Purveyors of fine pop songs... it is interesting to note that the 'Choppers' had more radio hits back in the 80's than most bands have in their entire careers. Compiled by lead singer/ guitarist/ writer Bernard Binns the album includes all the classics; 'Mysteries And Jealousies', 'Love Attack', 'Don't Wanna Live In Hollywood', 'Whisper Your Secret' and 'Miles Apart' plus some unreleased material. Remastered by Adrian Levi, 'The Helicopters' comes complete with some witty liner notes from CDW's Andrew Rees (a regular Retro writer these days) and Bernard plus some very interesting photos of the band in full flight. This will be followed in late October by 'Lank Sweat', the first retrospective of Cape Town rockers The Sweatband. Fronted by the sultry Wendy Oldfield and perhaps one of the greatest rock guitarists of them all, John Mair, the band were not only known for their huge hit 'This Boy' (recently covered in true punk style by the fabulously decadent The Phoebes) but also for their incredibly intense and fiery live performances (anyone who saw them at Jaggers will remember). 'Lank Sweat' includes all the songs from their debut album plus seven songs from their unreleased second album including 'Down in Africa', 'Just An Emotion' and 'Young Pain'... the first time these recordings have ever been heard outside the band. Also included are the proverbial in depth liner notes from the band, loads of wonderful photos and a focused remastering job by John Mair and Tully McCully. Scheduled for release in November is the long awaited No Friends of Harry album: put together by the band's Rob McLennan this promises to be the ultimate and essential NFOH album featuring all the band's fave songs plus some unreleased material and of course some surprises. With liner notes by the band's guitarist Ian Wiggins and additional personal reflections by The Night Zoo's Barney Simon plus the regular deluge of great pics, the album, tentatively titled 'The Future Has Passed', is a must for all the fans of this influential group. IN THE WORKS The great news is that, thanks to the untiring efforts of Gallo Music's Antos Stella and Deon Maas we have been finally granted the licensing rights to the following artists: Petit Cheval; Celtic Rumours; Asylum Kids; Baxtop; The Spectres; Flash Harry and Neill Solomon and you can expect releases from these acts in the coming months... We have also finished the mastering of the seminal Tribe After Tribe album 'Power' and along with the band's Robbi Robb, who is supplying us with bonus tracks and some pics, we hope to release this before year end... Nearing completion is the fantastic Cherry Faced Lurchers album 'Live at Jamesons', digitally remastered by Lloyd Ross with bonus tracks, a wealth of rare pics and liner notes by long time friend and fan Shaun de Waal... We have had a lot of mail regarding the follow-up releases from late 60's icons Freedom's Children, Abstract Truth, Hawk and Otis Waygood and we apologise for the delay in getting these out. One of the main reasons for this delay has been the lack of photographic material and the ongoing search to find bonus tracks for the reissues. Retro has always prided itself on the fact that each release is of the highest possible audio quality and that the presentation of the overall package meets our strict guidelines. In essence the label, and the artists concerned, are keen to ensure that their work is presented properly and no stone will be left unturned to make this happen... so please be patient with us and thank you for your ongoing support. Still to come are releases from Urban Creep, National Wake, The Genuines, Cinema, Via Afrika, Julian Laxton, Lesley Rae Dowling and a host of compilations including 'Rarities' (near completion); 'Jiving To The Weekend Beat' (African flavoured pop/rock); 'What Alternative' (punk/Goth bands); 'Talking Through Pictures' (singer/songwriters) and a follow-up to the 'Rocking Against The System' album, this time featuring 90's bands like B World, Squeal, Blue Chameleon, etc. DESPERATELY SEEKING We are on the hunt for pics of the following bands: Tribe after Tribe, Petit Cheval, Flash Harry, Abstract Truth, Baxtop and especially Freedom's Children... Does anyone know the whereabouts of the remaining members of Celtic Rumours? Also interested to know if anyone has a contact number for the 80's band October... SA label, Sheer Sound, received three nominations for two of their biggest-selling artists, Zimbabwean singer Oliver Mtukudzi and the new Malawain sensation, Wambali. Mtukudzi is nominated in the 'Best Artist From Southern Africa' and Best African Arrangement' categories for his album 'Vhunze Moto'. This album features all new material and was released in March 2002. It was produced (once again) by Steve Dyer, and co-produced by Oliver Mtukudzi. 'Vunze Moto' features Steve Dyer on soprano sax, Paul Hanmer on keys and Japan Sidoyi on Hammond organ, as well as Mtukudzi's band The Black Spirits. Malawian singer Wambali is up against Oliver Mtukudzi in the 'Best Artist From Southern Africa' category. His latest album, 'Zani Muwone', was recorded in Johannesburg, South Africa, over a two-year period, and includes guest performances from George Phiri and Tony Cox on guitars, Victor Masondo on bass, and Barry Snyman on sax. ---------------- WASTED YOUTH - THE DIGEST WELCOMES DANIEL NEVILLE Daniel Neville is a youngish Capetonian who has been keeping a close eye on the emerging punk scene in Cape Town and further North. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- EVE... IN THE GARDEN OF SONG (Afrimusik) An intimate album of songs by 5 Stellenbosch women: Lesley Rae Dowling, Eugenie, Nicole Holm, Luna (Pieterse) and Laurinda Hofmeyer. This is not a compilation album in the traditional sense as all these songs were recorded especially for this unique release. Each remarkable singer/ songwriter recorded 3 English or Afrikaans songs at Sunset Recording Studios for this album accompanied by their own gentle piano-playing in most cases or sometimes by Willem Fourie's guitar. Barry van Zyl played drums and Schalk Joubert provided some subtle bass lines. Lesley Rae was coaxed out of semi-retirement by Margueritte Reed to re-record some of her older songs and the full version of 'Unravished Brides' appears here for the first time. This is a beautiful album that celebrates the sounds of women in the garden of song. Back in December 1973, the first Springbok Hit Parade series of albums was awarded a Gold Disc for LP sales of 1 million units for volumes 1-13. By the time Volume 21 was released, over 2 million more of these LPs had found cosy SA homes. So what was the secret of the success of these totally uncool albums? Was it the catchy covers of contemporary international hits, the unbeatable party dance collections that they undoubtably were in certain homes, the suggestive ladies on the covers (it was SA in the '70's remember, even Rodriguez's 'I Wonder' was considered very risque!), or was it a combo of all three? That's a poser. Still, those sexy cover models sprang to mind years later, when a young Stellenbosch band were searching for a name and came up with the inspired "Springbok Nude Girls", so let's give credit where it is due, and laud the debut CD release of a new generation of Springbok Hits Volumes 1-6. The songs on this new series are new reworked versions of hits from the '70's, '80's, and '90's, and not remastered versions of the original albums as hoped (sacrilege I say!!). The classic original album covers have been given a swish makeover as well, with only the choicest Teazers' models being given the opportunity and honour to appear on this next series of classic SA cover albums. Read http://www.new.co.za/~currin/sa_springbok.html ------------ THREEFIFTY - 'TRAPPED INSIDE' This is the first officially released CD by Threefifty and also the first CD to be released on Stolen Records, the new Indie label. My first reaction... wow!! From a band whose members' average age is 17, it's damn good. This punk/ska foursome of guitar, bass, drums and trumpet, with Brett and Nick contributing vocals, have given us six original tracks - five of the tracks were recorded at Paris Studios in Fishhoek and the first track, 'Million Dollar Give-away', was recorded live at one of their local shows. The quality of the recording is excellent apart from the live track, which is poorly mixed and comes across a bit muddy, but it is definitely a good idea to try and get hold of a copy to add to your collection. The band got a bank loan to pay for the CD -- help them pay it back by getting a copy of 'Trapped Inside' from Stolen Records at: http://www.stolenrecords.za.net. Their 1970 album 'In Rock' was essentially a high-speed masterpiece, giving rise to the epic 'Child In Time', similarly copped from 'Bombay Calling' by the Californian group It's a Beautiful Day. In September 1971 the album 'Fireball' spiralled into the charts at #1, solidifying the Purple as the foremost rock band in the UK. In April '72 they utilised Jon Lord's blues combo name and released 'Machine Head', sporting the epic 'Smoke On The Water' riff, the song describing how Zappa and the Mothers had lost their equipment in a fire at Switzerland's Montreux Casino. Nothing could stand in their way as they challenged the galaxy with the grinding 'Highway Star', which pre-empted the outstanding 'Made In Japan' (live) album. Japan stimulated their 1973 single 'Woman from Tokyo' while a surprise B-side, 'When a Blind Man Cries', got more airplay than the A-side 'Lazy'. By May 1973, new member David Coverdale replaced Ian Gillan who went on to form his own band. Glover departed to become a producer and was replaced by ex-Trapeze bassist Glenn Hughes. By the mid-Seventies the fire had not been dowsed by the new replacements, and the group forged forward with the album 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer'. 'Burn' sizzled with the bluesy 'Mistreated', while worthy value could be found in the understated solo on 'Soldier Of Fortune' and mind grappling 'Gypsy'. The final blow arrived in January 1975 when Ritchie Blackmore departed to form Rainbow. His replacement, ex-James Gang / Zephyr Tommy Bolin, failed to capture the Blackmore glory and speed that Deep Purple were famed for. The 'Come Taste The Band' album sold dismally and the subsequent tour was erratic and fraught with problems. Deep Purple disbanded in April 1976. Eight years later the original members reformed, but that's another story... The Deep Purple Web Index http://www.cd.co.za/deeppurple From next week onwards Shiloh will focus his spotlight on South African rock music history, starting with South African Rock and Roll in the 60s. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm ------------------ USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music RODRIGUEZ - 'COLD FACT' (PT Music, 2002 re-issue) Lately, I've been listening to Rodriguez's 'Cold Fact' on tape, so when I played this CD re-release I had forgotten its depth and clarity of sound. The sharpness of the guitars, the crisp boom of the bass, and the nuances of his voice enthralled me. I had listened to the tape so often that I had forgotten the real sound of the songs. 'Cold Fact' opens strong, with, 'Sugar Man', then booms into the fuzzy bass 'Only Good for Conversation', reminding me that there is always another aspect of the man's music that I forget until I play it. Every time I play a Rodriguez CD, I have the revelation that he is not just a folkie, but rocks as well. I experience that revelation every time I play one of his albums, and his music is always fresh. I think of Rodriguez as a folkie because of his social commentary, his inter-personal songs, and his wry wit. A rocker with a modern folk conscience, a troubadour who rocks, a man with something to say who rocks along the way. I think of him in all these ways. Listening to these songs again on this re-release made them feel like I was hearing them for the first time. Their reborn clarity pleased and awed, compared to the tape in my bakkie. Rodriguez claims he is an average player, an ordinary songwriter. But I think he's being modest. But if what he says is so, there is much to be said for simplicity. He succeeds with his talent to tell a tale plainly, to sing a song honestly. And the world, a discerning part of the world anyway, listens. Rocking, or intimate, his songs feel like seeing old friends dressed up in new clothes. It feels good to be with these old friends again. Read http://www.sugarman.org Listen http://www.sugarman.org/rodsounds.html Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=CDADTA7000 Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music 'THE ROMANTIC LURE OF POSSUM WORSHIP' - TWEAK The Possum, or more correctly the Opossum, is of the family Didelphidae and is North America's only marsupial mammal. According to the highly informative http://www.opossum.org these furry animals are 'Solitary and nocturnal: usually slow moving; when frightened and unable to flee may fall into an involuntary shock-like state' and 'Hiss or growl and show their 50 sharp teeth when frightened; but, in reality, they are gentle and placid - they prefer to avoid all confrontations and wish to be left alone.' So with this in mind just what the hell are Tweak on about when calling their album 'The Romantic Lure of Possum Worship'? Being attracted to the worship of an animal described as 'gentle and placid' is at odds with the TNT enhanced punk thrash rock that they play. From the opening bang and crash of 'Birthday Card' through to the alternate version of 'Friends?' as a hidden track, this album is jam packed with the energies of youth. You can almost hear the hormones bouncing around the studio, and none more so than in the paean to that young starlet 'Britney Spears'. While most of the album is the punky nu-metal, there is the decidedly Eminem sounding rapped 'Oo La La' and some ragga reggae bits and jazzy guitar riffs on 'Down By Da River' to add variety. However, what struck me throughout this album is its quality. I can honestly see no reason why this album can't stand up and be counted amongst its American contemporaries. It has all the ingredients necessary to propel it up the US charts, and the sound would not be out of place being on rotation on MTV. The fact that the album received a few votes in the SA Rock Digest's Essential SA Album survey is testimony to the impact it has already had. 'Playing Possum' is defined as 'pretending to be unconscious', the phrase coming from the possum's habit of falling into an involuntary shock-like state when frightened. I personally can't see people pretending to be unconscious very easily when playing this Possum, as the infectious tunes will soon have you bobbing your head along to it, however, it may just be that on first listen some are so dumbstruck that that they go into a shock-like state. Both 'Sylvia's Mother' and 'Baby Makes... made number 1 in SA, and interestingly, they both spent 24 weeks on the top 20. Their only other hit to chart was 'Sexy Eyes' in 1980 which was a comparative flop, spending a single week at number 20. Kenny Rogers was replaced at number 1 by Peter McCann in 1977. 'Do You Wanna Make Love' had made number 5 in the US, but failed to chart in the UK. Shabby Tiger meanwhile scored their second top 5 hit of the year, having charted in May of 1977 with 'Slow Down'. They ended up being tied 11th with Abba as most successful chart acts of the year. Suzanne Vega had come to prominence when her song 'Left of Centre' had been included in the soundtrack to the movie 'Pretty in Pink'. 'Luka' was a song about child abuse and came from her second album 'Solitude Standing'. Like the single, the album was also peaking at number 3 on the SA Album charts this week. Neil Coll - Dublin, Ireland mailto:collneil@hotmail.com ---------------- SOME HIT-STORY PLEASE? I'm a regular listener to SAFM and the Bruce Millar Show, and always enjoy the Wednesday morning line-up of Richard Haslop's "Hit Story", Stephen Segerman's Digest update, Monica Fairall's health slot, and Professor Robert Brook's weekly eclectic discourse. A friend of mine mentioned in passing that Richard Haslop, apart from his other lengthy musical credentials, was once in a musical group with Monica Fairall. Is this correct? Thanks! Martin {According to Chilvers and Jasiukowicz's 'History of Contemporary Music of South Africa', Monica Fairall (guitar, autoharp) and Richard Haslop (mandolin, dobro) were originally in a folk-bluegrass duo called Round The House, which they formed in 1976. The group performed traditional Irish, English, and American folk songs. They were then joined by Rob van der Linde (guitar, vocals), Kevin Yates (banjo), and Len Erikksen (fiddle). Yates and Erikksen were later replaced in 1980 by Thijs Ruhup (banjo) and Floyd Stamm (pedal steel guitar, bass). - ed} ------------- SMOKE SIGNALS http://www.cd.co.za/smokesignals A fully integrated publicity and events service, specialising in the music and theatre world. By 9:30 when Sedwick the Salesman got up on stage and struck the first chord, the 150 people crowding the skank pit surged around in a mad frenzy. Not one of the best sets we've seen Sedwick play but the crowd didn't care. During the 'Gary Song', Sedwick was joined up on stage by 20 enthused fans who pushed Greig out of the way and sung the chorus for him. Next up was Skanking Nelson, who delivered a ripping set to a now very amped crowd. They made everybody laugh when the band members swapped instruments and announced that they were becoming a hip-hop band, and proceeded to play a hip-hop song. They soon gave that up, went back to their own instruments, and played 'Fade Away' for a second time before handing the stage over to New World Inside. As soon as New World Inside started to play the crowd again went mad, with stage diving being top of the menu. The band got everyone in the "Turtle" bouncing to their manic cover of 'Barbara Anne'. After NWI came the punk/ska freaks from Threefifty and, as usual, Brett entertained everybody with his stupid jokes until everybody told him to shut up and play. They did two new songs as well as favourites like 'Million Dollar Give-away' and 'Destroying Christmas'. See the 'Cape Punk Gig Guide' below for details of the next Punk Friday Nite at the "Turtle".
