‘SUGAR MAN’ IS GETTING AROUND

There have been two major sightings of the classic Rodriguez song ‘Sugar Man’ on the international music landscape over the past few weeks. The first is the unaccredited appearance of both the song’s melody line, and a sample of Rodriguez singing the words "sugar man", on the track ‘You’re Da Man’ off ‘Stillmatic’, the latest album by US rap star, Nas. In the context of the song’s chorus, it is easy for anyone who has never heard ‘Sugar Man’ before, to mis-hear the words "sugar man" as "you’re da man".

However no credit has been given to Rodriguez (the song’s composer) or
to Interior Music (the song’s publishers) on the album’s sleeve, so it
is unlikely that these samples were licensed for usage on this album. If that is the situation, then Rodriguez and Interior Music could be
looking at a claim along the lines of that which cost UK group The Verve a bundle, when they used an obscure Stones/Loog Oldham sample for their ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ mega-hit. ‘Stillmatic’ is currently sitting at No. 11 on the Billboard Album charts, having racked up sales of over a million copies in the past eight weeks.

Across the pond (as they say), ‘Sugar Man’ has been selected by UK music man David Holmes, to open his upcoming CD collection of ‘60’s and ‘70’s cult classics, due for a UK release next month. Holmes recently worked on the soundtrack for the remake of the Rat Pack flick, ‘Oceans Eleven’, starring George Clooney (Holmes also compiled the soundtrack for the Clooney/Jennifer Lopez film ‘Out Of Sight’).

Holmes will be releasing this new mix album, entitled 'Come Get It I Got It’, on March 25th in the UK. The album is his second officially
released "live" mix album, and will be available through his 13 AMP
record label. This album has already been mentioned in articles in the
NME (with full tracklisting), and in The Face magazine, where the song
‘Sugar Man’ got a special mention and a Dylan comparison. Holmes’
previous compilation album from 2000, titled ‘Bow Down To The Exit
Sign’, was described as "a mixed cassette tape made by someone who has
the coolest record collection".

So the Rodriguez word is spreading, even in his hometown of Detroit,
where a recent unexpected live appearance at a local street party,
brought him closer to the general attention of that city’s music media
and fans. A possible trip to London for some live performances is being
considered, and this new exposure could see that happening later this
year. Interest in Rodriguez in the UK and Europe has been growing
steadily over the past few years, always helped no doubt by the many
South African and Australians currently living in London and other major Euro centres.

Yet the strange fact is that the ‘Cold Fact’ CD is still only available, anywhere in the world, as an Australian import on the Blue Goose label. That’s also quite "Nas-ty", don’t you think? (SS)

FAITHLESS IN SA

British group Faithless will be returning to SA in late April for three
concerts as part of its upcoming world tour. The group, featuring Maxi
Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo Armstrong (Dido’s boet), will be performing in Gauteng, Durban and finishing at the Belville Velodrome in Cape Town on April 20. Faithless released their successful third album, ‘Outrospective’, in 2001, building on the success of their previous two hit albums, ‘Reverence’ and ‘Sunday 8PM’. The group last appeared in SA a few years back on the same bill as The Prodigy.

Tickets from Computicket.

ROGER WATERS CONCERT NEWS
Big Concerts write...

There’s definitely no truth to the rumour that tickets for this
legendary show are sold out. Close, but not yet! Limited tickets are
still available for both the Cape Town and Johannesburg shows. With only days to go before Pink Floyd founder and former bassist Roger Waters rocks South African audiences, those without tickets are fast running out of time to catch this musical legend live in action.

Roger Waters is returning to the stage for his first World Tour since he retired from Pink Floyd in 1983. He has rediscovered the love of being on stage and performing. Waters will be performing a cross-section of tracks from ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’ and ‘The Wall’, to his solo albums, ‘The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking’ and ‘Amused To Death’. Fans attending the concerts will be treated to the signature Pink Floyd show effects with a surreal video, sound and light show throughout. The show utilises elaborate large-scale video projections to create surreal twists, effects and psychedelic graphics featuring many of the iconic images from throughout Waters' illustrious 35-year career, such as flying pigs, brick walls, crossed hammers, and the prism and the rainbow.

Tour Itinerary:
Wednesday, 27th February Bellville Velodrome, Cape Town - Show time
20h00 - 23h00
Friday, 1st March Dome @ Northgate, Randburg - Show time 19h00 - 22h00

SEETHER CHANGE LINE-UP

Top SA rock band Seether (neé Saron Gas) is currently undergoing a
line-up change, less than two months into the band’s international
career. Seether signed to Wind Up Records in 2001 and the trio is
currently in New York working on the recording of the upcoming
(untitled) new album.

The change of line-up involves drummer, David Cohoe, who returned to
South Africa last week due to "family commitments". The band will be
sourcing a new drummer to join the band in the US, prior to the album’s
release in June 2002. Seether will begin a nationwide tour of the US in
early May.

----------------

STARSKII OFF ON TOUR

Starskii have announced the dates of their first major tour to promote
their excellent debut album, ‘Communate’. The Starskii Freedom Tour will run from Feb through to March and the band will be performing free
entrance acoustic shows at certain venues along the way. ‘Communate' has already topped the SA Rock Digest charts, and the second single,
‘Ecstacy’, reached No.2, not quite as good as ‘Did You See It Coming?’,
the first single off the album, which reached No 1.

See the "Rock On" section below for a full gig listing.

INTERVENTION ARTS NEWS

THE AWAKENING - South Africa's top Goth band will be doing one of their
last Gauteng performances for several months at Zeplins in Pretoria on
Friday 1 March. Guest DJs, the full six-piece line-up, a massive Dark
Alternative CD stall selling top local and international fringe music
and all the usual festivities you have come to know and love at
Awakening performances can be expected. The Awakening's most recent
single, ‘Martyr’ just peaked at No. 4 on the 5fm Modern Rock Chart, and
singles from ‘The Fountain’ and ‘The Fourth Seal of Zeen’ are currently
on high rotation playlisting at Exile nightclub in London and on Radio
Vision in Norway.

SILEX - These rising stars of SA Gothic Rock are launching their debut
album through Intervention Arts at Zeplins in Pretoria on Saturday 9
March. If you've not yet seen this dynamic and thrillingly dark outfit
perform, do yourself a favour and be at the launch of ‘Legendary
Beauty’, their debut album, produced by Ashton Nyte. If you have seen
Silex before, there is no doubt that you will be there. ‘Legendary
Beauty’ is an epic journey through hard-edged beautiful soundscapes that are as dark and disturbing, as they are poetic and spiritual.

FOUR OUNCE FREEDOM - South Africa's new hardcore superstars have been
adding to their already formidable reputation with a series of live and
radio successes. After playing a prime-time slot at the Rock Against
Rape II concert alongside the likes of Tweak, Cutting Jade and The
Awakening, Four Ounce Freedom have also been receiving high-rotation
playlisting on Matie FM, UCT Radio, a special feature on 5FM's Fanta
World Chart Show and Radio Oranje (OFM)'s Top 20. Their first single,
‘Today’, reached No. 1 on Tuks FM's SA Top 10 and No. 10 on their
international Top 30. Die Burger newspaper in the Cape has given their
album, ‘Hypnotism’ 5 out of 5 stars and many other glowing reviews are
in the pipeline. This is a band to watch. {Yeah, we like them too, see
charts below - ed}

3RD EAR NEWS

Good news from Durban is that The Blue Bottles is NOT closing down (it
was only a rumour) - only the Sunday Music evenings will cease. Sunday
24th Feb is the last music Sunday until further notice and will feature
Lilo unplugged. Lilo are an alt-country/rock band made up of four
delinquent Durbanites - Alexander Sudheim, Graeme Barnes, Dean Henning
and Michael Whitehead - whose new album, ‘Light Me A Lucifer’ has now
been released.

Alexander Sudheim writes and sings the songs while Graeme "Bottleneck"
Barnes is king of the heartbreak slide guitar. Dean Henning hits the
skins and Michael Whitehead provides the rocksteady bass. Lilo’s songs
are slanted stories and poems of an occasionally x-rated nature, telling of life, lust, love, and death in personal yet unsentimental fashion. The music of Lilo could vaguely be described as "cyanide-centred, caramel-flavoured eroded rockdust anthems". Richard Haslop described the band’s album, ‘Light Me A Lucifer’ as "one of the most interesting South African rock albums of the century".

Dave "Plod" Tarr's Tribute Concert, on Saturday February 16th, was a
wonderful affair at the best kept secret venue in Durban: The Dumarc
Theatre in Springfield Park. It is a wonderful spot, full-on theatre on
two levels, with all the technical and reclining bits and pieces
imaginable. Ken E Henson and friends organised a great event. Kevin Tarr (Dave's brother) was there with hundreds of David's friends who just played and talked and reminisced about one of this country's great
musicians.

The artists apppearing - Wills Blues Band, Sippies, Salty Dog, Syd
Kitchen, Dave Birch, Nibs v.d. Spuy, Brooklyn, Ken E Henson, Richard
Ellis, Scooters Union, Steve Fataar, DAD (David Marks, Alan Judd and Dan Chiorboli) and others, kept going until the late (early?) hours. Len Downing put in a solo appearance with a marvellous rendition of
‘Georgia’, the only song that Plod ever sung in public.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

THE FOUNTAIN - THE AWAKENING (Intervention Arts)

I first heard the song 'Martyr' on Barney Simon's show one night on 5FM, and I thought to myself "nice new David Bowie song". When I found out it was actually Ashton Nyte's alter-ego band The Awakening, I thought "hmmm, Bowie but better..."

'Martyr' is an uptempo and bouncy song (or as bouncy as a Goth song can be), with wonderful piano and a catchy chorus ("perfect martyr for me, perfect martyr for you..."). Ashton's deep and dark voice even manages to soar in places. I was hooked and soon had my hands on 'The Fountain' 7-track CD.

I'm not a great Goth fan (its the clothes, I think), but besides the superb 'Martyr', this CD also has some other great moments. 'The New Renaissance', the slow and powerful 'Asrya' and the Depravity Remix of the title track, with its Mike Garson-type manic piano, are all outstanding. There is also a live piano version of 'Amethyst' which was a track on the 'The Fourth Seal Of Zeen' CD released about a year ago.
If your taste runs towards The Mission, No Friends Of Harry, Sisters Of Mercy and David Bowie (his voice, more than his music) then The Awakening is definitely for you. Ashton implores us to "fly the flag of the new Renaissance" and we have no reason to doubt his sincerity.

PIET BOTHA - MAN MET KITAAR (EMI)

Piet will be going into the studio in April to record his new album, 'Man Met Kitaar'. This will be his 3rd solo studio album, following 'Suitcase Vol Winter' (1997) and 'Jan Skopgraaf' (1999). Piet his given us some ideas to the song titles, though these are not yet 100% confirmed; 'Die Som Kom Weer', 'Somer', 'Kitty', 'Warmheuning', 'Kitchener' (about Lord Kitchener), 'Man Met Kitaar' & 'Die Man In Die Maan' (no relation to Ballyhoo's 'Man In The Moon').

If the 3 new songs that appeared on 'Die Hits' album released in October 2001 by EMI are anything to go by, we can expect more powerful and thought-provoking songs about life, the ghosts that haunt us and South African history from the man with the deep, soul-stirring voice.

Win a copy of Piet Botha's recent compilation CD, 'Die Hits' (The Hits), thanks to EMI. Just name the 3 new songs ("die nuwe hits") that appear on 'Die Hits' compilation CD released last year. Answers to: mailto:brian@sarockdigest.com?Subject=PietBotha

NO REGRETS - KEVIN DUKE

Kevin Duke’s tasty little folk-blues-rock debut solo album, ‘No
Regrets’, arrived last year but is only now gaining the interest it
deserves. As with most first albums, it is a strong collection of his
best original songs from the past years and was recorded at the Ugly
Duck Records Studios in Midrand. Since then, Duke has assembled a group, taught them these songs and is getting ready to officially launch ‘No Regrets’ in May at the Showcase in Johannesburg.

Tracks off the album have recently been playlisted by both SAStream.com
and PowerZone. The Kevin Duke Band will also be playing at a forthcoming Emerging Sounds competition at Morgan's Cat Randburg Waterfront on Sunday 3rd March. (SS)

SHILOH'S CORNER

JADE WARRRIOR (the morning mist)
part 1

For some strange and destined reason the world walked past a rising eastern mist called Jade Warrior. For those that have wallowed in the wetness of this mysterious soundscape would know truly well that these Samurai musicians express the very essence of an ambient revolution that found its fortitude and maturity in the mid seventies. Their time started in 1969 when self taught musicians Jon Field (flute) and Tony Duhig (guitar) began to write dance dramas for students that were modernising the Shakespearean ballads of the day. Desperately seeking identity the duet featured in the early days as an afro blues duo at London's legendary Marquee club.

At that stage Tony was also assisting a sixties pop group called Unit Four Plus Two who had achieved notable success with their hit single "Concrete and clay". As the story goes Duhig met Glyn Harvard while performing at a gig in Persia. With similar vision this triumvirate launched their career as Jade Warrior.

Their debut album featured a sound and style clearly reflective of King Crimson patterns that would rise up jagged and then pacify in the next moment. Their seven minute epic called "Masai morning" portrays a musical battle between warrior and lion. The electric anger of Tony's guitar vividly expounds the roar of the lion while the percussion of Jon Field takes you aggressively into the grasslands of Kenya. What proceeded was two more highly understated concept albums, all reflecting an opium enhanced eastern intrigue on their outstanding album covers.

Without any comment on the album "Released" let us focus on their milestone eclectic "Last autumn's dream" which opened with a mesmerising folk influenced "Winter's tale". The further one digs into the deepness of this ambient progression, the more texture and colour is found with definitive jazz projection in the 4/4 beat, similar to that of the free jazz improvisation of Ornette Coleman.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

A SECOND LOOK AT 3 CDs

As the SA Rock Digest enters its third year, and as I continue to enjoy
South African rock of the past and present, and as part of my continuing quest for fine rock, I thought I'd go where I knew I could find plenty of good stuff: back to my own collection.

So these days, I'm listening through my collection of SA music, which is primarily rock, in alphabetical order according to the album title. Here is a trio from B, D, and F.

BAXTOP -- Sounds better than ever. From the out-Doobie-ing the Doobies
title track 'Jo Bangles', through their second single release 'Take Me To Your Heart', to 'Night Time Train', and others, this CD keeps the listener satisfied.

Call it rock-country-Southern-rock-boogie (though not so heavy in the boogie bottom as, say, Canned Heat). With a couple of easygoing slower songs along the way, this album swings, rocks, and trots along at a lively pace.

The guitars by Larry Amos and Tim Parr are cool and solid pleasure, the
drums and bass beat and pump dead solid perfect. The pure playing in the instrumental sections really shine, and the vocals clearly complement the songs.

Larry Amos & Baxtop
http://www.rock.co.za/files/larry_amos.html

JACK HAMMER -- 'Death of a Gypsy' -- Wonderful album of a rock guitarist and band playing with total big rock sound understanding.

The 'Gypsy Suite', the five centerpiece songs on this CD, are masterful and artistic rock -- gutsy and solid rock, not overblown and baroque "art-rock". This is real guitar-hero stuff with somber, hard lyrics, about human mortality, about tragedy, about love. These lyrics, nihilistic and grim, express the brevity of the human life and sing of the value of our lives as well as any poem.

Piet Botha & Jack Hammer
http://www.pietbotha.com

THE FLAMES -- 'The Best of The Flames' -- Some of the best soul I've ever heard. Horns, vocals, emotion, this CD has it all. Covers that shine as well as or better than the originals, original tunes -- sharp and smart soul with genuine and precise vocals. The phrase "world class" implies that the competition is from all over, not just Detroit, LA, or NYC -- and these musos prove the point because they are world class.

The Flames
http://www.the-flames.com

As I move on through the worlds of SA rock in particular and SA music in general, from Amersham to Zoid, to once again be struck by the pleasure of rock listening as I was with these three CDs, I'll report here on my findings. It's not scientific, but the results are positive.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

SILVER TREES - ABSTRACT TRUTH

Last weekend I decided to explore London's Portabello Road, a road famous for it's street market. In amongst all the little stalls were a number of interesting record shops. These are the kind of record shops that cause wallets to tremble and have been known to bring platinum credit cards to their knees as they contain mostly rare and collectable vinyl (£750 for a picture disc of Wing's 'Back to the Egg' anyone?)

Most of the staff at the shops had either not heard of Rodriguez's 'Cold Fact' or were vaguely aware of it. However what I did find was a copy of Abstract Truth's 'Silver Trees'. It contained a small sticker saying 'Rare South African Heavy Prog Album'. Rare? yes, South African? of course, Prog Album? definitely, but heavy, I don't think so. This is somewhat psychedelic prog that is full of swirling organ, steady rhythmic bass and loads of flute. In fact 3 of the 4 members of the group are credited as playing flute and it this that gives the album a lightness to it.

Also of note is that there is only one song over the 4 minute mark, an
unusual trait in a prog rock album. The long song is the title track that features some awesome guitar from Kenny Henson and intricate organ playing from Peter Measroch.

Another interesting touch is the African Jive sound on the opening track 'Pollution' and the harpsicord on 'Moving Away', the former placing the album in Africa, the latter placing the album in Medieval Europe, both giving the album a sense of timelessness and universal appeal.

It's this wonderful brew of psychedelic, rock, jazz, classical, blues, funk and jive that makes this a special album that should be sought out, and with the wind instruments playing a major role on the album, this could make a really good (Retro) Fresh Flute Salad.

3 [2] Mother - Barbra Striesand
4 [4] I Will Return - Springwater

Melanie took a big leap from number 6 to the top spot with her UK number 4 hit 'Brand New Key', ousting Middle of the Road from the pole position. Barbra Streeisand's 'Mother' faltered while John Lennon moved up a couple of positions with his own (original) version. Lennon also had a pair of top 10 hits with 'Imagine' a position below 'Mother'.

'Softly Whispering I Love You' by the Congregation and Elvis' 'I Just can't Help Believing' were new to the top 10 with Elvis having taken 3 weeks to get there and the Congregation a mere two weeks.

Although there were no South Africans in the top 10, there were 2 local new entries into the top 20, these being 'Ek is Verlief op Jou' by Andre and Jody Wayne's 'Everything is beautiful'. The other new entry into the top 20 was the New Seekers with 'I'd like to teach the World to Sing', a song that was later the basis for a successful Coca-Cola advert.

South Africans at number 1 this week:

CD TO VINYL

I am interested in learning how to burn my own CDs from my vinyl collection. I've been trying to gather information on how to do this and I have yet to find anyone who can say "This is how you do it." I know I can experiment and try a few things but I have to believe that there is at least person who can give me basic equipment and software requirements. Thank you, Daniel

BUCCANEER

Hi, I am looking for the lyrics to McCully Workshop's "Buccaneer". I used to go and see them in the 70's (I grew up in Cape Town and I am now 42 years old). Have searched the web but to no avail. Any ideas?
Many Thanks

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------

JULIAN'S BISTRO
Julian's Bistro and Theatre
286 Acacia Rd, Blackheath, Jhb.
011-678-2880

Julian's Bistro near Cresta Centre in Randburg features live music every Wednesday to Sunday night and also on Sunday afternoons.

The Julian is this case is Julian Laxton, South African rock legend. Hawk, Freedoms Children, Suck, Otis Waygood, Stingray & Rabbitt: all classic SA rock bands and Julian has either played with and/or produced all of them. And he had Trevor Rabin as his bass-player in the Julian Laxton band.

"Legends don't die, they just smell that way", quips the friendly Julian, when asked about his pedigree. Don't know about the smell, but I heard some great sounds when I saw him jamming with Burglar's Dog on Wednesday night and again on Friday night, this time with blues-rockers Three Foot Thang.

Burglar's Dog are a husband-and-wife rock duo, Charlie and Lee, who play superb rock covers. They cover the hits of today with songs from Nickelback and Train for example, and then go back to the 70s with songs like 'School' from Supertramp, and Free's 'Alright Now'. They were helped out on occasional guest vocals by Colleen Breel, whom some of you may remember as the keyboardist on Snakeshed's 'Art Of Mist'.
And then Julian jumped on stage and jammed through some great versions of 'Smoke On The Water', 'Red House' and other songs from rock history.

On Friday night I arrived late at Julians (having first seen Piet Botha at Boomhuisie, but thats another review), but still managed to see 2 sets from Three Foot Thang. One set featured guest guitarist Nigel who played great versions of songs from Little Feat, Pat Travers, Toto and Steely Dan, for example. Another guest guitarist, the young Russell, joined them for a few songs, a highlight being a wah-wah drenched version of Jimi Hendrix's blues classic 'Red House'.

And then we were in for another treat. Julian Laxton himself, who has been rocking since the 60s, strapped on his guitar and played a few extended blues jams, trading licks with guitarist Jeff Plant. Awe-inspiring. One of the jams included a drum solo and bass solo from the very tight rhythm section. And the harmonica-player (I'm afraid I don't know his name) really added something special to every song. "We'll rock your blues away" is Three Foot Thang's motto, and they sure lived up to it.

If I lived in JoBurg, I would definitely be a regular at Julian's Bistro. Good food, great atmosphere and wonderful, wonderful live rock and blues... (BC)

JOHNNY CLEGG LIVE AT KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS
Saturday 24 February
by Jacques Vosloo

"Hhaannana!" he cried, like a fire from heaven, and from the start of
this concert we were filled with Johnny Clegg’s (and his band’s) vibe of hope and upliftment. Together we were gonna make it through the evening, and the journey of life.

When the opening guitar chords for 'African Sky Blue' were struck ...
say no more, a magical evening had begun. The revamped version of
'December African Rain' was fresh, with a strong repeated lyric of
"Africa what made you so strong?". Then we heard a humorous story about
how on Mondays, a young Johnny, the manager of the Boers’ farm, and his
fellow workers, were briefed by the farmer about what lay ahead, and all the time they were thinking (and even saying): "Come on Friday" (cue a stirring "Woza Friday"). By the chorus of the next song, 'Going To Giyani', the entire audience at Kirstenbosch was standing up and getting down, the flora of Cape Town included. 'Bullets for Bafazane' was followed by an informative musical discussion on dance, with a dazzling display of these Zulu dancing skills, performed with some of Johnny’s friends.

The special moments flew by - a new song, with a strong Indian ragga
feel, that would have made the late George Harrison proud; more new
material with 'Into The Picture’; Johnny going full tilt on the classics 'Cruel Crazy, Beautiful World' and 'I Call Your Name', and then settling down with a ballad called 'Crossroads', moving us all like a true master of his field. Then into the funky jazz number 'Siyayihando', followed by the great ‘Great Heart', and then 'Scatterlings'... "Wow!!"

Next thing he’s stomping around with the Zulu vocab flowing smoothly
from his lips. This being my first time ever seeing Johnny Clegg live,
it dawns on me what the fuss is all about. The man is truly a legend!
Eight sturdy Zulu dancers dance on to the stage with a great visual
display of their skills, with the crowd, standing and watching in sheer
awe. Johnny and friend "battle" against those eight in dance (I’m not
sure who wins, but who cares), and then they’re all gone, and the stage
is empty and silent.

"Encore!" Standing ovation. "Encore!" and then... 'Impi'. Damn he’s good. We all join in on the last number, and I think I now know why the dog barks at the moon. (JV)

on the Digest every week for all these dates, updates, and details.

SOUTHERN CROSS EASTER FESTIVAL 2002

The three-day Southern Cross Easter Music Festival 2002 will take place
at the Southern Cross farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands from Friday
March 29 until Sunday March 31. The Southern Cross farm is situated just 2,5 hours drive from Durban and 4,5 hours from Johannesburg.

Acts appearing include Max Normal, Semisane, Tsunami, Tweak, Wonderboom, Zen Arcade, One80, A.K. Massive, Larry Amos, African Thyme, Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, Interitmo Drummers, Landscape Prayers, Madala Kunene, Phatlip, Swiftlove, Samsun, and The Bandits. Other names will be added closer to the event. Festival goers can also look forward to the magic of Mark Rose-Christie, world-renowned illusionist, on both Friday and Saturday.

Camping facilities at the festival are situated near the Mooi River and
include flushing toilets and free hot showers for festival fans. There
will also be a massive marquee erected near the main stage to protect
music-fans from sunburn and rain. For those wanting to wander off from
the main festival area, there are a host of different activities
including fly-fishing, swimming, hiking, rock climbing, river tubing,
koppie climbing and even archery or a flip in a micro-light aircraft.
The four-kilometre stretch of river is perfect for swimming and cooling
off - and NSRI lifeguards will be on duty throughout the festival.

Tickets cost R175 per person at Computicket or Ticket Web. At the gate,
tickets cost R200 on Friday, R150 on Saturday and R100 on Sunday.

SPLASHY FEN 2002

The 13th Splashy Fen Music Festival will take place on the farm of the
same name, against an exquisite backdrop of the Southern Drakensberg,
from April 25 - 28 2002.

There'll be top rock acts in the Marquee and the Dome day and night time stages, with a variety of Blues, World Music and Folk Rock and, this year, some "reggae splash". The free stage provides an opportunity for established and up-and-coming musos to jam in front of a captive
audience.

Splashy means so much to so many people. For musicians it's a dedicated
audience of between 5000 - 10 000 people; for families its an
opportunity to bond with a common interest; for teenagers it’s a
time-out from parents; for music lovers it's a feast for the ears; and
for campers it’s heaven.

Tickets are currently available at Computicket (for the months of
February and March only) at a discounted rate of R208.00. In April the
price goes up to R228.00. Tickets at other outlets - Game, Rhythmic Beat - are available from mid-March at a cost of R220.00. The gate price is R250.00.

AMANDA HAU and CLAIRE ROSE-INNES; two of Caroline Blundell's guitar
acolytes making their debut. And since Caroline chooses such excellent
material to teach, and turns out such inspired students, these ladies will be a treat, for sure.

ROB DRAKE; of whom, solo, we do not hear enough. On lead guitar, with the Blues Connection? Excellent. In ensemble with other players? Superb. But solo, flying his self-rebuilt vintage Gibson? Stunning (guitar pickers amongst us self-consciously shuffle forwards and pretend that we aren't watching his hands!).

FLAT STANLEY; a chance to hear this unique and highly accomplished
outfit, lead by the very able Andrew McPherson, winners of the Barleycorn Songwriting Competition in 2000 and runners-up last year.
