SA ROCK DIGEST ISSUE #166 http://www.sarockdigest.com http://www.cd.co.za 12th August 2002 Established 27th January 1999 ----------*********----------- FREE & EXCLUSIVE MP3 WITH THIS ISSUE! http://www.samp3.com New and exclusive MP3s added every week. To launch the new South African MP3 website at http://www.SAMP3.com (see 'News' below) we are running a unique competition over the next six weeks. SA melodic rock band, Off The Edge, recently released their fourth official CD, 'Unfinished Business'. During these sessions, Off The Edge mainman, Peter Hanmer (no relation to Paul), recorded a ten-minute epic piece entitled 'Space Dream'. In good prog-rock tradition, this suite has five individually named sections. Every week we will be giving away one section of this unheard and unreleased track in random order, as well as a bonus unreleased sixth song by Off The Edge. What you need to do is download and listen to each of these sections over the next six weeks, and then tell us what the right order is, and which song doesn't belong in the 'Space Dream' suite. Remember, there are six pieces to download, but only five make up 'Space Dream'. At the end of the competition five lucky winners will win a special limited edition release of 'Unfinished Business' by Off The Edge, with a bonus CD containing the full 'Space Dream' track. So, to start off, please go to http://www.samp3.com/competition.html and download 'Encounter' by Off The Edge and then come back every week to collect them all! Visit the official Off The Edge website at: http://www.cd.co.za/offtheedge The hosting of MP3s on http://www.samp3.com is thanks to the Future Perfect Corporation http://www.futureperfectcorporation.com - Building online communities to make the future perfect. -------------- IN THIS ISSUE -------------- SAMP3.com launches with a unique competition and an unheard track from Off The Edge... All the tracks on the Top 20 MP3 charts will be available for streaming and/or downloading online, as well as a growing list of other South African songs of all genres, past, present and future. The Top 20 Albums charts stay the same with almost all of those albums having MP3 samples available as well. All the tracks available for MP3 download at SAMP3.com are authorised by the respective artists, and all the albums and EP's from which these songs are taken, are available for sale online at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Despite the ongoing debate about MP3s, it is now clear that many contemporary SA independent artists understand the usefulness of allowing the free downloading of MP3s to draw attention to the artist's full album. It started as a 78 single that was used to attract new fans to an "album" filled with other 78s by the same artist. Then followed the vinyl album as we know it, with some extra 7" seven singles (45's) also pressed for sale and for radio stations. With seven singles being far cheaper to produce than albums, production soared and extra cash was generated for the artist and the record company. Then followed the singles and album sales charts. The seven single became the 12" single, then the cassette single, and eventually the CD single or CD EP (extended play). But the similarly high costs involved in producing either CD singles or albums, have mostly closed that avenue as an economical method whereby independent artists can promote their CD albums. So what these artists may lose in revenues from giving away their MP3s free online, they gain in exposure and album sales. Remember that it needs only one person to buy the album and illegally make the entire album available online as a series of MP3s, anyway. That is the old reality, SAMP3.com is the new. A large proportion of visitors to SARockDigest.com and SAMP3.com, and customers of OneWorld, are international. While Local is Lekker, promoting and selling SA music to the World is Wonderlik! Anyone wishing to authorise their tracks for inclusion on samp3.com and possible chart placing, please go to http://www.samp3.com/faq.html For further info on this topic, please have a look at what singer-songwriter Janis Ian had to say about MP3s at: http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html ------------------- SHAWN PHILLIPS GETS SA AWARD Texan Shawn Phillips, the legendary New Age singer-songwriter, is back in SA for his third SA tour, and to launch his new CD, 'No Category'. Despite his uncompromising attitude towards commercialism, he is finally being honoured by the music industry with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. Four of his 17 CD's - '2nd Contribution', 'Collaboration', 'Faces', and 'The Best of Shawn Phillips' - have achieved Platinum sales status. During his first SA tour, Universal Music gave him a Platinum award for consistent sales of '2nd Contribution' over a 25-year period. On August 15, Universal Music SA will again be honouring Phillips with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award'. 'No Category' was produced and engineered by his old friend, Paul Buckmaster, who produced three of his previous works, and who also won a Grammy award in 2000 as "Best Producer". http://www.shawnphillips.com Contact Arlo Hennings at mailto:manager@shawnphillips.com or at mailto:guitarlo@mn.rr.com ------------------- MOODPHASE5IVE OFF TO EUROPE Moodphase5ive are heading off for a 15-date tour of Europe, following this month's European release (via Lowlands) of the group's second album, 'In Superdeluxe Mode'. 'Got to Give', the first single off the album featuring the all-girl Afrikaans rap trio Godessa, is currently riding high in the charts on Good Hope FM, Metro FM, RMR, UCT Radio, Matie FM and others. The Cape Town group will be performing mostly in the Netherlands, including sharing a bill with Morcheeba at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, and will also be taking their unique and hip sound to Germany and to Belgium (for an appearance at the Pukkelpop Festival). The tour also includes a highly demanded visit to the Roxy Praha club in Prague, where their 'Praha Paradise' hit has achieved cult status in the name-checked Czechoslovakian capital. The band will also be appearing alongside the burgeoning list of talent now appearing under the African Dope banner on the two upcoming African Dope CD compilations, 'Cape Of Good Dope' and 'African Dope Volume 2'. The next MoodPhase5ive album is expected around October. For a full list of those European tour dates, please see 'Concerts' section below. The acoustic duo is heading out on a national tour during September to further promote the album. The tour will move through Pretoria, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Durban. It includes appearances at the OppiKoppi Plunge Festival (Sept 7) and the Awesome Africa Festival in Durban at the end of the month. It's been four years since we last saw them play live, see all those dates in the 'Rock On' section below. Some recent review snippets on 'Bignity': "This could quite easily be the best South African non dance music album I've ever heard. Not this week, or this year, but ever. ...this is definitely one of the best albums I've had the privilege of listening to." - Nathan Zeno (SL Magazine: August 2002 - album of the month 'Bignity') "Each album these respective players releases shows a growth, maturity and an unashamed identity to the music they write... Explore the magic, but let it lead you and guaranteed it will excite you if intelligent music is what drives you." - Faan Herholdt (Die Burger) Buy 'Bignity' at One World: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=shif004 -------------------- INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL 15 -25 August 2002 The International Classical Music Festival of South Africa is an event that, apart from offering music lovers some spectacular events, has a strong educational dimension. CDs - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES -------------------------------------------- ----------- RE-ISSUES ----------- FALLING MIRROR - 'ZEN BOULDERS & THE STORMING OF THE LOFT' The second Falling Mirror release on Benjy Mudie's RetroFresh label is a "twofer", with the band's debut 'Zen Boulders' sitting snugly alongside their second album, 'The Storming Of The Loft' on one CD. This is the first in RetroFresh's '2 for 1' series, and the band's third album, 'Fantasy Kid' and their final unreleased album (recorded in 1996), 'Hammerhead Hotel' could also appear in this extremely economical and worthy form. This clearly shows Mudie's devotion to this unique '80's Cape Town band, recently acknowledged as his personal favourite out of all of the South African artists and bands that he worked with and supported, and who have been re-released through the RetroFresh label. The full, strange story of the two cousins, guitarist Allan Faull and vocalist Nielen Mirror, can be found at the Falling Mirror website at http://www.cd.co.za/fallingmirror. These are the extended liner notes by Stephen Segerman that originally appeared on the 2001 CD release of the band's fourth album, 'Johnny Calls The Chemist'. The liner notes for the 'Zen Boulders/The Storming Of The Loft' CD re-issue were written by Benjy Mudie and explain his feelings on first hearing the group after being alerted by Tully McCully, and on a song-by-song basis. 'Zen Boulders' was a bold opening statement, filled with Nielen's sinister-sweet lyrics and Allan's guitar genius. Songs like 'I Am The Actor', 'Time Is A Thief' and the original 'Making Out With Granny' impressed the critics of the day, but not the SA rock customers. Undaunted, Falling Mirror headed back to McCully's Spaced Out Sounds Studio and recorded an album influenced by Nielen's attempts to woo a loft-living potential girlfriend. This was the sound of a band in full throttle, from the opening Doors-like 'Highway Blues' and the radio-rocker, 'Neutron Bop', to the touching 'If I Was James Dean' and the chilling 'We Build A Big Fire'. The 17 tracks on display here show a band emerging from a dark past to a settled sound. Two great albums for the price of one. Download an MP3 of 'Then It Turns Around' from the, as yet, unreleased 'Hammerhead Hotel' album at http://www.samp3.com More info on Falling Mirror at: http://www.cd.co.za/fallingmirror -------------- COMPILATIONS -------------- VARIOUS - 'PASHASHA' With the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the Cricket World Cup on the horizon, BMG have released this 16-track compilation of the best songs by that label's brightest names and others to cater for all those visitors seeking a decent SA music compilation to take back home. 'Pashasha' is Sowetan slang for "It's all good", and features names like Vusi Mahlasela ('Silang Mabena'), Judith Sepuma ('A Cry, A Smile, A Dance'), Tananas ('Hard Hat Jive'), TKZee ('Pafalafa'), and Selaelo Selota ('Ma Modiegi'). ------------- MORE REVIEWS ------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4. HISTORY ------------ SHILOH'S CORNER SNOWY WHITE (BIRD OF PARADISE) Part 1 of 3 It was the Isle Of Wight concerts that delivered an impressionable blow on a teenage ukulele player named Terence White. During his early days he was nicknamed "Snowy", and featured in a three-piece group called The Train. His early influence came from his father, a drummer in the Don White Dance Band, who had donated a reel-to-reel tape recorder to him. This proved useful in capturing BBC broadcasts. Snowy claims that Clapton's guitar solo on 'Stepping Out', recorded with John Mayall, had persuaded him to sell the ukulele and embrace the guitar. During his teen years he featured with a rehearsal band called Heavy Heart, and backed Joan Armatrading on various radio broadcasts. The drummer for Heavy Heart happened to know Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac fame, and, on a spontaneous whim, decided to phone him with the possibility of a jam. This developed into a lengthy friendship, which would bear fruit in the years to come. Snowy's first studio recording was released in 1974 when he featured on guitar for Jonathan Kelly and his band Outside. Things started developing when Snowy teamed up with a bass player called Kuma Harada, who had just arrived from Amsterdam after playing with Jan Akkerman on the production of 'Hair'. Snowy became highly recommended for his definitive guitar solos on his 1957 'gold top' Les Paul. By 1975, Snowy was in demand as one of the most capable and reliable session guitarists in London. His next assignment was a short stretch with the group Cockney Rebel thanks to ex-Stud Jim Cregan. Snowy basically supported the group on their live UK tour before replacing Tim Renwick in the Al Stewart Band. Snowy's strength was his ability to perform live, and everybody wanted him. After a forceful tour in the USA with Al Stewart he was offered sessions with Sci-Fi author and Hawkwind associate Michael Moorcock. The group released one album, 'The New World's Fair', featuring violinist Simon House and Alan Powell. {Snowy was seen recently in South Africa on the Roger Waters tour, more at http://www.cd.co.za/rogerwaters/270202.html - ed} Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music KOOS KOMBUIS - 'EQUILIBRIUM' (Rhythm Records RR033) I first played this CD with a sense of expectancy. I expected a well-written work of Some Significance, one making astute comments on life in SA, on life in the world. For the most part, I am not disappointed, and for the smaller part I am still translating the Afrikaans. What I got was a dramatic work, mostly of folk songs. 'Equilibrium' opens with the pretty 'Picasso se Klavier', I mean 'Picasso se Song'. Then there's the bittersweet 'Wrapped Around the Moon'. The third track, exceedingly rockworthy, is 'Sestien Jaar met 'n Vals Kitaar'. With its starry chorus and name-dropping lyrics, it demands replay. Speaking of name-dropping, to those who follow South African rock, no matter the language, friends like Valiant Swart, Albert du Plessis, Schalk Joubert, and others pop up on the songs. 'Sestien Jaar met 'n Vals Kitaar', and some of the more moody songs, on the CD, showcase Koos's dual strengths: He's great at the personal folk song, the volk song if you will, and he plays a dynamic rock song. The title tune is a bizarre slice of psychedelia. If it's not the title track, 'Equilibrium met Lithium' (assumed not to be a plug for a band) uses the CD title. But all things being equal, whatever it takes to find balance, fine. This rocking and thoughtful CD works for me. 'Equilibrium met Lithium' is still a strange song, though. Overall, this album showcases Koos's strengths: playing and singing songs he wrote. 'Equilibrium' and has thoughtful moments and up-tempo times, too. A talent of Koos's I admire is his strong sense of drama. Throughout these songs, though sometimes languishing in pleasant, there is a dramatic delivery (as in 'Oorlog van der Lem'). When Koos says "Bye" at the end of 'Bach by die Voortrekkermonument' -- to me it's like he has finished a nice visit, or a live set. Folk outweighs rock, and it's a good balance. Listen to an MP3 of 'Sestien Jaar Met 'n Vals Kitaar' at http://www.samp3.com Buy this CD at: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=rr033 More about Koos Kombuis at: http://www.cd.co.za/legends/kooskombuis Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music THE DOLLY ROCKERS - 'GLORY GLORY' (Indie, released March 2002) http://www.cd.co.za/legends/90s/dolly_rockers.html The mad one out of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett sang a song called 'Dolly Rocker'. The song was about a dress of the same name which was fashionable around that time. I'm not sure whether South Africa's Dolly Rockers are named after Syd or the dress, but one thing's for sure, they don't do things Barrett Fashion. 'Glory Glory' is the sound of thousands of teenage boys sitting in their bedrooms, trying to come to terms with the transition from lighty-hood into manhood and all the angst and pain that brings. However this is done through adult eyes and therefore has the advantage of being more measured and slick. This is not a happy album. Titles like 'Consume Me', 'Pain' and 'Kissing the Coroner' tell you that before the laser touches the disc. It opens with an ominous Jaws Theme type sound warning you to tread with caution. This gives way to a hollow guitar and imploring vocal which is maintained throughout the album with the instrumentation being sparse, with mournful, sometimes broody guitars, while Greg Donnelly's vocals range from aching and edgy to grizzly and gravelly. Despite this, there are also some uplifting moments. 'Change the World' and 'Oh My God' have more of a lilt to them while the title track is triumphant without the celebration. 'Sleepytown' borders on being full on rock with some heavier guitar and faster pace. This sounds like the record a lot of the 80's indie bands were trying to make, but none seemed to succeed with. It's sort of a gothic Smiths album, measured jangling guitars, somewhat ethereal with a bit of Bauhaus darkness thrown in for good measure. It has what those 80's albums lacked - slick production and a polished sheen. Despite this 80's comparison, it does not sound dated, and feels like it can bear the label 'timeless', although only time can tell on that front. She was the first South African act to top the charts since Charisma's 'Mammy Blue' had dropped off the top spot in the second week of that year. Although she was born in Wales Jessica had lived long enough in the country for her to be classified as local. Neil Diamond was also riding high with his 8th top 20 hit in 4 years, 7 of these 8 had made the top 10. Alan Garrity was spending his 9th week in the top 20 and his second in the top 5. Space sat at the top in 1977 with their instrumental piece 'Magic Fly'. It was one of only a handful of instrumental pieces that topped the charts. Others being Booker T & the MG's 'Time is Tight' and the Klaxtons' 'Clap Clap Sound'. Survivor meanwhile where rushing to the top of the charts with their theme from Rocky III (the song had been commissioned by none other than Sylvester Stallone himself). Australian John Farnham was also moving up the charts. 'You're the Voice' was a track from his 'Whispering Jack' album. The album sold over a million copies in Australia and was the first by an Australian to do so. John (aka Johnny) Farnham also had a huge hit in Australia in 1967 with 'Sadie The Cleaning Lady'. Liewe skattie, You're my beaded love-letter, my breeze in the night, You're my coffee, my Cremora, my Blitz firelight. You're my Crime-Stop, my Tracker, you're my AZT, My pap, my Mrs. Ball's chutney, my Nando's for free. You're my lambchop, my dewdrop, my partner in crime, My chilli, my pepper, my vetkoek sublime. The list is just endless and this isn't all, You're my Lotto jackpot, my dop and my zol. You're my 4X4 when the road is so hilly, You're the Floro margarine that butters my mielie, I smaak you, my poppie, so please be my wife, 'Cause, Babe, you're the Tomato Sauce on the slap chips of life. {This could probably be sung to the tune of 'You are my sunshine', could'nt it? - tuneless ed} --------------- SPRINGBOK HITS http://www.new.co.za/~currin/sa_springbok.html Kobus is looking for the track listings for the following volumes of the Springbok Hit Parade albums: 28, 34, 37, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 52, 53, 55, 58, 59, 61 and up The best of 75/76, 76/77, 77/78, 78/79. I make my way through the throngs of bankers who have overflowed out of the pubs onto the pavements, enjoying the vaguely warm weather and vaguely warm beer. The venue is a large airy room with high ceilings on the sides of the room and a lowered portion in the middle in front of the stage. Ceiling fans on the sides turn furiously, creating quite a breeze. And talking of breeze, Michelle Breeze and the rest of the band make a low key entrance on stage and launch into their first number. Like most bands, the lead singer in the centre of attention, but I found here that the band seemed to be even more in the background than normal. But that wasn't because they weren't any good. They were extremely professional and competently got on with their business without any airs and graces. This left Michelle free to drag the audience in with her breathy whispered vocals, or whip them up to a frenzy with her snarling angry venting. She is an emotional performer, often seeming to climb inside herself as she stands trance like with her eyes closed, feeling the music and vibe around her, being a part of it, but somehow detached. Sometimes she would hide behind her fringe, or fling it wildly around depending on the pace of the music. It was a slick, professional show and quite sophisticated. As I walked back to Liverpool Street station, one of the big commuter stations in the city, I'm surrounded by the bankers, now quite inebriated, all heading home from the closing pubs. In some ways this fits in with the gig, professional, but with it's hair let down. Written and performed by Philip Swiegers. Directed by Gaye Barbour Frustrated Phil sings RUGBY SONGS FOR THE DIFFIDENT A "fresh" look at the life and culture of South Africans, with original songs, common calumny, and hysterical political overtones. LIVE at the OLYMPIA BAKERY, KALK BAY, AUGUST 13 - 17 and 20 - 24 INCLUDING VENISON DINNER - "PUT THE MEAT BACK INTO 'SPRINGBOK'!" The protection of majority rights under the constitution claims supreme thematic status in this production - minorities like females and the Thompson Gazelle are also mentioned. Individual, original compositions deal in honest sympathy with such as millionaires, gays, farm labourers, the deceased, and those who play the game. The show had its premiere during the Hermanus Whale Festival of 2001, and is currently on tour. "BLACK LABEL" draws a predominantly bilingual South-African pseudo-intellectual and quasi-sporting audience of people on their way to London.
