So, what is 'CORE'? 'CORE' is urban, South African and real. It's now, it's uncompromising and it's honest. It's about life, choice and freedom. It provokes, challenges and inspires. It's authentic. It's intelligent. It stimulates dialogue, it creates space for expression. It lives now. And, we're informed, by the same press release that told us about all those other above qualities, that it is free! 'CORE' wants YOU to be part of its creation and development. It wants you to reveal your words, poetry, art, designs, clothes, music, creativity, graffiti, drawings, stories, events, ideas, feelings. The deadline for submissions for the first issue was unfortunately last Friday 17 October, but, if you missed it, don't panic. There will be more issues for you to contribute to... You will find Core (James Garner) at (021) 447 8415 -------------- TAIT & JUSTIN BERGH SA TOUR POSTPONED - CAPE DATES ANNOUNCED All those fans looking forward to seeing Tait and Justin Bergh at a local club on their joint SA tour will need to be patient a while longer. The tour has been postponed until early next year. More details will be posted on www.tait.co.za throughout the next three months. So until then you will have to content yourselves with Tait's new album, 'Back Seat Driver', and with Tait's big radio sing-a-long pop hit, 'In My Arms'. 'Back Seat Driver' is finally available in all stores, and the band's next single, 'Classroom Blues', is to be launched on radio in the next few weeks. Tait are based in Cape Town and are looking forward to this summer season. A series of Cape gigs is being lined up to replace the SA tour dates and more dates are currently being booked. Upcoming Tait gigs to watch out for include two dates at The Armchair Theatre in Observatory, Cape Town - the first is a Friday night (21st November) gig with SteveVan, and the second is on Monday 15th December with Cruel April. In the middle of those two gigs is the D'vine Festival in Malmesbury on Saturday 29th November, which is the Launch of the new Street Level Compilation, with live performances by James Stewart, Velve, SteveVan, Happy Four Twenty, Janie Jones and other artists featured on the compilation. Tait http://www.tait.co.za -------------- DEREK GRIPPER IN CONCERT: "8-string solo guitar compositions exploring the music of the Cape" Derek Gripper is one of South Africa's most significant and pioneering young guitarists. Winner of numerous music awards, he has a Master's degree from UCT and has furthered his studies internationally under world-renowned musicians such as V.V. Umashankar, Odair Assad, Carlos Bonnel, and Craig Ogden. Gripper will be launching his 'Blomdoorns' CD at the Baxter on the 28th of October. The album is an eagerly awaited collection of guitar compositions reflecting the Western Cape and is released on Open Records. His new material will be played on a specially sculpted 8-string guitar. Built exclusively for Gripper, this unique instrument is played upright, like a cello, with a metal endpin that balances on a wooden resonator box. The effect is to create an instrument that expands the pitch, volume and tonal range of the guitar. This CD marks the fifth and latest release from Open Records. Previous releases were Enkeleen - 'Ek Is Legio', Alex van Heerden & Derek Gripper - 'Sagtevlei', Brendon Bussy - 'Diesel Geiger', and Benguela - 'Sui' Baxter Concert Hall 28 October 2003 - 20h15 Tickets are R35 and available through Computicket CD's will be on sale for R100. www.openrecord.co.za -------------- KLIPPIES AND BRICKS Flush from their chart-topping success with 'Humanarium' on the SAmp3.com charts, Bed On Bricks will be performing at Die Mystic Boer in Stellenbosch on the 21st of October 2003 as part of the Klippies & Cola Student Sessions. These sessions are organised by Bastard Media along with SL Magazine, MFM, UCT Radio, Die Mystic Boer and The Independent Armchair Theatre. Bands from Cape Town and Stellenbosch get teamed up to perform together at both venues, creating a live music circuit on the Stellenbosch and UCT campuses. Bed On Bricks (representing Stellenbosch) will be playing with The Rudimentals - an eight-piece band from Cape Town. The two bands will also be performing at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Cape Town on the 28th of October 2003. For more information, contact Gilad Hockman from Bastard Media at info@bastardmedia.co.za -------------- And, on the lighter side: ------------------------- THE SA PERFORMERS GUIDE TO THE DANGERS INHERENT IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Herewith, a cautionary glance at some of the dire hazards associated with live performance, courtesy of The Nimbus Experience: (1) BPFB (Bands Playing For Bands) - To practise hard and struggle for a gig at a good spot and then to show up and realise that your band will merely be performing for other bands who will either want to see you die on stage or keep checking their watches in wait for their own turn, can be a somewhat unsettling experience. This condition can cause slight discomfort. (2) PTS (Pearls To Swine) - Again, a hard road of practices and sweat can sometimes lead to a disappointing performance in front of an audience who did not come to see the band. If you find yourself trying to shout the lyrics over the table discussing stock options, you may have a case of PTS. May cause deflation of the chest. (3) BYOA (Bring Your Own Audience) - Now, I have actually heard a venue owner say, 'But where are your audience?' To which I replied, 'But, where are your audience?' but what I wanted to say was, 'I hope little bugs eat you from the inside out.' This condition causes weakness of the knees. (4) PAPOO (PA system POO) - Ever shown up at a gig to find that the PA system may well be the HI FI you threw out when you were sixteen? The one you got rid of when you decided to get a "Real" sound system? The PAPOO has got you! Take ten steps back and fall on your botty. (5) B&B MIXERS (Beavis & Butthead Mixers) - So the venue is great, their sound is great, the crowd is great and who is behind the mixing board? That's right! It's DJ George W Bush - smart as a psychotic snail. He uses the old 'start mixing with everything at full volume and see what happens' approach. The band stare at him from the stage with all their mind-control power to no avail. A headache may result. (6) A MURPHY (The standard Murphys Law type show) - The microphone keeps shocking your lower lip, you lose two guitar strings within a half-hour, the feedback fairy pays a visit and half-way through the second song, the power trips out. Treat with alcohol. (7) WA (Wrong Audience) - Let's say you're a pleasant pop band with some nice harmonies and like to dress in matching stripes on stage. How sweet. Unfortunately, the venue you are playing at is having a Slash Metal evening for the local bike gang. It is gradually becoming a "slash the artistes" audience. May cause severe intestinal pain. (8) BEATLES - If a member of the audience calls out, "Can you play Hey Jude?" then you have a case of the Beatles. Avoid at all costs. Cover songs are the colon cancer of South African bands. (9) FMD (Frustrated Musicians Delight) - You've met him. The guy in the third row squinting crazily at every move of your finger over the fret board. You can hear him thinking, "Yeh, that's just a basic C chord. Yeh, that's just a G#." You'd love to hate him but you can't because you remember when you were him. 'Summer Sun' - Zen Arcade Bright, breezy and bouncy track off Zen Arcade's recent 'Release' CD. 'Beach Girl' (demo) - Natalia Summer is a time for romance and young Natalia's heart aches for her waiter, who at 25 is far too old for her! Shame... 'Fabulous Day' - Redd Angel Let every day be a fabulous day this summer with this sing-along kwaito mix of Redd Angel's hit song from a while ago. 'Lilly Dance' - De Javu Forget the 'Ketchup Song' or the 'Macarena', shake your hips to the 'Lilly Dance'. Hot summer fun! 'Buccaneer' (1998 version) - McCully Workshop Watch out for these Pirates Of The Caribbean! 'Buccaneer' was originally released in 1978, re-recorded in 1988 featuring Jethro Butow on guitar and then again in 1998. So a new version in 2008 then guys? 'The Blue (J-Bay)' - Jamie Jupiter Chill-out to these laid-back sounds. Close your eyes and imagine you are actually soaking up the sun at Jeffrey's Bay. 'Let's Get Naked' - Evolver Great advice from PE's funkmeisters, if you happen to be at Sandy Bay. 'Write Your Name' - The Branch Reggae music always seems to give a bright, summer feeling, and this song does just that. What the f...? And it hits you. "Hiroshimama ... Papa ..." six slow hard drumbeats in your ears. Hyperventilation sets in. Then again. "Hiroshimama ... Papa ..." And DUMMM-DUUHHMM, six more deep dark beats. The violin gets totally pissed off, spits at the drummer, and 'Hiroshimama' becomes something you want to devour. So you can feed off its energy. Ah yes. Arno Carstens and Albert Frost's seemingly unusual side-project - 'Another Universe'. Twelve songs on an angelically decorated CD that thrash with slick electric Fender tantrums and unsettlingly sexy classical string solos, drum beats that jump from the jungle in 'African Sunrise' to the cold sidewalks of some tortured city in 'Viva La Liberty', songs fitted with amicable but volatile multiple personalities, and a violin with a thousand tongues. Don't be fooled by the laid-back, breezy sounds in 'Cooler Lifestyles'. It will turn on you. "Still digging up the holes in the bottom of the sea, to cool down a planet already in FLAMES..." Carstens tries to show you what awaits in 'Life's A Bitch'. It starts casual. "I'm waiting to be rescued from palm trees and heavy seas ..." and then you're told that money isn't edible and the fire in your soul isn't just your imagination. If you are familiar with Albert Frost's live persona, you will instinctively recreate him in your speakers with this CD. His head and upper body hunched over the Fender, disappearing into the strings where his fingers rule. Especially with the slyly organised chaos in 'Tonight's Dragons' and that kick-ass thing called 'Woman'. And here Carstens becomes the primal scream. You will scream with him. Don't be alarmed. "Can we return to heavy breathing ... tonight I'm a woman ... tonight I want women ... MORE, MORE, I GUESS I WANT ... MORE, MORE ..." Thought this would be normal mainstream stuff? MUHAHAHAHA! Ever heard a guitar sulk at the end of a song? Check out the last slow seconds of 'Woman'. Radio's already got his fat hands on the title track, 'Another Universe'. A finely crafted layer of notes and lyrics you will not find in the Idols' doldrums. Not ever. "Let's play the metal music slow, leave the car on the highway and go, nobody needs to know another universe, make a distance between us and them..." while Frost tiptoes through each pause and leaves titbits of heated riffs for you to savour. And Carstens leans back into the golden embroidered sofa with "From a galaxy of blues, to a universe we choose, no more crying and just maybe - somebody to hold." Too bloody beautiful for their own good. Damn! Unease comes to you with 'African Sunrise'. You know what's coming, but no need to brace yourself. Albert's sly little solo takes you in, and WHOOP. You fall off the wall. . "Oh there's a new found passion for the land in an African band ... is the rhythm coming home? Is the rhythm ... coming home?" Arno goes nuts. "Fat-fat, fat rhythm ... fat-fat, fat rhythm ..." with Albert as a second skin. The screams become a motto - "This love is no surprise, THIS IS AN AFRICAN SUNRISE!!" "Twinkle twinkle you are so single beyond these leaps of faith sleep with tigers, sleep with tigers ... Tickle trickery of evil blinded by undying trust and as we slide from room to room these ain't nightmares they are real ..." Crave them or be puzzled beyond infinity. This is New Porn. (CL) -------------- JO DAY - 'THE TRUTH' Jo Day rocks, big time. Her 4th album 'The Truth' has just been released and is an amalgam of recent tracks, brand new songs and some re-recordings. Jo has taken some of the best songs off her 2 previous releases, 'Icon' (2002) and 'No Warning' (2003) and included them here. Her big radio hit 'Remember' appears in it's original rock form as well as an unplugged version. 'Porn' also gets the unplugged treatment. Jo Day rocks hard and fast and is ably supported by Toxic Shame's Jon Buckley (guitars and production), Darren Drawbridge (guitars), Martin Labuschagne (bass) and Herman Kruger (drums). Together they are known as the B.A.N.D. ('Bad-Ass Nocturnal Dudes', it says here!). The closing track on 'The Truth' is a kick-ass live version of 'Icon''s 'Down And Dirty'. Jo's voice roars and the guitar soars. This is rock and roll, no question. But wait, there's more... there's a hidden bonus track too, except this one is on the Internet, not on the CD! Inside the CD cover you'll find a special website address where you can go and download an mp3, which is not available anywhere else, titled 'Nothin''. And it rocks. And speaking about websites, Jo has a great one. She really cares about her fans and www.joday.com really reflects that. Designed by zaZone's Tony de Buys, the site is quick and easy and full of info. It works straight away too, and the flash animations enhance the experience, rather than delaying it. Jo Day communicates with her fanbase regularly through her website and e-mail newsletters, so she deserves your support. As they say in the X-Files; "The Truth is out there". Well, go find it! 'Silver Moon' was not given a SA release, as far as we can ascertain, so how this copy made its way to a table in the market (the one facing on to Longmarket Street, if you're keen to find other strange bargains there) is quite a mystery. The CD was marked at a very low sale price indicating that the stall owners had no idea who Cindy Alter is. So it came home with me... Cindy Alter first emerged as the powerful vocalist for Clout, the SA all-girl group who sprung to international fame in 1978 when they took 'Substitute', a song rejected by Suzi Quatro, and turned it into a world wide smash, reaching Number 1 in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, and South Africa! 'Substitute' reached No 2 on the UK charts but was kept off the top spot by 'You're The One That I Want', the smash hit by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. I had some extra reasons for being thrilled at the group and Cindy's success as she had attended the same high school as me, which was Greenside High in Johannesburg (renowned more recently as the school that spawned Tweak!). Even then Cindy was already emerging as an entertainer with a big singing voice and a winning personality around the school, so we all followed her Clout success with pride. Following Clout's disbanding, Cindy landed up in the US where she married Ken Moore and released this album in 1999. Ken Moore played a large role in this album, producing and engineering the album and playing bass as well. 'Silver Moon' is clearly Cindy's "LA album", dedicated to her current home, with a lovely Californian graphic on the cover, and an easy and relaxed feel to all the music on the album. 'Silver Moon' features 10 songs all written by Cindy, and all falling into the sentimental ballad style, fitting snugly somewhere between the music of Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, and Cher. The songs range from the opening growl of 'Boulevard Of Love' to the Dixie Chicks-like country twang of songs like 'Butterfly', the title track, and the closing 'Welcome To LA'. 'South Of The Border' has Spanish guitars and Mariachi trumpets, while the gospelly 'Save Me' allows Cindy to give her voice free reign and range. What an unexpected treat! (SS) Ed. - Cindy was inducted into the SA Rock Hall Of Fame last year, read more at http://www.rock.co.za/halloffame -------------- ZERO TOLERANCE - 'A PERFECT LIFE?' Zero Tolerance are a young Cape Town band who first started appearing on local stages about a year ago. The band began building a strong following among the fanatical local fans by grabbing some important support gigs for bands like The Rudimentals and Hog Hoggidy Hog and using these gigs to showcase their energetic and tongue-in-cheek style. The Zero's began with their own mal brand of ska-punk, but their supporters seemed to prefer their ska material, so the band switched to ska-core and brought in a trombone to beef up their melodies and all-over sound. Zero Tolerance are Pater Walton (guitar and lead vocals), Matt James (guitar and vocals), Dan Neville (bass and shouting), Devon Martindale (trumpet and vocals), Darian Liprini (drums) and Nigel George (trombone). The band recorded their debut EP, 'A Perfect Life?' at Nevermute Studios in September and the EP features three new tracks: 'Living As Numbers', 'Kiff', and 'Mowgli'. Hard to choose the best track off 'A Perfect Life?', but 'Mowgli' gets our nod after it rocked the crowd during the Cape Town 6-piece's blistering set at last week's 'Riot In Da Madhouse' ska-punk festival in Pinelands. For all those who were there.... All together now:" Mowgli lives in a tree, swings around happily, he's our friendly human ape, loves vodka and getting suip". The Jungle Book, rewritten! Watch out for 'Mowgli' at SAmp3.com soon! At this stage you can order copies of 'A Perfect Life?' from Dan Neville (who doubles as the SA Rock Digest's SA Punk scribe!) at mailto:daniel@neville.za.net or phone 073 370 3792 -------------- chiaroscuro RELEASE 'A DEFINITION' chiaroscuro is a seven-piece Cape Town band that has been together since the beginning of 2003. The band has just released and launched its debut album, 'a definition', which is a collection of some songs written over the past three years by this diverse group of SA musicians. chiaroscuro are a band who prefer to chop and throw together two or three (or four or five) very different styles of music in an attempt at being distinctively South African. chiaroscuro has three vocalists - Matholdi, Chris Haw, and Langa Khanyile - while the other members of the band are Chris Haw (Acoustic Rhythm guitar), Jeremy Nel (Rhythm and lead piano), Langalihle Khanyile(Lead Alto Saxophone), Julia Wakeling (Violin), Dan Hampton (Bass), and Dave Bryant (Percussion). The band's primary song writers are Langa Khanyile, whose musical background is Jazz and African music, and Chris Haw, who has played and written mainly folk and alternative rock, combining these uncanny genres into most of their songs. The other musicians, whose backgrounds are equally as diverse, all have a unique part to play in chiaroscuro's sound and content. David Bryant writing 'Two Weeks Blue's and 'Reminiscing' has added a blues influence, while Dan Hampton ('When the sun is high') and Jeremy Nel ('Stop the rain/love me more') are punk and classical music lovers respectively. Mathlodi adds her silky smooth R 'n B flavour with 'Close to You' and Julia Wakeling holds a superb stage presence on the violin. The name "chiaroscuro" means the contrast between dark and light, and this band certainly aims to make that contrast clear. Coupled with this fresh and different style of music, their live performance is a feast of interaction between singers and musicians and between band and audience making a chiaroscuro night, a night difficult to forget. -------------- CLASSIC PICTURES RELEASE YES [AND OTHER] DVD'S IN SA Classic Pictures produce and release music DVD's from the Classic Rock Genre, and BMG SA distribute these titles in South Africa. From Rick Wakeman, to Motorhead, to Rock Compilations on DVD, to Yes, Classic Pictures produce a whole range of titles which are of interest to our readers. On 24th November 2003 Classic Pictures via BMG SA release 'YesSpeak' [DVD7065X] - a two-disc set featuring The classic line-Up Chris Squire, Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Alan White & Rick Wakeman, and narrated By Roger Daltrey {Who? - ed.} As part of the early 70's progressive music boom YES were quite obviously the leaders in their field, challenged only by the likes of ELP and Genesis. Mixing together classical music and Rock styles, YES became a huge stadium attraction and are still pulling huge audiences in their 35th Anniversary year. The 3-hour film shot during their 35th Anniversary year, during The 35th Anniversary European Tour, is an intimate and humorous observation into their music, their life on the road and their own personal views. The DVD shows footage from the Worldwide tour as well as providing revealing interviews with all the band members which allow for the real characters of the YES line=up to be expressed. YES have been touring regularly over the past few years but their anniversary year has shown just how popular the prog-rockers still are. With the 35th Anniversary Best Of album reaching No.10 in the UK charts it illustrates the continuing success of one of the world's most influential rock bands. www.classicpictures.co.uk -------------- THE ZAZONE.COM SA BAND SPOTLIGHT -------------------------------------- http://www.zaZone.com LAD, the dedicated webmaster of zaZone.com, throws his regular spotlight on one of the many SA bands currently affiliated to his SA music site. SOIL 7t7 Soil7t7 coming at ya! That's right - we cover the ever-dynamic Soil7t7. When I started zaZone.com they were one of the first bands I was introduced to and I was fortunate enough to see them at "WS5" - blue hair, boxing gloves and all... If you missed it you missed out!! The band is Franco on guitar and vocals, Bertus on drums, and Jay on bass and vocals. Soil7t7 have a full gig schedule, including Cafè Barcelona on 25 Oct with the Fake Leather Blues Band; The Nile Crocodile, Pretoria on 1 Nov; Tsunami (Gauteng) on 8 Nov With Orange, Underbelly, Fake Leather Blues Band. Cool Runnings, (Bloemfontein) on 14 Nov for the Orange Free State Year End party. Cliffy`s in Pietermaritzburg (Kwazulu-Natal) on 21 Nov (This is the first of the KZN leg of their Summer Tour.) Then on 22 Nov they play Burn (Durban) and 28 Nov sees them at Hill Billies in Port Shepstone and finally on 29 Nov at the Cayote Bar in Umhlanga. Their Summer Tour will cover KZN (21 Nov - 7 Dec) and they'll then be on the Cape Coast from about the 14th of Dec till New Year! (Fantastic - us Capetonians will get a chance to see one of SA's best bands!) The band is working on an acoustic set for the tour and the New Year. It will contain personal songs by each member. Every member will play guitar and sing in different songs. It is about half Soil 7t7 unplugged and half-personal songs, including some written 8-10 years ago. They should be recording a new EP in early 2004. The band has released a new single, 'Woman', launched on 15 Sep 2003. Their mp3 'Get Some' really captures Soil 7t7's energy and passion. Its unique brand of rock makes it a really memorable track. (Available from www.SAmp3.com along with several other Soil 7t7 tracks!) For a really exciting tour into the world of Soil7t7 visit their website at http://www.sarockdigest.com/soil7t7 and/or get their CD! QKUMBA ZOO -- 'WAKE UP AND DREAM' [ARISTA 07822-18931-2] Qkumba Zoo look real freaky on their CD cover, but once you get inside, the songs are rather conventional dance music and love songs in the modern flowing, formless, pop manner. As expected, the music is strongly synthesized, with guitars and vocals. In performance, the contrast between the innocent singing of, say, 'Cloud Eyes (I'm Scared, You're Scared)' and their 1996 ultra-modern showbiz styling must have been bizarre. Levannah, lead singer, has a clear and pretty voice. She could be Claire Johnston's little sister who wants to be wild, but is really just a sweet singer. In fact, Levannah and Olivia Newton-John could sing some of these songs as duets. It's when Qkumba Zoo gets uptempo that they hold my attention, as in this CD's single, 'The Child Inside'--a wildly driving, break-a-healthy-sweat, dance number. On their beautiful rendition of 'Weeping' they know not to mess with it--the arrangement is Bright Blue's, a cover version Qkumba Zoo style. Beautiful, haunting, powerful, profound, and deserving world recognition, the original, that is--and this version is sweetly sung. #4, 'Flesh and Blood' is exceedingly pleasant mid-tempo with some... is that Zulu? Yebo, I think it is. Back to rollicking fast dancing with 'Big'. Dance ecstasy. Qkumba Zoo vary the beat-count nicely, and the songs, always dominated by Levannah's so-feminine voice, are also variously decorated with African voices and effects (like the odd rubbery creaking on 'Into the Night'). Stopping and starting occasionally helps, and the counter-rhythms are effective. These constructs keep one from being lulled into a numb Alpha wave state. 'Rolling Stone' descibes Qkumba Zoo as "post-rock vegetarians from Jo'burg". I find them emminently listenable, but not as avant garde as they'd like me to think. It takes more than artsy-fartsy haircuts to be avant garde when making neo-disco for the '90s. Dance and enjoy the straight-ahead dance moves and grooves here, though, and some profound lyrics, some semi-profound lyrics, and some You're Kidding, Right? lyrics. Dance music, spacey numbers, and simple love songs sweetly sung. Electronica and a healthy girl's voice: New songs that sound like old songs. Good stuff, really, underneath the fin d'siecle imagery. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ________________________________ 5.A NAARTJIE IN THE UK ------------------------ London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music: PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY - PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY The Peanut Butter Conspiracy was a psychedelic band formed in Los Angeles in 1968 and had a minor hit single in the US with 'It's a Happening'... Ooops, sorry I've put the wrong record on, excuse me a moment while I change the record..... ..... Okay I'm back, this time I've got the South African soul outfit called Peanut Butter Conspiracy with their eponymous 1971 classic on the turntable. In terms of producing hit singles, this has to be the most successful South African album as 3 songs from it ('Understanding', 'Hold On To What You Got' and 'Amen') all made the top 5 on the SA charts. It's quite easy to see how this success came about, as this is an accomplished album of Gospel-styled soul. Brian Mulder's gruff James Brown-y (minus the ow!!!'s) vocals are set against full, warm instrumentation. Most will be familiar with the spoken, preacher style bits in 'Understanding' where the words are spoken over hushed music, and this technique is used extensively throughout the record to good effect. However, listening to the words, they are not always what one would expect from a preacher, particularly in 'Understanding' where Brian says that if he finds his girl messing around, he will get his axe and chop her head off (aah, true romance). But aside from insanely jealous axe wielding maniacs, the Conspiracy do take time out for a sensitive cover of the classic 'My Girl' which swings from heart rendingly tender to aching desire-filled angst. 'Hold On To What You Got' is also another love ballad that features an angelic choir opening and builds to an organ driven, almost psychedelic crescendo, so maybe they did have more than a name in common with the US Conspiracy. Other tracks like 'Resurrection Shuffle' and 'Free' feature that driving soul sound that give the vocal chords a good work-out. In fact there is not one duff track on this strong, tight and classy album. The Conspiracy decided to close the album with the rousing Negro Spiritual anthem 'Amen' and so be it. This catchy sing-a-long may not stick to the roof of your mouth, but will certainly stick to some part of your head. So all together now 'Ay Ay Ay Men, Ay Ay Ay Men, Ay Ay Ay men'. Tommy Oliver bolstered the local content of the top 5 with his debut single 'I Wanna Live' jumping up to number 3. 'Baker Street' was becoming a permanent fixture at the top of the charts in 1978 as it enjoyed its 6th week there. Despite this good run, the song would only be the 16th biggest hit of the year. German singer Lesley Hamilton eased herself into the top 5 with 'No Hollywood Movie'. The song reached number 3 in Switzerland but did not seem to chart in her native Germany. 1982 saw The Police enjoying their second week at number 1, but under real pressure from New Edition's 'Candy Girl'. The Soft Shoes had screamed up the charts to number 4 the previous week, but South Africans were probably getting over the media hype of 'Follow That Star' and beginning to realise just how naff the song was as it failed to move further up. Like 'Baker Street' in 1978, 'Perfect' enjoyed a 6th week at the top in 1988. Climie Fisher were enjoying their 11th week in the top 5. That is how I choose to sum up the 'Riot' because that is exactly what it was. Firstly the weather was perfect, a bit hot in the beginning but it didn't rain, so it's cool. The stage was nice and big and the sound totally up to scratch (I had the privilege of playing, and, from that point of view it was brilliant), all in all the venue was really good. The whole Fest started out with Two Weeks Old taking to the stage (and, for once, it actually started when it was supposed to, which is highly unusual for a punk show). They played a good set as did The Recruits, who played after them. The crowd was only around 100-200 people at this point and everybody who was there seemed to be trying not to dehydrate. Not everybody could visit the bar because there were security guards checking, so most had to quench their thirst at the food stand with the rad hippy guy running it. At 3.00 The Doppler Effect got up and did their thing to a crowd that was now picking up in numbers and slowly starting to liven up. The guys from The Doppler effect threw out some CD's but didn't play the best set I've seen them do, but it was very good by most standards. Next up was Zero Tolerance, and the crowd started to get going at this point and a decent skank pit was witnessed. Zero Tolerance also threw out a few CD's, and the crowd got to meet 'Mowgli', their friendly human ape, which was quite funny. If you go to their next show he just might be there.... Unfortunately I left the festival grounds after Zero Tolerance because I was really hungry and the hippy dude was not making his boerewors rolls yet so I had to mission to find someplace else. As a result I missed False Pretence and I only got to see the last Hoax song, which bummed me out a bit as everyone said they were both really good. I then discovered that the hippy dude was by then making his rolls, and there was a vegetarian food stall as well (good to see the organisers were thinking when they organised that). So that made me even more bummed because I could have stayed and not missed any bands. But that problem soon went away when The Rudimentals took to the stage and their sweet sounds of Afri/Ska floated through the air. The crowd at this point was around 350-400 people strong and the pit was huge - like 14 meters across huge!! This was probably due to the fact that the sun had lost some of it viciousness and nobody can resist the Rudies sound. Look out for the Rudies' first album that is coming out in the next two weeks. Then, with a very good slot, -War-On-Salt- played to a now very amped crowd. I can't really remember much of their set because I stage dived, hit my head, and got a slight case of temporary amnesia. Then Half Price, true to their word played their normal set in their underwear, and the mysterious new guy joined them on stage for the last half of their set. I can't really pass judgement on what they sounded like with two guitars because my amnesia was still plaguing me a bit. Then, after a bit of a wait, the mighty Hog Hoggidy Hog stepped into the limelight (actually it was a shower of angle grinder sparks) and, as usual completely blew the crowd away. They finally played 'Crack Wh*re' after having people shouting at them to play it for the past four months which was really cool because I decided that I was amped for yet another stage dive. But when I jumped and hit my head for the second time I had to leave to go and find a drink. All in all the show was a complete success and I even spoke to someone who said it was better that the Frenzal Rhomb tour earlier this year! Well you will all be pleased to know that it will be happening again, so look out for the 'Riot in the Mad House 2' because I can guarantee that it is going to be just as much fun. Well done to Hogmosh and DrunkPunk productions for putting the whole thing together. Thanks most of all to everybody that came out to support this Festival and help make something like this possible (sounds like I'm accepting a Grammy or something).
