3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------

NEW TRIBE AFTER TRIBE ALBUM COMING SOON

South African born Robbi Robb is well-known to SA Rock fans. He started "rocking against the system" back in 1980 with the raucous punk-rock sounds of the Asylum Kids. He formed Tribe After Tribe in 1985 and released the brilliant album 'Power' (see John Samson's review below) featuring a classic cover of Bob Dylan's 'As I Went Out One Morning (Damsel)'. This track and Asylum Kid's 'Schoolboy' are both on the new RetroFresh compilation 'Rocking Against The System' (see http://www.rock.co.za/legends/rocking.html)

In July 1986 Robbi relocated to LA and continued under the Tribe After Tribe banner releasing 3 more albums. He also teamed up with Jeff Ament (from Pearl Jam) and ex-Fastbacks drummer Richard Stuverud in a side-project called Three Fish and released 2 CDs, the most recent being 1999's 'The Quiet Table' which featured North African and Turkish influences.

And now we have news of a brand new Tribe After Tribe CD titled 'Enchanted Entrance' which is due for release very shortly.

Press release:
"We found a very special delicacy for you: the American Tribe After Tribe who supported Pearl Jam on their US tour, have a new single! "Eloise" {No relation to Barry Ryan's classic 1968 hit - ed} is their brilliant new single EP and the tracks are taken from the new Tribe After Tribe album. Their unique alternative psycho rock fascinates and hypnotizes you from its very beginning. The voice of Robbi Robb reminds you of Bono's (U2) in his bestform. I hope, you like the single as much as we do ... and off to the DAC (Deutsche Alternative Charts = German Alternative Charts) with this cool band!"

-- Public Propaganda
(translated from German by André Wilms, webmaster for http://www.RobbiRobb.com)

Win a CD:
André Wilms has very kindly sent the SA Rock Digest a few copies of this promo disc 'Eloise', the first single off Tribe After Tribe's new album 'Enchanted Entrance'. The second track on this promo copy is 'Merryround Ago' which will also appear on the new album.

To put yourself in line for one of these 2-track promo CDs, visit http://www.RobbiRobb.com, name 3 of the musicians on the new album and send your answer to competition@sarockdigest.com?Subject=RobbiRobb

Buy CDs:
If you are not lucky enough to receive one of these CDs for free, you can always order them from André's website. Here's the deal:

"As my site doesn't get financial support from anywhere, I surely can't give away all these promos without getting nothing in return. That is you'll have to give me the costs for postage, etc. which is:
3 Euro if you live in Europe.
6 Euro for the rest of the world (air mail is quite expensive)"

Where the Mountain meets the City:
The music of Tribe After Tribe has also been heard recently as part of a unique exhibition currently open at 232 Long Street in Cape Town during March. 'Where the Mountain meets the City' features a series of images of the different crossroads of Long Street, printed onto glass and aluminium, and is the second and ongoing collaboration between artist Arlene Amaler-Raviv and photographer Dale Yudelman.

Included in this exhibition is a 1.59 second animated film, viewed as if a peep show, which encapsulates the din of city through an ingenious
combination of pacey editing and urban imagery, offset against a
typically thumping soundtrack performed by Robbi Robb and Tribe After
Tribe.

As part of the Cape Town Month of Photography (15 March - 14 April),
Yudelman is also showing new work at Jo'burg Bar in Cape Town

GEORGE VOROS' DRUM BOOK NOW AVAILABLE

Ex-South African drummer, Georg Voros (Snakeshed, Neill Solomon, Void),
will be in Johannesburg from March 21-27 to promote his highly
recommended book, 'Rhythm Of The Head'. This book, which has been
described as "The original 'attitude' book for drummers and other
instrumentalists", will now be available for those who have not yet been able to get a copy.

'Rhythm Of The Head' has endorsements from the likes of Bill Bruford,
Steve White, Paul Weller, Oasis, Peter Baron, Courtney Pine, Jeff
Berlin, Carl Palmer, Virgil Donati, Steve Vai, Tina Arena, Francis
Seriau (the Director of Drumtech in London), Gary Husband, Billy Cobham, and Lloyd Ryan, the UK Celebrity Drum Educator/Clinician.

- Q Magazine described the book as: "Different, because it's not just
about paradiddles. Instead, Voros - a seasoned session man brings
drumming into the realm of philosophy".

- Geoff Nicholls (Rhythm, Making Music's Drum Hum columnist) said: "The
book is part catharsis, part self analysis, part justification for the
cool state of mind and positive attitude Georg Voros has attained during a long and varied career. ... With enough drum technique books around nowadays to confound Terry Bozzio through five lifetimes, this sort of good-sense drummers' survival guide is an essential anti-dote".

- Talking Drums USA added: "This book can provide some of the tea and
sympathy we all need from time to time in our quiet times of doubt and
reflection. If you need it, it's here".

SHILOH'S CORNER

STRAWBS (fruit of the loom)
Part 2 of 3

The eponymous album sported a magnificent track called "The Battle" which describes a game of chess (satirically reflecting the horror of battle). This magnificent epic is more profoundly executed on an acoustic album called "Old School Days" by Dave Cousins and Brian Willoughby. The grinding Hammond B that empowers the battle was featured by Rick Wakeman at a time when he was still cutting his teeth on albums like "Space Oddity" by David Bowie. Logistically the album known as "Strawbs" was their second release which featured session musicians as varied as John Paul Jones on bass (Led Zeppelin) and Nicky Hopkins on piano.

Of note their second single "The man who called himself Jesus" was spoken by actor Richard Wilson better known as Victor Meldrew in the BBC's "One foot in the grave". This was immediately banned by the BBC for its controversial religious content. Strangely Rick Wakeman's name appeared for the first time on the record sleeve of the album "Dragon Fly". Although their debut album received outstanding acclaim in the British folk circles, a change in style with their second venture (keyboard dominated) confused their puritan audience.

In 1970 Strawbs recruited Richard Hudson on drums and John Ford bass from the group Velvet Opera. Rick Wakeman officially replaced Claire Deniz and Ron Chesterman. The third album produced by Tony Visconti called "Just a collection of antiques and curios - live at the Queen Elizabeth hall" gave overnight stardom to keyboardist Rick Wakeman as predicted on the front page of Melody Maker. Strawbs then ventured into their finest studio production, the esoteric "From the Witchwood" with orchestral arrangement by Tony Visconti. The album featured Indian sitar and the philosophical protest "Hangman and the Papist" (IRA struggle between brothers of the same land).

This momentous album was re-issued in 1974 due to its eventual recognition regarding the fusion of grinding Hammond B interwoven with melody and percussion. It is the Strawbs' finest hour for those that have wavered under the mystical "Witchwood" and the picture provoking "In amongst the roses". In February 1972 Strawbs released their "Grave new world" which was strongly influenced by the Tibetan "Book of the dead". This gloomy project did have one particular highlight, that being the spiritual single "Benedictus" and strangely enough it was the first album to reach the US charts.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

LIKE A VISION - THE USUAL

Smooth, proficient, and posed on the cover in casual, well-dressed
insouciance. That look is like their music: smart and urbane, yet relaxed. No wonder I have read that they had a strong fan base. This seven-track EP has some wonderful moments.

The title track has the spirit of hit single permeating it. The second one, 'I Believe You', slows with emotive sincerity, then things pick back up with 'World for Sale' (the middle jam is especially worth a listen). And so it goes: a generally up-tempo and lively CD, with occasional gentle songs, to end with a wordless flow of instruments and chanting harmony.

Even if 'Like a Vision' were all lively songs, it still wouldn't be a
monochrome work, though, for these professionals don't fall into repetitive ruts.

I hesitate to call this light rock, because there is a captivating aspect to The Usual's music. It is true there is no atonality here, no fuzz guitar. While rock is supposed to insist on being heard, these guys do grab one's attention without being overtly blaring or rude.

I've been calling this an EP, but in time it is over thirty-one minutes, about as long as a vinyl album.

I suppose one way to think of The Usual is if you enjoy the 80's sound,
here's a 90's sound with an echo of the 80's in it. But it is better to think of The Usual as a talented quartet whose music had lovely guitar work, a real singer, some harmonies, a good bottom, and a drummer of variety.

Though too modest and restrained to call themselves The Unusual, this
natural display of talent is, well, unusual.

Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

POWER - TRIBE AFTER TRIBE (1985)

A Tribe after Tribe album called 'Power'? That's a bit like a Westlife album called 'Soppy'. There's an advert on television in the UK for a line of wood care products that has the catch phrase 'It does exactly what is says on the tin.' Well 'Power' does exactly what is says on the cover.

Unlike the rough and ready punk of Robbi Robb's Asylum Kids days, the Tribe released an album of highly polished, well-produced power rock. It's not power as in how many times can you bang the drum as loud as possible, but power in a majestic big sound way. This is a sound that the word landscapes is often associated with, and in this case Grand Canyon comes to mind.

But it is not a friendly land you pass through here. There's foreboding in them drums, tension in the voice and this is most obvious in the dark and brooding 'Ballad of Anneline K.' about the ex-beauty queen (nothing to do with the Richard Clayderman piece). This song walks up and down the spine in a pair of Anneline's stilettos, pricking the conscience and consciousness in a deliciously uncomfortable way. It's a bit like the driving past those poverty stricken settlements on your way to Sun City.

While the Asylum Kids brought you angry young tunes, the Tribe moved on to produce angry more mature tunes, and no matter what Rodriguez says, I think that the system feared the more mature tunes just as much as the young ones. The most overtly political track on 'Power' is 'Suburb in the South' and in case you're not sure what they're talking about, '(Dedication to Soweto)' is suffixed to the title. The song gives a bleak description of a night in the township to a sinister, atmospheric synth sound.

Robbi Robb has never been one to compromise. He has always spoken his mind, but has constantly done so to music of the highest quality. With the production reins firmly grasped by the Tribe the album is buffed to a glistening sheen and oozes power. I could say that it sounds a bit like éVoid without the 'African' sound, but that would be unethnical.

DEEP PURPLE FOUNDER MEMBER RETIRES

It is with a sad heart that we announce that Deep Purple founder member (Deep Purple originally formed in 1968) and master keyboardist Jon Lord has retired from Deep Purple.

Roger Glover (bassist):
"I should inform you that Jon has told us he plans to retire from active participation in Deep Purple. We wish him the best. The moment cannot pass without a personal comment. It is sad that Jon has come to this difficult decision but every one of us respects his right to
determine his own life. I have learned so much from him that I could not possibly do him justice by attempting to quantify it. Don Airey will be our keyboard player from now on and we welcome him to the
band."

An archival request:

Is there ANYbody out there who in an absent-minded moment
taped a 'Forces Favourites' request programme (or more than one)
off Springbok Radio back in the days when.... and then who, in a
series of absent-minded moments, never taped over it/them? If so,
could you PLEASE contact me because I would like to get hold of

The SABC have not kept any of these programmes. And while you're at it, if you have any pro-SADF songs from the same era or a copy of the

Lastly, if anyone has any rare archival footage of Roger Lucey (as

NEIL FOX

I am trying to locate Neil Fox urgently. He drummed for Pendulum in the 70's and for Off the Edge in the 80's and I believe he has been gigging and doing some session work.

THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL LINE-UP - STAGE BY STAGE

When it came to naming the four venues to be used for the initial North
Sea Jazz Festival at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town in 2000, the
festival organisers, ESP-Afrika, decided to bestow that honour on four
of the 'Mother City's' finest and most beloved jazz clubs - Manenbergs,
Kippies, Rosies, and the Bassline.

'Kippies' is the large, main central auditorium in the Good Hope Centre, where the big name festival headliners strut their stuff on a high and wide stage before a large sea of faces and the packed raised
seating that encircles the back of the venue. This year the 'Kippies'
traditional parade of jazz stars continues with a strong and varied
line-up, beginning on the first night (Saturday 30th March) with Judith Sephuma, followed by George Duke with his band and special guests, Kenny Lattimore and Chanté Moore, Ringo Madlingozi, and Tower Of Power.

Sunday night (March 31) on the 'Kippies' Stage begins with Oliver
Mtukudzi, followed by Spyro Gyra, PedXulu, and the sensational US
soul-jazz vocalist Erykah Badu.

Tucked away on the opposite side of the Good Hope Centre to 'Kippies' is the 'Rosies' stage, a smaller, warmer, and more intimate setting. This year, the honour of opening proceedings on the 'Rosies' stage
falls to the Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw. After them is Toots
Thielemans, Tribe, and the Wessel van Rensburg Trio.

The Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw will also open the Sunday
evening's program on the 'Rosies' stage; on this second occasion
featuring special guests Toots Thielemans and Roberta Gambarini. Second
up is jazz saxophone legend James Moody, followed by Ahmad Jamal, and
finishing with the Allen Kwela Quartet.

Next week - the 'Manenberg' and 'Bassline' stages' line-up.

Afrikaanse komposisies verwerk het in 'n Jazz Styl en dit dan as 'n show uittevat. Die show gaan wys in Oudtshoorn by die KKNK (Klein Karoo
Nationale Kunstefees) asook in Bloemfontein en in Pretoria, en feature
al 12 kunstenaars wat op die CD verskyn. Die titel van die CD en die
show is "Al Daai Jazz". CD's sal beskikbaar wees om te koop by die

Theron; 'Al Daai Jazz - Karin Hougaardt; 'Ek Wil Jou Ken' - Ilse Klink
'Blou' - Cutt Glass
