FALLING MIRROR RETURN

A long-time Falling Mirror fan, and close friend of both Nielen Mirror
and Allan Faull, described the duo’s recent live gig at the Independent
Armchair Theatre in Observatory as "a small miracle". He wasn’t kidding! The idea, never mind the reality, of these two cousins appearing together on stage to perform songs from their five previous albums was simply ridiculous.

Until the debut CD release in 2001 of their ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’
‘80’s album, the band had only ever played a handful of legendary gigs
at the Brass Bell in Kalk Bay over their 10-year career, before dropping out of sight completely. There had been very little contact between the two since then, and Allan Faull’s long-term and well-documented reluctance to appear live always seemed irreversible.

But interest in the band picked up following the release of the ‘Johnny
Calls The Chemist’ album on the RetroFresh label. The album’s title
track has been a perennial favourite on SA radio but copies of the vinyl album were very scarce. The re-release of the ‘JCTC’ album, coupled with Wonderboom’s big radio hit with the title track, brought the band back into the SA spotlight.

In late 2001, Nielen Mirror appeared onstage at the Independent Armchair with a young actress in a self-penned, two-hander dramatic production called ‘Suzie Nightlite’. Nielen, thrilled at being back on stage in the spotlight after all those years, then began working with a producer called Deon DuBiel who assisted with the production of the band’s recent live appearance.

At the Armchair gig, in front of a small but devoted crowd, the band
performed on a low stage to some basic backing percussion tracks, with
Nielen (sporting half a pair of spectacles) adding vocals, gestures,
American accents and song info. Alongside him sat the duo’s iconic lead
guitarist who was clearly very nervous, but was soon squeezing out his
trademark sparks, and seemed to be enjoying himself more as the gig
unfolded and the audience began roaring its genuine appreciation.

The two-part concert was understandably a bit rusty in parts, but it was clear that neither of the two had lost their respective edges in the past years, and showed continual glimpses of the close musical bond
between them. They played many of their classics including ‘Making Out
With Granny’, ‘We’re Lost In The Universe’, ‘Johnny Calls The Chemist’,
‘Neutron Bop’, and ‘Revolver Wolf’.

They also premiered some strong new tracks, from the sweet pop of ‘Blue
Upon The Skies’ and ‘Dreamgirl’ to the psycho-punk of ‘Cat And Mouse’
(a bonus track on the ‘JCTC’ CD re-issue) and the more sinister ‘Dark Room Of Your Mind’ and ‘The Ghostly Trio’. These last two songs echoed the haunted feel of the ‘Mirror’s fifth unreleased ‘90’s cult album,
‘Hammerhead Hotel’ (a possible upcoming release on RetroFresh). The band are hopeful that these new songs will find their way on to a
"being-discussed" new album some time this year, and are also planning
more gigs during 2002.

Nielen is currently working on a novella called ‘Lies’, which
coincidentally deals with (as Nielen describes it): "...the story of
Marie, a psychopathic 14 year-old girl whose murderous revenge against
the director of a play she was acting in, brings about her elevation to
the status of media celebrity followed however by her eventual
downfall". Seeing as Nielen tends to write mostly from his own
experiences (he still visits that chemist on a regular basis!), we’ll
assume he had some problems with his young ‘Suzie Nitelite’ co-star.

So Falling Mirror are back, a little cracked and frayed at the edges,
but still capable of playing songs that seduce you with their guitar and tunes, and then flip you over with their naively bizarre and often scary lyrics. It was a small miracle and a major moment in SA rock history. Welcome back! (SS)

BLUES BROERS’ EMOTIONAL RETURN TO KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS

On Sunday (January 27) the Blues Broers will be storming back into
Kirstenbosch to reprise their acclaimed 2001 Summer Sunset Concert
appearance. These annual Blues Broers concerts, in this beautiful,
open-air venue, have become a worthy musical tribute to Frank Frost, the original drummer and founder of the band, who passed away three years ago on January 27.

Our review (in Digest #91) of last year’s concert on January 28 described those events as follows: "A slightly coolish Kirstenbosch Gardens was the place to hear hot blues on Sunday afternoon. Starting promptly at 5.30pm and playing to a packed hillside of Capetonian picnickers, the Blues Broers entertained the crowd with a superb set of blues standards and original songs. The band consisted of "Doctor" John Mostert on vocals, Albert Frost on stunning guitar, Rob Nagel on bass and amazing mouth organ, Simon "Agent" Orange on keyboards and journeyman musician Dave Le Warne on drums. After 3 or 4 encores we eventually let them go, leaving us well satisfied and shouting for more".

The band’s live CD 'Cellar Tapes', which was recorded at the Hidden
Cellar in Stellenbosch in December 1997, will be on sale at the gig and
the band will be available for autographs. See you there... get there
early!

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

DRAADLOOS VOLUME 1 (EMI)

"Draadloos" could mean either "unplugged" or "wireless" (what my grandfather used to call a radio). However, this compilation rocks way too hard to be termed "unplugged" and I'd be very surprised if many of these tracks have ever been played on national radio. Judging by the "Kyknet" logo on the cover, I believe "Draadloos" in this instance refers to the TV programme on DSTV.

This CD, compiled by Johan Scott, covers a wide spectrum of styles and years. It covers similar ground to the 2 'Alternatief Op Sy Beste' compilations, and though many of the same artists are featured, there are no tracks that are repeated from those 2 excellent compilations.

'Draadloos' has humour, songs about lost love, songs about love that won't get lost, funky songs, industrial rock, rap, blues, punk, bushrock, folk, and gospel. Whew!

The humour comes in the form of the tongue-in-cheek tribute to the early days of rock and roll with 1982's 'Budgie and the Jets' by David Kramer. Slightly more subtle humour can be found in Piet Botha's uptempo blues boogie work-out 'Blues Vir Louise' from 'Jan Skopgraaf', also on his recent 'Die Hits' compilation. "Vir jou is ek bang, banger as 'n pofadder, Louise".

'Lisa se Klavier' is one of Koos Kombuis' most well-known songs, and the version here features the superb violin playing of Koos's cousin. The song originally appeared on the 'Elke Boemelaar se Droom' CD in 1994, but Koos says he can't remember the violinist's first name. "I know his surname, though." says Koos. "He is a Vermaak. His older brother, who is better known to me, is Chris, who later became producer of my CD 'Madiba Bay'. A very talented family."

Theuns Jordaan has a deep emotive voice and this comes strongly to the fore on 'Hakieshart', a funky little rock tune. Other tracks include Valiant Swart's 'Die Mystic Boer', Johannes Kerkorrel's rocking 'Daar Is Geen', the bushrock reggae sounds of Anton Goosen's 'Dancer' (sung in English, ekshually), Brasse Vannie Kaap's 'Potjiekos' (not sure how to describe their sound! BoereRap, maybe?) and Battery 9's industrial 'Blaas Hom'. There are also songs from Karen Zoid, Akkedis & Spinnekop.

Right at the end of this CD we find 2 great, though completely different, tracks. Wouter van de Venter rocks with the sexually-charged 'Meneer Geweer' with its raw guitar solo. "Gee my jou geweer, meneer".
And the last track is 'Ryg My Lippe Toe' from a new name to me, Reana.
Atmospheric sounds and floating vocals from this newcomer (she shared the Geraas "best newcomer" award with Karen Zoid last year and her self-titled album won the Geraas Award for Best Gospel album).

'Draadloos' is boldly sub-titled "Volume 1"... does that mean there will be more CDs like this? Yes, please!

MANN FRIDAY

This new Cape Town-based rock band is a Zimbabwean/South African musical union comprising Rob Burrell (lv, rg), Ross Hopwood (b), Julia Wakeling (k.vi), Angus Wakeling (vi, bv), John Murray (d) and Sean Ulyate (lg). The six-piece recorded a 10 track demo album last year and their debut Cape Town gig was at Tableview’s Whammy Bar in June, followed by a rapid succession of acclaimed gigs at Cape Town venues including the Purple Turtle, the Wipeout, the Whammy Bar, The Independent Armchair Theatre, The Jam and 206. In mid-September the band recorded the ‘Valley Of The Wizards’ single at Nuthouse Recording Studios.

During July 2001, Mann Friday were contacted by a UK venture capitalist
interested in the band’s future. Funding for recording of an album was
later confirmed and the band will begin recording this month. However,
the band have decided upon a unique recording process to hopefully
complete the album for a March 2002 release. The entire band is leaving
society behind, jobs included - and relocating an entire recording
studio to an apple orchard on the banks of the Theewaterskloof dam for
50 days. They are hiring a professional recording engineer, a producer,
and the band’s website http://www.mannfriday.com will be kept fully up
to date with journal and photo entries about the journey. The revamped
site was launched on 18th January 2002 and will contain a fully
comprehensive media library of how, when and where Mann Friday rock.

RUST

Rust is a new Cape Town-based folk-rock band, formed by Steve Van (g.bv) and Ross Behenna (v.rg) (both previously with The Jungle Book Vultures), with Adam Black (b) and Gary Beckman (d), both ex of Social Pirahna and The Shooflies.

The band’s debut independent 5-track CD, ‘Factor 35’, was recorded at
Paris Studios in Fish Hoek, and was launched at a well-supported gig at
Chilli 'n Lime in Greenpoint last October. Barney Simon showcased the
single, ‘Factor 35’, on his South African Music Explosion show, and
daytime airplay followed in December.

The band is planning a series of gigs this summer, and is currently
working on material for a full-length release with Street Level Records. They are also collaborating with SLS and web developers Surroundbox.com to establish a web portal dedicated to Street Level recordings for the release of singles in MP3 format.

Catch Rust on Friday 25 January at The Zem Kafe, 4 Buiten Street Cape

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

BADFINGER (the evergreen apple)
Part 2

Christmas 1970 the power driving "No dice" album blasted the English. Out of the electric energy of this tight fusion came the outstanding single "No matter what" (#8, 1970). Many would remember the false ending that floored most dancers in the mid seventies. Yet sadly it was here in the confines of this elaborate rock release that Harry Nilsson would cover Pete and Tom's "Without you", topping the charts worldwide (1972). A revival of this classic melody would tantalise the millennium generation through the voice of mushy Mariah Carey (1994).

The future looked good with Badfinger touring the states in humble Greyhound busses with a sheer determination to make it work. Apple records obviously favoured Christmas release as in the 1971 album "Straight up". This hastily recorded album was dogged with innumerable gremlins. Firstly due to their pressurised flight to America, the album had to be mixed in one day. Apple Records were not happy with the recordings and were looking for a Mersey sounding harmony that would capture the commercial market of the UK. The still untitled LP had received a thumbs down from the sponsors. While the group were touring the states, keyboard maestro Al Kooper (Supersession man) stepped in to add the piano and organ overdubs to a re-mix of "Name of the game". This classy ballad had already been assigned as their next single. Dark days had descended for what proceeded was a rejection of the "Name of the game" and the 1972 single release "Baby blue".

In true hippie spirit George Harrison stepped in to assist the depressive situation. Harrison brought a freshness and magical energy to some of the old songs that would be re-recorded from scratch. Finally a single was released in 1972 called "Day after day" which found enormous success in America. With George on the production side, the single went gold. Not only did Harrison feature on the slide guitar but a very special energy of spiritual brotherhood developed between him and Pete Ham. The great Leon Russell stepped in to play piano on "Day after day". Leon lived his own words "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" by giving off of his spirit and talents with little financial reward.

Yet again destiny would not play its hand, when with just four tracks completed George had to pull out of the sessions for a cause close to his heart - the Concert for Bangla Desh. Naturally Badfinger were invited to play at the charity concert held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on 1st August 1971. Pete Ham's acoustic contribution when assisting George on the classic "Here comes the sun" was superbly executed. With George out of the production role, Apple recruited the electronic genius of an American called Todd Rundgren. Todd's history as an engineer was highly recommended in particular the album "Stage Fright" by the group the Band. However when it came to solo albums, Todd's deliverance of ballad and vocal ability was superior to say the least. In two weeks the album was completed and the wizardry of Todd's ability paid off.

Continued in next week's issue...

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

THE FAT LADY SINGS - SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS

Not really gone (I can play their CDs anytime I want), and certainly not forgotten. Theo and Arno, the voice and the guitar of the group, are both still playing around, so we can look for more of their creativity.

Even though not every one of SNG's songs is one I think great, some are
works of rock art. Some songs do sound silly, in fact (but none of those are on this release). But when the voice, guitars, drums, and the sometimes trumpet, mesh, the music is breathtaking, as in 'I Love You' and 'Supergirl'.

But, gosh, overall this was a band/force to be reckoned with, a great rock hope for SA. Other Americans are also aware of these guys who, for me, represent South Africa's creative rock powers, yet are but one band out of many in a musically dynamic country.

This Best of 18-track CD goes from a slow build to raucous rock, from the lovely 'Lonely' to 'Spaceman' at the end. Despite a few delicate valleys among the rockers, as in 'Giant Love Affair' and 'Horizontal Landscape', this is definitely a rock CD. The first three tracks flow easy, then the hooky 'Bubblegum On My Boots' initiates the big rock klank phase of the CD.

Of course, the Nudies' songs are not so easily defined as, "This one is hard rock," or "That's melodic rock", for many of their tunes have movements from soft to hard. I still think of them as The Band of a Thousand Licks. For example, 'Genie'. It rises and falls to and from shouting vocals and a loud, loud guitar -- and does so quite naturally, without jarring transistions.

As a final bit of praise for this talented band, the two new songs are not merely pleasant bonus tracks less interesting than the other songs. They stand with the Springbok Nude Girl's best. 'J59' and 'Dimmer' shine, especially the latter number.

If, by chance, you're unfamiliar with the music of the Springbok Nude Girls, risk a few Rand on this CD. If it hits you right, try 'Surpass the Powers' and 'Afterlifesatisfaction'. If those two CDs hit you right, go for the rest of their catalog of albums, EPs, singles, and remixes. Ask one who knows and I'll tell you that's how it goes.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

TIME TO SUCK - SUCK

The Scene: Beavis & Butthead's living room. Beavis takes a CD out of a box and places it into the CD player. The camera focuses on the CD cover that features a young child next to a drum pedal staring up at the viewer. The cover is also sporting a Retro Fresh sticker. A barrage of drums and guitar pour out of the speakers.

Beavis (looking at the CD cover): Huh-huh huh-huh This band Sucks huh-huh
huh-huh

Butthead (absorbed in playing a mean air guitar solo looks up some what taken aback): No way man, these guys kick, you know like, butt.

Beavis: Huh-huh He said butt.

Okay so they had a risqué name, but it could have been worse. According to the sleeve notes {by Leon Economides - ed}, they did consider using an F in place of the S. Mildly controversial by today's standards, but in those days virtually everything about Suck caused the guardians of morals to tut-tut, frown and ban them from doing anything (although secretly, while the kids were at school, they would pull their copy of 'Time to Suck' out from the bottom of their underwear drawer, crank up the gramophone and let rip).

In their short history (about 8 months) Suck made one album and created more mayhem than most bands do over a 10 year career. But what an album. 'Time to Suck' is a highly charged package of manic drumming, scorching guitars and sublime wailing vocals from the sadly departed Andy Ionnides. Consisting of 8 cover versions of rock classics and 1 self-penned tune ("The Whip"), this is an unrelenting album of full on, uncompromising ROCK!!!!

It all culminates in the CD bonus track, a cover of Black Sab's 'War Pig', which assaults the senses with a barrage of screams, drums and guitars for just over 7 glorious minutes, causing many an air guitar to be smashed to pieces over imaginary amps in bedrooms all over the country (except perhaps in Welkom if the sleeve notes are anything to go by).

Suck descended on an unsuspecting SA music scene, swiftly gained a bad
reputation, produced an album of white hot rock which could easily rub
shoulders with the like of those they were covering (Deep Purple, Black
Sabbath, Grand Funk, King Crimson, etc) and then just as quickly disbanded and disappeared. Disillusionment with their management and the SA music scene in general (which had done them no favours) meant that their 15 minutes of fame was over in 8 months, but what a great 15 minutes. Now thanks to Benjy Mudie at Retro Fresh, those of us that weren't there can get a small feel of the excitement and musical energy that made up Suck.

Beavis: Huh-huh huh-huh He said Suck.

Imagine one of modern rock's greatest heroes being kept off the top spot by a group with a name as average as Middle of the Road. What was the record buying public of 1972 South Africa thinking? Oh well, at least they supported the local artists that week with positions 3 to 5 being home-grown hits.

Numbers 9 and 10 had both rocketed into the top 20 at number 10. Spring Water jumped one place after it's meteoric rise into the charts while Tony Christie had arrived at number 10, dropped to 12 in it's second week then recovered lost ground to climb back to number 10 in week 3. So a good start did not necessarily indicate great success. Peter Maffay's 'You' had cleared the way for Tony Christie's revival.

Outside the top 10 there was another high new entry with Barbra Streisand leaping into the chart at number 11 with 'Mother'. Time would tell whether this dramatic start would end in a number 1 hit. Tommy Roe's 'Stagger Lee' bowed out the charts that week.

South African's at number 1 this week:

Look out, Here comes Tomorrow - The Dealians (1971)
Substitute - Clout (1978)

"Sy is my Evita," sê hy.

Beeskraal rocks!"

-------------------------------------------

ARCHIE VAN DER PLOEG

My dad, Archie van der Ploeg, passed away in his sleep on Jan 10, 2002 at 16h30 after having a heart attack. Was living in Windhoek. Was quite involved in the SA music scene in the 60's with the Giants and The Silhouettes. Just thought you should know.

HOW OLD IS STEVE NEWMAN REALLY?

Is Steve Newman going to be 50 or 60? According to the article (in last week's Digest) he will be 50, but under "Birthdays" you state that he was born in 1942, which will make him 60.

Thanks

Jakkie Groenewald

{Oooops, my mistake, Steve was born in 1952 - ed}

BRIAN THOMAS

I have had some response from people who want to get in touch with Brian Thomas (Bass guitarist with Mickie Most and His Playboys). Please would you put his E-mail address in the SA Rock Digest. It is mailto:tomcat00@freemail.absa.co.za

Regards

Neville

5TH ASSOCIATION

I was the bassist & founder of the band (before Barbara Ray was recruited). I wonder if it is possible to get the contact numbers of the guys? As far as I can remember (funny how the grey cells are failing) they are: Piet Kruger; I believe he later worked under the name of Peter Farrington, Jan Kruger brother of Piet, Gerrie Van Wyk not the one from fruitless discussion. He did some cabaret with Jody Wayne. Piet also appeared on TV. I think cabaret was part of the title. I would be hugely grateful for any information.

TRIVIA QUESTIONS

I was born in SA 1951, left 1979.

1: are there any published or web listings of the LM and Springbok top 20 singles for the years 1956-1970?

2: Who recorded in the early to mid-sixties a song of which the first few lines were 'Happy birthday my darling, and many many more, the gift I have for you, is a promise to be true, Tomorrow starts a new year....' and what was the release year? (How come I need to know this? - I'm a Hendrix/Zeppelin/Kinks/Blues man!!!)

3: In what year did Johnny Kongos and the G-Men appear in - wait for it... UMTATA! (my first live gig).

4: In what year did Mickie Most perform/compere at a talent contest at the Orient Beach in East London? (I was lying above - THIS must have been my first live gig!)

5: are there any SA web sites dealing in second-hand vinyl/CDs?

Thanks for any help. Rock on.

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------

BLK SONSHINE LAUNCH THE ‘WONDER GIGS’

Saturday night saw the first of the ‘Wonder Gigs’ performed and recorded at the SABC Beach Road Studios in Sea Point. An enthusiastic crowd of 300 Blk Sonshine fans (of all ages!) helped, applauded, sang along with and cheered Masuako Chipembere and Neo Muyanga through the seemingly smooth and stress-free recording of their upcoming live (second) album. This hugely talented "Simon and Garfunky" SA duo played some favourites off their first album (‘Crazy’, Agitation’, ‘Born In A Taxi’), and previewed the new songs due for inclusion on what is certain to be a very special live album.

The ‘Wonder Gigs’ are the brainchild of Iain Harris and his Afribeat.com partner Struan Douglas, and were made possible by the participation and generosity of the SABC Beach Road Studios. Harris explained the name chosen for this innovative series of live recordings featuring some top contemporary SA music acts: "We toyed with the idea of calling them the ‘Beach Road Studio Sessions’, but when we came up with the ’Wonder Gigs’, it felt more appropriate". The glow on the faces of those two "Afribeatles", and all those others that helped turn that idea into a reality, was continually evident and well deserved.

The concert ran for over two hours with only a few small interruptions,
apart from the occasional pinging digital watch. The first song of the
second set was halted due to a ringing cell phone, but its very skaam
owner was gently chastised, and the audience was urged to "switch off
and bask in the Sonshine". We all did, and were treated to some
typically melodic and emotional new songs like ‘Ascension’, ‘Lies’,
‘Sleepless’ (which evolved into a sing-a-long of ‘My Favourite Things’), and an un-named song-prayer for the safety of all the woman of our land, which featured the audience singing the chorus.

The highlight of the night, besides the guest appearance of guitarist
Jimmy Dludlu on a few of the songs, was a beautiful, extended new
composition called ‘Echoes’. Masuko introduced this song by describing
how a night of lovemaking had moved him to write it ("We didn’t make a
baby, but we made this song"). He explained that sometimes a night of
great passion "echoes" around your body the whole of the next day. He
could have been describing this opening ‘Wonder Gig’. Don’t miss the
next ones! (SS)

BILL KNIGHT presents

SMITSWINKEL CALLING (a journey into the Interior.)

Singer-songwriter, Bill Knight, an egte Kaapenaar, layers his authentic
contemporary Cape-folk music with poetical lyrics of depth and intensity, written in a characteristic Bredie of English and Kombuistaal, providing a personal but universal insight into the not so ordinary lives of everyday people.

Bill’s new solo show "Smitwinkel Calling" is an intimate and personal
presentation of the Songs, Stories and eccentric characters brewed from the water of Smitswinkel Bay; a near-mythical haven at the foot of the
Peninsula. Hear about Roy and the Spanish Sherry; Hughie and the "Blaawbeck"; and the Legendary "Varkie" and how he saw his Gat.

Featured in the show are a number of Bill’s well-loved songs, as well as an exciting selection of new material presently being recorded for his third album.

See it first at the Vegie-Table, Kalk Bay. Saturday 26 Jan 2002.
Booking absolutely essential, Ph (021) 788-6967.
