This event has become a recognised and supported platform by the general public, musicians, DJ's, promoters, music vendors, government and other industry stakeholders as an opportunity to further develop and stimulate growth within South Africa's music infrastructure. "South African Music Week captures the beat of our nation's soul and is one of the cornerstones of the music industry," explained Rosie Katz of the MIDI Trust, "The focus this year is on live music and the importance of it to the growth of an industry. We are looking to reach as wide an audience as possible and exposure of both known and previously untapped talent." Now in its third year, the organisers represent a powerful partnership between the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST), the National Arts Council (NAC), the Music Industry Development Initiative (MIDI Trust) and, for the first time, a strategic alliance with the Proudly South African campaign. The role of South African Music Week extends far beyond merely creating an awareness of and celebrating our country's music. The organisers aim to boost the profile of South African musicians, enhance skills and strengthen networks within the industry. Added Rosie Katz, "With the experience of two successful South African Music Weeks behind us, we are confident that this year's event will be a magnificent showcase for the richly energetic and amazingly colourful rhythms, beats and melodies that form South Africa's music landscape." Ek sé ... Mamela! It's our music! See http://www.samw.co.za for details. ------------------ FRESHLY GROUND WIN CAPE EMERGING SOUNDS BAND BATTLE Freshly Ground, the dynamic seven-piece Afro-funk-jazz-fusion collective, beat off strong challenges from the other three finalists, Wild Iris, Death By Chocolate, and Juxtaplan, to win the Cape Town leg of the RP Emerging Sounds band competition at The Jam on Saturday night. Freshly Ground, who grabbed a narrow four-point victory over second-placed Juxtaplan, win some studio time and a place in the Emerging Sounds National Finals to be held on stage at this year's upcoming OppiKoppi Festival. Described as an "African Morcheeba", due to their mixed groove and sensational lead vocalist Xolani, Freshly Ground were a clear favourite with the capacity crowd. ------------------ RUSTLERS FESTIVAL (AND SHAWN PHILLIPS) COMING TO JO'BURG Do you remember those Rustlers Easter Festivals? The long drives, rain, dirt roads, traffic jams leaving Jo'burg, soggy campsites? Well all those problems are gone because Rustlers is coming to Jo'burg for the start of the World Summit. From 8 to 11 August, Rustlers is hosting the Earth Rites Festival, Rustlers style, at Riversands Farm in Fourways with camping (for those who want to), live music, DJs, performance art by BDI, décor from Emithini, a craft market and food stalls, twenty four hours a day for three days. Among the live acts appearing are the legendary US singer-songwriter, Shawn Phillips, alongside acts like Mpume, The Phoebes, and Wendy New. For full details of the event, see the 'Rock On' section below. http://www.rustlers.co.za ------------------ JUDITH WINS OVER NSJF Judith Sephuma is back home in Johannesburg after a sensational performance at this year's North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague. With the Cape Town version of this huge jazz festival now a permanent fixture on the SA calendar, the flow of artists between the two festivals is in full swing (as they say). South Africa's hottest female singing star made a triumphant debut appearance at this respected showcase of international jazz talent. She performed with her eight-piece backing band on the prestigious Statenhal main stage in front of 12 000 people, and proceeded to quickly win them over with a polished and soulful performance. That's no surprise to those who have been following Judith Sephuma's career and who have seen her in action. Sephuma has had a meteoric rise to fame this past year, and her debut album, 'A Cry, A Dance, A Smile', is rapidly approaching Gold sales status in SA. ------------------ FRUIT FLY NAVIGATORS RETURN Durban hard rock outfit Fruit Fly Navigators have announced that they will once again be appearing at this year`s Woodstock 4 Festival in September. The band has spent most of this year preparing material for their new album, which is due for release later this year. The first two singles, 'Loaded' and 'This Time', will be released to radio just before the tour in August. The tour kicks off at Burn in Durban on Saturday August 3 with Pestroy as support. The band will then move up to Johannesburg and Pretoria before heading back to Amanzimtoti. Pestroy, Evenflow, Sutherland and Akkedis will all play special guest slots at various dates on the tour. For a full tour schedule see the 'Rock On' section below. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 20 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- HENRY ATE - '96 - 02 THE SINGLES' A timely career retrospective from Karma-Ann Swanepoel, who has relocated to London to open a studio with Neal Snyman. 'The Singles' features a selection of the best tracks from her (various bands') three 'angst-pop' albums. There is also an extra bonus of four new tracks, including her catchy new single 'Finally' (which is also the final track on this collection...mmm!). Henry Ate's 1996 debut album, 'Slap In The Face', was a slow but sure grower, helped by a strong and devoted following. That album's four strongest tracks - 'Jesus Made Me', 'Henry', 'Just', and 'Hey Mister' - open this album on a sparkling note. 'Dr Pepper', 'Tuesday Afternoon', and 'One Day Soon' here represent Karma's under-rated second album 'One Day Soon', which suffered commercially from the band's ill-advised name-change to Karma. They were back as Henry Ate for the surprisingly uplifting 'Torn And Tattered' album from 2000. 'Mad Hatter' was a popular radio hit off the album, and 'She's Alright', 'Prayer', and 'Saints And Sinners' indicated that Karma-Ann's delicate musical psyche was settled, balanced, and working fine. The final four tracks here - 'Outside', 'Life', 'Hey Boy' (not a Via Afrika cover), and 'Finally' - were recorded specially for this collection, and were produced with Neal Snyman. 'Finally' is followed by an extra-bonus, hidden slower piano version of, um, 'Finally'. Point made! Karma always surrounded herself with top musicians, like long-time ally guitarist Julian Sun, bassist Brendan Ou Tim, drummers Barry van Zyl and Peter Cohen, and experienced names like Willem Moller, Peter Pearlson and Neal Snyman to produce and engineer most of her recorded work to date. The result is a collection that illustrates a creative and mature musical progression over six years, achieved without moving too far away from the bright, sweet-voiced pop that attracted us all in the first place. And despite her mostly serious public persona, when you lift this CD out of the box, underneath there's a lovely photo of Karma with a huge smile on her face. All things considered, it's been a good six years! What's next? (SS) --------------- STEVE DYER - 'SON OF THE SOIL' SA music maven, Steve Dyer, will be performing a series of dates at Manenberg's in Cape Town, to promote his latest solo album, 'Son Of The Soil'. The album was launched earlier this year at the Civic Theatre in Johannesburg, forming part of a showcase called 'Crossing the Limpopo'. The album features Paul Hanmer, Sam Mataure from Oliver Mtukudzi's band The Black Spirits, Themba Mkhize, Denzil Weale, Denny Lalouette, Marc Duby, Jimmy Mgwandi, Isaac Mtshali, Bongani Masuku and Sipho Nxumale. Steve Dyer was the director of the successful 'Mahube' project, which took its group of 12 of Southern Africa's finest musicians to the 'Out of Africa' festival in Germany in November 1997, the main stage at the Grahamstown festival in 1998 and other acclaimed dates in Holland and Belgium. Mahube also appeared at the first ever WOMAD Festival to be held in South Africa in February 1999. And the group's debut album, 'Music From Southern Africa', was launched through Sheer Sound in South Africa in October 1998, and has since been released in Europe through Challenge records, and in the U.K. through Connoisseur collection. Dyer also produced the albums 'Tuku Music', 'Paivepo' and 'Bvuma' by Oliver Mtukudzi, and directed the show 'New Directions In South African Music' on the main Grahamstown Arts Festival 1999, in which he collaborated with pianist Paul Hanmer and guitarist Menyatso Mathole, who was a founder member of Sakhile. 'Son Of The Soil' is a worthy follow-up to 'Down South In Africa', his impressive solo debut, and represents Dyer's musical homecoming to South Africa. These varied instrumental works are shaped by his building of the strong South African improvised tradition on African drumming and rhythm. Look out for tracks like 'Qinisa Indlu' and the title track, 'Son of the Soil'. Steve Dyer will be performing songs off 'Sons Of The Soil' at CD Wherehouse, and at Manenburg's in Cape Town on the 2, 3 & 4 of Aug. (See 'Rock On' below) ---------- RE-ISSUES ---------- NOVEMBER 5 - '617' This 1999 album has steadily developed a loyal cult following, despite its gradual disappearance off SA CD shelves. Abraham "Braam" Ackerman is the man behind this eclectic pop-rock collection. Braam was an original member of the Led (he was the "D" for Doctor, the "L" stood for lawyer, and the "E" for engineer), the band that he started with Skye Stevenson at Stellenbosch University. But they didn't all end up good "maties", and Ackerman left the group in its early stages and, using the name November 5, played, sang and recorded the album '617' on his PC over an eight-month period. He then spent three days mixing the album at Paris Studios in Fish Hoek with Paris Lucas. 'Otis', the first single, took November 5 into the finals of that year's Shell Road To Fame pop/rock section, where the band was narrowly beaten into second place by Jesse Jordan. When '617' was originally reviewed on the Digest we said: "Abraham has created a piece of music that will hopefully find its way into as many ears as possible, because it is really a wondrous and uplifting album. The opening track, 'Otis', is a stirring rocker that mixes scuzzy guitars with a lovely piano melody, but, from then on, the album settles down into an unbroken, beautiful groove. I imagined 'Otis' was some kind of tribute to Mr. Redding, but it is in fact a rant at a lift! ("O-tis! takes you down"). 'Tell' slows things down and 'Wish You Were Here' is not a Floyd cover but there are complimentary echoes of that song and era. 'Faces' builds slowly and emotionally and is followed by track five, called 'Five', which is simply five seconds of silence, a kind of cathartic pause in the middle of the album. It seems to work, as 'Grand Parade' then rises out of the middle of these songs with its grand pianos and sweet and soaring vocals. 'I'll See You Through' and 'Wheel' competently precede 'Jeu Veux De Toit' with its orchestral backing and simple melody, enhanced by Tertia's lovely vocals. Finally, 'Tonight' picks up the pace and gracefully brings this absorbing album to a reluctant close. Few new albums bear back-to-back listenings these days, but this one does." Braam Ackerman is currently working in London, where he is planning his follow-up album. In the meantime, copies of '617' are again available at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ---------------- MAURITZ LOTZ - 'SIX STRING RAZOR' (PT MUSIC, MLCD 700) In 1990 journeyman guitarist Mauritz Lotz released his first solo album. Aptly titled 'Six String Razor' this album of searing rock guitar instrumentals is a must-have for all lovers of the technical school of rock guitar. Mauritz rocks really hard and fast on tracks like 'Six String Razor' and 'Groove No. 2749' and then quietens down with a song like 'Desert Rain' which almost sounds like something Tananas would do. This brilliant album has now been digitally remastered by Ali Heyns and re-released on CD, distributed by PT Music. Buy Mauritz Lotz CDs from One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Mauritz Lotz http://www.new.co.za/~currin/mauritz_lotz.html ------------- COMPILATIONS ------------- VOLKSBESIT 2002 (Hoezit Music, HOEZD 66) This new CD from Hoezit Musiek is sub-titled "20 Moderne weergawes van ou bekendes", and that's exactly what it is. 20 old Afrikaans favourites such as 'Sarie Marais', 'Suikerbossie', 'Bobbejaan Klim Die Berg' and 'O Brandewyn Laat My Staan' all get a new lease on life with performances by well-known artists like Karen Zoid, Johannes Kerkorrel, Dozi, Koos Kombuis, Stef Bos, Lucas Maree, Amanda Strydom and Laurika Rauch. The best reason for buying this CD, however, is the irreverent version of 'Die Stem' by Blouklip. It's got a new beat and a few lyrical changes ("Ons dobbel in Sun City vir jou Suid Afrika") and should only be listened to if your sense of humour is fully functional. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER BUDDY MILES (Locomotive Power) Part 2 of 3 This well-timed kidnapping paid dividends a few months later at the Monterey Pop festival, where the Electric Flag received critical acclaim. Some of Buddy's finest drumming is displayed on the seminal album 'A Long Time Coming', which highlighted Bloomfield's lead guitar. Shortly afterwards, Mike left the group while Buddy maintained his consistency through the second album 'An American Music Band' and two soundtracks, 'The Trip' and 'You Are What You Eat'. In 1968 Buddy recorded his debut album, 'Expressway To Your Skull', under the auspices of his newly formed group, the Buddy Miles Express. The group's first single, 'The Train', exhibits a diverse fusion of different styles and was later magnificently re-interpreted by the British blues group, Juicy Lucy. Buddy's obsession with trains and the Union Pacific Railroad is clearly reflected in his brassy soul smoking contributions. Things started to ail when guitarist Jim McCarty, formerly with Mitch Ryder, decided to leave the Express and join the electric boogie group Cactus. At that stage Buddy had resumed his friendship with Jimi Hendrix, an old-time friend. Their relationship started in the early Sixties, when Hendrix was playing with the Isley Brothers who were often backed by a group called Ruby and the Romantics with Buddy on drums. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music James Phillips was inducted into the SA Rock Hall Of Fame on the 1st January 2002. http://www.sarockdigest.com/halloffame "Recording as a solo artist in his own name, or under the pseudonym of Bernoldus Niemand, or fronting groups such as Corporal Punishment, The Cherry Faced Lurchers (later simply called the Lurchers) and Illegal Gathering, James Phillips challenged the Apartheid system. However he is recognised here for making a lot of people realise that Rock music could be sung with a South African accent, or better still in Afrikaans. The 'alternatief' Afrikaans movement boasting such notable stars as Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Johannes Kerkorrel and more recently Karen Zoid owe a huge debt to James." James Phillips (born 22 January 1959) passed away peacefully at 6.30am on the 31st July 1995 due to complications arising from a car accident that occurred three weeks previously while in Grahamstown for the festival. This review is dedicated to his memory. JAMES PHILLIPS - 'SOUL OU' http://www.cd.co.za/legends/jamesphillips If you come to 'Soul Ou' expecting an SA version of 'Soul Man' by Sam and Dave, you'll be... a little disappointed. But If you come to this work fresh from Randy Newman or John Lennon, you'll be right at home. In fact, if you listen to 'Soul Ou' right after Phillips's 'Sunny Skies', you'll know you're in a different place in this singer-songwriter's repertoire, though not in his mind-set. If you enjoy keen, sharp, songwriting (as in "incisive" -- not as in "neat", "spiffy", or "keano"), and if you enjoy listening to a man singing passionately, accompanied only by piano or guitar, you've come to the right ou. 'Soul Ou' opens starkly with 'Africa's Dying', followed by 'Polling Day', a song hoping for the best while eschewing left or right designations. The brilliant 'Light Me A Light' has also been masterfully covered by Not the Midnight Mass on their new 'Live at the Planetarium' CD. In strong imagery, 'Pearls & Swine' talks about economic disparity. 'Sages' is ecumenical. 'Heaven' sings of the freedom train. If you don't listen closely to the lyrics, this is a pleasant and relaxing work, musically. But lyrically it is a tough work, yet gently uplifting. Phillips closes with the quietly optimistic and elegiac, 'The Fun's Not Over'. 'Soul Ou' is not for everyone. It is smoky and late night "What the hell, pour me another drink" and "I'm not in the mood for dancing" music. But for eloquent, passionate lyrics, Phillips is the ou. James Phillips http://www.cd.co.za/legends/jamesphillips Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music MAAN HARE - VALIANT SWART (Rhythm Records) Hey Valiant what the hell are moon hairs? Is that like in "moonhair worrie nie"? Okay so I was probably one of the first souties to ask Mr Swart what Maanhare means, and for those of you out there who don't know it's a mane as in a lion's mane. But these ou's don't make it easy for us as the CD cover features a grainy black and white shot of Valiant looking cool under a cartoon moon. (A bald moon as far as I can tell). Okay having dispensed with the bad pun, let's get down to the music. This album is about poetry and motion. There is a real sense of movement through vast open spaces in the music here. This is your soundtrack to your drive through the Karoo. The top's down on the car, the wind cascading through your hair and Maanhare is blaring from the stereo. You're going nowhere, in no rush to get there, but most important is that you're moving. The steady rhythm section sets the cruise control, the guitar is your best friend and occasionally there is the lone howl of a stray harmonica. There are quieter tracks for those moments when you pull over and sit by the side of the road, contemplating the beauty of your surroundings and having a long hard look inside yourself. The fragile and beautiful 'Sonvanger', the aching 'Helfte van Die Maan' and the quiet almost whispered 'Weeskante' are wonderful time-outs on the album. It's not just the music that conjures up images in the mind. The lyrics, as with all of Valiant's work, are pure poetry. Lines like 'Wentel my spirits in 'n silwer spiraal', from 'Waar Die Dromers Dwaal', 'swem sy met fosfor en pérels' from the lilting and uplifting 'Matrooslied' and 'hier begrawe ek my drome in die sagte warm grond' from 'Weeskante' are but a few examples of the lyrical talent of the man. The Mystic Boer-ish title track is destined to become a classic with its country tinged blues sound, racy pace and half sung/half spoken lyrics. 'Horison Hotel' (a block down from Morrison Hotel) and 'Whiskey en Reën' are fine examples of melancholic blues rock while 'Diep in die Bos' features some awesome drumming from Barry van Zyl and top guitar playing by Valiant himself, and this on a album featuring both Albert Frost and Anton L'Amour. Here is definitely a boytjie who's been to the deep south of America. This album is a progression from the brilliant 'Deur die Donker Vallei'. It is the sound of a gentle spirit wandering the countryside, drinking in the sights, sounds, experiences and the cheap whiskey and crafting this into some of the finest country rock blues that has been committed to disc. When it comes to quality albums, Valiant is definitely the mane man. Dr Hook we also topping the chart ten years later with 'Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk'. Cat Stevens classic 'Morning Has Broken' also moved into the top 5. Billy Ocean's 'Red Light (Spells Danger)' was his first Top 20 hit in SA. He would have to wait a further 7 years before he really hit the big time, scoring 3 number 1's in the period 1985 - 1988. Joe Dolan meanwhile enjoyed his 3rd week at the top. 1982 was the year of Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo (with you) as local lad, John Ireland took his rather raunchy ballad 'I Like' into the top 5. The song became a classic and appears on numerous compilation CD's although surprisingly none of Ireland's albums have made a CD re-release (yet). Also new to the top 5 in 1982 was the cheerleader chant 'Mickey' by one hit wonder Toni Basil. Mel & Kim re-entered the top 5 after slipping from 4 to 6 the previous week, while Whitney was looking to dislodge the Cannibals. Club Nouveau's remake of the Bill Withers classic 'Lean On Me' failed to make the top spot. Despite having topped the charts and shifted a million units in the US, this must have come as big blow to them. South African's at number 1 this week: Paradise Road - Joy (1980) Also this week, Clout's 'Substitute' reached no. 2 on the UK charts. Aimed mostly at the Afrikaans ex-pat community, the festival boasted some top names in Afrikaans entertainment such as Laurika Rauch, Theuns Jordaan and Steve Hofmeyr. However, the main drawcard for this Rock Digest correspondant had to be the appearance of Die Mystic Boer, Valiant Swart. Valiant was the star of Friday's opening Gala evening, which took place in a large Gym hall and featured speeches by the various sponsors and Mathews Phosa as well as some songs by Lucas Maree and London based Piet Planter. A lone figure on a rather large stage, one couldn't help feeling occasion demanded his band to give the show a solid blast, however, Valiant played a great set which was warmly received by the audience. He introduced us to his new guitar, an Afri-can guitar made from an old BP Oil can. It's quite amazing the sound that can be obtained from an old oil blik. Playing old favourites and material from his new album 'Maanhare', the Mystic one made numerous new fans, including one Mathews Phosa. After Valiant, most of the audience took their leave to indulge in a bit of sokkie with Ollie Viljoen en sy Boere Orkes, while a few die hards stayed to watch Dorp. Despite numerous technical hitches, the band performed professionally and gave their all. Saturday saw the festival start in earnest. On offer from the various stalls was all those things that ex-pats miss, Ouma's Rusks, Mrs Balls Chutney, Boerewors Rolls, Sosaties, Bunny Chows, Castle Lager and Fanta Grape, to name a few. On the music front, I caught a bit of Steve Hofmeyr's show, and despite not being a fan of his music, I must confess I was impressed with his stage presence, showmanship and strong voice. He had the crowd eating out of his hands. The other show I saw some of was Laurika Rauch whose band included Wouter van de Venter whose album 'Donkerkant' was recently in the Rock Digest Album charts. Laurika also delivered a slick professional show and was much appreciated by the audience. Both these shows were in another large Gym hall. Valiant Swart had another show in a smaller more intimate venue, and it was another quality show where he had the audience enraptured, especially for the final song 'Die Mystic Boer' a song which every time I've seen him play it live, has had a profound effect on the audience. All in all, the festival seemed to have been a success and judging from the reaction of people on the train heading back to London was thoroughly enjoyed. My personal opinion was that, given the evergrowing pool of quality Afrikaans Rock artists, perhaps we could have seen more of these. However, this is only the second year of the festival and hopefully as it grows we will see more of these artists. John Samson mailto:john@sarockdigest.com -------------- I SAW THE WHOLE OF THE MOON Cutting Jade and Wonderboom @ The Shepherd's Bush Empire 26 July 2002 What is it with South African musicians and the moon? They sing about it (Koos Kombuis - 'Wrapped around the Moon', Piet Botha - 'Donkermaan' and Valiant Swart - 'Die Helfte van die Maan' to name a few), they often play at the Half Moon in Putney and when Wonderboom take to the stage, it's not long before drummer Danny de Wet moons. To be fair to him it was in the name of art as he was explaining the lyric 'left behind'. In fact a number of lyrics of the Wonderboom set are visually explained by Danny, tracing the outline of Africa with his finger in the air during the cover of Johnny Clegg's 'Africa' and being a cowboy, genius, raskop and all the other things that Johnny is during the witsblitz version of Koos Kombuis' 'Johnny is nie Dood nie' (except uitgepass). All this just adds energy and humour to what the rest of the band is doing. Cito on vocals is a true rockstar with swagger, poise and attitude aplenty. He twists, contorts and gyrates around the stage, roaring the songs while the two guitarists, Martin and Wade are constantly on the move. Martin joins Cito on vocals for the Rock Kwaito version of 'Charlie' and it's quite a sigh to behold the two of them, both stripped to the waist bouncing up and down on stage like a couple of, err... Rabbitts? The band hurtle through their set of original tunes and cover versions that they made their own on the CD 'Rewind'. Despite all the energy, excitement and sheer blast of the Wonderboom set, we cannot forget to mention Cutting Jade who opened the show. A young band, they delivered a solid set of blasting rock, tight and confident. Maybe not quite as dynamic as Wonderboom, but they do a good job of warming the audience up nicely. The band seems to be going from strength to strength and based on this performance look to go further still. Despite a rather poor turnout both bands gave their all and produced an great evening of rock music that scores high on the jol-ometer.
