OBITUARY: Archie van der Ploeg

The passing away of Archie van der Ploeg on Jan 10th, 2002 has added to the closing of an era in the history of South African pop music, for he was indeed a true pioneer of the recordings of the 60's era and his guitar work can be heard on just about every recording made at the time, because he was without doubt the first choice guitarist in
most studios until his departure, some years later, to firstly Cape Town and then to his beloved Namibia, where he lived, initially in Swakopmund and more recently, in Windhoek where he passed away.

Your guitar may be silent now, but your legacy will live on forever in the hearts and minds of the many people who were touched and moved by your magnificent and endless talent... rest in peace my friend.

SARON GAS CHANGE NAME

South Africa's top rock trio - Saron Gas - will be changing their name to SEETHER.

The name change comes as a result of their move into the international market and the potential difficulties that may be experienced with the association to Sarin Gas - the lethal nerve gas.

The name change is a marketing strategy more than anything else - to ensure no difficulties when the band releases in Europe and the Eastern markets later this year. Trademarking and reservation is currently underway.

Seether/Saron Gas are currently in studio in New York working on the new album [title: to be confirmed] set for release in June 2002 under the Wind Up Records label.

For further information please contact Ingrid Roding
mailto:ingridusa@fem.co.za

{And along with their name, the website http://www.sarongas.com, seems to have disappeared as well. And the solitary webpage at http://www.seether.com seems to be unrelated to the guys we knew as Saron Gas - ed}

THE DIGEST IS 3

The first edition of the SA Rock Digest was emailed out to an initial
group of 15 subscribers on Wednesday, 27 Jan 1999 (at 21:08:21, to be
precise). So, as the years roll by, we like to acknowledge that specific date every year. But what is it exactly we are celebrating here, a birthday or an anniversary?

That’s a chin-stroking question you’ll admit, but one we’ll happily
ignore as the streamers fall, corks pop, and our dedicated team of SA
music scribes, and researchers momentarily pause to sip some assorted
drinks, nibble on the some cake, and ponder the significance of this
event, before swivelling back to face their PCs.

Three years on and we’re still pumping out a regular week’s worth of SA
rock (and other) news and info to a subscribers’ list that has grown a
lot quicker than we dreamed back then. The Digest now zips off to
countries all over the place and gets email and music from everywhere.
The original idea was to create a simple forum for all those with an
interest in SA rock from the past 40 years.

But the current South African Diaspora is vast and the interest in SA
rock, past and present, is amazing and encouraging. We don’t appear to
be running out of past just yet, and there’s always a ton of new, great
SA music popping through our letter slot every week. So as long as you
don’t all unsubscribe at once, we’ll happily keep the news, views,
reviews, new releases, concert details, queries, searches, research, and everything else flowing your way weekly.

And Thank You to all our contributors, readers, and most of all, SA
musicians past, present and future.

And on we go...

THE AWAKENING
News from the world of The Awakening, January 2002...

The ‘Summer of Darkness’ tour in support of The Fountain was a
resounding success with many venues already booking follow-up shows and
excellent attendance at all gigs. ‘The Fountain’ is now available
through most decent music stores and selling well.

The Awakening has just confirmed it will be headlining the ‘Rock Against Rape II’ benefit concert on 2 February at Cool Runnings, Wonderboom, alongside the bands Tweak, Pet Flyz, Cutting Jade, Four Ounce Freedom and Silex.

The single ‘Martyr’, from ‘The Fountain’, is currently at No. 9 on the
5FM Modern Rock Chart. Show your support for The Awakening, and
represent Gothic music, by voting for ‘Martyr’ by mailing
mailto:barney@5fm.co.za your vote. Each vote means more representation on national radio for Gothic music and proof that there is demand for such music in South Africa.

The Awakening would also like to congratulate Silex on their debut
album, ‘Legendary Beauty’, which is due out in early February. The
Awakening would also like to wish Allen and Anna the best of luck with
Gateway, which will be open every Friday at Carfax in Johannesburg, and
wish them every blessing for their continued efforts to enliven and
enrich the Goth/Electro scene in SA.

ROCK AGAINST RAPE II

Intervention Arts and Tuks FM proudly present ‘Rock Against Rape II’,
the first major SA rock event of 2002. Following the record-breaking
success of last year's ‘Rock Against Rape’ benefit concert, Intervention Arts, in association with Tuks FM, South Africa's top campus radio station, will again be raising money for charities that benefit rape victims, and raising awareness of issues surrounding the
all-too-prevalent crime of rape in South Africa.

Rock Against Rape II will take place on 2 February 2002 at Cool
Runnings, Wonderboom, in Pretoria, and will feature some of South
Africa's finest Punk, Emo, Goth, Hardcore and College Rock bands, all
playing to raise awareness and money for this worthy cause.

The bands performing are:
Four Ounce Freedom, who are the rising stars of funk-hardcore/ nu metal, with a recent number one on Tuks FM, and a brand new album, ‘Hypnotism’, released by Intervention Arts and produced by Lanie vd Walt of Not My Dog.

Silex are an up-and-coming Goth Rock band, who were finalists in a
previous Emerging Sounds band competition and the darklings of the Gauteng alternative club scene with their dramatic brand of electric Gothic Rock. Silex have an album due out in February on Intervention Arts, a lead vocalist to challenge Marilyn Manson, and a sound that is
best described as "violently symphonic".

Tweak have taken national, commercial and campus radio by storm with
their infectious brand of Punk Pop. Hits like ‘Oo La La’ and ‘Britney
Spears’ have made them one of the fastest selling bands on the
Intervention Arts distribution catalogue. Pet Flyz are a Pretoria-based
Emo-Punk band, with a cult following in the punk scene and a reputation, gained through airplay on Tuks FM and 5FM, for writing some of the finest emotional Punk South Africa has heard.

Cutting Jade are one of SA’s top pop-rock bands, and their debut album,
‘So There We Were' is among the most popular on the Intervention Arts
catalogue, due to the massive success of songs like ‘She Says’ on 5FM,
national and campus radio, as well as inclusion on top festival line-ups and the ‘Showcase3: Unearthed’ compilation and wide critical acclaim for their brand of Pop Rock.

The Awakening is SA’s top Goth band after six years of success and
innumerable local and international successes under their belts. They
have a new EP out, with singles climbing up the 5FM Modern Rock Chart as well as the playlists of Campus and alternative stations around the
country and the world.

These six bands, representing the finest that cutting edge Rock has to
offer, are all performing to benefit charity and raise awareness around
the dangerous time of RAG in University towns. Charities benefiting will be counselling charity, Inter Trauma Nexus, and NGO, People Opposing Women's Abuse.

2 February 2002. Bands start at 19:00. Cover: R30. Spread the word.
Don't just sit there. Be there. Make a difference.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

COMMUNATE - STARSKII

"Quiet is the new loud" was one of the catch phrases that filtered
through from the UK last year. It is the title of an album by the Kings
Of Convenience, one of the highly touted exponents of this evolving
gentle, almost deliberately twee, musical style. That Norwegian duo
found a local ally in the UK duo Turin Brakes, whose ‘The Optimist LP’
took this "sweetly-sung folk-rock with an edge" to new heights. To that
exclusive little list we could now add the name Starskii.

With ‘Communate’, this new SA duo seem to have taken that catch phrase
to heart, combined the best bits of those two excellent albums as a
starting point, and produced a fresh, original and quite excellent
debut.

‘Communate’ is only 48 minutes long, but crams enough unfolding ideas,
diverse melodies, perceptive lyrics and sheer invention into its 12
songs to make it almost feel timeless, like an afternoon nap. The seven
songs that make up ‘Part 1’ of ‘Communate’, are a musical commentary on
a day in the life of these ex-Amershamers (Adam Lomas and Nathan
Waywell).

It starts with the woozy bass, detached vocals and seagulls of ‘Monday
Madness’, which is followed by the meandering and wordy ‘Too Much’, a
delicate ballad that begins with a description of a road rage incident
but smoothly relaxes after that, with its soothing "There’s too-oo much
tension" chorus.

If you’ve never heard drum ‘n bass folk songs before, then Starskii will update and impress you with the songs ‘Bhavatu Sabba Mangalam’ (boasting one of the many gorgeous piano pieces on this album), the waltzy ‘An Evening With Absalom’, and ‘The Battle Of Bethlehem’. ‘The Beautiful Thing’, which ends ‘Part 1’, ups the general tempo by using a typical Depeche Mode synth crunchiness to surround the vocals.

The five songs of ‘Part 2’ take us into after-hours territory, beginning with the breathy, ambient instrumental ‘First Term’, which leads straight into ‘Ecstacy’, the band’s speedier percussion-driven chill-out anthem. Then there’s the upliftingly happy folk song called ‘The Boy Who Flew Too High’, and ‘Temporarily Unbelievable’, which melds a simple guitar strum with a fuzzy bass hum as a backdrop to the existential "why?" of its lyrics. The album’s closer, and first single, is ‘Did You See It Coming?’, which is as close as this album gets to a conventional song with its chanted title and grinding guitars.

Credit to "visual director" Brandon Barnard for the album’s classy
reddish cardboard sleeve, and all-round design, that adds much to the
album’s overall feel. ‘Communate’ is a head album, and ahead of its time in many ways; and it will wrap itself around you like a warm duvet, if you let it. (8) (SS)

SHILOH'S CORNER

BADFINGER (the evergreen apple)
Part 3 - Conclusion

"Straight up" became Badfinger's milestone album. It reflected the essence of talent, ever enduring and born out of turbulent times. Over and above the outstanding singles, hippie spirit came to the fore with a song called "Perfection" that suggested the power of dialogue over and above violence. This prophetic ballad would come to light in the eighties when Nelson Mandela embraced the philosophy with outstanding success.

During the release of Badfinger's fourth album "Ass" with a respectable single "Apple of my eye", the group changed label and moved to Warner Brothers. The album included a mudsling at John Lennon on the track "The winner". Most of "Ass" was under the control and authority of Joey Molland which now in hindsight is looked upon as a hasty decision, robbing the album of Pete Ham's song writing talents. The majority of Badfinger fans regard the album "Wish you were here" as their finest release. Twenty five thousand copies a week were sold, but yet again the gremlins rose up. Due to a $600 000 royalty disappearance the group pulled the album from the stores. The continual disappointments and management problems resulted in Joey Molland departing.

Shortly afterwards a despondent Pete Ham hanged himself in 23 April, 1975. The third album for Warner Brothers, although recorded, was never released. Badfinger never received any royalties from its days with Apple Records until 1985. Unfortunately by then Evans had also committed suicide in the same way as Ham. Joey Molland and former drummer Gibbons continue to tour as Badfinger. What was probably the saddest story in rock could well have been the classiest seventies act to bridge the gap between glam and the progressive revolution. Various live performances by Badfinger at the BBC paint a poor reflection of the musical genius of these timeless flower children.

A more vibrant focus should be given to the live recording at Cleveland, Agora, recorded in 1974 and featured as an album "Badfinger live, day after day". After experiencing the electric brightness of this superb concert, one would understand why America warmly embraced these predestined musicians. During the eighties Ringo Starr was interviewed by a radio DJ who casually mentioned the sad demise of the pop band Badfinger. Ringo snorted "Hardly pop" and got up and left the studio. Badfinger however misinterpreted will always leave a legacy of fine musicianship and song writing ability that somehow slipped into the shadow of Golem.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

FROM 4 TO 9

On this third anniversary of the SA Rock Digest, allow my eyes to soften my eyes and my voice to wax nostalgic.... as I remember my first One World order.

It was May 1998, the order was for Volumes 1 & 2 of 'The Very Best of Four Jacks and a Jill'. My second order was for Just Jinger's 'Something for Now' and the Radio Rats' 'Into the Night We Slide' -- those four CDs, and the CD of 'Galactic Vibes' by Freedom's Children found in Austin, Texas, hooked me on SA rock as music made by world-class creative people.

When a teenager, the first lp I bought was 'Master Jack' by Four Jacks and a Jill. The second lp was Led Zeppelin's first record. I've maintained that diverse musical taste ever since. To paraphrase Brian, I enjoy SA rock from Four to 9, from Four Jacks and a Jill to Battery 9.

My subsequent One World orders bonded me to SA music, especially the one containing 'Afterlifesatisfaction' by Springbok Nude Girls, 'Sand.Man.Sky.' by Sugardrive, and 'Civilized?' by Squeal. Three major big rock CDs. I still make regular orders, and the time waiting for the next CDs to arrive is spent listening to cool music.

But, to borrow a modern cliché, this isn't about me. It's about SA music, and the SA Rock Digest. These are good days to be a fan of South African rock, and I'm glad, nay: thrilled, to have watched and listened.

Of course, there is an diverse country behind these CDs, and good South
African friends have been made. I don't know enough to say for sure, but do you suppose South Africa could be the second most musically diverse nation on our Earth? Second only, perhaps (without being chauvinistic), to the larger USA?

Three years ago, Four Jacks and a Jill were my gateway to SA rock. A world, or worlds, opened up for me. While my collection is mostly SA rock, I also have township, kwela, Boeremusiek, folk, and other genres. Some of this SA music is wildly political, some pop and rock. All fun, all played regularly.

In the short time since I jumped into your creative music scene, I have gone from reading about the music made by such artists as The Dynamics, Dog Detachment, Suck, Falling Mirror, éVoid, Via Afrika, and others, to actually hearing them on Retro Fresh re-releases. Modern SA rock is equally wonderful music made by people and groups such as Piet Botha, Wonderboom, Karen Zoid, and many others.

So on this third birthday, I wish the SA Digest many more, and would like to thank everyone involved in SA music and in the Digest: the musicians, the fans, the editors and contributors.

Thanks y'all, and have a safe, happy, prosperous, and (SA) rocking new year!

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

AT HOME IN THE DARK - FINCH & HENSON (1980)

Finch & Henson are the Chas 'n Dave of South Africa, except much better. For those unfamiliar with Chas 'n Dave, they are an enduring duo that play a sort of knees up, Cockney styled pub rock. For those unfamiliar with Finch & Henson... where the hell have you been?

Although they have not endured as long as Chas 'n Dave, Finch & Henson made great country tinged rock music and were a popular pub band. Like Chas 'n Dave though, they were a duo.

On 'At Home in the Dark', the duo play some tight melodic relaxed rock. It's the kind of music you can turn up quite loud before parents may say 'would you mind turning that down a bit' rather than the 'will you shut that infernal racket up' associated with some rock music. Three of the tracks were recorded live at the Keg & Tankard in Pretoria, although other than some applause at the end of the tracks, you hardly notice a difference from the studio tracks, a compliment to the playing talent of the duo and the expert engineering of Ton Ten Teuling and Peter Hubner.

A few of the tracks from the album appear on the greatest hits CD 'Free and Easy', amongst them is the opening track of the album 'Lazy Woman' which is a Eagles style country rock song. Another one is 'Kokstad' (listed as 'On the Road' on the album) which is a great road song. One can almost feel the wind in your face as you cruise down the highway with this blaring from your car stereo.

I haven't yet heard Brian Finch's new solo album 'Hero of Heroes', but if this is anything to go by, it should be a treat. 'At Home in the Dark' is like an aural massage. It is gentle, yet it rocks, soothing, but solid. So sit back, relax and let this duo ease your troubles and for 40 odd minutes and treat you to some of the finest bar rock this side of the border.

It's not often that South Africa spotted musical genius before the UK,
however it took the Brits over 3 years before 'Imagine' managed to creep to number 6 in their charts and a further 5 years and the vicious murder of John Lennon before it topped the UK charts. Yet here in 1972 it was sitting at the top of the SA charts, and this despite his 'bigger than Jesus' comments.

The trio of SA hits, spearheaded by 'Mammy Blue' still clung to positions 3 to 5. In fact since dropping from it's record breaking stint at number 1, Charisma had clung to the number 3 spot for 3 weeks.

Barbra Streisand's 'Mother' (written by John Lennon) entered the top 10 while Tony Christie continued his roller coaster ride, by dropping this week to number 11. He had already made 2 sojourn's into the top 10. Tune in next week to see if he bounced back.

South Africans at number 1 this week:

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

One of SA's most successful compositions, 'Zambesi' (composed by Nico Carstens) was recorded by American Lou Busch, and entered the UK charts on 27th January 1956. It peaked at no 2 and spent 17 weeks in the charts. Trumpeter Eddie Calvert's version entered the UK charts a few weeks later on the 9 March and peaked at #13.

UK group, the Shadows, also recorded 'Zambesi' for their album 'Dance with the Shadows' in 1964. Another UK group, The Pirahnas, took 'Zambesi' to #17 on the UK charts in 1982.

The original version performed by Nico Carstens is now available on a new double CD compiled by Malcolm Lombard and Tertius Louw titled 'Lewenslied van Nico Carstens', GALLO CDREDD 674, Nov 2001.

LOKING FOR RALPH MARTIN

I am looking for Ralph Martin, former lead guitarist for Ballyhoo, etc.

He will know me as Bones, formerly from Despatch/Uitenhage from the days of Dark Custard and playing at the Roadhouse, and from Durban.

As I will be out of the country shortly, I would appreciate a reply before the end of January if possible.

Best wishes

LOOKING FOR CHART INFO

I've been looking at the listings for singles charted between 1969 and 1989, and the top 20's for the years before that. I am wondering whether you or anyone else has compiled a listing of ALL charted singles for the years 1959 to 1968? I am particularly interested in any records that may have charted for the Tamla Motown artists (Diana Ross, Supremes, etc), especially any hits that may be unique to S.A. (and I see a few in 1969-1989, like the two by Pat Boone's family, and "Behind Closed Doors" by Diana Ross, none of which made the U.S. pop Top 40).

This is for a potential CD project that I hope will be released by Motown/Universal Music in the U.S., comprising some of Motown's international (non-U.S.) hits. If you can provide assistance, or put me in touch with someone else who may have the info, that will be much appreciated (and please feel free to forward this request onto others if need be).

TRUE BLUE BLUES FESTIVAL
at the Libertas amphitheatre

1, 2, 3 March 2002
Friday and Sat eve: R60
Sunday Sundowner: R25 in the theatre, R10 on the lawn. Book at Computicket.

Featuring American blueswomen Saffire, South African and Stellenbosch artists. In these days of isolation by declining Rand value it should be considered a rare treat to be able to see a quality international band play the blues on our shores.

Saffire, or also known as the Uppity Blues Women, are sort of like an all women version of the Blues Broers. This three piece are all vocalists and utilise acoustic instruments: the piano, guitar, upright bass, mandolin, fiddle, harmonica and kazoo.

They have seven Alligator releases to their credit. Fun and super experienced exponents of the blues indeed. They will perform the Friday and Saturday evenings with various South African groupings in the opening slots.

Support in the form of local players Larry Amos, Willem Fourie, Blues Broers, Delta Blue, Albert Frost and Gerald Clark makes for a fairly mini blues festival feel. They will all converge to make for a truly great event at the magnificent Oude Libertas Amphitheatre on the Sunday evening Sundowners concert.

Both the casual listener and avid blues aficionado will be mesmerized as well as pleasantly entertained by these wonderful artists at a venue that allows both thoughtful appreciation of the concert as well as simple outdoors entertainment.

Programme:
Friday
Gerald Clark (Delta Blue) & Albert Frost (Frosted Orange) and members of the two groups combined.

Outstanding vocalist from Delta Blue teams up with blues guitar supremo from Frosted Orange and Blues Broers. Together they will trace the history of the blues through interpretations of early great Robert Johnson and other poplar standards. From these acoustic roots they will move on to their own modern variations on the blues theme.

Saffire set 1

Saturday
Willem Fourie & Larry Amos.

Johannesburg maestro Larry Amos is a veteran player of the blues. As guitarist and vocalist he is without peer, and perfectly matched by the powerful sounds of Willem Fourie (ex Cape Town bands like Southern Blue & Southern Blues Band). They bring an African feel to the blues by performing songs from their 'Amakoeloe' project as well as honed and crafted but passionate renditions of lesser heard standards as well as their own compositions.

Saffire set 2

Sunday
Delta Blue & Blues Broers plus guest and all-star Superjam:

The new kids on the blues block and the veterans presents the best in local blues. Blues Broers has been the statesmen for the blues in the Cape for more than a decade, and some of their members have been playing the blues for much longer. Delta Blue is currently one of the hottest exponents of modern blues-rock, and they are also much loved for their wonderful renditions of well liked standards. These individual talents and contributions by ace guitarists Larry Amos and Willem Fourie and other guest musicians makes this combination of bands a fitting encore to the weekends festival.

Johann Kotze, producer of the mini festival.

NOT THE MIDNIGHT MASS

Surely the most important date on any Midnight Mass fan's calander for this is the date of the long awaited Live recording of the NTMM LIVE AT THE PLANETARIUM CD and there are only 240 tickets available over 2 performances to be held on Sunday 10th Feb, first show @6pm and the second @ 9pm.The venue is of course the Cape Town Planetarium, Queen Victoria Street, Gardens. Tickets sell at R110.00 and those who attend the performances will entitled to a free!, autographed! copy of the CD, on it's release in March 2002. You can obtain tickets in one of the following ways:

a) by going to computicket or b) through any of the members of the Mass.

The planetarium was chosen because of the splendid acoustics while the night sky and huge telescope make a beautiful setting. The recordings will be engineered and mixed by Kieth Davies assisted by Akbar Kahn. These two sound wizards were responsible for recording the highly successful Steve Newman/Tony Cox album in the same venue last year so you can expect a CD of the highest quality. Roger Lucey (from ETV) will film the event for a possible DVD release later.

There will be a cash bar so that a jolly mood might prevail.

Ask youself "Can I as a fan of the mass afford to miss this once in a lifetime expierience?" OF COURSE YOU CAN'T!!!

4-9th MARCH 2002

NTMM perform their popular show "Defrocked" At the Oude Libertas open air theatre in Stellenbosch for 6 performances only.

WONDER GIGS PART 3

Tribe is a low profile, highly skilled four-piece jazz group that has
been steadily accumulating devoted followers to their original sound and compositions. Saturday night saw them recording the second in the
‘Wonder Gig’ series of live performances, in front of a capacity and
enthusiastic audience at the Beach Road Studios in Sea Point.

Next up (Sat Feb 2), at the same venue, is an adventurous collaboration
between Alex Van Heerden, the enigmatically Chet-like trumpeter and
accordion player from Gramadoelas, and a string quartet, led by the
classically trained and Indian master- inspired Derek Gripper. Iain
Harris and Struan Douglas, who masterminded these concerts, are
confident that this unusual combination will produce an exciting new
sound by merging Van Heerden’s ghoema spark, jazz enthusiasm and trancey licks with the sobriety and delicacy of a string quartet.
