Armchair Theatre on Sunday 30th March to avoid possible self harm! ----------------------- OPPIKOPPI EASTER FESTIVAL - DEMOCRACY AT WORK A word or twenty from the organisers... The final vote tally of votes on the OppiKoppi website (and decision on the future resting-place for the main OppiKoppi festival) has shown many interesting trends. The first being an unshakeable and very strong collection of tune-philanderers quite intent on going back to the bush - it seems as if the sun, the veld, the dust, the thorns and the primitive showers have left a permanently favourable impression. The second interesting aspect was that the younger, and international, visitors enjoyed the Fountains' edition more. After much deliberation and twiddling of thumbs it was therefore decided to refrain from making a decision on the location - by hosting both. The call has been clear from the ground that there is a more-than-puny demand for the camping-cum-braaing-bushveld festival, but the strong social crossover drive and progressive nature of the Fountains edition has also proven to have very adamant hangers-on. So there you have it. In typical South African war-negating fashion the battle has been avoided by making both teams win. So the bushveld festival will be hosted on its original date from 8-10th August, whilst it looks as if the Fountains' edition will be moved slightly later to the end of November. The Oppikoppi "If Not Tomorrow Then The Next Day" Easter Festival will be held at the original venue on the farm at Northam in the Bushveld from 18-21st April 2003. Just like that! The line-up is still in the planning stages, but so far we have managed to coerce Valiant Swart, Tweak, Slugs of War, Tidal Waves, Duck and Cover, Albert Frost, Liela Groenewald, Zef Sketse, Brixton Moord en Roof Orkes, Pestroy, Norman Chauke, Soil 7T7, The Narrow, Dan Petlansky, and Tumi and the Volume to perform on the legendary wooden stage at the top of THE koppie. A total of about 20 acts will perform over the three-day period and the additional names will be added shortly. Go to www.oppikoppi.co.za for constant updates and important news for discerning party entrepreneurs. Tickets are ridiculously cheap at R150 for the entire weekend, including camping, braaing, fishing, swimming (or attempting to), and free generous dollops of time to just hang around or - over (while stocks last). NB: As the name of the festival comes from the old Tim Parr tune 'Freedom', the organisers have decided (possibly in their not-so-infinitely-wise enthusiasm) to allow any person with the surname Parr to enter for free. So if your surname is Parr and you have an ID to prove it at the gate you can join us for free (Whether you have applied for your driver's license card or not). You can thank bra Tim for that later. If your friends call you Parrie, Parra, Paddy or anything like that you need not apply. Bring the braai's, forget the tent and don't tell your mother. Thanks to OppiKoppi Productions and Vodacom, this area will be able to start its own music festival. The co-operation of RSG and Geraas ensures that the festival will receive good publicity from the start. Most festivals will develop an identity in the first year, hence the decision by the various role-players to start with an organised event, rather than booking a truckload of artists and activities and then struggle with logistical nightmares. The plan is to establish the Magoebaskloof Herfsfees as a yearly event - in one of the most spectacular parts of our country. The festival will last for two days (25 and 26 April 2003) and the initial line-up is as follows: Friday 25 April: Valiant Swart and Laurinda Hofmeyr Saturday 26 April: Anton Goosen and Helenè Bester. Negotiations are under way with artists to include Thursday and Sunday in the festival. Entrance for each evening is R90 and tickets can be booked at the Magoebaskloof Tourism Board on (015) 276-5047. The festival will be at the Magoebaskloof Barnyard theatre - you can bring your picnic baskets to the show, and other refreshments will also be available for those without picnic baskets. With a three-year track record of successful, well-attended events, their Battle of The Bands project is now expanding from the live to the recorded arena, offering winning bands the opportunity to gain studio experience and media exposure. Originally conceptualised to motivate and excite the music students by offering them the opportunity to organise into 'bands' and participate in a Battle Of The Bands competition, the project will now take one step further. A sponsorship deal has been arranged with Openroom Productions and the winning band will now be offered the opportunity of two days in a professional studio with the services of an experienced engineer and producer. The upcoming event features eight school bands, including an all-girl punk band. The events are judged by SA music personalities, musicians and music experts. Judging is discussed at the event, and judges' scores and comments are freely available to entrants. The winning band will record its song at Zone 4D Studios, engineered and produced by Darryl Torr, after a further period of pre-production to take place within the Music Department. Songs will be distributed to radio for playlisting as well as to media for review. Two further Battle Of The Bands competitions will be held later in the year, each with a similar prize. Further plans for the Battle of the Bands include a Final Event to be held in a Johannesburg Live Music venue, and expansion to include bands from other schools nationwide (details to be announced). Contact Openroom Productions on: (Tel) 011 453 4518 or 083 360 8228 (studio manager Tanya Stander) or mail to mailto:info@openroom.co.za. Physical Address: 45, 1st Avenue Edenvale 1609, Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.SAmp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ----------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ New mp3s at SAmp3.com: 'Charlie' - Lorraine Shannon featuring Trevor Rabin A stunning reworking of the Rabbitt classic, which was also covered (in a totally different way) by Wonderboom last year. Co-composer, with Patric van Blerk, and original Rabbitt guitarist Trevor Rabin adds a magical guitar solo to pianist Lorraine Shannon's tasteful instrumental rendition. 'Die Mystic Boer' - Valiant Swart This much-requested Valiant Swart signature tune has been authorized for SAmp3.com by Rhythm Records who have recently re-released the whole Valiant Swart back-catalogue. A Karoo cowboy song. 'A Boogie For Bokkie' - Isak Roux An instrumental piano boogie from Isak Roux off his aply titled 'Piano Afrika' CD released in 2001. Tap your feet along to this one. 'Dreams In Fire' - The Awakening This track originally appeared on the 1999 CD 'Ethereal Menace' and is currently available on 'Sacrificial Etchings', a best of The Awakening. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "this is like Bowie, but better". 'Dreams Of Fire' rocks along loudly and would sound great on an action movie soundtrack. 'One More Day' - PetFlyz PetFlyz recently released their 'Motive For Breathing' CD through Intervention Arts and this punky-rocky track is definitely one of the motives for buying this CD. 'Overload' - Alexis The title track from the 3rd CD by PE schoolgirl Alexis. This is a difficult song not to like, and you've probably heard it on the radio too. 'Too Dumb To Quit' - Too Old To Rock Rock guitar instrumental from Too Old To Rock who are based in Florida (USA, not West Rand). A drum beat that John Bonham would have been proud of opens up the song followed by the incendiary guitars of Jim Reindel and Chris Hattingh. Powerful, driving, awe-inspiring. 'Wanted' - Roboto Da Funk A funky old school electronica tune from Rupert Mellor and Tully McCully, together known as Roboto Da Funk. ''n Hemel Vol Blou Akkers' - Anton Goosen An Ingrid Jonker poem set to music by Anton Goosen off his 1996 CD 'Bushrock'. "Ingrid was the Patti Smith of Afrikaans literature" says Goosen. Hammond organ by Angus Rose and banjo on fade by Alistair Coakley. 'Ingoma' - Khumbula There is a new African sound and its name is Khumbula (a Zulu name meaning "Remember"). Khumbula formed on the East Rand in 2002 and their music combines elements of Maskanda, Kwaito, Reggae, Jazz, Rock and complex vocal interplay all mixed up with the spoon of pop sensibility. 'Ingoma' is a catchy chant about supporting and loving your country. Guitars on this song are by Mauritz Lotz who seems to get onto every week's new mp3 releases somehow or other! Take a look here for proof http://www.SAmp3.com/artists_l_s.html#lotz All these mp3s are available for free download at http://www.SAmp3.com by kind permission of the artists and/or their labels. Buy South African CDs at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ----- CDs ----- HEY THERE'S THE MISSING WILDEBEEST! Wildebeest Records, once the home of Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Piet Botha, Jack Hammer, Gert Vlok Nel, Wonderboom and Dorp, to name but a few, is back! Fanie van der Merwe and Eckard Potgieter (formerly the sole owner of Wildebeest Records) acquired their own recording studio (Melkstraat Studios) late last year, and set out on an initiative aimed at the development and expansion of the original Afrikaans market. The idea was to give a number of unknown artists the opportunity to have their material recorded and having it introduced to the many fans of original Afrikaans music. After sifting through loads of demos, they have decided on eight extremely talented, yet largely unknown, artists. Widebeest gave them the freedom to record their own material in their own special way and the result is a wonderful, 18-track compilation titled 'Volk Jou Ook - 18 Liefdesliedjies Vir Vrydenkende Afrikaners'. These are all love songs, but not all in the typical fashion! The album largely has a bluesy feel to it, but there's also plenty of acoustic rock and some mighty ballads to be found. The only really familiar artist on 'Volk Jou Ook' is Alta Joubert, alongside the totally unknown Adam Tas, Seeleeu Leipoldt, Ossebra Wandrag, Blinde Bachus Nel, UZO Blaker, George Harry and Gizelle. 'Volk Jou Ook - 18 Liefdesliedjies Vir Vrydenkende Afrikaners' is being launched on March 14 and will take the shape of a gig with all eight artists performing at the Sin Bin in Pretoria. Jacques du Preez from Geraas will be the MC for the night and the gig will also feature on Geraas. ------------------------- LORRAINE SHANNON - 'LORRAINE SHANNON' Lorraine Shannon is a well-known South African pianist who has just released her self-titled album on the Gallo SA label. The album features 16 lovely interpretations of classic pop songs, produced and arranged by Mauritz Lotz. It seems that Lorraine Shannon had to be coerced a little into recording this album, but Robert Schroder did the convincing, and the executive producing, and it was well worth the effort There is one original composition, 'A Moment Of Love' among the other beautifully performed piano-based instrumental versions of songs like 'Your Song', 'Unchained Melody', and 'Unbreak My Heart'. There is also a very special version of the song 'Charlie', the huge Rabbitt hit written by Patric van Blerk and Trevor Rabin. Shannon's interpretation impressed Rabin enough to result in him providing an accompanying guitar section. Download 'Charlie' at http://www.SAmp3.com Other guest spots include trumpeter Marcus Wyatt on 'Nature Boy', vocalist Juanita Kruger on 'All By Myself', vocalist Jannie Moolman on 'Your Song' and Mauritz Lotz duets on guitar on 'Somethin' Stupid'. Lotz played all the guitars on the album and Lorraine Shannon played piano, keyboards, and adds some haunting vocal effects. The other musicians on the album are Denny Lalouette (bass), Neill Ettridge (drums), and Bruce Wallace (drums). Real singing, too, not a screeching vocal style used because it cuts through amplified rock. Cutting Jade, the next big thing to bust out of SA? This limited edition release has two CDs, their debut packaged with their second album, and together they proved impossible to resist. The first Cutting Jade album here, 'So There We Were', is more musically diverse than their second release 'Between Two Lives', and sounds weaker than the new work, but only because 'Between Two Lives' sounds like a string of hit singles. Hard and light, rock with melody, or hard rock with a pop-rock veneer. Aw hell, it's rock as us purist, basic rock unit guys like it. These are practiced musicians, but some songs stand out, aside from all of 'Between Two Lives'. Incidentally, I get a kick out of their borrowing The Stingrays' 'Better the Devil You Know' riff in the song 'Beautiful'. Their debut album is a pleasant rock work, with a balance between ballads and hard rock songs, but 'Between Two Lives' is hard rock-dominated, with a couple-three slower numbers providing balance. And the lyrics from this new, young band talk about concerns of growing and going through life. If I had to pick only one Cutting Jade, it would be 'Between Two Lives'. But I chose this special edition. Been listening to Cutting Jade all week and haven't worn them out yet. Think I'll listen to them during this coming week, too. So does the 'Eloise Concerto' by Rouge qualify as a concerto? Well is has three movements entitled 'Eloise', 'Love Lost' and 'Eloise Finale'. Also it features a lot of piano solo's so in some ways it does fulfil the concerto requirement. The next question is who was Rouge. Well the band was made up of Zane Cronjé and John Weddepohl, both well known names in the SA music world. They were assisted by Derek Neward, Nippy Cripwell and Malcolm Riddell in converting Barry Ryan's classic hit 'Eloise' into a mega disco orchestral dance-a-thon. Lasting the whole of side A and clocking in at over 17 minutes, this track, which can be found on the CD 'Disco Fever', would put sweat patches on the armpits of most white suits, despite Brut being big at the time. I must admit though that I preferred the Damned's version which has a bit more venom to it. As for the B side of this album, well there's a rather good version of the Turtle's 'Elenore' along with the soul disco tracks 'Don't Stop Singing', 'Set Me Free' and 'Let's Spend the Night Together', all of which I found a bit too smaltzy for my liking, but would appeal to those who enjoyed those slightly slower numbers that brought you closer to your partner on the dance floor. On these tracks Weddephol's vocals are relaxed and mellow. If you regard disco as dated, then you will find this a dated album, but for those who still enjoy a good night of boogying would do well do dig this album out of the garage and crank up the old gramophone. Those who are extra enthusiastic should cover a football with tin foil, tie it from the ceiling, set it spinning and shine a torch on it. {Ed's comment: Rouge is not be confused with UK band Rogue who had a hit with the song 'Dedication' in the mid-70s} Read http://www.new.co.za/~currin/rouge_eloise.html Listen http://www.samp3.com/songs.html ('Disco Fever' sampler) Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=cdredd627 ('Disco Fever') John Samson, London mailto:john@sarockdigest.com _________________________________________ 6.HISTORY & TRIVIA ------------------- SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS http://www.cd.co.za/charts This week [Last week] Title - Artist 30 YEARS AGO (09 March 1973) 1 [1] I Don't Wanna Play House - Barbara Ray 2 [2] Woman (Beautiful Woman) - Don Gibson 3 [4] We Believe In Tomorrow - Freddy Breck 4 [6] You're So Vain - Carly Simon 5 [3] I'd Love You To Want Me - Lobo 25 YEARS AGO (10 March 1978) 1 [1] Subsitute - Clout 2 [2] Mull Of Kintyre - Wings 3 [3] It's A Heartache - Bonnie Tyler 4 [4] You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone 5 [5] Needles And Pins - Smokie 20 YEARS AGO (11 March 1983) 1 [1] I Don't Wanna Dance - Eddy Grant 2 [2] Words - FR David 3 [3] Maneater - Daryl Hall & John Oates 4 [6] Talk Talk - Talk Talk 5 [4] Let's Go Dancing (Ooh La La La) - Kool & The Gang 15 YEARS AGO (27 February 1988) 1 [1] I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany 2 [2] Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlise 3 [3] (I've Had) The Time Of My Life - Jennifer Warnes & Bill Medley 4 [4] Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley 5 [5] Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys 1978 and 1988 saw the top 5 looking a bit like a stuck record with the top 5 remaining unchanged, in fact in 1978 the top 8 did not change, while positions 13 to 18 remained static in 1988, so a bit of a Groundhog day syndrome creeping into the charts in those years. Fortunately we saw a new entry into the top 5 in 1973. Carly Simon who later married James Taylor had begun her musical career as one half of the Simon Sisters, the other half being her sister Lucy. 'You're So Vain' features the backing vocals of one Mick Jagger, about whom, some say, the song was written. The song topped the US charts and peaked at number 3 in the UK. Talk Talk were fronted by Mark Hollis and their debut album 'The Party's Over' peaked at number 4 on the SA Album charts. The first single from the album went under the same name as the band and charged into the top 5 in 1983. Interestingly the single had stalled at number 52 in their native UK. The follow up 'Today' cracked the UK top 20 but failed to chart on the Springbok charts. 'Talk Talk' did top the Radio 5 charts. From my internet searches it appears that this album was never converted to CD. I have solid memories of Robbi Robb at various venues in JHB blowing my mind away with his lyrics and his antics on stage. During my 2 year conscription his music kept me focused on what we were actually fighting for (?). I would appreciate it if u could give me a lead where I could obtain a copy (any media) of this album. He led me onto Punk Rock which formed, and still remains my passion in musical expression. What are the biggest rock bands in SA right now? I've been kind of interested in your country's music for a while because of a certain man by the name of Trevor Rabin, who was a guitarist for my favourite band Yes and also for the band Rabbitt which, of course, comes from SA. It is being used in a Virgin Holidays commercial in the UK. The advert starts with the Qkumba Zoo intro verse, "Who's that calling?" before breaking into the chanting chorus part of the track. The track suits the Hi-Nrg commercial perfectly. Good to hear a South African track on television in the UK (besides Ladysmith Black Mambazo with that Heinz Beans commercial). Good luck to Qkumba Zoo (getting MASSIVE exposure across the USA, UK and Europe with this Virgin commercial!). Maybe it's time for a new remix of the 'Child Inside'. Sounded great with the film, too. My take on the film? Dark, grim, elements of film noir, and some real stylish bits in the direction. Some leather fetishism. Not so overtly a comic book on film like 'Spiderman', but a gritty film with some of the darker elements of 'X-Men'. The picture captures Mark Boucher in a splendid forward defensive stroke, and Lance Klusener happily leaning on his bat at the non-striker's end, as the last ball of the 45th over of South Africa's innings is bowled. It captures perfectly the moment when the South African management had a brain melt and assured the batsmen that 229 was enough for victory, when they needed 230 to advance to the Super Six. The picture is titled "Not a-f**king-gain" and will sell at R1000 + p&p. For an extra R500 you can also buy "Oh f**k it!", the limited edition picture from the 1999 World Cup capturing the sheer confusion of the moment when Allan Donald had a brain melt and forgot how to run. Why not buy the boxed set of "South African Cricket - Why we have never won the f**in' World Cup" which includes the previously unreleased "You've got to be f**king joking!", a picture which captures the looks on the faces of the South African batsmen faces after the big screen flashes up that the revised target they were chasing for victory vs. England in the 1992 World Cup Semi Final was 22 runs off 1 ball. Postcard pretty. First up with the tent and then over to the Tassenberg main stage just in time to catch the Rudimentals' last couple of ska numbers. Unfortunately they had to cut their set a bit short, giving us the opportunity to catch the last of Soulja on the Graca Safari Stage. Punchy vocals from frontman, Warren. Back on the Tassenberg stage a little later, the main act of the evening, Kobus!, roared at the rowdy audience. Saturday: the bleary-eyed breakfast beat with Isolasie Hare, on the Graca stage. Mellow rock, tight performance. At 11:00 Flowerheads played on the Tassenberg main stage. Foot-tapping flavour. Well-constructed songs, like their lyrical ballad "Filter." A novel drum and bass solo song slipped in too. On the Graca stage next was The Jesse Jordan Band. Very traditional rock style but invariably somewhat clichéd. Over to the main stage for Arbor. Upbeat, indie tunes from this fresh four piece from Stellenbosch (no strangers to the Tassenberg stage). Lise Smit, on an acoustic bass, captivated the crowd with her enchanting voice. Her brother Nico, on lead guitar, delivered some fantastic rapping with their song 'Dark, Dark Place." Charming and original. Seven Day Story delivered a good performance on the Graca stage, despite PA glitches. The Voodudes, in the subsequent slot, played their funky muchacha style with manic passion. Great bass from Woody and superb drumming from Hanro. Frontman, Pepe, demonstrated his epic vocal talents with their catchy song, "Bang, Bang You're Dead!" Lively and entertaining. Lead singer and guitarist for Joburg-based band N8ive, Dave Owens, (on an acoustic/electric) transfixed the Graca crowd with his powerful, deep melodic voice. Sons Of Trout gave a great show in the jam-packed Tassies tent. Last on the Graca stage for the evening was New Porn. Arno Carsten's latest project. A stylish complement of SA's best musos: Albert Frost on guitar and backup vocals, Woody Swart on bass and Hanro van Wyk on drums. Professional entertainment! Karen Zoid and Valiant Swart carried on rocking the Wingerdstokkers (about 2000 strong by then) well into the boisterous night. Tassies' next stars were Golliwog. A talent-packed whirlwind. Farrell kept the crowd funked and frenzied, with brilliant bass licks kicking the beat. Zinkplaat were first up on Sunday morning (the rest snored on). At 11:00 P.A.W.N. played to a good crowd (especially for a Sunday). Alternative rock, with awesome female vocals. Followed by the experimental acts. RankinOrangeJoubert. Jazzy, with funky bass and double bass by Schalk Joubert. The Albert Frost Trio. Guest appearance by Tim Parr for an epic duo with Albert. Joined later by bass-meister, Rob Nel, for a mind-blowing jam. Tassenberg rocks the party again!
