"The new album has got bigger teeth than the first", he reveals, "It's got more rock, more grit. But it's still very Semisane." The four piece have finished recording the ten track follow-up to their six-hit debut album, 'A Life Less Strange', and it is currently being mixed by hot shot engineer and producer Charlie Hamilton at his Control Station studio in Cape Town. The first single, 'Girlfriend of Mine', was written by Tikara, the band's vocalist, and should be on the radio within the next few weeks. Other songs are 'She Cares', and a ballad titled 'Now That I've Found You'. Live favourite 'Rush Me In' has been recorded for the first time and will be included on the new album. The 'Born In A Taxi' duo, Neo and Masuako, also starred in the first Wonder Gig series of live concerts earlier this year. Those recordings are due to surface during October, courtesy of the "Afribeatles". Blk Sonshine made a three-date appearance at the Bassline in Melville last week, and will be on the bill at this weekend's Woodstock 4 festival. This will be followed by some dates in Cape Town and elsewhere in SA through to December. The duo will then be laying down the final tracks for the eagerly awaited but as yet untitled second album, due in early 2003. Sunways then play a few local dates before heading off on a UK tour from October to November. This tour includes some Irish dates in November after the band complete "a hectic" Midlands and Scottish tour. There will be at least one gig in London before the band returns to SA for a National Tour beginning in mid-December. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ 'EYESHADOW' - VALIANT SWART The live appearance of SA's own "Bob Doelyn" on last week's Big Brother II eviction program, cheered up both the unfortunate (and very missed!) Ilse Marie as well as all those Valiant Swart devotees nationwide. In an unusually appropriate move, the BBII organisers had Valiant Swart waiting in the wings to serenade Ilse Marie with a rocking version of 'Eyeshadow', off his 1998 'Roekeloos' EP. We wonder what song Valiant would have sung if it had been Richard who was skopped out of the Human Fishtank instead - his current SAMP3.com chart-topper 'Diep In Die Bos' maybe?? The first time you hear this song's chorus you'll think "Okay, standard contemporary MTV rock riff". Then, when it comes thundering around again, just after the second whiney, Wheatus-type verse, you'll think "Damm! I'll never get this hook out of my head". You'll be right. '(I Think I Can) Relate' is the lead single off the debut EP by ex-Shoofly Chris Tait, and even the acoustic version, now featured as an mp3 at SAMP3.com, will do the trick. These four tracks - 'Relate', 'New Idea', 'Yesterday', and 'Close To You' - were written and produced by Chris Tait at Street Level Studios in Cape Town with guest spots by James Stewart (The Usual), Richard Black (McCully Workshop) and Peter Cohen (The Usual & Bright Blue). The EP landed up at Fresh Records and impressed both Benjy Mudie as well as his son Declan (learning the A&R biz real fast, like Ozzie's son Jack!), resulting in its release on the Fresh label. Listen to an exclusive acoustic version of Tait's 'Relate' at http://www.samp3.com/fresh.html Buy at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=tait ------------ PLAYLISTS ------------ KURT'S SONGS FOR TEXAS HIGHWAYS http://www.samp3.com/karoo.html VETSEUN'S FAVOURITES http://www.samp3.com/favourites.html MICASSO'S FAVOURITES http://www.samp3.com/favourites.html PLEASE SEND US YOUR PLAYLISTS Select 15 or so songs that are available on SAMP3.com, and send your list into us by using the form at http://www.samp3.com/contact.html or mailto:brian@cd.co.za?subject=playlist. That wasn't a reference to her musical abilities (then), it was more for her IT and marketing successes, but Cathy took the award literally and set out to make a big impression with her debut album. Fortunately 'Ordinary Day' is not a flashy dance-pop album of the "moving and shaking" variety. These ten songs pack a range of introspective lyrics and irresistible pop symphonies into less then 40 minutes. All the songs on 'Ordinary Day' were written by Cathy Stadler, with the exception of first single 'Nightingale', and were given the Brian O'Shea magic production touch at the Farm Studios in Midrand during 2001. 'Nightingale', which slots neatly among the other original pop gems on display here, was released earlier this year and immediately grabbed keen attention and radio play. It was followed on to the airwaves by the equally addictive 'I Can't Get Enough Of You', a highlight of the album with Stadler's voice lifting the song from the vulnerability of the verse to the brave, soaring chorus. The band's current line-up - Tim Frost (drums), Jenny Chadwick (bass), and Cathy's brother Jonathan on lead guitar and backing vocals - evolved during the recording of 'Ordinary Day'. They all contributed to these arrangements alongside other guest luminaries like Nathan Waywell (Starskii) on bass, Paul McIver (Watershed) on keyboards and guitar, and Garth McLeod (Sugardrive) on drums. The album opens in a sombre mood with 'What's The Reason' and 'Make Me Your Religion', before the zesty 'Ordinary Day' skips into sight, with a happy-sunny-in-the-city feel and sound similar to acts like UK group Saint Etienne, early Edie Brickell, and SA's The Sunshines. There's also 'Wait A Little Baby', 'Closer (Than I Hold My Breath)', and 'Fallen Angel', a poignant vocal and piano ballad. Then, in a manner befitting the band's name, the album closes with the sweet taste and sage advice of 'Take Your Time'. All round, 'Ordinary Day' is a short, intelligent, and delicious pop album that promises much for these Fortune Cookies' future. Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=fortune cookies ------------------ SAM - '...BRING VIR ELVIS TERUG' (Rhythm Records) In 1997, Stellenbosch blues-rockers Billygoat recorded an album of great original songs in the style of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jack Hammer, et al. The album 'Drawl' was produced by Shot Owens (better known as Valiant Swart) and released by Trippy Grape. All the songs were in English and had titles like 'Wild Boy Boogie', 'Free Range Man', 'Cellphone Blues' and 'Till The Dust Settled Down'. But hidden right at the end of this CD and unlisted on the cover was an imploring Afrikaans song called 'Bring Vir Elvis Terug' written by Billygoat bassplayer Schalk van der Merwe. Now 5 years later Schalk (who sojourned with Delta Blue after Billygoat) has expanded this song into a full-blown Afrikaans Rock Cabaret. He teamed up with his old Billygoat pard'ner Parri (Meyer) and formed SAM to perform and record '...Bring Vir Elvis Terug'. The band name SAM means Surface-to-Air Music says their press release and features Parri on vocals, Vuyishwa Mtshali and Tutu Mwandla on backing vocals, Schalk on bass, Henry Steele on guitar, Tim Rankin on drums and Simon Orange (guest on Billygoat's 'Drawl', Blues Broers, Frosted Orange & Valiant Swart Band) on keyboards. The story is staged in an old outlying dorpie. Abel was born to rock in Afrikaans. His father lost fame in a Pop Idol competition years ago to winner Durt Farren. He undermines Abel's interest in writing music and actually bans all music in the household. The only way in which Abel can live his passion is through dreams and visions of his music. The big day arives: Durt Farren comes to perform in their little town. Abel is also invited to show off his talent. The venue is packed; a silhouette appears on stage. The backdoor of the hall bursts open... "Bring Vir Elvis Terug" will be staged at Aardklop National Arts Festival in September and will be seen in other venues throughout the country shortly! RCA must have heard Schalk van der Merwe's plea to bring Elvis back, because here he is... The release on September 23rd of Elvis 30 #1 Hits comes a full 25 years after the death of Elvis Presley - and, once again, brings to the forefront of the global music scene an individual whose hit-making ability still lives on! Elvis' number one hits began in January 1956, when he scored his first number one with 'Heartbreak Hotel'. This was followed by 'Don't Be Cruel' a short few months after that (July 1956), and then a slew of chart-toppers, including hits like 'Love Me Tender', 'Jailhouse Rock', 'In The Ghetto', 'Suspicious Minds' to 'Way Down' which was released in July 1977 just a little while before Elvis' death on August 16. RCA Records Label are proud to present, for the first time, 30 US and UK number one hits in one collection. A bonus track on the new album is Elvis vs JXL's 'A Little Less Conversation', which has topped all kinds of charts and turned on a hip, young audience to the music of a man who began earning number one slots for nearly 50 years! --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4.CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ---------------- DEEP PURPLE Parts 6, 7 & 8 of 10 The group's eponymous third album carried their finest exposure with Ritchie Blackmore reaching into the giddy heavens on 'Why Didn't Rosemary?', a skit on 'Rosemary's Baby'. Jon Lord's harpsichord solo on 'Blind' stirs uncontrollable emotion as he drives his keyboard to the cross rhythm of Ian's drumming. An outstanding rendition of Donovan's 'Lalena', and Ritchie's wah-wah guitar on 'April', spearhead these recordings by a group that had finally crossed their Rubicon and were ready for greater things. The 'Deep Purple' album was released in June 1969, and the next month the group released a single called 'Hallelujah' which did not feature all the current members! For this session they recruited vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover who had both been former members of Episode Six. Episode Six had found mediocre penetration with the Bonnie Dobson composition 'Morning Dew', and were desperately looking for new frontiers. Rod Evans left to join the progressive entity Captain Beyond, while Simper formed the heavy Warhorse, charting with the Leiber & Stoller-penned 'I (Who Have Nothing)' which had been a huge hit for Shirley Bassey in 1963. In December 1969 the group launched their overindulgent 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra', with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Arnold (he was later knighted, but probably not for this performance) which had been recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall on the 24th September. The third movement contains one of Paice's finest drum solos, which went unnoticed due to the heavy string arrangement. The album was largely due to Jon Lord's love for classical music and understandably confused the rock image that their loyal fans were used to. Prior to this Jon Lord had already started recording his classically-influenced 'Gemini Suite' album which focussed on the instruments of a rock band. The suite also made extensive use of Ritchie Blackmore and his power busting Gibson on a piece titled simply 'Guitar'. The movement had been performed (and recorded for later release) previously in live concert but when it was finally applied to wax it was decided, due to legalities, to use the talents of Ritchie's mentor, Albert Lee. Leaving the crowd chaos behind, I found reflection and uplift in the guitar and singing of Off the Edge. Ballads, rock, instrumentals, all masterfully performed. This is a CD of some variety I realized again when driving through the evening. Some songs uplift, some rock along and make one feel masterful at the wheel, while others, notably the instrumentals, allow one to retreat into deep and personal thoughts of long ago, of what could have been, and of what might ultimately be. Then there is 'Remember September'. I played this song several times on September 11, 2002, and felt an emotional response every time. Of course, the day had many such emotional moments, and only three (Four Jacks and a Jill's 'America', 'America the Beautiful', and 'Remember September') were musical. In case you don't know, 'America' by 4 Jacks & A Jill is to the tune of 'Africa' (or 'Africa, Please Listen') from their last album, '2000 & Beyond'. I know I talked about this CD a couple of weeks ago, but it still holds my attention. Full of variety, 'Unfinished Business' by Off the Edge has plenty of satisfying rock guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums. Real music for real people. This CD keep edging into my player. It sounds so good, and I see no reason to be worried. Even if we did lose the football game, I've got a winner of a CD. 'Boy van Die Suburbs' featured what is widely regarded as the first ever Afrikaans rock song in 'Blommetjie Gedenk Aan My'. Bles-ed with a unique Stem(met), Goosen built Bridges between the light easy listening that Afrikaans music was and mainstream rock by adding some raunchy kitaar while maintaining the Afrikaans lyrics. However, his first offering was not all rock, there was enough Korstentina in the songs to keep the traditional sector happy and it is generally quite an easy listening album following the usual verse - Cora's - verse format. Despite this, throughout the album you can hear the foundations of the "old" Afrikaans music Carike-ing. The sound was much harder than his contemporaries, especially on tracks such as 'Seerower' and the title track, not to mention 'Bloemmetjie'. (These tracks being the Briel thing) For those who Gé-ve a real dislike for the old sound, you would have to use the programme function on your CD player with this as there are some tracks you would want to avoid. 'Die Kaap is Weer Hollands' being a prime example with it's waltz time while the opening track 'Kruidjie-roer-Mynie' falls just short of being Grové. Still it's a Valiant effort for an album that featured some ground breaking material but not quite poles apart from the "old" sound. Rock fans would probably be more impressed with his later material, but it is of interest to those wishing to trace the rise of Afrikaans rock (go on, you've got nothing to Lewis). At the time of it's release Niemand could have predicted the effect this would have on the SA music scene. Goosen took a chance that could have been Koos-tly had the Afrikaner youth not been ready for this kind of music, but fortunately it turned out (Kerk)orrel-right. Cyan were a group from the Netherlands and their song 'Mama Papa (Nana Nana)' climbed into the top 5. This week in 1977 saw very little change with Kenny Rogers remaining at the top. 'Lucille' would end up being the 4th biggest hits of the year, while Peter McCann's 'Do You Wanna Make Love' would be the the 5th biggest. 1982 saw the introduction of German one hit wonders Trio to the international scene. With it's minimal instrumentation and monotone repetitive lyrics, 'Da Da Da' lodged itself in many a 1980's South African brain, including some prominent brains like that of Koos Kombuis who, with a few lyric changes turned it into his 'Autobank Vastrap'. More recently Justine Frischmann's Elastica covered the song, giving the lyric 'I don't love you, you don't love me' a poignant meaning following her much publicised relationship and the subsequent demise thereof with Blur's Damon Albarn. The Pet Shop Boys scored their first number 1 with 'It's a Sin'. It had taken the song 4 weeks since entering the top 20 to top it. Further down the charts in 1987, Fleetwood Mac occupied positions 18 and 19 with 'Big Love' and 'Seven Wonders' respectively. 73 other acts managed 2 songs in the top 20 at the same time while only 4 had had 3 in the charts in the same week. Golliwog are a deliberate and eclectic combination: Bassist Rob Nel, Vocalist Farrell Adams, Scratchmaster The Blunted Stuntman, the ridiculously saucy sounds of the horn section compliments of young 'uns, Lee Thompson and Daniel Shout on trumpet and baritone sax respectively, and stalwart Nick le Roux on tenor sax. Beneath all of this we find the groove-laden drumming of Mike Horn and the outlandish riffs of Gorm Helfjord's Norwegian-tinged guitar flavour. Saturday 28 - 340ml and Tumi & Volume 340ml are all the way from Jo'burg - Mozambique's finest ska/dub/ funk band. Tumi Molekane is one of South Africa's brightest up and coming wordsmiths. He is an honest poet, an intuitive writer and responsible MC. This 22-year old spitkicker has appeared often on the Jo'burg hip-hop scene, most notably the Dead Prez show in the spring of 2000, and the Black August tour to South Africa the following year. The concept band, Volume, is a creative joint venture between Tumi, Tiago, Paulo, Dave and Kyla. Tiago and Paulo form the other half of dubrockjazzhiphopelectricfunk group 340ml, one of the freshest sounds in SA at the moment. The collective result is a sound that lingers over lines of new-school hip-hop, beat poetry and funked-up jazz, which is sure to set a new standard to be followed in national line-ups.
