUS ARTISTS

After building a huge reputation on the back of some of the most
intriguing indie SA music releases for ages, the Cape Town label,
African Dope, finally received some justified major assistance with the
release of a compilation of their catalogue on the Sony Music SA label.
The album is the result of a strategic alliance between Sony Music and
African Dope Records, focused at bringing attention (within the SA
market and abroad) to youth-focused, truly and fully integrated African
Music. This is a huge vote of confidence in cutting edge, new SA music
by a major label, and much credit here is due to Sony’s man in Cape
Town, Richard Bruyns, who has been a large catalyst in this exciting
release.

This new compilation, and a long and eagerly anticipated new album from
the Kalahari Surfers, was the focus of a huge launch party held at the
Culemborg Centre on the Foreshore on Saturday night. The featured
artists, a range of DJs, belly dancers, video projections and lots of
African dope welcomed these two new releases into the world in true Cape Town style.

'African Dope Vol 1' is a definitive collection of well-produced South
African hip-hop, dub, jazz, breakbeat, and trip hop tracks in the
tradition of the great 'chill' & 'phat beat' compilations of the past 10 years. This collection holds a unique edge over its international
competitors, as it incorporates African sounds, samples and solos that
could only have originated in the dope-wafted ghettos of South Africa,
proudly showcasing/translating exactly what African chill culture means
in an international language, understandable way beyond our borders.

'African Dope Vol 1' features original tracks, remixes and fresh nu
blunts from Moodphase5ive, GhettoMuffin, Kalahari Surfers, Felix Laband, Anti-Hero, Ernie, Craig Damster as well as remixes by Mime, Toine, Syllabic, Farmer Brian and DJ Dope. Mixed and mastered
by Krushed & Sorted.

(released 13 November on Sony SA's 'Epic' label)

KALAHARI SURFERS - AKASIC RECORD (ADOPECD004)

African Dope records is also proud to announce the release of the first
album in over a decade by the Kalahari Surfers, South Africa's original
electronic music manipulation pioneers, featuring the work of SA music
legend Warrick Sony.

'Akasic Record' is a genre-defying trip through modern African, Asian
and electronic musical landscapes, a seamless story of organic and
manipulated sounds from the world around us.

(released 12 November)
http://www.africandope.co.za/kalaharisurfers

------------------

LANGPAD - GEORGIA (Rock Till You Drop Promotions)

An interesting new album comprising of mainly Afrikaans songs and ballads as well as a few English tracks from the talented brothers Andries and Philip Botha {the guys from David's Confession? - ed} that make up Georgia. The production is surprisingly good, and the music even better, although mainly for a more mature folk/rock Afrikaans audience. The songs are well written and arranged and the album is a pleasurable listening experience.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

OUT OF THE FLAMES AND INTO THE SURF

Dressed in white like a Chinese envoy the Flames put South African soul on the map. Few would forget the pure soprano of Blondie Chaplin as he penetrated the misty moisty heights with the classic "For your precious love". Sadly these talented brothers of the sugarcane fields struggled to find the open acceptance that they rightfully deserved during a time when marshal law governed. The final fate of these soul brothers is wrapped in a mysterious enigma of fame and fortune. Snippets of editorial that occasionally mention their brief excursion with the Beach Boys and to some degree with the Rolling Stones have never quite painted a clear picture for those that dearly loved the Fataar family. We now draw back the curtain and gaze into what really happened.

It was a sad time in 1972 when Bruce Johnston decided to leave the Beach Boys on a tense note. To further add to the sad state of affairs, Brian Wilson had become more distant from those close to him and the years of chemical abuse were finally starting to disorientate this talented brother. Carl, Al and Mike were holding the group together, but a definite influx of raw energy was needed. It was at that stage, at the close of 1971, that Carl introduced Blondie Chaplin and drummer Ricky Fataar to the group. It is of interest to note that Ricky assisted Daryl Dragon on the 1972 release "Surf's up", an album which has been likened onto the genius of "Pet Sounds". Both of them were familiar with the Californian sound and Carl felt the group could play a harder rock with assistance of these two ex-Flames. The harmony thing was still vital, but became secondary to the seventies energy. Brian was still writing for the group and Dennis was into orchestration and classical influence. Their first touring schedule was England in the first half of 1972. Ricky and Blondie brought the vitality of rock & roll back into the Beach Boys repertoire.

The Beach Boys were on the brink of a change and it was at this time that they leaned on Ricky and Blondie's skill to compose for the group. The first Fataar-Chaplin composition was the funky "Here she comes" which moved closer to a Steely Dan style of rock. A far more favourable composition "Hold on dear brother" with some magnificent steel guitar by Carl, caught the Beach Boy style appropriately. The most outstanding tune to emanate from this new found association, was the magnificent "Sail on sailor". With Blondie Chaplin on the lead vocal, Van Dyke Parks on keyboard and the assistance of Tandyn Almer (from the group Association), this was to stand out as the finest contribution by the Flames in touch with Beach Boy harmony. At this stage tension between manager Jack Rieley and the group resulted in Jack being fired and replaced by Steve Love, brother of Mike. The initial departure of Bruce Johnston had much to do with his prophetic perception of Jack Rieley.
By the end of 1974 Blondie and Ricky had left the group. Ironically at this stage another ex-Beach Boy, Glen Campbell had made his fortune in country and western music. Daryl Dragon, better known as the Captain from popsters "the Captain and Tennille" (with Toni Tennille) released their first major single, "Love will keep us together". Bruce Johnston penned "I write the songs" that would take Barry Manilow to the top of the charts.

The family was coming together and Dennis re-joined the band as a working drummer. Ricky and Blondie leave us with a legacy of three albums, "In concert", "Holland" and "Carl and the passions, so tough". Ricky Fataar would again return in 1977 to assist Dennis Wilson on his solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue". He would be joined by the notorious Hal Blaine who featured on the classic "Pet Sounds" album. This particular session was during a time when Ricky found more fame and maybe less fortune with a bandit Beatle group called the Rutles. The Rutles had a weekend television show which included the likes of ex-Bonzo Dog Band and Monty Python Eric Idle, assistance from Neil Innes and the remarkable maestro guitarist Ollie Halsall. Although Blondie Chaplin has been seen jamming with a number of show bands, one being the Rolling Stones it would be more accurate to state that they were once very much part of the living energy of the Beach Boys in composition and display.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

WICKED WONDER - ARAPAHO

I'm always searching for rock kicks and Arapaho's buzz saw guitar-rock
satisfies. 'Wicked Wonder' has what a hard rock album needs: wild and
upfront guitars, solid drums, interesting lyrics, and a lead singer who
sounds like a man, not like a screeching harpy. This wickedly delightful album satisfies my rock cravings.

'Wicked Wonder' has the plus of a hotshot producer. David Birch, of Squeal fame, co-produced this CD with the band, a quartet. I'm a big Squeal fan and know that Birch knows rock.

Arapaho's single, 'Wild Warrior', is a timeless hard rock number. Up tempo with straight-ahead drums, it was driven into the consciousness of many South Africans by its appearance on the worthy rock comp, 'My Generation' released in 1996.

One of the standout songs is 'Silver', a steadily cranking rock tune. Another great track is 'Arapaho', concerning the Arapaho's (the American Indian tribe) contact with white men. It's a big-guitar number about American aboriginal issues in particular, perhaps akin to Midnight Oil's activism in general.

Other tunes in Arapaho's distinctive big rock style are: 'Julius', an urgent number; 'Pure', driving road rock; and 'Can You See Me', a concise and well-done Hendrix cover, Arapaho-style.

'Innocent Child' is a well-wrought song with an Important Message (it's agin child abuse), but goes on at length and becomes preachy.

In sum, 'Wicked Wonder' by Arapaho is a well-rounded rock work that opens with a strummed electric guitar, closes with an instrumental, and blasts out plenty of hard rock in between. 'Wicked Wonder' is real rock for real people.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR - DICKIE LOADER (1970)

Can you image Dickie Loader without his Blue Jeans? Well maybe it's not a picture you want to conjure up in your mind, but don't worry, I'm talking aurally. It's business as usual as the album starts off with 'Poor Little Rich Girl' sounding like a normal sixties bright and breezy pop song with it's dom-dom dom-dom 2 time bass. Pleasant. 'Julie', track 2 is more of the same. Ah yes, this is going to be a nice album of good old 60's pop.

Track 3, called 'The End'. Hang on, what's going on here. There's a raunchy rock guitar, and some neat organ sounds. Sounds a bit like Freedom's Children broke into the studio and hi-jacked the band. Closer inspection of the sleeve notes reveals that Freedom's Children did indeed play on 3 tracks on the album, the other 2 featuring the talents of South Africa's foremost prog rock groups are 'The Eagle has Landed' and 'Sing a Simple Song'.

This does not phase Dickie in any way. His voice gets a real edge to it and he knows how to rock. In fact so impressed is he with his new found rock friends that he even manages to produce a couple of rockers without the aid of the Children. These being 'Heya' and 'The Wind Keeps Howling'.

So you've got half an album of 60's pop with some of the tunes sounding
familiar. There's hints of the Beatles 'Ob la di ob la da' on some tracks and one has to wonder if Julian Lennon listened to 'Girl Woman' before writing 'Saltwater' as the tune is uncannily similar. Then you have 5 tracks of blistering rock, including the tribute to landing a man on the moon, 'The Eagle has Landed' which pre-dates Bowie's "ground control to Major Tom" with the very similar "ground control to mission".

It's had to imagine that Dickie Loader (Blue Jeans or not) greats like Bowie and sons of greats like Lennon Jnr, but give it a listen and make up your own mind.

2 [2] Butterfly - Danyel Gerard
3 [4] Never Ending Song Of Love - New Seekers
4 [3] You - Peter Maffay
5 [8] Get Me Some Help - Neville Whitmill*

8 [7] Co Co - The Sweet
9 [11] What You Doing Sunday - Dawn
10 [-] Amen - Peanut Butter Conspiracy*

* South African Artists

Week 4 at number 1 for Charisma and still going strong. Danyel Gerrard's 'Butterfly' seemed to be a minor irritation to 'Mammy Blue' rather than a serious challenge.

On the local front Neville Whitmill continued his upward momentum, climbing 3 to 5, Barbara Ray remained steady in the 6th spot, Groep Twee dropped a couple of places, but the Peanut Butter Conspiracy had the last word, coming from nowhere to 10 with 'Amen'.

Also new to the top 10 was Dawn's 'What you doing Sunday', while Lee
Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra (Frank's daughter) teamed up to propel 'Did you Ever' into the top 20.

Creedence Clearwater Revival's 'Sweet Hitch Hiker' exited the top 20. Since the start of 1969, Creedence had had 9 hits, 3 number 1's and spent 100 weeks on the top 20, a quite formidable record. At this stage the artists with the second highest number of weeks on the charts was the Archies with 72 weeks (and only 1 number 1).

South Africans at number 1 this week:

Mammy Blue - Charisma (1971)

ALL THE COLD FACTS ABOUT RODRIGUEZ
http://www.sarockdigest.com/rodriguez

The SA Rock Digest recently made contact with Mike Theodore, the producer of the classic 'Cold Fact' album. We were given Mike's details by Gary Harvey, co-composer with Mike and Dennis Coffey of 2 tracks on 'Cold Fact'. Gary Harvey contacted us through his son, Darin, because the now-defunct SA melodic-grunge rock band Black Eyed Susan (not be confused with the Australian band The Black Eyed Susans) had covered 'Hate Street Dialogue' on their 1998 album 'Back-Stabbers And Money Grabbers' and Gary had received a royalty cheque. Talk about "taking the long way round"!

Anyway we asked Mike what he was up to nowadays and here is his reply:
"I am still in the music business. I have a studio in New York and in my home. I have been trying to get another recording out of Rodriguez. I have spent 3 to 4 years trying but I am afraid that it will not happen. Lots of partial songs, nothing complete. I guess he does not really want to do another recording with new material. I just came back from Detroit and I completed a project with a 25 year old artist named Jonah. Hopefully you will be hearing him soon. It is so strange because I used Dennis Coffey and Bob Babbitt and some of the other musicians from the Rodriguez projects. In fact the band was to be with Rodriguez but he decided not to record so I did another artist and it is great."

CORNELL DUPREE

In 1965 Jimi Hendrix did a series of sessions with Curtis Knight and the Squires. On lead guitar Cornell Dupree featured with the King Curtis Combo. Could someone please inform me if Cornell Dupree was the fellow guitarist that crossed the waters with Cape Town-born Eddie Kramer in the early sixties?

I heard Not The Midnight Mass sing James Phillips' "Light me a light" at On Broadway the other night (it was breathtaking), and was wondering
whether the lyrics are available anywhere on the web. I'd like to find all the lyrics to James's songs if possible.

Maybe you can help.

ANTON GOOSEN
http://www.antongoosen.co.za

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------

terdeë geniet is.

MICHAEL TOYE AND FRIENDS PRESENT ‘THE WORD CIRCUS’
A unique musical experience at a unique venue

The Centre for the Book, the Old Archive Building in Queen Victoria
Street (where Hansie met the judge), is the venue for the three-night
run of ‘The Word Circus’ in mid November. A mixture of performance art, traditional Celtic and South African Music mixed with original text, the show is appropriately called a Circus. The domed building replaces the Big Top, as the audience is guided through a range of scenes, emotions and situations in the course of one evening. These talented musicians, from diverse disciplines and origins, will present a show consisting of poetry, recitation to original music, traditional songs and ballads - (both a Capella and to musical accompaniment), solo pieces - both traditional and contemporary, and then the craziness - juggling or possibly magic. One never knows exactly what to expect at a Circus, but it’s always entertaining.

Michael Toye, the co-ordinator of The Word Circus, is from Glasgow, and
has worked in both Scotland and Ireland as a professional musician in
the early 80’s. He has spent the past 12 years in Southern Africa,
living as a musician in Zimbabwe for 6 years, recording, composing,
teaching and performing. He has been captured by the fusion of
traditional African and Celtic Music, and the weaving together of music, sounds and text. He has performed in Maputo and Johannesburg, and has cut a CD of his poetry and music. He is currently studying Jazz
Arrangement and Composition at UCT. As the choreographer of the Circus,
as well as a performer, by using voice, guitar, text and percussion Toye facilitates and enhances the synergies of the musical and literary
talents of a diverse blend of his fellow performers.

The "Friends" are:
Michael Cope - with original verse and text. Well known as a jeweller
and designer, he has had both his poetry and a novel published, and has
performed in shows mixing original poetry and Jazz.
Jason Cope - accomplished magician, stand-up comic and street-performer, on stage with his father, almost for the first time. Not his first performance at a circus.
Norman Skillen - using voice and whistle, is from Belfast, and has been
playing and singing traditional Irish music for over 30 years, and given concerts in Ireland, Germany and England. He is also an actor/speaker, having performed in Europe with the Moving Word Theatre.
Clare Hewitt - on cello, was a child prodigy, playing piano at age 5,
and the cello at 9. A published poet, she has performed music with text
at many local venues.
Steven Ellis - on drums and percussion, another B.Mus, who grew up in
Holland and England, is well known as the leader of the popular Jazz
Assassins and also as a poet.
Ivan Mozuze - from Maputo, on soprano and alto-saxophone. He had watched Michael Toye perform in Mozambique, and this inspired him to become a musician. He is a regional winner in the "Old Mutual Jazz Encounters Award" for 2001.

VENESSA NOLAN - LIVE AT THE JAM

Venessa Nolan and her band will be performing at The Jam in Cape Town on Saturday night (November 17). It has been a very promising year for this talented, new Cape Town singer/songwriter. Her debut album, ‘Burn’, has spent a lot of time on the charts, and sold well, and has already produced a handful of mature and hooky pop
singles.

Venessa will be on vocals and keyboards in front of a full line-up after an impressive recent unplugged appearance with guitarist Bruce Muzik at Rafikis in Cape Town. The rest of the band is Carl Treurnich (drums), Morne Smit (bass), and Yolande Glover (keyboards and vocals). The VNB will be mostly playing tracks off ‘Burn’ as well as some new
songs that have begun to make their live appearances.

November 17 - The Jam (43 De Villiers Street, in District Six).

TSUNAMI LIVE AT CDW ROSEBANK

While it may seem that this extremely talented instrumental Jazz & World Music Trio has appeared out of nowhere, their journey to success has been a long and eventful one. Tsunami’s style ranges from Swing and
Bossa Nova to Funk and World Music. Although they have played in various different groups for many years, all three musicians formed part of the backing band for South African female vocalist Karma (‘Henry Ate’). Since the conception of Tsunami in 2000, this refreshing new trio has been established as a popular live music option. They will be doing a free concert at the Compact Disc Wherehouse on the 18th of November to promote their new album called ‘Tsunami’.

We are happy to exchange links with any good website supporting SA music. A good website in our opinion should be informative, regularly updated and linked back to us. If you already link to us and you believe your link should be here, please contact Brian Currin at mailto:sarock@sarockdigest.com

PRESS RELEASES
Please submit all press releases to Sugar at mailto:sugar@cd.co.za

CONTRIBUTIONS
Please submit all contributions, reviews, requests, searches and comments by filling in the form at:
http://www.rock.co.za/contact
or email Brian Currin at:
mailto:sarock@sarockdigest.com

No attachments, please. You can, of course, include web addresses (URLs) in your e-mails which point to websites or images online.

E-mails in HTML format, or all in lower-case or CAPITALS will tend to be ignored as they can take too long to correct for inclusion in the Digest.

Bulk mailings which show everybody's addresses get trashed automatically. Just use the "bcc" (blind carbon copy) function on your e-mail programme. If you want help on how to do this, please ask Brian <mailto:brian@cd.co.za> and he will try and assist.
