Lukas was one of the leading lights of the highly creative 80's South African music scene and was renowned for his vibrant stage performance and sense of humour. Fellow band members René and Kitty posted this tribute: "Lukas Crouse, the fabulous and legendary keyboard player and style icon of Via Afrika has passed on. He will be vastly missed by the film and music industry, friends and Via Afrikans." Benjy Mudie Fresh Music Via Afrika http://www.cd.co.za/legends/viaafrika -------------- HENRY ATE FAREWELL AT THE ROXY Henry Ate burst onto the local scene in the heady days of 1996 with their first album 'Slap in the Face' produced by Willem Möller on a shoe-string budget in a quaint little house in Yeoville. In 1998 Karma Swanepoel signed to Primedia Music, and the second album, 'One Day Soon', saw the light. However a name change, from Henry Ate to Karma, proved to be a disastrous decision and the band’s career stalled. The band then signed to EMI, reinstated the name Henry Ate, and released 'Torn and Tattered', an impressive and ambitious body of work that received the credit it deserved and put Karma’s career back on track. Karma has now announced that she will be relocating to London to open a studio with Neal Snyman. So on Friday 17 May, The Roxy Rhythm Bar will be featuring the last Henry Ate show in Johannesburg/SA for some time. Expect a large crowd of distraught Karma devotees up close to the stage, singing along to all those Henry Ate songs they've come to love, and some new ones they may not yet know. The Digest wishes them well in their venture {aren’t they going on a plane? - motoring ed}. ----------------- THE ROCK CONCERT A ‘Woodstock 4’ Warm-Up Event Sat 25 May On Saturday 25 May, Authentic Ideas and Carnival City Casino & Entertainment World join forces in bringing an all ages rock onslaught to the Big Top Arena, with some of South Africa’s most loved rock bands and DJ Barney Simon. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- IAN HENDERSON - FREEFALL http://www.ianhenderson.net ‘Freefall’ is the sound of a musical plan coming together beautifully. Ian Henderson is a new SA singer songwriter who has taken ten of his best compositions into the Durban studios of Angus Kerr and David Birch and, with their help and that of a host of Durban musicians, has emerged with an album that is soon going to find its way into many people’s hearts, homes and stereos. The Kerr/Birch team has produced some great albums recently (Perez, Tony Cox, Landscape Prayers), but ‘Freefall’ is going to bring them plentch new customers. Every one of these ten songs has been given a sympathetic and appropriate musical makeover, and consequently each adds another facet to this little gem of an album. As is the new style, acoustic instruments and personal lyrics mix comfortably with their electronic cousins and these inventive arrangements give these songs space and time to grow and expose their charms. ‘Freefall’ is also packed with a range of magical musical touches by artists in ‘a supporting role’ that demand repeated listenings. There’s that gorgeous cello on ‘Grandfather’, the soaring choral climax of ‘I Believe’, Ntsholeng Se’etso’s wondrous and emotive bass all over the album, and many other memorable moments. Like the strong but vulnerable opener ‘Crash Landing’, the jazzy mid-album catharsis of ‘Feel’, the beautiful Buckley-like ‘Lover Goodbye’, and the powerful and moving closing duo of deserved first single, ‘Beautiful Life’, and ‘Fine Day’ with Kerry de Witt on vocals. But ultimately it is Ian Henderson’s rough-sweet vocals, thoughtful piano touches and obvious songwriting skills that give this bright debut its winning core. ‘Freefall’ into this! (SS) ------------ COMPILATIONS ------------ VLOEK VAN DIE KITAAR - 18 AFRIKAANSE ROCKERS 1979-2001 http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/vloek.html Dagga-Dirk Uys first mentioned this CD in September 2001 (see http://www.new.co.za/~currin/boereplaas1.html), and now at last it sees the light of day. It is a history of Afrikaans Rock and Roll from Anton Goosen's 'Blommetjie Gedenk Aan My' from 1979, through the 80s and 90s with tracks from Afrikaans rock legends like Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart (singing the title track), Bernoldus Niemand (the alter ego of the late, great James Phillips), Piet Botha (with his incredible anti-war song 'Goeienag Generaal'), Akkedis and Battery 9 and then crashing into the new millennium with Karen Zoid ('Afrikaners is Plesierig'), Spinnekop, Beeskraal and Brasse Van Die Kaap ('Cape Flats', with support from Cape band Nine). Also included is the early (and prophetic) Springbok Nude Girls song, 'Pappa Ek Wil 'n Popster Word', originally released on the 'Wingerd Rock 1 - Songs Uit Die Bos' CD in 1997. Another 'Wingerd Rock' song, 'Elektrisiteit' by Raaskopleef, is also on this new compilation. The A to Z of Afrikaans Rock (from Akkedis to Karen Zoid) and all its genres (blues, boogie, industrial, punk, hip hop, rap, reggae, metal and more) are on this one CD. Highly recommended. More info at: http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/vloek.html If the cover painting by Vernon Swart looks vaguely familiar, get out any of your old Led Zeppelin albums on the Swan Song label and you'll get the picture. Read extracts from an interview with Dagga-Dirk Uys by Hannalie Booysens below under the 'Ruk 'n Rol' section. ------------- INTERNATIONAL ------------- VARIOUS ARTISTS - WIRED-UP If just names like Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Godsmack and Limp Bizkit scare the living @#$% out of you, then you are probably too old for this CD. A brilliant collection of what's been happening recently on the nu-metal scene internationally. 20 tracks including 'How You Remind Me' from Nickelback, 'My Way' ("or the highway") by Limp Bizkit, 'Its Been Awhile' from Staind, the powerful 'Crawling' by Linkin Park and many other songs from the likes of Puddle Of Mudd, A, P.O.D., Incubus, Blink 182 and others. Even if you have most of the albums by these artists, this is great way to have some of their best songs all on one CD. And you over 35s should buy this CD so you can hear what your teenage children are listening to. Remember how your parents hated your Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Budgie albums? And hey, you might even find some stuff you like here. ----------- ONE WORLD ----------- NEW TITLES AT ONE WORLD http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Various - ‘African Guitar Kings’ [jazz] As the title suggests this is a not-to-be-missed compilation of the kings of guitar. Featuring the smooth jazz of Jimmy Dludlu and the skillful and intricate melodies of Louis Mhlanga and Selaelo Selota and others. Steve Dyer - ‘Son Of The Soil’ [jazz] This great saxophonist releases his second album for the Sheer label. A classy release with some brilliantly expansive jazzscapes. The album also features two of SA's great pianists, Themba Mkhize and Paul Hanmer. Peach - ‘On Loan For Evolution’ [rock] More classic South African rock from the Retro Fresh label with rare pictures and liner notes that make for some very interesting reading. The music is great too, digitally re-mastered and with the bonus track ‘Out Of Tune’. Khaya Hayane Dlamini - ‘Utshwala’ [township pop] This debut album of smooth township pop and jazz gets better and better with every listen. Khaya was also featured on the 'Easy Over Africa' compilation where he opened proceedings with a great number entitled ‘Ithemba (Hope)’. Joe Nina - ‘Nomthandazo’ [township pop] The follow-up to his ‘Sbali’ album and features the legendary Steve Kekana on one of the tracks. A cool collection of township pop tracks that show maturity and class in a way that only Joe Nina knows how. Felix Laband - ‘4/4 Down The Stairs’ [electronica] South African music may not be associated with bleepy down-tempo electronica but Felix Laband is without a doubt leading the way in that field. Some very interesting packaging and a broad array of mind bending tunes. Gurash - ‘Back 2 Mapetla’ [kwaito] A great Kwaito release, the songs are a mixture of house, township pop and jazz. Featuring artists like Suthukazi Arosi and McCoy Mrubata, this is hot! Nokukhanya - ‘Uyinkosi Yami’ [gospel] The debut album from a rising star on the SA gospel scene and includes the outstanding title track 'Uyinkosi Yami' which is getting all the radio and TV airplay. Urban One - compiled by Dave Chislett [contemporary literature] A selection of hip SA writings featuring 16 up-and-coming SA writers. ONE WORLD http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR (Gothic Deliverance) Part 3 Anti-war sentiment comes to the forefront with a nine minute deluge "The emperor in his war-room" clearly reflecting the passive embrace of the Dutch spirit Peter Hammill. The rhythms of "Pioneers over C" or the thirty minute mind mangle "A plague of lighthouse keepers" will definitely keep you in-doors. In 1976 came the violin virtuoso of Graham Smith from the Scottish group String Driven Thing. One look at Van Der Graaf would send you back to Mama with your arms wide open (Graham Smith included). The strength of Hammill is puritanically expressed on his landmark dream work "Over". This outstanding 1977 release which comprises of challenging folk contributions (expressed like never before) excels all previous work. His soprano ability on "This side of the looking glass" is beyond beauty and extraordinary in penetration and poignancy. Beware of the four minute "Betrayed" where Graham Smith grinds your chakras with his spell binding violin. Not to be taken lightly "(On Tuesdays she used to do) yoga" should emancipate those trapped with suicidal tendencies. The album "Over", although one of many magnificent solo releases, is likened to an earlier Germanic reflection called "Chameleon in the shadow of the night". No-one touches you the way Hammill does, but you have to be ready for it (few are). Robert Fripp would again assist Hammill on a solo album called "Fools mate", while later Hammill would return the compliment on Fripp's "Exposure" album. The group only played one concert in the US in 1976, and New York never knew what hit them. These days Peter Hammill has joined the global family on Gabriel's Real World label. His world music contributions with John Cale on violin are likened to the content of his "Over" album. Although the world music repertoire has becomes his eventual embrace, he remains a poet boundlessly superior in lyrics, way beyond the Morrisons / Buckley's and Cohens of the day. Next week Shiloh starts a 4 part series on Frank Zappa. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music VALIANT SWART - DIE MYSTIC BOER My introduction to Valiant Swart was 'Dorpstraat Revisited'. Hearing that work, I thought, "So, that's Valiant's sound. He's a pleasant-sounding folkie." Then, intrigued by the title and the cover art of a horseback rider toting a guitar to join the Afrikaner Rock Commando, I ordered 'Die Mystic Boer'. "Hey," I thought naively, "Valiant can also rock! Listen to that guitar!" Subsequent CDs have proved that Valiant Swart is a rocker, not an acoustic troubadour who rocked on one digital outing. Instead, he's an electric troubadour who unplugged on 'Dorpstraat'. I don't pretend to understand all of the words, but in the flashes I do understand and have managed to translate, there is excellent, poetic songwriting. I have three versions of the title song on as many CDs (one the first Tassenberg CD), which shows how popular is 'Die Mystic Boer'. I suspect the song has deep resonances in the heart of the modern Afrikaner. Perhaps it has been chosen by many Afrikaner people as an unofficial modern anthem. Anyway you hear it, 'Die Mystic Boer' is a rhythmic song, haunting and spiritual. The other songs rock with plenty of sharp electric guitar. The first track, 'Eldorado' (the lost city of gold) is a modern rock 'n' roll instrumental. 'Dis 'n Hondelewe', ironical to the title, talks about fat cats. 'My Kroon!' is an uplifting rocker. In fact, there's not a weak number on this whole set. The closest Valiant gets to slow dancing is 'In die Transvaal', a song full of longing and evocative of memories, or the bluesy 'Slangdans'. And here in Texas, we can two-step to 'Ware Liefde'. Mostly though, Valiant Swart rocks. His music satisfies. Who knows what's going to come out of his recent trip to the Louisiana Delta, and Robert Johnson's crossroads? I suspect Valiant wouldn't cut deals, but would shout at the devil and just go on playing his rocking electric blues guitar his own way. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music KEVIN DUKE - NO REGRETS Judging by the cover shots of Kevin Duke's 'No Regrets' he's white, but not exactly thin. However the moniker The Average Build White Duke doesn't really flow, so I guess we'll have to call him Kev (if that's all right with you Mr Duke?). Starting with a tipping of the hat to Eric Clapton by using the riff from 'Layla' (you know the one), the album does throw up the odd cameo of this influence, but doesn't dwell too much on this. There are 13 tracks of solid rock pop (no relation to the Diff-Olie track) songs here that blend some rather good guitar playing with occasional organ or piano to good effect. The organ comes to the fore in 'Dream On' and 'Veriphobia', giving them a white reggae sound, with the latter having a real sting to it. 'Choose Your Destination' is what is usually described as a slow burner, however, I would refer to it as a reverse braai song. It starts quiet, but smouldering like the dying coals and builds up with occasional flames of simmering guitar flaring up and then dying down again. There is also the big flare up choruses as beer is thrown over the meat for extra flavour. 'No Regrets' is not an album that is going to set the world alight, I don't think there enough strong tracks on it, but it is a solid debut that shows promise. Released on Ugly Duck records, here's hoping that his next release will be on Swan Records. The sleeve notes contain a picture of The Duke on his throne (or a toilet as we peasants call it). Who knows one day, he may be flushed with success. Basically all those songs that we constantly get requests for here at Fresh - stuff like Crocodile Harris 'Give me the good news', Jill Kirkland's '1st of May', etc. We have always appreciated your input/ advice/ criticism, etc so what we want you to do is to send us your list of rarities, what you would like to see on this album & we'll try to accommodate as many tracks as possible! Also we are still looking for more photos of Freedom's Children!! I'll say it again - for a band that is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest band's of the period and that was photographed consistently in the late 60s/70s there is a disturbing lack of material out there! "Vriend Kerkorrel 'didn't make it', want ek het regte rock 'n roll gesoek. "Dis baie erger as wat mense dink. Soos ek praat, so skryf ek. Dis nogal outobiografies - dit begin so in die middel-tagtigs. Dit gaan 'n moerse storie wees." If you can't work out from that what kind of music Blind play then you're in the wrong review and I suggest you wander on over to Issue Number 82 of the SA Rock Digest for Kurt Shoemaker's exposition on the virtues of 'The Very Best of Four Jacks & a Jill Volume 1'. http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives Those who are still with us will realise that the Blind gig I attended at the Dublin Castle involved a lot of loud guitars, a screaming vocal performance and a lot of long hair being flung about, both on stage and in the audience. Suffering from a receeding hairline, I did feel a little left out, but still enjoyed the solid blast of sound coming from the small stage. It's the kind of gig that clears out some of the cobwebs and reminds one that one is alive. For a band that are regarded as a side line these days with guitarist Dave Friedlander concentrating on on his other band Sting Theory, and bassist Dave Mullen living in Belfast, they sound remarkable tight and leave the audience sated but still craving more. A lovely loud night out which left me wondering if the word 'Tool' on Dave's T-Shirt refered to further influences (one hopes so) and did they tie their shoes with a Slipknot? John Samson mailto:john@sarockdigest.com -------------- UPCOMING GIGS -------------- THE VENESSA NOLAN BAND WITH MORGAN THOMAS Live at the Independent Armchair Theatre - Fri 17 May In June 2001, Venessa Nolan and her current band made their first public appearance at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory. An article published in the Digest summed up the gig as "a thrill-filled two hours in the company of an important new SA talent". Now, nearly a year later, with accreditations such as Venessa’s debut album 'Burn' being voted 5th best album of 2001 by the Digest, the band (Venessa - vocals and keyboards, Jo - vocals and backing keyboards, Carl - drums, Bruce - guitar, and Morne - bass guitar) are returning to this intimate venue. The band has been off the circuit for the last 3 months apart from a couple of private functions, and during this break they have been fine-tuning their stage performance and working on new material. A recent review describes the new performance as "typically sparkling and confident". This evening will be capped by a guest appearance by the prominent Morgan Thomas doing his debut performance of the cover songs ‘Present Tense’ by Pearl Jam, and ‘Drops of Jupiter’ by Train. This has always been Morgan's dream, and the Venessa Nolan Band is honoured to transform his dream into reality. {Ag sweet man! - ed} The band has been working hard on their new material and will also be performing all the old favourites off the original ‘Burn’ album such as the modified ‘Haunted’ and ‘Glorious Gem’. The Independent Armchair Theatre, with its cosy couches and warm atmosphere is definitely the place to be on Friday night - so, bring all your friends for another "thrill-filled" evening of top quality South African talent. May 18th 2pm Meet Hugh Masekela We are once again honoured to welcome a living legend to Compact Disc Wherehouse. Based on the overwhelming response to his last visit, Hugh Masekela will once again be available to meet his fans and sign CDs. This internationally acclaimed trumpeter, bandleader, composer and lyricist is adored by his many fans, and his mix of jazz, bebop, funk and Afrobeat is renowned from New York to Dakar. Of all the musicians exiled by apartheid, it was Masekela who probably became the most noted of South Africa’s cultural ambassadors-at-large - and certainly one who has emerged unbowed from the rigours of those difficult years. Masekela takes his place among those other South African artists who, with their pan-African experience and global horizons, carved out an international landscape for South African music. Hugh’s latest release "Time" is a must-have, and he will be available to sign CD’s and meet the public. Sat. May 18th ‘Wired Up’ CD Promotion Join us at CD Wherehouse to celebrate the compilation 'Wired Up'. The compilation features bands like Staind, Nickelback, Alien Ant Farm and Puddle of Mudd (just to name a few). It's definitely not for the faint-hearted. The band was formed in 1990 by five Cape Town blues fanatics and they've been spreading the gospel ever since. During live performances they're known for swapping their regular instruments for bizzare items such as a washboard, a bass made from a tea-chest and beer-bottle slide guitars. Recently they've performed with Chicago based 'Saffire-The Uppity Blues Women' and had several sold-out shows at the Klein Karoo Kunstefees. Cape Town trio Frosted Orange play a blend of blues and spacious indie rock. Simon Orange formed the band with Albert Frost in 1995 and they performed as a duo until meeting drummer Jacques Schutte in Stellenbosch in 1999. Simon and Albert are both members of the Valiant Swart Band and the Blues Broers. They've toured and recorded with many local artists over the years but public interest in Frosted Orange grew so much in 2001 that they decided to bring out their own album. My Love Is A Leopard was recorded at Sunset Studios in Stellenbosch in September last year.
