Although the band is known for maintaining tight creative control (the highly praised cover design for their debut album was the lead guitarist's work), the band has decided to launch the competition because, according to a band spokesman: "The competition is about challenging our own preconceptions and sharing ownership with our fans. Musically, we don't like to be typecast, so we thought it would be interesting to see how others interpret our music and what we're about. An important aspect to the competition will be a special gallery on our website, where fans can view all the entries and give the band and the designers feedback". Top designs will be showcased in the Musica Merchandise area at Woodstock 4 in Heidelberg from the 26-29th of September. Designers are invited to submit designs by e-mail and/or on stiffy/CD-ROM before Monday the 23 September 2002. First prize is a R1000 Musica voucher, and massive public exposure in CD stores, on posters and band merchandise. He is a natural, blessed with the gift of song". Vusi Mahlasela's new (Spring!) album, 'Jungle Of Questions' was recorded with the Proud Peoples' Band. It features 16 new songs that incorporate several musical styles including his trademark rootsy Afro Folk, mixed up with some deeply groovy Afro Jazz-influenced tunes, soulfully smooth ballads as well as the usual sublime collaborative work, all sung in a dazzling range of South African languages. There's Vusi's updated take on the classic Sotho wedding song, 'Tswang Tswang Tswang', and several other strong tracks like 'Di-ana', 'Mma Modiane', 'Mamelodi', 'Vulani Amasango', 'How Can It Be?' (the latter features multi-instrumentalist Pops Mohamed) and 'Kolozwana'. The album may feature a number of up-tempo dance-floor tunes and love ballads, but also reflects Vusi's deep poetic sensibilities as he highlights a number of important social issues, including a haunting tribute to the late Sarah (Saartjie) Baartman. A song off Mahlasela's previous album, Miyela Afrka', spawned Proud People's Band, his full time backing group. The Mamelodi-based six-piece outfit is an exciting blend of vast experience and youthful talent, and the last two years have seen them hit the live circuit hard alongside Vusi, including a stint opening for global superstar Sting during his 2001 South African tour. The band featured is the Safro Jazz Quintet, comprising Marcus Wyatt, Kevin Gibson and Victor Masondo. The vision behind the formation of the Safro Jazz Quintet, is to use the band as a developmental platform for young, up-and-coming talented South African jazz musicians in the same tradition established by the great African-American drummer Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. 'Africans in Space' is the second solo album from horn man Marcus Wyatt. Newly inspired after spending most of 2001 in Amsterdam, Marcus returned to record this very personal album. The majority of the songs on the album were written while overseas, and even though Marcus found himself away from home, the tracks have a greater South African sound and feel to them than ever before. This album also gave Marcus an opportunity to work with some of his favourite South African musicians like Kesevan Naidoo (drums), Herbie Tsoaeli (acoustic bass), Mark Fransman (piano, Fender Rhodes), Sydney Mnisi (tenor & soprano sax), Andile Yenana (piano) and Nonthuthuzelo Puoane (female vocalist supreme). Sheer Sound will be launching Hotep Galeta's 'Malay Tone Poem' album in Cape Town at Manenberg's on Friday 13th, and Marcus Wyatt's 'African In Space' album on Saturday 14th September at the same venue. See 'Concerts' section below for details. The first Deep Purple line-up formed in London in 1968 as a group called Roundabout, so-named by one of their original members, the ex-Searchers drummer, Chris Curtis. Curtis recruited Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore who were at that stage residing in Germany. The new recruits were well-honed veterans of the Sixties with Ritchie cutting his teeth as a lead guitarist for Mandrake Root, Screaming Lord Sutch and finally the Outlaws under the Joe Meek umbrella. Jon Lord, who erupted out of the R&B combo the Artwoods alongside drummer Keef Hartley, had also been a one-time member of The Flowerpot Men (England's answer to the Beach Boys). Lord's Hammond B3 ability was above average and well tempered during the mid sixties as a member of the Santa Barbara & Machine Head blues combo which included Ron Wood on guitar. In spring 1968 the group became Deep Purple, on the insistence of Ritchie Blackmore (apparently inspired by Ritchie's grandmother's favorite song), and signed to Parlophone in the UK. A Midas motion was contracted in the early days when they also signed up with a US label called Tetragrammaton, run by comedian Bill Cosby. The Deep Purple story continues next week... {Deep Purple are currently on a tour of the UK featuring new keyboardist Don Airey with Jon Lord making a "guest" appearance for a few numbers. Other guests at this past Saturday evening's gig at the Hammersmith Odeon included Janick Gers, Bruce Dickinson and Nicko McBrain (from Iron Maiden) playing on 'Smoke On The Water' (an anthem first recorded 30 years ago!). - ed} The Deep Purple Web Index http://www.cd.co.za/deeppurple Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music ROGER LUCEY - 'THE ROAD IS MUCH LONGER...' (3RD EAR, 1979) http://www.new.co.za/~currin/roger_lucey.html This is some really tight ensemble playing, an album of lively music and serious lyrics; songs of social protest, folk of the social consciousness sort. The songs nourish the mind, body, and soul. Among the ten musicians credited here are several familiar names: Kenny Henson, John Oakley-Smith, and Jonathan Clegg. David Marks, whose work has great interest for me, produced 'The Road Is Much Longer...'. In fact this album was released in 1979 on Marks's label, 3rd Ear Music. Lucey's songs are instrumentally rich, pulsing bass and horns and all. The album's flow has more than the obligatory slow song per album side, but rather presents a variety of tempos. The songs are rollicking, lively, fun-sounding affairs that satisfy with truly intelligent and purposeful lyrics. In fact, the lyrics are harsh indictments of the authorities and social conditions of the day. The lyrics are so honest, kicking and naming names, that it is no surprise that Lucey was hounded by the police as recounted at the 3rd Ear website http://www.3rdearmusic.com/forum/footsoldier.html The first two songs are about the struggle in general terms. Under ordinary circumstances, the title track might have been a radio hit. Then the album turns specific with a protest song about a man who died while under arrest ('Lungile Tabalaza'), to gathering what we call deposit bottles for a living, the police breaking into a man's home ('Crossroads'), a song that mentions Biko ('Thabane'), and so to a general social consciousness song to end the album ('No Change'). Roger's voice gets a workout because these songs are rather wordy compared to "Ooh-ooh, I love you baby" songs. He injects some venom into his songs, but his clear voice is suited for saying something. The lyrical meat and muscle here is well served in a musical setting that encourages one's head to keep time. This excellent album is a document of the time, a signpost album from SA's rock history, and a window into the mind, temper, and struggle. These songs take themselves seriously but remember that they are songs, not political tracts. Roger and company made music to be heard. To look at the role music played in that recent history, many listened. Listen to Roger Lucey MP3s at http://www.samp3.com/artists_l_s.html Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music SEA LEVEL - URBAN CREEP With it's viola driven intro, I'm immediately tempted to regard Urban Creep as the South African Waterboys (or should that be What a Boytjie's) and there certainly is a similarity in the sound. By the time I get to track 11 'To the World', I have no doubts what influenced the group as the songs starts with the lyric 'I'm beginning to hear the sound of the big music/ The [Mike] Scott's been singing in his sailing ship'. However, they lyricist claims to have been 'singing this song since '73'. So now I'm not so sure about the Waterboys influence. What I can say is that if you want a reference point then you can look at the Waterboys. You would not however be too far amiss, if you looked at the Lurchers 'Sunny Skies' for another reference point, or even Syd Kitchen's 'Africa's not for Sissies'. And yes, there's also some Prefab Sprout in there so there's a lot here to digest. There's a viola 'Amazing Grace' tucked into 'Universe' and a lyric sample from the soul classics 'Try a Little Tenderness' and 'Respect'... and... and... So then why should you go out and buy this album? Because it's good, darn good. It's intelligent, it (to use a cliché) rocks, and it's got tons of references to Southern Africa. Swaziland, KwaMashu, Francistown all get name checked, and there's a pair of takkies (or trainers for non South Africans) which give it a homely feel. Rock you can relate to. Aside from that, 'Tripping on Moonshine' is one of those delicate rock tunes that you can play over and over without ever tiring. These Urban Creeps (Chris Letcher, Brendan Jury, Didier Noblia and Ross Campbell) may have the expanded sound of the big music, but they have scaled it to fit neatly into South Africa. The question to be answered is does the appearance of Chris Letcher on an album make it lecherous? I think that you the Jury will certainly see that it doesn't, it just adds quality. Supertramp's 'Give a Little Bit' was taken from the album 'Even in the Quietest Moments' which was the precursor to the seminal 'Breakfast in America'. This was their first top 20 hit in South Africa and fared better than is did in the UK (#29) and the US (#15). 'The Living Daylights' by A-ha was the theme tune from the James Bond film of the same name. Between 1969 and 1989, only 4 Bond tunes made it onto the charts. Take a look at these playlists: SATURDAY, 24 AUGUST 2002: Mango Groove; Brothers of Peace; Lucky Dube; Ladysmith Black Mambazo; Phuzekhimisi & Nothembi; Mahotella Queens; Hawk; Lebo Mathosa; Blk Sonshine*; Tananas; Johnny Clegg; Paul Hanmer; Koos Kombuis*; Springbok Nude Girls; Miriam Makeba; Vicky Sampson; Bongo Maffin; Bright Blue; Busi Mhlongo; Amampondo. SUNDAY, 25 AUGUST 2002: Mabi Thobejane, Amampondo; Juno Reactor with Amampondo; Lungiswa; Jeremy Mansfield (what would SA Music Week be without Jeremy's version of the anthem?); Ladysmith Black Mambazo with PJ Powers; Johannes Kerkorrel; Deepak Ram; Aquarian Quartet; Edi Niederlander; Gito Baloi; Songs of the Xhosa Kings; Jabu Khanyile with Bayete; Busi Mhlongo; Wendy Oldfield; Pops Mohamed; Bushmen of the Kalahari; Sanscapes; African Jazz Pioneers and Hugh Masakela. Finished that show with another offering from Pops Mohamed and Mbira Jive - mostly because now I can play it. My husband, Tim, who presents a world music show on another station, KWVA, used to use that track as his theme, so I wasn't allowed to play it! Speaking of whom: On Sunday's Planet Soup with Tim, he played: Lungiswa; Xhosa Kings; Tracks off MELT 2000's 'Free At Last', 'Global Vibes', and Gallo's 'Sound Offerings'; Amatshitshi Amhlophe; Hugh Masakela; African Jazz Pioneers; Miriam Makeba; Kwela Tebza; Phuzekhimisi & Nothembi; Afrida Marimba Band; Busi Mhlongo; Bushmen of the Kalahari; Venda Drummers; Mabi Thobejane; Deepak Ram; Bongo Maffin; Brothers of Peace; Amampondo. TUESDAY AUGUST 27: Women In Music on KRVM continued the trend with some of the more pop-rock offerings from home: Off The Edge*; Tuesday's Child*; Natalia*; Venessa Nolan; Nianell*; Qzoo; Wendy Oldfield; Naked*; Lungiswa; Egyptian Nursery*; Lesley Rae Dowling; Jennifer Ferguson; Famous Curtain Trick; Little Sister*; Liesl Graham; Fetish; Karma; Henry Ate; Mango Groove; Sweatband. PHEW! And I have a show on Saturday 31 August, which will close out our Oregon, USA version of SAMW!! Thanks to all who have sent music through to me, with especial kudos to Benjy at Fresh and Leemor at Sheer, for keeping me supplied with the latest releases. SA music is very popular here - not necessarily because it's from South Africa, but because it's fresh, original and GOOD!!! Note to artists: Don't ever let anyone tell you that you have to live in America, tour constantly, or even have an American agent before you can sell your music here. If that were the case, our local stores (who have huge world music stocks) would have gone out of business a long time ago! Name droppin', shoulder rubbin', hotshot music critics, A&R people, one too many photographers and some skimpy clad woman set the background to a night of good old rock and rock in the Dingwalls pub in Camben, London. Boo! opened the night with their unique mix of African rythms, ska and some deep down and dirty bass ringing from front(wo)man, Chris Cameleon, dressed in a quite perticular small silverish mini. Old songs, new songs and just a bit of collaberation with an ex-THC guitarist, made the audience boo! them more and more. Opting for some more rockier numbers at the end, might show that Boo! could be moving in that sort of direction and that they are capable to get down and loud with the rest (best) of them at any given time. They created 'monkey punk' and this might be more punk than monkey if they wish and what Boo! wishes for surely get! They are on their European tour heading for some Dutch coffee houses and will be back in November. But the night belonged to Dorp. Longevity and such a unique sound ensured that the ex-SA band (Pieter Bezuidenhout, Kevin Kieswetter, Frenchman Fred and Englishman Rob) are on the brink of signing that ellusive international record deal that evaded so many SA bands in the past. From Bezuidenhout's anticts on stage, at a time dancing with the crowd looking at the band playing, the way Kevin Kieswetter showed that he must be one of the finest guitar heros coming from Cape Town with his versability and control, and the use of mixing vinyl with drums, shows that their are more variety in SA music than the guitar based bands we are used to. Rumours about Dorp's first British single release could not be confirmed. Both bands, used to playing infront of festival crowds, entertained the intimate audience - kidnapping them away from the busy, noisy Camden streets - letting them be part of their lives and music! ---------------- UPCOMING GIGS ---------------- STANDARD BANK AWESOME AFRICA 2002 The Standard Bank Awesome Africa Music Festival will be held this year at the Durban Exhibition Centre, next to the ICC, on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September. For them, music and dance are not merely creative expressions, but an integral part of their being. Tragically, after decades of systematic marginalisation and dislocation, the modern world threatens to eradicate these ancient people, their culture as hunter-gatherers, and to silence their strange and beautiful music. 'SanScapes - Visions of the Bushmen' draws its inspiration from this ancient culture, bringing their creativity and musical imagination into the realm of contemporary western dance culture. Using the raw and undiluted recordings revealed on 'Pops Mohamed Presents the Bushmen of the Kalahari', some of the world`s best and most diverse producers and remix artists have embraced the traditional sounds of the San, weaving them into a contemporary digital setting. Artists include Raj Gupta, Simon Emmerson (Afro Celts), Kirk Degiorgio, Smadj, Ekova, Soul Drummers, Gambit, Krishna/Rashid, Pete Lockett, Youth, and Bob Holroyd; all of whom have delved deep into one of the earth's oldest surviving cultures to produce some startling results. The result is a truly unique amalgamation of past, present and futuristic sounds that maintains strict respect for the culture being sampled. This project aims to raise awareness and financial support for the San Bushmen of Southern Africa. A non-profit venture, all proceeds from the album sales and gigs will be donated to WIMSA (Working Groups of Indigenous Minorities of Southern Africa).
