The deal took a while to finalise as the group had previously been averse to signing with a major label. The first Battery 9 album to be released on the Gallo catalogue will be the long-awaited new release 'Sondebok', which will be released on the 1st July. This is the group's first recorded work since the album 'Wrok,' in 1998. Later in the year, the rest of the Battery 9 catalogue will be re-mastered with new tracks included and re-released. Having carved a unique name for themselves on the underground rock circuit, Battery 9 was the first South African group to experiment with industrial sounds in what was then a relatively reticent market. Staying true to their roots, they have succeeded in their quest and gone on to share the stage with some big international names, including The Prodigy and Cuban Ate. When asked for a comment on the signing, Riekert in his usual cryptic way had the following to say: "I've always felt my music deserved the muscle of a big record company behind it. Voorwaar 'n pleisier". Battery 9 http://www.cd.co.za/legends/90s/battery9_index.html ------------------- GRAHAMSTOWN FESTIVAL 2002 - MUSIC HIGHLIGHTS On this year's Grahamstown Festival Fringe (June 29 - July 6) we find the usual diverse range of SA talent including Tony Cox in his solo show, "Steelworks", as well as with Steve Newman in their 21-year association retrospective. It is impressive to see that Andrew Tracy's Steelband are still making, albeit with an altered line-up, their 23rd appearance at the festival. There are two tribute shows - "Floydian Slips" is a musical show dedicated to the story and music of Pink Floyd as performed on acoustic guitar and piano by Golden Day, and "Born To Be Wild" is a bone-crunching tribute to Heavy Metal and those bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top and Jimi Hendrix. The band is Kevin and Deon Mattheus, Donovan Hattingh and Francois Hugo. Stage-wise there's Cape Town's Graham Weir with some songs and stories, accompanied by Sven Goldin, in "How Graham Weir Has Accidentally Managed To Stay Alive" which is directed by Megan Choritz (see full article in "Concerts" below). There is also Mann Friday's rock opera called "Zimbabwe Ruins", which describes the wrenching of a young person from their homelands and their search to find a new home. Amanda Strydom's "State Of The Heart" is directed by Ian Roberts, and tells of a love story between an Afrikaans lady and an English man. SAFM will again be hosting their "Late Night Live" at the Taphuis where you can catch a variety of music acts performing live and late every night. Tickets at Computicket. ------------------ STREET LEVEL STUDIOS & PAUL BOTHNER"S "WINTER RECORDING EXPERIENCE" Street Level Studios is the well-known Cape Town recording studio that has recorded and released a string of national and regional No.1 and Top 10 hits over the past 10 years, and also picked up quite a few SAMA awards in the process. Their impressive catalogue includes releases by Black Diamond, Mgeez, Junglebook Vultures, Shooflys and The Usual. Street Level's music production aims have remained the same since opening in 1992 - to uncover and nurture new SA talent. Over the last ten years they have gained valuable musical, technical and legal insights into the record business through both success and failure. By sharing this experience and information they can assist emerging artists with their careers in an increasingly more complex industry. Street Level Studios has now teamed up with Paul Bothner Music, in association with the SA Rock Digest, to further these aims. To do this, Street Level Studios are offering a variety of economical options for anyone interested in spending some warm time over the next two months recording their debut album/ single/ jingle/ demo/ voice demo/ wedding speech. No previous experience is necessary as the studio staff will ease newcomers into the recording process and answer all their questions. The two recording packages are as follows: The "Half-Day Demo" Experience: So you've got some songs on voice and guitar or piano? Which one do you record? Why that one? Who will be interested in my style of music? What next? For R600 we'll help you select the song, advise you on content, arrangement and production & do a basic demo. You'll leave Street Level armed with an effective demo of your best song as well as the info you need to get started. The "Full-Day" Experience: So you've rehearsed your ass off - maybe even played a few gigs and it's pretty clear which songs stand up. The band is cooking and you're itching for a great live room, the best mikes, far out backline and a studio team that know what PHAT means whether it's rock, pop, alternative or kwaito. For R1000 our professional studio & team is yours for a full 8-hour day. We will be there to answer your questions on all things technical from how to get that sound on your favorite new CD to legal issues that affect you. We'll also show you how to start promoting & selling your music. Digital mastering to broadcast quality? We'll throw it in for free. Other Recent Street Level News: James Stewart (ex The Usual) has been exploring his alter ego and is releasing 'Eklektik' on the Smack!songs label. This collection of new songs, old songs and the occasional cover, also recorded at Street Level studios, is a tribute to all his influences over the years. The first two singles off 'Eklektik', 'Upside Down' and 'A Man Like Me' have both received extensive national airplay since being released as a double-A side EP in December 2001. Street Level are also proud to announce the imminent release of 'Tait: Relate' on Benjy Mudie"s Fresh Label. This is the first of two EP's to be recorded by singer/ songwriter Chris Tait at Street Level studios. Watch out for the title track - on air soon. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- JAMIE CAMPBELL - 'MY HEART IS STILL BEATING' This delicate slice of yearning trip-pop recently arrived from Port Elizabeth. Jamie Campbell lives there, is in his early 20's, and is studying marketing and working at a web studio while he builds his music career. He sang in a couple of bands through high school, culminating in the release of a track called 'The Babefool', with a group called Junk Bubble. 'The Babefool' picked up low-key airplay on a few campus radio stations around South Africa in '98. Since then he decided to disown guitar-based rock and embraced the trip-hop talents of bands like Sneaker Pimps and Morcheeba. He concentrated on writing poetry, rather than songs, and recorded a few demos, although none of them were released to radio. Most recently Jamie Campbell recorded and released 'My Heart Is Still Beating', which he wrote with his brother Paul, who also played guitar on the single and handled the programming, production, engineering and mastering. 'My Heart Is Still Beating' is an impressive, opening sibling effort. Listen to 'My Heart is Still Beating' at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 --------------------- THE RETURN OF JIMMY 12"? This Durban-based rock band have once again been making a huge impact on the KwazuluNatal rock scene, after dropping out of sight for a while following the transfer of their lead singer, Nic Olsen to Perez. The band has been drawing large crowds to their gigs in Durban over the past few months. The band is also currently working on a debut recording to be released in time for their upcoming nation-wide tour. Their debut single 'So Many Times' is steadily climbing the charts on various college stations and reached number 1 on the 5fm Modern rock charts. So it looks like Jimmy 12" are back, with their recent shows having been described as "mind blowing, with total audience hypnotism, and dance floors turning into moshpits resembling the oceans, which they call home." {Huh? - ed} For more information: http://www.jimmy12inch.co.za --------------- COMPILATIONS --------------- ABSOLUTE HIGH-ENERGY (RPM) Hi-NRG was the House Music of the 80s and this 2CD set, for just over the price of a single CD, captures that spirit perfectly. The sleeve notes are worth the price of admission alone bringing back great waves of nostalgia of growing up in the 80s in South Africa. The music has been mixed from vinyl by DJ Paul and DJ Costa and each song flows seamlessly into the next. There are 36 tracks across 2 discs including Mel & Kim's 'Respectable', Ryan Paris' 'Dolce Vita', Freeez's 'IOU' & Fancy's 'Slice Me Nice'. Getting the picture yet? How about Modern Talking, Rick Astley, Hazel Dean, Bronski Beat and Dead or Alive? This was a time when Spagna said 'Call Me' and Paul Lekakis wanted you to go back to his room to 'Boom Boom' while Marsha Raven sang 'Catch Me'. "150 Minutes of Non-Stop Double Dance" says the cover and that's exactly what it is. ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- Buy South African CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 -------------- KALAHARI.NET -------------- If you live in South African you can buy International CDs at: http://www.kalahari.net/e-trader/referral.asp?linkid=25&partnerid=1097 ------------- MORE REVIEWS ------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------------------------- CHRIS FARLOWE (Thunder Heart) ------------------------------- Part 2 of 3 By that stage, the Thunderbirds were one of the hottest live acts around town. Not only would they jam until the early hours of the morning, but some of those who hovered at the side of the stage included none other than the great Otis Redding, Eric Burdon and Jimmy Page. In the summer of '66, Farlowe smashed the charts with the Stones classic 'Out Of Time', emancipating Georgie Fame's 'Getaway'. For the remaining years of the Sixties, Chris would maintain a Stones' repertoire under the astute production and management of Oldham. Like the Rolling Stones, he rode the psychedelic wave by uprooting a jazz standard called 'Moanin', which included some riveting Indian sitar by Big Jim Sullivan. His finest single, 'Handbags And Gladrags' managed to penetrate the Top 40 in December 1967. This classic blues ballad, written by Mike D' Abo of Manfred Mann, received a commercial facelift by Rod Stewart in the years to come. When it came to studio production, Chris' back-up group was normally John Paul Jones (bass), Jimmy Page and Big Jim Sullivan (guitars), Nicky Hopkins (piano) and Ronnie Verrell on drums. By Christmas 1967, the Thunderbirds saw another major re-shuffle with the entry of Carl Palmer on drums, Pete Solley on keyboards and peddle bass, while Albert Lee remained faithful on guitar. When it came to solo albums, the one that tips the hat is his 1970 release 'From Here To Mama Rosa', which still remains highly underrated and ignored. Most of us will remember Chris when he joined the prog-jazz group Colosseum as a lead singer. By that stage Chris' vocal ability had reached three-octave proportion and his grinding live rendition of 'Rope Ladder To The Moon' by Jack Bruce has never been forgotten. He would always return to the 'Stormy Monday Blues' (T-Bone Walker), often including a scat yodel compensating the Dave Clempson guitar riff. The Chris Farlowe crowning moment is climatically driven to an orgasmic level on the lengthy 'Lost Angeles'. Colosseum live was urgent and intensely masterful. The aggressive improvisation had reached a confronting level. Up to this day Dick Heckstall-Smith still cannot believe the level to which he blew the Tenor and Alto sax at the same time For most this was the Farlowe peak, but he did remain in the John Hiseman band and also featured on the gloomy 'Daughter Of Time'. After his Colosseum experience, he briefly joined the progressive rock group Atomic Rooster, made two more solo albums ('Made In England' and 'Nice And Greasy'), and then retired. As time moved on he re-united with Albert Lee in 1975 and formed the highly acclaimed Chris Farlowe band. Amidst the Farlowe heritage lies the finest tribute to Jimi Hendrix that has ever been applied to wax, namely 'Some Mother's Son (on the run)'. To date there has never been an equal rival to this outstanding tribute that exonerates and liberates the spirit of Hendrix. For those that bathe in the Hendrix halo it would be pure blasphemy not to include this single in their tightly knit collections. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music ABSTRACT TRUTH - 'SILVER TREES' (PARLOPHONE 1970) 'Silver Trees' is not get up to get down boogie music, but is rather pleasant, mid-tempo, progressive rock, Sixties style, with some brilliant moments and bopping bits. Take the title track 'Silver Trees', for example. Timing changes, repetitive guitar riffs, guitar sounds, and keyboards mesh into a complicated song that follows a progression, then explores another idea. The bass dominates one movement, then the flute emerges. Strong on guitars, the rock roots show, but they are not black. Low-key finesse rock without thud and blunder (I suspect the live shows had a serious lack of tongue uncurling at front row teeny boppers), the lines followed by the musicians are, well, intellectual. Music for the mind to enjoy, with foot-tapping and moving in your chair allowed. These musos do rock, but don't expect "Hello, I Love You" simplicity. 'The History of Contemporary Music of South Africa' got it right in describing Abstract Truth's music as "inventive, mind-stimulating music." 'Silver Trees' strikes me as exploratory over experimental, and Abstract Truth as a band exploring musical ideas. For band cognates, Abstract Truth occasionally reminds me of an international band from about the same era, If, with a hint of John Mayall in the lead vocals. For another cognate, 'Silver Trees' rocks about as hard as Pink Floyd's 'Division Bell', which is not nearly as fierce as the great Jack Hammer. Abstract Truth was a five man band with the standard rock instruments in their line-up, with keyboards, sax, and flute. Rock? In the wide-ranging definition of rock, yes, and, in this case, progressive. The lyrics? They are minimal and of the times, 1970. This band prefers instrumental walkabouts. The lyrics are not overtly hippie, they talk of friends, girls, love, and getting along. There are some pleasant hippie-esque images: "Sleep carries her downstream, provide the music for a dream" and then a moody flute. This marvelous album is for lovers of progressive rock music, South African or otherwise. Not aggressive, but mentally stimulating. Abstract Truth http://www.new.co.za/~currin/at_index.html Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music VALIANT SWART - 'BOLAND PUNK 1988 - 2001' (Rhythm Records, 2001) Wah-wah-wah-wah!!!! Wah wah wah-wah wah!!!! Kerrrranngggg!!!. Ooops, sorry, you caught me there mid air guitar solo, playing along with Valiant Swart. Sort of a karaoke where you play along with the man, making all the guitar sounds, but let him do the singing. But why all this you may ask. Well it's because I've got 'Boland Punk' on the CD player. It's is not really a greatest hits of Valiant Swart album, mainly because it ignores a lot of the quieter blues and acoustic work that the Mystic one has done. But it is the greatest rock hits of Valiant Swart, and this is made obvious from the first "wah-wah cry baby" kitaar sound that kick starts the opening track 'Pienk Pajamas'. From thereon in expect each track to be jam packed with scorching, hard-edged guitars, most come courtesy of Anton L'Amour or Albert Frost. The cover of the album shows Valiant in classic rock pose with his guitar that has the nickname Ice Cream. I guess the nickname comes from it being white in colour, but despite this, there's nothing plain vanilla about these tracks. There are 12 tracks here, taken mostly from three of his previous albums ('Kopskoot', 'Deur die Donker Vallei' and 'Die Mystic Boer') as well as a couple from the 6 track EP 'Roekeloos'. On top of this there are remixes of 'Die Mystic Boer' (his theme song), 'International Maria' and a new track called 'Die Bom Kom', the latter causing a stir as promo copies of this were sent to radio stations just days before the tragic events of 11 September. Despite the timing of this, the track was actually written about the turn of the millennium. 'Die Mystic Boer' has always been a favourite with his fans, and always reminds me of the scene in Oliver Stone's movie about the Doors where Jim Morrison meets up with the old Indian man in the desert. The makeover of this track cements that image for me with addition of some wonderful Doors-y organ from Simon 'Agent' Orange. On top of this there are some awesomely deft guitar touches that make this an excellent version of an excellent song, and worth getting the album for, even if you've got all the other tracks already. If you're not familiar with his works, this collection serves as a great introduction to the harder sounds of Valiant while also highlighting his ability to write great lyrics about SA life. If you are familiar with his works, you probably already have this. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to jam with Valiant again, as soon as I remember where I left my air plectrum. Suffice to say that the song is not about me, but refers to the biblical couple. It also notched up Middle of the Road's 4th top 5 hit. Also joining Middle of the Road in the top 5 was Roberta Flack. 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face' was included in the soundtrack to the Clint Eastwood movie 'Play Misty For Me'. The movie starred and was directed by Clint, and was Roberta's big break. In 1982 Imagination powered up the charts with 'Just an Illusion'. Interestingly, their album 'Body Talk' was one of the best performers on the album charts, yet this did not feature 'Just an Illusion'. In fact no singles from the album made the singles charts. Starship had gone through a couple of name changes, starting out as Jefferson Airplane, the Jefferson Starship and finally as simple Starship. Apart from the name changes, the changes in personnel where too numerous to mention. Although not an original member, it was with the dynamic front lady Grace Slick that the group experienced a revival in the late 80's with 'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' following up the success of the previous year's 'We Built This City' (number 1) and 'Sara' (number 10). The film, starring Richard E. Grant, is currently being shot in Hermanus. The performance took place at Bientang's Cave, a restaurant built into a cave on the Hermanus coastline, overlooking a small bay where the famous whales come and wallow. The trio used a small sub-cavern (sometimes used as a cooking area) as their stage and produced their unique brand of music from an area just large enough to contain the three of them, all illuminated by candlelight. [It was quite a sight...] The audience was semi-stunned for the first few tracks as it must have seemed a bit alien. But they soon got the idea and soaked up the fast-paced, rhythmically powerful groove songs like "Desert Night" and "20th Century". As a result, there are now some copies of the band's CD, "The Unknown" heading off to France. The band has already performed at some unusual and adventurous gigs. The most recent was for "Pallotta Teamworks", a for-profit fundraising company based in the USA. In tandem with the British company, "Across the Divide", the "AfricanAidsTrek" took place in the Cedarburg Mountain Range. It consisted of 150 US citizens coming out to hike 25km in the Cedarburg mountains having raised $10 000 each for Aids research and various Aids-related charities (in SA and abroad) The band played two sets over two days, after being requested to stay and play a second acoustic set for the participants. The "AfricanAidsTrek" event raised upwards of R13 000 000, and as such it is obvious why "Pallotta Teamworks" is the most successful fundraising business in the USA's history. Check out their inspirational website at: http://www.pallottateamworks.com Copies of 'The Unknown' CD are currently available online from: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 And from CD Wherehouse, CT and at live performances. It had a one-off performance at The Warehouse in Greenpoint last Sunday before heading to Grahamstown. In this show Graham goes almost solo, and, accompanied by talented musician Sven Goldin, he sings mostly his own original songs and tells bizarre and wonderful stories that give us an insight into his life so far. Says Graham: "After doing a really serious show at the Baxter studio I wanted to do something light and fun. The result is truly wacky!" Megan Choritz, who directs, says: "Graham is the South African combination of David Byrne, Spalding Gray and Hunter S. Thompson, and I don"t even know how that"s possible!" She guarantees an evening of absorbing entertainment. No turn is left unstoned and no names are changed to protect the identity of anyone who comes into contact with the intrepid Graham Weir. Hear the low down on Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tina Schouw and Warrick Grier, just to name a few. Even Glenn Swart gets a mention. At the Grahamstown festival ( 28th June - 6th July). Weir will also be launching his new book "how GRAHAM WEIR has accidentally managed to stay aLIVE" at the Grahamstown Festival.
