GEORGE HARRISON

Ex-Beatle George, born 25 February 1943, passed away at 1:30pm Thursday 29th November at a friend's Los Angeles home following a battle with cancer. Harrison's wife, Olivia and son Dhani, 24, were with him when he died. Among his compositions is the classic 'Here Comes The Sun' which was covered by SA Rock band Hawk on their 1971 'African Day' album.

FALLING MIRROR - POSSIBLE LIVE GIGS?
http://www.rock.co.za/fallingmirror

Falling Mirror duo, Nielen Mirror and Allan Faull, are planning a series of concerts at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town in December. This surprising announcement follows on from the
successful debut CD release of the band’s cult ‘80’s album, ‘Johnny
Calls The Chemist’ on the RetroFresh label earlier this year.

Nielen Mirror presented his latest dramatic project, a two-act
performance drama called ‘Parallel Suzie’, at the same venue recently,
and is keen to get back on stage. But many are sceptical about the
chances of such a gig happening as the band only ever performed a
handful of gigs (at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay) throughout its history,
due mainly to Allan Faull’s continued reluctance to appear live.
Hopefully that has all now changed, and we can get to see this cult SA
band on stage very soon.

REDDANGEL SIGNS TO SEXY RECORDS UK

Barely a year ago, British record executive Unie Moller of Sexy Records
UK was on holiday in Cape Town, when he happened upon two young men
busking at a service station on the road to the airport. The two, known
as Redd and Angel, were performing with an old beat-up guitar, in
exchange for loose change from tourists. So impressed was Mr Moller he
signed them on the spot. Or so the legend has it...

During 2001, Redd shot into the spotlight after recording the lead rap
vocal on Semisane’s smash hit 'Life (Theme from Big Brother)’. Angel
recorded a duet with TKZee for the forthcoming ‘Trinity’ album, entitled ‘Brotherly Sisterly’. The duo’s first maxi single on Sony/Sexy Records, ‘Fabulous Day’, was released recently and is already gaining a lot of radio airplay and interest. Sexy Records have now begun work on
ReddAngel's first full album, set to be produced by FullCrew (Mark
Morrison - Return Of The Mac, Craig David).

OHM RETURN

Techno rock band Ohm have just returned from a successful trip at the
international Holland Dance Festival. They were part of the dance troupe who performed in Jeannette Ginslov’s Julia, the controversial and riveting multi media dance show that deals with
prostitution, pornography and drugs in Hillbrow. Ohm composed the music. The show was first performed in South Africa at The Spoornet State Drama Theatre in Pretoria last year

They were then invited by the Holland Dance Festival to perform at this
prestigious dance festival. All performances of Julia were sold out and
they received standing ovations after every show. "We enjoyed an
extremely warm reception as a band," said lead vocalist Brendan Jury.
"We were on their pop culture television station West, for five
minutes every hour for two days. It became so that people would
recognise us on the streets!"

"The Dutch are famed for having an experimental DJ scene but many
people said they had never seen a live band that mixes aspects of techno and trip hop and rock. They enjoyed the way we experiment with dance music."

Ohm play their first gig since returning from Europe at Carfax on 8
December 2001. The event entitled OHMega is also the platform for the
launch of South Africa’s first electronica record label called
www.beats.co.za. Their first CD is Sub Sahara Oscillations Volume 1 and
features music by Asqus, Wintermute and Eargasm amongst others. Asqus
and Wintermute will also be performing on the night and The Vet from
G.A.S.S will be spinning trax inbetween.

Doors open at 21h00.

MESMERIZE - MAGNETIK
http://www.magnetik.co.za

Brother and sister pop dance duo, Aliki and Nicos Vouris, have released a sizzling Summer dance album titled 'Mesmerize'. Originally known as JC Culture, the title of their previous album is now the band's name.

With titles like 'Happiness', 'Dance With Me', 'Heaven Is Near' and 'Mesmerized' and with mixes by Timmy T, Tobie Allen and Phil Good you know that this is an album to experience and enjoy.

The title track is pure bouncy, catchy dance pop and a highlight is a 138bpm version of Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence'. Enjoy the music..

Play it at a party or at a braai or while driving in your car... just make sure you play it. Be mesmerized.

‘AFRICA’S NOT FOR SISSIES’ ALBUM AND TOUR

"Well I don’t know about you, feel like I’m living in a zoo,
I don’t go out anymore; I just sit by my TV..
with my poodle Evie, and we bolt up the door"

There have been some unofficial copies of Syd Kitchen’s latest opus,
‘Africa’s Not For Sissies’, floating around for a while now, refusing to leave the Digest charts and stereo. But now this stunning slice of
contemporary SA kop-folk has been given a general release with a crisp
sound, a new cover, and a hearty recommendation from these parts.

To celebrate the eventual release of this 11-track album, Syd Kitchen
will be heading off on a tour that will extend into the New Year, some
of those dates alongside his Aquarian Quartet guitar gang. This comeback album, by one of SA’s most talented troubadours, reveals that his songwriting touch has not deserted him. Besides the stark message of the otherwise jaunty title track, ‘Africa’s Not For Sissies’ is as
consistently wondrous as Syd’s classic ‘80’s album ‘Waiting For The
Heave’.

Back then his prime concerns were finding hope in the dark and
depressing South African political landscape that surrounded him. ‘ANFS’ finds this soulful and sincere survivor zoomed forward to the present taking another hard look at the current state of his homeland with a bunch of moving and unforgettable songs.

AFRICAN DOPE VOLUME 1 - VARIOUS ARTISTS

It was a certain Honey B who pollinated this joint release by young Cape Town label African Dope and major label Sony. The fruitful results are proudly displayed on this first compilation of the eclectic talents
currently passing the musical pipe around the African Dope studios in
Gardens. During the ‘90’s, Fletcher, the dreadlocked bear-like half of
the AD team, found himself in the midst of the burgeoning Bristol scene, when Massive Attack, Portishead ("It’s like calling a band Bellville!" he explains), Tricky and the rest of that influential posse made their various marks on the emerging UK trip-hop scene.

Fletcher kept that winning concept in mind when he and partner Roach
began accumulating the musicians and tunes that are now beginning to
appear on these African Dope albums and compilations. Names like
Moodphase5ive, Kalahari Surfers, Felix Laband, Ghettomuffin, Craig
Damster, and Anti Hero feature here in the first of what we believe will be an ongoing series highlighting the new sounds of Cape Town and South Africa.

Moodphase 5ive are naturally the pick of the pack, following the success of their ‘Steady On’ album, and five of that album’s songs - ‘Rise n Shine’, ‘Rhymedrop’, ‘Paradise’, ‘Violation’, and ‘Miles’ - appear here, in remixed forms. Then the ‘5ive’s lead vocalist, Ernie (aka Lady Ernestine), gets her own solo spot, performing the jaw-dropping soul-dub skank of ‘Praha Paradise’. This track once again leaves one (okay, me) salivating for her promised solo album.

Warrick Sony contributes three tracks off his new Kalahari Surfers’
album, ‘Akasic Record’, including the sinister groove of ‘Gangsta’,
‘Taako’ and that album’s opening world-themed ‘Dig It’. Sony also
co-wrote and produced Ghettomuffin’s ‘Paralyser’ track. The label’s
resident ‘Moby’ is Felix Laband who, we understand, has reams of his
poppy, electronic landscapes in the can. So neither of his two
contributions - ‘Wilddog’ and ‘Turn The Clock’ - are off his debut
album, ‘Thin Shoes In June’, but match that album’s quirky quality.

So this essential collection is a heady mix of some of the sounds,
styles and smoke currently emanating from the city on the southern tip
of Africa. It is also the kind of album that makes you wonder why this
gang don’t just buy a big bus, graffiti the entire surface, load up
these musicians and their equipment, and head off to spread these cool
sounds all around the country. It’s what Ken would have wanted. Buy
yourself some top class African Dope today! (9) (SSS)

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

JOE MEEK (fringe eccentric / genius)

When the multi-layered genius of Brian Wilson released his seminal "Pet Sounds" (by The Beach Boys in 1966), this could virtually be seen as America's answer to the production wizardry of Joe Meek. Back in the fifties and early sixties, the music of the UK was rigidly structured and incredibly restrictive. At a time when the establishment was regimental and the order of the day was under the direct rule of A&R men / producers, then cometh the revolutionary saviour Joe Meek. Meek hated tradition and would launch his career with an insistence on multi-layer overdubbing - strings, vocal percussion etc. He is acknowledged as the first engineer in the UK to experiment with multi-tracking and phasing, yet his main breakthrough was to close-mic a drum kit and isolate different musical instruments. In short he jarred the system, speeded up guitar breaks which resulted in numerous clashes with the individual artists.

Known as Robert George Meek he started out engineering live road shows for Radio Luxembourg. During the early years he co-produced countless hits at IBC for artists like Shirley Bassey, Lonnie Donegan and Petula Clark. A number of these artists reached #1 in the UK like "Garden of Eden" (Frankie Vaughan 1957, covered by SA band HOTRS in 1978 as a medley with Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida") and "Cumberland Gap" / "Gambling Man" (Lonnie Donegan, 1957).

Let us now venture into the esoteric world of a man who liked to keep the needles on the metres in the red and is probably responsible for blowing more valves than any producer ever known. We focus on a UK top 20 entry called "Bad penny blues" by jazz musician Humphrey Lyttleton released in July 1956. This up front drum and piano single created the blue print for "Lady Madonna" by the Beatles. Joe's historic recordings at Lansdowne Studios {"After The Fact" by Rodriguez was also recorded here - ed} produced one of the most progressive and strange singles ever to be applied to wax, "I hear a new world" by the Blue Men, a single likened to the visionary progression of Johnny Guitar Watson's "Space Guitar". Joe would create an extra terrestrial sound that seemed to strongly reflect a fourth dimensional influence. Only 99 copies of "I hear a new world" by the Blue Men were pressed.

In 1960 he built his own recording studio in a small flat in North London at 304 Holloway Road. Meek's incredible ability to source outstanding musicians as he roamed the clubs of London in the early hours of the morning, resulted in a host of virtual groups under the auspices of names like the Fabulous Flea Rekkers, the Blue Men, Puppets, Beat Boys and the Syndicats. Meek's guitar virtuoso of merry men comprised of Alan Caddy, Heinz, Big Jim Sullivan, Clem Cattini, Chas Hodges, Nicky Hopkins, Bobby Graham, Ritchie Blackmore and George Bellamy. His first independent #1 was John Leyton's "Johnny remember me". Countless singles rose up from the production flat, but over and above the reputed prominence, money always seemed to be short.

Part 2 of the Joe Meek story in next week's issue.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

SOUTH AFRICAN POP SONGS

Pure Pop songs might not have Social Significance, but they do evoke
Significant Emotions. Pop songs don't pretend to be more than musical fun whose goals during a brief lifetime are to please, and to sell lots of discs.

In fact, sometimes songs that intend Social Significance forget musical
entertainment. Education and enlightenment are nice, but secondary to fun. When a song is pleasurable to hear AND has depth of intelligence or social conscience, THEN one has a Real Song -- even if humor is the means to hold listeners' attention.

This is a list, with commentary, of fun songs by South African artists that have the High and Noble purpose of making our time on earth a little... funner. So in no particular order...

'Shabby Little Hut' by The Bats -- Lovely melody. If a band isn't innovative and revolutionary, then they should sing a clever melody that the listeners will need a jack hammer (or Jack Hammer) to dislodge.

'Understanding' by The Peanut Butter Conspiracy -- An extended boy-humor joke, not a chick joke. The humor is the irony between the romantic, compassionate tone of the song, and the actual words. I still laugh each time I hear it, though I'm not sure my wife has listened to it closely enough to get past the faux-earnest chorus because she hasn't yet objected to the song.

'Substitute' by Clout -- How could I not include this favorite? Each time Cindi
Alter turns to the chorus I feel her well-conveyed longing. I'd quickly
give up on the other girl and go with Cindi... you know, a bird in the
hand....

'Ag Pleeze Deddy' by Jeremy Taylor -- Pure fun, entertaining fun. And for a Texan 'way over here it is instructional (yet painless) fun. One of my all-time favorites.

'Miss Eva Goodnight' by Crocodile Harris -- Dramatic vocals, catchy lyrics and hook. Why isn't there a "Best of" collection for Robin Graham? Mr. Harris sounds pop, but his tunes rise above the genre with sincerity and meaningful lyrics -- while remaining a pleasure to listen to, which is important.

'Clap Your Hands and Stamp Your Feet' by Maria -- Both the extended version and the single release will stick with you and provide a perky walking rhythm for the day. Dangerous to listen to if you want your mind clear of catchy pop song echoes.

'Give Me Hope Joanna' by Dr. Victor, by Eddie Grant, by... -- Greatness here is aided by this uplifting song having been performed by various artists and even becoming part of a rugby anthem melody. Here's one of the many songs to enter the SA consciousness -- in other words, everyone knows it.

To give the gentle, nostalgic reader an idea of how many songs are not mentioned here, when I put on the six 'Best of SA Pop' discs and the three 'Yesterday's Best' CDs to sample the tracks, I kept thinking, "Here's a good one, there's a good one, here's another good one" -- so instead of popping them in to hear a track or two, I let all the CDs play through. It was a lot of fun.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

ROCK RABBITT - RABBITT

Were Rabbitt made up of Trevor RABin plus a BITt? The South African public was about to find out when a post Trevor Rabbitt released 'Rock Rabbitt'. Song writing responsibility now lay solely with Duncan Faure and the threesome took no chances in the studio with Julian Laxton co-producing alongside the band, Patric van Blerk as executive producer and Greg Cutler and Laxton taking engineering credits. All of these were already stalwarts of the SA music scene.

Few bands have survived the loss of one of its major talents, and Rabbitt turned out to be no exception as they called it a day after this release. However they did leave SA with an album of rather pleasant rock tunes, featuring some fine vocals and keyboard work from Faure. There is more than a shade of Supertramp on the album and none more so than on 'Mr Muso' although this album was released a full 2 years before Supertramp released their classic 'Breakfast in America'. There is also some nice racing paced rock in 'Rock n Roll Part One and Two' and 'Without her Love' that encourages one to obey the 'PLAY LOUD' command common on albums of that era (although not found on this particular album).

The Rabbitt sound is still present throughout the album and is probably at the fore in the Beatles-ish 'Hello and Welcome' a great tune of textures and shades with beautiful harmonies and swirling chorus. This is probably the best track on the album and leads into the poignant and apt closing track 'Goodbye and So-Long' which I'm sure was responsible for the great tissue sale boom of 1977 as young girls around the country said farewell to SA favourite rock band for ever.

One can ask what could have been. What if the boys had accompanied Trevor overseas? Would we be writing about US number 1's by South African groups now? Would "Rabbitt Rules OK?" have been emblazoned on banners in a packed Wembley Stadium? What if Allan Faull had accepted the job as Trevor's replacement, would we all have been eagerly awaiting the re-release of 'Johnny Calls the Hairdresser' earlier this year? Who knows? As it happens, the 3 remaining members made a worthy farewell album that probably never got the recognition it deserved.

LITTLE RED DONKEY

Hi I am looking for the lyrics for "The little red donkey" from the Troggs. Please help if you can. I used to live in Johannesburg SA. I am living in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA now.

All the best.

{The Troggs were not an SA band, but only South Africans seem to know this very obscure song, which does not appear on any Troggs "Best of" CD that I've ever seen - ed}

MEMORIES

I am from Harare now living in Perth. Spent 5yrs in Durban from 79 to 83. Nearly every sunday was spent at Le Coq Dor in Salisbury listening to South African bands. My favourite was Omega Ltd with Louis Greef setting light to his strat every week. He is still regarded by me as one of the best. The lights would go out during a number he would douse his strat with meths set the tune with his teeth and whip the strat over the heads of the dancers with the music blazing. Absolutely unbelievable.

Another top band was the Staccatos with their "Butchers and Bakers".
I was the first person in Rhodesia to get the 7 single from Potters. Unfortunately I don't have any of my collection. Can you buy CDs of these bands?

LOOKING FOR THE TRUTH

According to the book, History of Contemporary Music of South Africa (TOGA 1994), Abstract Truth recorded 3 albums. Is this true as I know of only 2 and your webpage also only states 2. Patrick van Blerk used to say that he knew also of 3?

George
mailto:musgsf@puknet.puk.ac.za

Reply from band member Peter Measroch:
This may sound silly but I really don't know. "Totum" had already been done when I joined the band and the only album I did with the
group was "Silver Trees", leaving SA shortly after.

The central Abstract Truth figure for continuity was really Kenny Henson and he would be the best person to speak to for that kind of history. I believe he is still in SA somewhere and should not be hard to trackdown. Try Dave Marks at the Third Ear Music website.

SHARON AGAIN

I've been in touch ages ago about Sharon Tandy. I now have a few more of her singles. I was recently contacted by someone stating that there is some interest in re-releasing some of Sharon's work and all I can remember is that her nephew contacted me about three years back.

Do you know of any way to contact him or anyone connected to Sharon? In that way I/we could indirectly put this chap in touch with her.

Best wishes,

AND SHARON ONCE MORE...

I'm trying to locate Sharon Tandy, and I was wondering if you may know of her current whereabouts, or possibly have contact info. I am compiling a CD anthology of her 1960s recordings, to be released on the UK reissue label Ace. It includes unissued material from her legendary sessions at Stax in the US. Obviously I would love to chat with her in this regard. I know she moved back to SA in the 1970s and got into the country field, but the trail seems to run cold after 1978. Any info you could supply as to how to get a hold of her would be most appreciated!

RUBBABAND

I have just discovered your great site and links. It evokes great memories of the terrific time that I had in JHB during the mid 70's.

I was fresh from Uganda and had heard a lot of the great Rock music that came out of SA at the time - Hawk, Freedoms Children etc. I was invited to a huge party in Sandton and witnessed a truly great rock performance from a fantastic band called "Rubbaband" (I think). They had the whole place jumping, with their hard driving US - Brit influenced twin guitar rock. I'll always remember the rivers of sweat evaporating from the crowd, running down the corrugated metal ceiling and onto their amplifiers and the band just played on.

I was introduced to the two guitarists later during their break, very nice guys - I remember the lead guitarist Dave Flockhart (Scottish, I think) and the singer Kenny Saint... both had gorgeous blonde models on
their arms (how come rock people always get the best women?).

The second half was like a dream come true for this country boy, as the band appeared back on stage this time with the lead guitarist from my favourite SA band Hawk and with Ramsay Mackay from Freedoms Children lurking in the shadows waiting to pounce on bass.

The singer from Hawk, then joined in with Rubbaband and said that he has just heard "the best new band in South Africa" and invited them to play at Hawk's Pretoria Rock Festival. I went to the gig and had a blast with Rubbaband backstage, real party animals.. they were the only band to get the crowd up and dancing until Hawk came on.

I later saw them at a gig at a school near Sandton, with a terrific new
singer called Larry Amos and I heard that they were about to record an
album. Do you know where I can buy this record and are the band still
playing?

Many thanks

LOOKING FOR A SPONSOR

"Art and music alive and kicking in Muldersdrift"

We need a cash sponsor, anything which might help. We are hosting a 4-day art & music mini fest in Muldersdrift, for a full programme visit http://www.strangefish.co.za.

We have sponsorship from HMV Litho, Castle, Radio Westrand and a few newspapers online/offline, however a private sponsor pulled out and I have tried numerous companies and people but with no luck, we will still have the festival but have to cut back on extras and artists performing live in this exciting outdoor event..

The aim for the art & music mini fest is to promote local art & music talent, up and coming bands and male/female artists.

There is little time left but I am still trying my best..

If you can help or can put me into contact with someone that might, it will be greatly appreciated.

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------

LUMIERE @ THE GUTTER CLUB CAMDEN
17 November 2001

Lumire are a London based band made up of 2 South Africans (brothers Cade & Ryan) and 1 New Zealander (Kim). Visually Ryan (on guitar) looks like Brian Molko of Placebo with dyed black hair and blue lipstick while Kim (on lead vocals) reminded me of Pulp's Jarvis Cocker with a Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran haircut. Cade (on keyboards) has an air of the Cure's Robert Smith about him. There was also a non descript bassist. Musically, the group's sound reflects the same influences that influenced their looks. They combine the poppy New Romantic sounds of early Depeche Mode and Duran Duran with the harder edged gothic sounds of Bauhaus and the Cure and add some modern industrial sounds from Nine Inch Nails and Placebo to create a thundering Gloom Rock sound.

They also know how to entertain. Kim has an aloofness about him and almost a contempt for the audience, but more in a showman kind of way than actual contempt. This done against the decor of the Gutter Club which included pictures of classic albums like 'London Calling' and Richard Hell's 'Blank Generation' being projected onto a screen. With the 80's revival coming into full swing (according to a recent NME), the combination of the music, the decor and the group's visual appearance could make them contenders in this new retro movement.

ODBALL @ EXTREMITIES

The launch of South Africa’s hardest and most progressive rock band ever happens on December 7th at Carfax. The band is Odball and the event is ‘Extremities’. Included in Extremities is an art installation by Carel Miles as well as drum ‘n bass from DJ Ricky Knite.

The doors open at 21h00 with a complimentary cocktail and soothing
sounds in what must now be considered the best venue in Johannesburg.
Carfax is located in the cultural heart of JHB and boasts (excellent
parking security to watch over cars ‘til late) and a warm and wacky
atmosphere. 23h00 ushers in the Odball live performance. This band is
guaranteed to cause skeletal damage as they manufacture and churn out
their body-bruising set ranging from grindcore to drum’ n bass to
organic metal delivered in the unique Odball fashion.

This new five-piece hybrid hails from Newtown, Johannesburg, and
features members who have all been active in the hard-edged music scene from groups like Plum, Seed, Diesel Whores and Morphattack. The foundation of the band is solid and relentless, oozing digital sounds around warped beats. Bass frequencies are hectic and the combination of the five vocalists keeps the songs provoking and colourful.

Tickets are R30 or pre-sale VIP tickets at R25 which gives you access to the VIP area and Odball Juice.
