BAABA MAAL TO VISIT SA

Senegalese world music superstar, Baaba Maal, will be breezing into SA
after his USA tour (LA, San Francisco and Chicago) to play at the Spier
Festival in Cape Town.

Maal’s new studio album, ‘Missing You (Mi Yeewni)’, was released by
Sheer/Palm Pictures last year and is a follow up to ‘98’s ‘Nomad Soul’
CD and ‘99’s ‘Live At The Royal Festival Hall’ DVD. His previous two
albums - ‘Firin’ in Fouta’ and ‘Nomad Soul’ - also earned fantastic
reviews and enriched an already stupendous stage show.

As Baaba Maal tours the world, he does so also as a representative of
the United Nations Development Programme speaking out on the issue of HIV/Aids in Africa. Both elements come together when Maal features in musical projects such as ‘Red Hot and Gershwin’ and the imminent Fela Kuti Tribute ‘Red Hot and Riot’, both put together by the HIV/Aids awareness campaign group, the Red Hot Organisation.

Baaba Maal's itinerary:
Feb 13, 15 & 16 - Spier Festival, Stellenbosch

MUTTZ NUTTZ LOOZE VOIZE

Over the past 12 months, Muttz Nuttz have emerged as one of the hottest
new bands on the SA music scene. Their successes during 2001 include
recording a four-track demo, making it through to the semi-finals of the Emerging Sounds Battle of the Bands competition, having ‘Hey Charlotte’ go to No. 1 on the Powerzone Top 40, and playing at the Druiwefees in Nylstroom.

Sta-Shaun, the band’s lead vocalist, recently announced he will be
leaving the outfit. But all is not over for the rest of the Muttz Nuttz
crew - already there are a couple of auditions lined up to find a new
vocalist up to the task of belting out the band’s trademark high-energy
rock. Once they are up and running, plans for this year include playing
the major festivals, recording an album and touring as much of South
Africa as is possible.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

BLIND PERCEPTION - FUDGE

'Blind Perception' is the debut full album from Fudge, the young
Cape-based rap-metal trio which was formed in June 1999. Their first
release was the impressive six-track EP, 'Keeping it Real' in 2000 which produced the hit single 'U Are Not What You Are'.

The band's three members - brothers Francois Marais (g.v) and Jean
Marais (d), and Donovan Tose (b.bv) all attended the Worcester Pioneer
School (for the visually impaired) where they began jamming and
eventually formalised their union under the name Fudge in 2000. Jean is
14 years old and is completely blind. Francois and Donovan are both 19
and have barely 10% and 20% vision respectively. Jean still attends the
school while Donovan and Francois completed matric in 2000.

The band's music has been grabbing the attention of local
fellow-devotees of power-rock US bands like Limp Bizkit, Deftones, and
Korn. Their latest CD, the hard-hitting, 13-track 'Blind Perception' was recorded in June 2001. Apart from the ten explosive studio-recorded
tracks, the CD has some other interesting surprises. There are two
energetic live recordings, a guest vocal appearance by T.G. Van Zyl from the band Antipathy, a collaboration with Hip-Hop group Ram Clam, and a remix.

'Hide And Seek', one of the songs off the album, has been chosen to
feature on a Extreme Sports Video, made by Sub Gravity Productions and
released internationally. The video, which also features international
bands like Gray Race Evolution, and some other local talents like Not
My Dog and Hog Hoggidy Hog. But till that happens, the band are happy to work the lucrative and well-supported Western Cape hardcore grunge circuit.

current nationwide tour as support for Tree63. The album is released on
the Sheer Sound label and was recorded with the Modena City Ramblers, an Italian group with a strong Celtic influence. The two groups met and
collaborated at the Standard Bank Awesome Africa music festival 2000, so ‘Lontano’ will also be released (and, at a later stage, launched) in
Italy.

Those Tree63 & Landscape Prayers dates are:
Feb 8 - Carnival City

Feb 21 - the PE Opera House
Feb 23 - Ratanga Junction in Cape Town

Tickets are R55 throughout for all gigs and can be booked in advance @
Computicket 011 340 8000.

-------------------

THE SUMMER EYE - BLACKMILK

Debut album from a band that has been gaining a strong reputation on the Cape Town underground rock circuit. Includes the first single ‘Goodbye Satellite’, and other flavoured milkshakes like ‘Incisor Comb’, ‘This Is Night’ and ‘Solar Perplexus’. On ‘The Summer Eye’, with its gloomy, dark vocals, surreal guitar and synthesiser textures, and rolling Cape rock sound, blackmilk resemble a kind of SpringGoth Nude Girls. Darkly bright like the band’s name says. (LM)

------------------

ODD TIMES - SONS OF TROUT

Back into the SA spotlight spring the perky lads from Sons Of Trout, a
band that has been working and playing really hard over the past five
years of their musical existence (over 400 gigs performed!). They
haven’t yet quite managed to move into the Nude Girls/Just Jinger
popularity bracket. But their new album ‘Odd Times’, their third after
‘Take Me To Your Fishmonger’ and ‘Ticks On George’, and first on the
SAFm label, could just be the one to give them that upward push. It is
possibly the strongest of the three and has more of a balanced feel to
it then the previous two offerings.

The band’s core line-up - Mike Hardy (v.sax), Jason Rosenstein (d), Mark Noak (g), Nick Turner (v.g), and Mike Rennie (v.vio) - is still intact and as energetic as ever. Their collective experience and enthusiasm is evident and infectious, and the band has supported Hootie and the Blowfish, Johnny Clegg and Savuka, and graced every stage and major festival in South Africa.

‘Odd Times’ features 13 new, original musical adventures from these
folk-funkers with titles like ‘(021)’, ‘Extra Lorry’, the bouncy
‘2Face’, and their Steely Dan pastiche ‘Hollywood’, that features a
spot-on vocal contribution from Tasha Baxter. As always there’s bounce
and cheek all over the album, reflecting the band’s well-known optimism
and unquenchable sense of fun.

See the Sons of Trout at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concert on 3rd March.

SCICOUSTIC CD LAUNCH

New SA group, Scicoustic, are led by songwriter and guitarist Albert
Meintjes who is backed by his brother, Gideon Meintjes, on drums. The
other members are percussionist Jako Loots and bassist Mike Roy. Over
the past year, Scicoustic did an extensive tour with the group Duusman
in March and April 2001, playing venues in Cape Town, Stellenbosch and
Mossel Bay. The band also impressed with a first appearance at the
Klein Karoo National Arts Festival, and performed at Oppikoppi, Splashy
Fen and the Aardklop Festival in Potchefstroom. In December 2001 they
toured with Henry Ate and played packed houses in Knysna, Plettenberg
Bay and Hermanus.

2002 sees a tour and numerous performances at KKNK, this time getting a
slot on the big Kaktus stage. The album ‘Mirrors’, was recorded at the Wolmer Studios, produced and arranged by Scicoustic and Lanie v/d Walt, and recorded and mixed by Albert Meintjes and Lanie v/d Walt. The album contains eleven tracks of which two are already featuring on the TUKS FM charts. The first single, ‘Assassin’, reached No. 1 on the TUKS FM top ten, and spent a total of sixteen weeks on the charts. The second single, ‘Bolshie Woman’, has been on the charts for three weeks and is currently at No. 5, and still climbing.

The ‘Mirrors’ launch takes place at Tings & Times, Hatfield, Pretoria on 12 February 2002. The program will consist of DJ Bob (206) manning the decks before and after Scicoustic hits the stage. ‘Mirrors’ will be on sale at a special reduced rate for this one night only.

Furthermore, you can win tickets to the Tuks Rag, starting February 13
where Scicoustic will once again be performing on Friday 15 February.
Make sure to listen to TUKS FM on Simon Frost’s Sundowner 6-9 show on 4, 6, 8 & 11 February, and stand the chance to win copies of ‘Mirrors’ and tickets to the launch. Scicoustic will be interviewed on the same show on February 11.

THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED

Don McLean (and more recently Madonna) sing about the day the music died in the classic song 'American Pie'. Well, when was that exactly? It was the 3rd of February 1959 when the light aircraft carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper (Jiles Perry "JP" Richardson) crashed killing all on board.

SHILOH'S CORNER

WISHBONE ASH pioneers of the twin tone lead
Part 1

Torquay, Devon, England in the summer of 1969 were regularly entertained by two outstanding musicians, Martin Turner and Steve Upton, then known as the Empty Vessels. These vessels were soon to be filled up by the Harmony Twins, Andy Powell and Ted Turner (no relation). The spiritual and creative energy of this magnificent foursome immediately impressed MCA Records who signed them up in 1970. Their eponymous debut album (1970) reached the UK top 40 even though it expounded ten minute improvisation as experienced on the quintessential "Phoenix" and "Handy".

The group were clearly not looking for any hit singles, but it was their extravagant live performances that accrued a large following in the UK and across the waters. Their twin lead guitar sound has often been described as England's answer to the Allman Brothers/Lynyrd Skynyrd. The strength of Wishbone Ash was their mystical lyrical element combined with a fine fusion of harmony and well toned electric lead. The harmony of "Errors of my way" off the debut album likened to "Valediction" off their 1972 "Pilgrimage" album filter a sound of a group that could aggressively embrace raging rock guitar and in the next instant whisper stories of another world.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

KONGOS - JOHN KONGOS

It's John Kongos here, not Johnny. There are no G-Men, and not a mermaid to be seen.

This appears to be the album called 'John Kongos' in the 'History of Contemporary Music Of South Africa' book (TOGA 1994), and called 'Kongos' in the CD's liner notes. Both cite the label and the release date and label as Pye, 1971, so I assume (always dangerous, right?) this CD with bonus tracks to be that album. I call it Mature John Kongos Music.

Of the eighteen tracks, the first ten are the album 'Kongos'. The eight
bonus tracks are A and B sides of single releases from 1971-1975, including the single version of the hit 'Tokoloshe Man'.

Some of the songs have Lennon-esque vocals reminiscent of Lennon's later solo work (especially his primal therapy-influenced singing), though these Kongos-songs were recorded before John Lennon released his two best-known solo albums. Also, Kongos' singing is more controlled than Lennon's 'Cold Turkey' screaming.

So what about the music? Not a bad song here, the worst any gets is
innocuous. Eight songs jump out at me, and these are evenly distributed
among the album and bonus tracks.

I don't think anyone could not enjoy 'Tokoloshe Man' (which reached SA #13) and 'He's Gonna Step On You Again' (SA #2). The first has a rich electric guitar, and the second is a real stomper -- wordplay intended. {Both tracks reached the number 4 spot on the UK charts in 1971, and the Happy Mondays covered 'He's Gonna Step On You Again' as 'Step On' and took it UK #5 in 1990 - ed}

For the others, 'Weekend Lady', 'Sometimes It's Not Enough', 'Great White Lady', 'Shamarack', and 'Higher Than God's Hat' by reason of some melodic flair, rhythmic twist, lyrical quality, all merit repeated listening.

Speaking of the lyrics, sure, there are some Love Ya Honey girl-boy songs here, but there are others that deal with issues of the Seventies and today -- revolution, racism, the individual in society, and so on. Combined with the prime music and musicianship, that's why I call this Mature John Kongos Music.

Do I enjoy this album? Yup. Where'd I get it? Amazon.com, though
Amazon.co.uk has it, too. (It was made in Germany.)

How much do I like it? Enough to order 'Lavender Popcorn' from Amazon (as an import -- it's also available at Amazon.co.uk), in the belief that my collection is not complete without a career retrospective of the various bands Kongos had been in prior to 1970. Not a track is duplicated between the CDs, either. Add my G-Men LP and I've plenty of Johnny Kongos tunes to enjoy.

From Johnny Kongos and the G-Men to 'Kongos' -- John is a
poly-instrumentalist whose work is worth listening to in all phases of his rocking life, from mermaids in the sea to the Tokoloshe under your beds.

Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas
mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com

{'Lavender Popcorn' is a a retrospective CD of Johnny Kongos from 1966 to 1969. It is the whole of the psych-pop 'Confusions about a Goldfish' album from 1969, plus tracks by John T Kongos, Floribunda Rose and Scrugg. Released on Sanctuary Records in the UK, distributed in SA by Sony Music... happy hunting - ed}

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

DEUR DIE DONKER VALLEI - VALIANT SWART

A wise man once said to me that 'Deur die Donker Vallei' by Valiant Swart was the best Afrikaans Rock album ever. Later in the same conversation, the same wise man admitted that he had had too much to drink. At this point I recalled the old adage 'In vino vertitas' or perhaps I should have thought 'In vino veri-tassenberg' as it was of that famous fruit of the vine that the wise man had partaken. The other thing that persuaded me to seek out this album was that the wise man was none other than Koos Kombuis.

I must say Oom Koos, that I agree wholeheartedly with you. 'Donker Vallei' finds the mystic one at his soul baring bluesy best, creating 12 lovingly crafted songs of love, loneliness, lost love, just cruising or at times about being pissed off or if you look a bit closer, there's a definite political slant to them. As the title suggests, it's not a happy album, but it is also not a 'oh woe is me' album. Apparently this album was made at a time when Valiant had just broken off a relationship. Although I haven't had that confirmed, the lyrics do tend to suggest a man coming to terms with lost love and finding solace in being alone and on the road. There's a sensitiveness and openness about this that is quite disarming but comforting at the same time.

Musically it's Valiant's beloved blues that dominate, but there's a healthy dose of country rock and in the case of 'Die vloek van die Kitaar', a good old blast of unadulterated rock. The band's playing is superb throughout, and the awesome blues guitar contribution of Albert Frost is enough to send shivers down your spine.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump, this album is like a box of chocolates, you like all of them, but every one has their own favourite. It's not easy to choose a favourite amongst this quality selection as they're all so darn lekker, but at a push I would say my favourite is 'Gange van Babylon' a song that flows so smoothly and melancholically through your speakers that you can't help but be engulfed by it {My favourite is 'Banneling' (The Exile), in case you were wondering - ed}.

While there have been a large number of quality Afrikaans Rock albums of late, this one still comes out tops for me and is never far from my CD player. So Koos Kombuis I take my velhoed off to you for your choice of album, and those of you who have ever wondered where Eminem and his homies in D12 got the idea for their song 'Purple Hills' check out the cover of this quite special album.

Die Mystic Boer will be performing a couple of acoustic gigs in London this week:

It was the second week in a row at the top for the ex-Beatle, although one could not ignore the threat Middle of the Road still posed. The trio of South African top 10 hits had been split up, but had all maintained their top 10 status.

Tony Christie's 'Amarillo' made it's third re-appearance in the top 10. This time it was at the expense of Danyel Gerard and his 'Butterfly'. Barbra Streisand (who always insisted on spelling her name without the extra "a") was making good progress toward the top spot with 'Mother'. This was a cover version of John Lennon's song that had appeared on his 'primal scream' album 'Plastic Ono Band' which had been released 2 years early.

Lower down the charts, there were 3 new entries into the top 20. Melanie's 'Brand New Key', 'Banks of the Ohio' by Olivia Newton-John and 'Dancing in the Sun' by Michael Holm. John Kongos clung to the top 20 with 'Tokoloshe Man' dropping from 18 to 20. It was the song's 7th week in the top 20, but hadn't ventured higher than 16, a rather disappointing reception for the local lad who had taken this tune to number 4 in the UK.

LOOKING FOR MUSIC FRIENDS

First of all mega sorry for my bad English, but please believe me, I'm still learn it (I have nice teacher. Her name is Rosa and she is from... South Africa). Well, maybe something about me. My name is Artur and I live in Poland.

I'm 36 years old and I love music. I have a lot of pals around the world, but I don't have any person from your country. My deepest dream is to find someone who would like to write me something about South African music (I'm into music from 60's and 70's. Like the Beatles, Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd. In five words I love: beat, psychodelic, progressive and hard-rock music.

Of course I'd like to write to this person some about music from Poland and other ex-comunistic countries from Europe. I think that it's very exotic music for all music fans from S.A. Like your music is exotic for me. I also think about trade music. I'm looking for your help.

LOOKING FOR IMPI

Hi! I'm searching for an instrumental song of John Kongos, the title is: Impi, the year; 1982. I have this song on an old vinyl, 12 inch (maybe a club version). I don't know on which album (cd) I can find it. On this vinyl, it's the same title on each side but different version. It's like "african rhythm". Can you help me?

Thank you.

AILEEN THE ALIEN

Here's one for the rock Trivia boys.

Who is 'Aileen' on Freedom's Children's album 'Astra'?

I'm really curious to know. She's one of those ethereal mysteries, like Jennifer Eccles, Alice Long, Eleanor Rigby.... the list is endless.

COUNTRY MUSIC VENUES

I have a request.. do you know any venues in the Cape Town area that play country music? Boy, is that a swearword is this country and in Cape Town it is almost unmentionable. However there is so much good alternative country music coming out of the States which I really enjoy playing but have not been able to find a suitable venue...

Tks I'd appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

SUI SESSIONS II - BENGUELA LIVE AT SUI STUDIOS

Following on from the hugely successful inaugural live-recorded sessions with blackmilk late last year, comes a real treat in the form of Cape Town based trio, Benguela. Brydon, Ross and Alex have just released their second album, ‘Digital Inability’, which is already causing quite a buzz among loyal followers and new fans alike:

Come witness their chemistry as caressed, plucked, bowed and scraped
upright bass meshes with spellbinding guitar and kinetic drumming. With
every Benguela gig being a unique experience due to its partly
improvised nature, it's a rare honour to be able to document the event
by recording it.

As we like to combine these musical occasions with some form of visual
art, we can tell you that ace photographer Brandon Wood will have some
choice snaps on display as well. So, do not delay, as seating is
limited. We advise that you contact either of the above numbers or email address to reserve your ticket if you do not want to be disappointed.

HEATHER MAC ADDED TO UP THE CREEK BILL

Some additions at the eleventh hour have been added to the Up The Creek
line-up, just to keep things interesting! The 2002 Savanna Up The Creek
festival, from 8-10 February, is proud to announce that Heather Mac will be appearing live on Saturday 9th February, as will the positively
eclectic Jam Mecca from Knysna, and that Sole Affair has been added to
the Sunday line-up. Since her days as the lead singer for the hugely
influential Ella Mental, Heather Mac has been pretty quiet, but that
doesn’t mean she has been doing nothing! This is your chance to see this hugely talented singer in action again, if you have been missing her for the last few years.

Jam Mecca bring an almost indescribable amalgam of musical sounds to
the stage, incorporating jazz, reggae, world music and more into the
unique blend of sounds. And Sole Affair add to the general jazzy feel of our laid back, recovery Sunday line-up.

Cape Town trio Frosted Orange are on their way to Gauteng to play a series of shows in Johannesburg and Pretoria. They describe their music as a blend of blues and indie rock, "Imagine B.B. King playing with Radiohead," says keyboard player Simon Orange.

Orange formed the band with guitar player Albert Frost in 1995 and they performed as a duo until they met drummer Jacques Schutter in Stellenbosch in 1999. Since then they've become a cult favourite at festivals and shows, with their razor-sharp outfits and laid back attitude.

The band takes great pleasure in announcing the imminent release of their second album, entitled "My Love is a Leopard", which is currently being manufactured in Johannesburg. A collaboration between Capetone Records (the band's own label) and Albert Du Plessis' Rhythm Records, it features ten new tracks drenched in Rhodes piano and electric guitar and was recorded at Stellenbosch's Sunset Studios last year.

TUKS JOOL 2002

Tuks Jool and Oppikoppi Productions have joined forces for the first
time to bring you a new and funkier Jool Concert for 2002. As in the
past, this event takes place over four days, from 13-16 Feb 2002.
Vodacom hosts the Amphitheatre Stage, with Black Label providing the
second "Gig-rig" stage, each sporting many different genres of music and unique South African talents. The Oppikoppi production team is hard at work to make sure that both stages receive top-class treatment and the best in sound and lighting gear.

Tuks Jool 2002 kicks off on Wed 13 February with the Gospel Rock Show.
After an extremely successful evening at Jool 2001, the lineup grows
stronger this year, featuring some awesome Gospel bands from around the
country (See below). The following acts have been confirmed for Thursday 14th (Valentine’s Day) and Friday 15th of February:

Vodacom Amphitheatre Stage: BLK Sonshine, Perez, Skwatta Kamp, The
Blunted Stuntman (206), Karma, Valiant Swart, Watershed, Bongo Maffin, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Max Normal, Not My Dog, Politburo Session, Scicoustic, Soil 7T7

Black Label Gig-rig Stage: Citrus, Dj Bubbles, Dj Myles, Slugs Of War,
Tidal Waves, This Way Out, Anika, Beeskraal, Dj Fresh (YFM), Krushed &
Sorted, Paul Riekert & Anton L’Amour, Guage

On Saturday 16th, the Rag Procession takes place, culminating with a
street party in Hatfield. Watch the press for more details about the
goings on in Burnett Street. Besides the Rag Show, the Tuks Rag
committee busies itself with various charity projects and fundraisers
for lesser privileged folk all year round. This year’s concert promises
to be more indicative of the rapidly growing music scene in our country, with all sorts of artists and other joolers pulling together to make it a memorable event.

Be warned that Pretoria has never before experienced a Jool such as
this, with more than 30 bands and dj’s entertaining you over the
four-day period.

Couvert charge for the events:
Wed 13th: R20, from 15:00
Thur 14th: R30 from 15:00
Fri 15th: R30 from 15:00

NOTE: No alchohol or weapons may be brought onto the premises. Full bar facilities will be available throughout the show. Additional info can be obtained from 082 321 8113 or visit our website at
www.oppikoppi.co.za/tuksjool.

TUKS JOOL’S GOSPEL SHOW

In 2001, TUKS JOOL saw the need for a night where Christians could enjoy JOOL according to their needs. They set the project and reaped major success. The Wednesday night will never be forgotten. Now the challenge lies ahead to build on that success in the years to come and a challenge it will be.

In 2002 TUKS JOOL is preparing for that challenge. This line-up was
formed to take the Gospel Rock Show to another standard. Tree63 and
Peculiar People from Cape Town will lead the pack of 8 bands. One80 is a band that is growing super fast, especially with the launch of their
album ‘Intoxication’. 5 Star Society, Light Box, C-Kruis Music,
Blindgait and Metanoya will provide the balance to local and upcoming.

The Gospel Rock Show will be hosted at the Ragfarm on the University
sports grounds. The event will start not a second later than 5pm and the King of Kings will be glorified until 11pm on Wednesday 13 February
2002. This might be the last chance to experience such a line-up for
only R20. Don’t dare to be young and miss this!!!
