CROUS AND CARSTENS

In the wake of the break-up of the Springbok Nude Girls, South Africa’s
biggest rock band of recent years, the vibe, energy and original intent
of the band remains intact and far from dead in the shape of its two
core members - guitarist Theo Crous and vocalist Arno Carstens. The two
are currently on the 2nd leg of their ‘Crous & Carstens Tour’, where
they deliver more intimate and subtle versions of their Nude Girls’
material. Joining them on stage for these appearances are Mike Rennie
(violin - from Sons of Trout) and Brian De Goede (drums). We will
announce the upcoming dates as we receive them.

-------------------

KOSHEEN AND BENT FOR SA

Top UK dance outfit, Kosheen, are heading our way. It's just been
announced that the Bristol-based group, best known for their smash hit
'Hide U' - a Big Brother SA favourite - off their debut album 'Resist',
will be in South Africa for a whirlwind Summer tour. There are also
rumours that this highly touted band, following in the dance-steps of
acts like Massive Attack, Soul II Soul, and Tricky will be accompanied by fellow top UK electronica outfit, Bent, whose lead singer Zoe Johnstone featured prominently on 'Outrospective', the latest hit album by Faithless. Tour dates to follow.

VUSI MAHLASELA WRAPS 2001 IN STYLE

Vusi Mahlasela, the internationally renowned BMG Africa troubadour, was
all action last weekend when he appeared live at The Bassline in
Melville on Saturday, and at the huge Jazz In The Park Festival in
Moretele Park, Mamelodi the following day. 2001 has been a pivotal year
for the gifted, yet humble man they call 'The Voice'. Pulling together
his backing band Proud People from the rich pool of Mamelodi musical
talent, Vusi has finally emerged as a dynamic bandleader and energetic
front man, and he and his backing band Proud People ended off a big year on a high with these two acclaimed performances.

Earlier this year, Vusi featured as a guest vocalist on the title track
of the latest Dave Matthews Band album, 'Everyday', now released as an
inspirational single following the Sept 11 attacks. He opened for Sting
on his SA tour, and joined the superstar onstage for harmonies on
'Fragile'. Vusi also launched the Mahlasela Music Development Foundation in Pretoria, and toured and recorded over in Scandinavia with his long time Swedish band, JiveConnection. He also found the time to appear at a number of major local music festivals including Splashy Fen and Up The Creek.

The rest of the year has been devoted to promoting his latest solo album 'Miyela Afrika' (released in 2000). Earlier this year Vusi secured a sponsorship from Rand Water to shoot a music video for the album's title track. He is now in much demand on the Corporate live music circuit, and his unique, rootsy music is also widely used in TV commercials for major brands including Bokomo, People's Bank and Volkswagen.

So, all in all, it has been a great year for Vusi Mahlasela, couldn’t
happen to a nicer muso!

LUNAR TUNES

LUNAR TUNES, Starring Christine Weir and Tina Schouw opened this Sunday 9th December at the I&J PREDATOR EXHIBIT, TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM, V&A WATERFRONT, CAPE TOWN with further performances on 10th, 11th, 17th 18th, 19th 20th, 22nd, 23rd of December 2001.

All performances start at 8pm..... and late comers will be fed to the sharks.

The two Divas are accompanied by Amanda Tiffin on electrifying keyboards and Miranda Basset on Cello. They are directed in this affair by none other than Lara Bye (she who spoke so freely of her nether region in "The Virgina Monologues"). I was lucky enough to see some of their rehearsal yesterday and let me tell you these girls make magic together with four part harmonies, crazy humour and good old fashioned sexual spunk, so miss them at your peril!!!

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

LANCE GOLDMAN - ‘SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME’

Lance Goldman is a well-known face and voice in KZN having grown up in
Margate on the South Coast of Natal. He has been playing his guitar and
writing and singing since then, playing the Durban circuit, touring
Europe and returning to gig around Natal in that fine old Natalian
troubadour tradition.

Those open plains of Namibia, Zim and Botswana echo through the obvious
Clapton and Knopfler influences in Lance’s guitar playing. Having
extensively travelled and performed through Southern Africa and Europe,
Lance recently decided to get all these songs down on tape and the
result is ‘Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time’, his debut solo CD which he recorded with Dave Abbot and some other good musical friends of the past 20 years.

‘Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time’ is a very enjoyable hour's
entertainment from this laid-back, amiable folkie. The songs are all
Lance’s own compositions and his views on society, life and nature are
expressed honestly and with gentle (and sometimes biting) humour on this collection.

Goldman’s guitar playing is highly accomplished, as heard in ‘Turn it
Loose’. In revealing his influences, Lance explains: "The first
guitarist that ever made me sit up and listen was Johnny Winter, with
his no mess no fuss style". Goldman’s voice is pleasantly light, belying the depth of messages of songs like ‘Uphill Slider’, the title track, and ‘Slow Motion’.

Tracklisting: ‘Africa’, ‘Soaking up Sinai’, ‘Ballad of a Lost Summer’,
‘Seemed like a good idea at the time’, ‘Endangered’ ‘Turn It Loose’,
‘Uphill Slider’, ‘Sea Level Blues’, ‘She Fooled Me’, ‘Feed The Fire’,
‘Slow Motion’, ‘20 Years’.

The ‘Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time’ CD is available from
http://www.oneworld.co.za/default.asp?affiliateid=4321 or directly from Lance on 0835169629.

----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

JOE MEEK (fringe eccentric / genius)
part 2

Finally the big one came in 1962 when the multi million selling "Telstar" by the Tornados topped the charts in the UK and the USA. It is of interest to note that this was the only guitar instrumental that emerged from the misty isles to actually make it in the USA. With all apologies to Hank B. Marvin of the Shadows, Joe's finest production of definitive echo guitar could be found on the track "Theme from the Traitors" by the Packbeats in 1962. Across the waters in the USA, Joe Saraceno applied a similar extra terrestrial embrace with his group the Marketts in 1964. "Telstar" set the stage for being adventurous in the studio and individualism rose its head with the likes of Phil Spector, Curt Boettcher, Brian Wilson, Sandy Nelson and Gary Usher.

Although Joe Meek is principally remembered for only two smash hits, the atmospheric "Telstar" and the British invasion stomper "Have I the right?" by the Honeycombs, his more affluent discoveries remain in the shadows of an archive covered with the dust of time. Some of the more definitive guitar groups to expound the Meek sound would be the Outlaws featuring Ritchie Blackmore, Chas Hodges and Mick Underwood and most likely their finest release "Valley of the Sioux". A further exploration of the magnificent guitar solos on their 1964 release "Keep a knocking" is well worth experiencing. All three musicians found superstardom with Deep Purple, Cliff Bennett's Rebel Rousers and the Heard / Quartermass respectively. Out of the designation of the Shadows, Meek controlled the greater portion of guitar instrumentals that rose up in the early sixties.

Alongside Oriole Records, the Meek sound would begin to rival the Masonic powers at EMI, Decca and Phillips. Some of the most articulate instrumentals to splutter the Shadows would be "There are eight million Cossack melodies and this is one of them" (Group X), "Samurai" (the Barons), "Getting it on" (Rhet Stoller), "Theme from the Tightrope" (Volcanos) and the finest English instrumental "Stampede" by the Falcons. Much of the inner musicianship from the various instrumental combo of the Meek production house comprised of a rather burley and good looking bass guitarist called Heinz, originally from the Tornados.

Joe's surreal history in the sixties created a seminal influence on musicians and vocalists as diverse as Glenda Collins, Peter Cook and Judy Cannon. Joe would show extreme partiality to those that were good looking (men), and it wasn't only the good looking Heinz that was seduced by the devious Meek, but body builder Ricky Wayne with his hit single "Don't pick on me" and the most prolific of Joe Meek's repertoire, the good looking Don Charles. He signed them up and contracted them with love and engineering. In the early days he had a premonition of Buddy Holly's death and tried with no avail to warn him, but it was common knowledge that Meek's obsession with Buddy Holly was clearly reflected in a number of recordings. Sadly he received no royalties from "Telstar" and was inundated with court cases resulting from plagiarism. This burden would finally be the demise of the meek and mild Joe when he put an end to the whininess of his landlady by blasting her away with his shotgun and then turning it upon himself.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

STICK AND STONES - KAROO

I know Karoo is from South Africa, but their CD appears to have a West Texas playground on the cover, cracked earth and all....

For the most part, Karoo, a trio, plays easygoing rock, punctuated by some rave-up guitar. Sometimes moody, sometimes gentle, sometimes hot, they're not so wild and guitar hard as Arapaho or Toxic Shame. But the guitar often does slash along nicely.

The second track, 'Mission Impossible' is their hit, a quiet and plaintive melody that showcases the singer's laconic style. It has appeared on the quality-packed 'Ocean Culture' and the first 'Sound Offerings from South Africa' compilations.

'Sticks and Stones' starts easily with a striding rhythm. After 'Mission Impossible', the album builds until by the fourth track they're playing sincere rock, pop, and a bopping number. Sometimes the guitar soars and the drums slam, but the album's overall tone is laid back, an impression conveyed by the singer.

It's a pretty album with sincere lyrics and an earnest singer accompanied by a fierce electric guitar and consistent drums.

Some stand-out tunes are the opener, 'Alone Again', the lovely 'Mission
Impossible', 'Desirata', 'Liberty' and 'Sha La La'. These tend to be played more aggressively. However, the last track, 'The Story of the Little Red Fox', is pure acoustic folk.

Karoo's 'Sticks and Stones' is a smooth album of nice vocal rock. It's a kinder and gentler rock that goes down easily and suits my day whatever I'm doing, from the morning's first cup of coffee to the evening's first beer.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

AFRICA'S NOT FOR SISSIES - SYD KITCHEN

One of the items included in the limited edition 'Packed up and Ready to Go' parcel that includes the new offering from Syd's Kitchen is a small bag of red African earth. This is really apt as musically this album conjures up images of African plains, of a timelessness, of lying under a boabab tree under a clear blue sky, gazing across the veldt, at one with the land and being enveloped with a profound sense of peace. In the distance, buck frolic while overhead... sorry I just had to go turn off the CD for a moment as this paragraph would have gone on forever, that's how strong the effect of the music is.

Syd Kitchen (no relation to Koos Kombuis) is a hugely talented songwriter, a hugely talented guitarist and a hugely overlooked South African musician. I must admit that I have been guilty of overlooking this gentle gigantic talent as I only recently heard the awesome 'Waiting for the Heave' (1985) and the equally wonderful 'City Child' (1995) and now the word Kitchen means a lot more to me than the pile of dirty dishes stacked up in the sink. It is now for me a mark of great quality.

Listen to the achingly beautiful 'Settler' or the movingly simplistic
'Elliot' with its refrain of 'It's so amazing living in paradise' and one cannot fail to be in some way enchanted by the sheer brilliance of it. This is an aural craft market of an album.

But it's not just the music that makes this album work. The lyrics are
insightful and poignant. It talks of the wonders of Africa and at the same time the horrors. In light of the recent murder of Marike de Klerk, the latter is eerily stark in the line from the title track 'You know the woman next door, they found her lying, lying on the kitchen floor, she'd been dead for days.' In contrast to this you have lines like 'I offer love, I ask redemption' from 'Settler' and 'He one with the Earth, she set him free, He got more friends than a leaf on a tree' from 'Elliot'. He has struck at the very core of the New South Africa and everything it has to offer.

Syd has the red dust of Africa running through his veins and a finger firmly on the pulse of a nation going through the birth pains of being born again. He is the hippest of hippies and has produced an album of extreme beauty and social awareness. This is a profound and important album, ignore it at your peril.

A light breeze wafts thought the long grass, stirring it into life and
disturbing the butterflies and grasshoppers. A herd of elephant saunter
lazily by... (Yup I've pressed play again).

10 [12] I Believe (in Love) - Hot Chocolate

* South African Artists

Eight weeks at the top spot meant that Charisma now equalled The Sweet's 'Co Co' for runs at the top spot. The Peanut Butter Conspiracy moved up 2 to ensure that the top 2 were local, and with Neville Whitmill at 4, it was a good week for SA artists.

Errol Brown's group Hot Chocolate scored their first top 10 hit with I
Believe (in Love). This came at the expense of Billy Forrest's 'Papa's gonna Kiss it Better' which he had released under the name William E.

Tom Jones, Middle of the Road and Tony Christie were the new entries into the top 20. Interestingly, the Sweet's 'Co Co' mentioned above exited the top 20 on the weeks that 'Mammy Blue' equalled it's number of weeks at 1. 'Co Co' had spent a total of 19 weeks on the top 20, 16 of those in the top 10 and was unsurprisingly the 2nd biggest hit of the year.

LITTLE RED DONKEY

Just picked up on the entry in last week's SA Rock Digest from someone looking for the words of 'Little Red Donkey'. You're right - as an avid Troggolyte I have also never been able to find this tune on any Greatest Hits compilation. The good news, however, is that I did recently buy it in the UK on a CD which contains two of their albums, 'Cellophane' and 'Mixed Bag'. 'Little Red Donkey' is the opening track on 'Cellophane'. This CD has been released by BGO Records and its stock code is BGOCD343 for anyone who may be interested.

For anyone else who may be interested, I also purchased 'The Singles' (looks like they're following the Kinks' recent release of a similar name), a Greatest Hits compilation which really has 26 containing all their well known stuff - except 'Little Red Donkey'! (There are also a couple of horrendous covers of songs like 'Good Vibrations' & 'Satisfaction'!). This CD has been released by BRMusic with the stock code BX538-2.

All the best

DREAM MERCHANTS
http://www.rock.co.za/files/dream_merchants_index.htm

I would love to obtain copies of the Dream Merchant's
'Predictions & Things' and 'Hang on to a Dream'. I had these
vinyls many years ago. Doing a web search I came across your
site, which showed the covers of this sorely-missed music. Would you know whether it is available, whether it is ever likely to become available, and if so how I could get hold of it. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Kind regards,
Creigh McNeil

I couldn't find it on your site and it is on no best of. Do you know of someone who can help me or a Lesley Rae Dowling website for more info?

GOBLIN

I was a member (keyboards and vocals) of the Pretoria band Goblin in
the years 1973 - 1974, and would like to get in touch with some of the
ex members. Hopefully they also read the digest? I only remember though their first names: Olaf - drums (he might be a lawyer in Cape Town, or so I heard last?), Andy - bass (Last I saw him late 70's early 80's in Pretoria), and I think the Lead Guitarist was Larry (saw him last also in Pretoria around 1977-78 at a Finch and Henson gig).
Any help will be appreciated.

FOUR OUNCE FREEDOM’S ‘HYPNOTISM TOUR’

Four Ounce Freedom, South Africa's premier Funk-Core band, have been
dazzling audiences around the country with their brand of angst-fuelled, hip-hop driven Modern Rock. ‘The Hypnotism Tour’, which kicked off on December 1st in Cape Town and then proceeded along the coast, finishes off in Gauteng at the official launch party for the band’s debut album, ‘Hypnotism’ at Zeplins in Pretoria.

Four Ounce Freedom, an "underground supergroup" consisting of ex-members of Cutting Jade, Placid Fun, and Belgian band Ribbed For Her Pleasure, have a sound that is best described as a fusion of cutting-edge Modern Rock and Nu Metal, with Pop hooks and anthemic choruses galore.

‘DIS NOU 'N DING’ FESTIVAL FOR RATANGA JUNCTION

Head to Ratanga Junction on Saturday 22nd December for the Afrikaans
music festival of the season. ‘Dis Nou 'n Ding’ promises to be a
fantastic night out in the company of South Africa's best-loved
musicians. Appearing on the star-studded bill is the sensational
Patricia Lewis who this year recorded her new, much awaited album ‘Vir
Ewig en Altyd’ in Sweden.

Working with international producer Charlie King (who has worked with,
among others, Dr. Alban) as well as her regular South African producer,
Dennis East, Patricia laid down six tracks in Sweden, including a Herbie Crishlow original, ‘The Crazy Little Things You Do’. Crishlow won a Grammy for writing the song, 'The Meaning of Being Lonely' for the Backstreet Boys. Other songs recorded in Sweden include ‘Lift Me Up’ and ‘You'll Always be My Baby’, written by King and East. The new album also includes four Afrikaans tracks.

Appearing along with Patricia are Klipwerf, The Campbells, Blackie
Swart, Wes Lee, Kurt Darren, Zak Van Niekirk, Naughty and Clive Bruce.

Tickets to what can be described as the biggest "Sokkie" of the season
can be booked through Computicket and cost only R50.00.

MONDETTA - IT'S A SMALL WORLD

New SA world hybrid, Mondetta, will be bringing their music to Cape Town when they appear at the River Club on Wednesday 12 December @ 21:30.
