The album’s 15 tracks, incorporating musical styles varying from rock and blues to reggae and ballads, are all brand new songs especially written by Koos and Valiant for this milestone in both their careers. ''n Jaar In Die Son' is their first fully combined production, even though they have been touring and performing together since the beginning of 1990. Valiant and Koos interchange on lead vocals on the album, while supporting each other's tracks with backing vocals and harmonies. ''n Jaar In Die Son' is published by Rhythm Records and will be distributed by Bowline. According to Valiant, the idea originated when Koos and his family visited his house earlier in 2003. "We realised that it is time to take stock of the roads that took us through the Afrikaans music industry, individually and together," says Valiant. "The idea caught fire, Rhythm Records decided to support the project, and Koos and myself started to write new material in a frenzy. Before we knew it, we were in the studio. Everything really happened so fast, it felt unreal." Koos said that this album only could have been created through true friendship, as well as a knowledge of and respect for each other's talent. "At the moment Valiant is definitely the best writer of Afrikaans lyrics. And with his musical knowledge and skill he helped me to enrich my contributions to the album. For an 'ou toppie' like me and a 'jong lat' like Valiant, I think we really complement each other's tracks." The themes of the album were founded on experiences from both artists. Stories of places, travels, the past and the present. From the difficult times of being broke musicians with only dreams and fire in their eyes, to being professional artists with experience in the bag and a family at home. And then, just to make sure they don't forget the stormy political memories from their start-up years, there's a protest song against America. One of the album's highlights is Koos's ‘Salaam’, a story about the Cape of Good Hope with a strong Malay musical flavour inspired by Dan Sleigh's novel, ‘Islands’. Love and loss are the two main themes running through the CD, which are movingly captured by Valiant's tribute to Johannes Kerkorrel titled ‘Kleinmond Koebaai’. 'Met my Stukkende Kitaar', written by Koos and Valiant, is a heavy, guitar-driven blues track, while the stripped ballad 'Insomnia' is in typical Kombuis-style. ''n Jaar In Die Son' was recorded at Sunset Studios in Stellenbosch and includes a collaboration of top musicians like Simon Orange (organ and piano), Schalk Joubert (bass guitar and double bass) and Tim Rankin (drums and percussion). Koos plays his own acoustic guitar and Valiant features on electric and acoustic guitars, dobro and harmonica. The CD is released this week. The hugely popular Cape Town pop-rock four-piece has been through a few changes since the release of their second album, ‘Room 2 Breathe’. The band’s first album, ‘A Life Less Strange’, was a major success boasting four hit singles as well as the ‘Life’ theme hit from the first ‘Big Brother’ series. ‘Room To Breathe’ didn’t fare as well as that debut album, and the band subsequently parted company, amicably, with their vocalist Tikara. Semisane then parted company (also amicably... hey, they’re an amicable bunch!) with their SA record label, BMG, to set up their Cherry Pie label. The remaining band members - founders (and original Black Diamond members) Sascha Muller (drums), Chris Acker (guitar), and bass player Nick Acker - then recruited their punky blonde new vocalist, Holly Rose (think Pink’s little sister), a young singer from the UK. Holly Rose co-wrote the two new songs on the band’s just-released EP and has immediately made her presence felt among the established lads in the band, giving Semisane a genuine international sound with her English accent. The first single release from Semisane’s new line-up is a catchy pop thing called ‘You Don’t Know’, backed with ‘Calling’, and a hip hop remix of ‘You Don’t Know’. ‘You Don’t Know’ works off a simple two note guitar riff which was actually contributed by the band’s drummer, Sascha, who was noodling around on a guitar during a recording session and landed up finding the missing piece to the song in progress. The EP also contains a “Behind the Scenes” video which follows the band recording the tracks with respected Cape Town producer, Tully McCully, at the Spaced Out Studios in Cape Town during 2003. http://www.semisane.com -------------- ‘GOING NOWHERE SLOWLY’ FOR A WHILE LONGER The producers of ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’, the excellent SA Travel series currently airing on TV3 on Sunday arvies at 5.30 (for those who still haven’t caught this great show), have announced that there's going to be a second series of ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’ starting in Feb 2004. Yaaaaay!!!! ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’ is a celebration of Southern African people, towns and scenic beauty as discovered and experienced by three travellers cruising around the mountains, deserts, coasts, dorps and highways of Southern Africa in a (now famous) 1970 red Chrysler 383 on a loosely plotted route. Starting on the Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape, the journey takes the travellers through our country and heads into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia. While many South Africans know the established spots on the travellers’ route, ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’ exposes the lesser known and oft derided regions and towns of South Africa, and takes leaps of faith on unknown roads, just to see what or who is on the other end. One such route led them to discover a ski resort in the Drakensberg, and a bunch of authentic cowboys in the frontier town of Maclear in the Eastern Cape. All the artists and songs featured on the ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’ soundtrack are by South African artists and are given a full on-screen billing when they are played. The Production Company making the series is also looking for even more SA music to feature during the upcoming series’ half-hour episodes. So anyone who wants to grab the kind of exposure that ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’ can offer your music should take note that all bands and artists can send demos/CD's and, Very Important... a short biography, to: Aidan Harper C/o Ripchord PO Box 12540 Mill Street Cape Town 8010 For any more info they can email Aidan at info@ripchord.co.za Ripchord will also shortly be releasing a series of compilation CD's of all the music from the show. That CD should be available in stores before the end of the year. People can go and check it out and can get a full song track listing by clicking on the music link at www.goingnowhereslowly.com Watch Going Nowhere Slowly on Sundays, 5:30pm SABC3 (repeated on Saturdays at 3:30pm on TV3) -------------- OPPIKOPPI PRETORIA 2003 - LINE-UPS AND ACTS OppiKoppi Pretoria 2003 kicks off on Friday 28th November, and already the line-up for the massive two-day SA music festival is looking un-missable. The line-up has finally (almost) been confirmed and is one of the most exciting to date. Bands, artists and performers will be spread over 4 stages, with some carnival-type performances taking place around the festival market area. All the stages are indoors in case of rain, but they provide a 'club in the middle of nowhere scene' as well. As part of the SADEC Initiative, OppiKoppi, with the help of the Norwegian Arts organisation, Mmino, is bringing a line-up of great artists from around the Southern African region. This forms the first part of the first year of their joint SADEC project. Rather than set up a separate stage, OppiKoppi have decided to incorporate the artists into the festival, and create a truly mixed Southern African showcase. Look out for the following artists: Blacklisted, Mabulu, 340ml, Casa de Capoeira and Kapa Dech from Mozambique; Rude Boy and his One Azania group and Wambali Mkandawire, a Malawian and winner of a Best African Artist SAMA Award. That is a very diverse group of artists! Kapa Dech are eight young musicians from Mozambique, from house/hip hop, Mozambique traditional and rock backgrounds, came together in 1996 with the aim of bringing new sounds to the Mozambican music scene. The band has two albums, ‘Katchume’ and ‘Tsuketani’ and has toured extensively, including Sweden, France, Zimbabwe, Norway and South Africa. Wambali (Mkandawire) is a deeply religious man, but it is his political convictions that saw his songs banned in his native Malawi. His fusion of traditional Malawian music with pop influences has proved popular and in 2003 he won a Best African Artist SAMA. Hailing from Mozambique, the world music group, Mabulu, are no strangers to the globe at large, having toured extensively throughout Europe, Africa and Australia. They play refreshed traditional music (a mix of marrabenta and breaks) in an enthusiastic live show. Rude Boy Paul and One Azania need (almost) no introduction. Rude Boy has given us an amazing album of remixes of African artists titled ‘Azanian Pulse - First Offering’. Check out the live performance with his band featuring top local musicians, launching to the young masses of the world pure Afro groove and blissful musical enlightenment. Born in Brazil, Casa de Capoeira is a style of dance that has spread to many countries, including Mozambique and South Africa. A troupe of 20 dancers brings this style to OppiKoppi, which is best described as Martial arts meets breakdance. Sort of. Blacklisted are also from Maputo, and play an interesting mix of Jazz, African rhythms and breakbeat. Look out for some special local guests in their set. - Having so many great Mozambican bands in the house, it would not be the same without 340ML, Maputo/Jo’burg's best dub band. In history, ever! The international exchange between Oppikoppi and various European festivals enters its fifth year this year. International bands, performers and DJ's come from Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Canada and France. In Turn, OppiKoppi has sent various artists to these festivals via this exchange program. With the support of DACST and various European government organisations, Mandoza, Bongo Maffin, Max Normal, Tumi and the Volume, Krushed & Sorted, Felix La Band and more have performed at festivals around Europe. These festivals include Lowlands from the Netherlands, Pukkelpop from Belgium and Quart from Norway. Acts that are coming to OppiKoppi from abroad include Beef, who are an 8-Piece Dutch reggae outfit complete with horn section and jump-up reggae tunes. This will be their first trip to South Africa. They also sing in English.- Bonus! With the release of their new album, BEEF establishes itself at the top of the Dutch pop music scene. Once in a while there is a band that single-handedly gives new meaning to a music genre, and BEEF is certainly one of them. www.beef.nl Flip Kowlier sings in West Flemish, which should be enough of a party trick. With well-timed Tuba notes and off beat riffs, he manages to twist the tunes up even more. Be prepared for a very interesting set from the brother from Belgium. (Flip also appears in 't Hof van Commerce who have been to South Africa before). T'hof van Commerce are the Belgian Hip Hop trio who toured here in May this year, and could not wait to return for more! An energetic live set that entertains throughout, with DJ 4T4 from Ultrasonic on the decks, a crash course in Flemish is advised. E-Quad was formed in 2001 by bass-player/composer Eric van der Westen from the Netherlands. Eric plays acoustic, electric double bass and bass-guitar. He is best known as a composer and acoustic double bass player in jazz, improvised and world music. The band has found an exciting balance working with samples and beats and acoustic instruments. A-Trak - hails from Canada, and has won quite a few prestigious DJ titles. By the age of 15, he had already been crowned World Champion and invited to join the celebrated Invisibl Skratch Piklz by DJ Q-Bert. He is also the youngest DJ to be inducted into DMC's DJ Hall of Fame. Zampanos, from France, are a circus/street theatre group. Their acts include singing, acting and mime, dance, acrobatics, magic, trapeze acts, spitting fire, juggling, clown acts, among many others. Ultrasonic is Fresh 4T4 and Uwe Teichert, based in Brussels. The names of the four OppiKoppi 2003 Stages are: Big Pit Stage - Big stage, lots of lights, bells, whistle and beeeg bands. Upper Pit Stage - Alternating with the big pit stage, the upper stage ensures a virtual constant flow of tunes in the main arena. Skelm Stage (Presented by Red Bull and SL) - caters for the art, poetry, film and related musical performances. 206 Dance Stage (Presented by Levi's) - will be the host of 206 production's 8th birthday celebration. Friday’s line-up focus is broadly speaking on pop/rock and breakbeat acts while Saturday's focus falls more on hip-hop, house and African rhythms. The full line-ups (to date) are: Friday 28th November 2003: Brasse Vannie Kaap, Tweak, Boo!, The Narrow, Sugardrive, Arno Carstens' New Porn, Tidal Waves, Somerfaan, Karen Zoid, Homegrown Hints, Honey B, A Blunted Stuntman, Kenzhero, Flip Kowlier, E-Quad, A-Trak, Kid Fonque, Ultrasonic, Bed on Bricks Saturday 29th November 2003: Brenda Fassie, Max Normal, Skwatta Kamp, Tumi and the Volume, Godessa, Carlo Mombelli and the Prisoners of Strange, Wambali, Beef, Rise, 340ml, Mabulu, Kapa Dech, Rudeboy Paul and Azanian Pulse, Corne & Twakkie, Kenzhero, Lebo Mashile, Ntsiki Mazwai, 't Hof van Commerce, Tamara Dey and the Boys, Naked DJ, C-Live, Nutty Tek, Dolla featuring Hidden Force, Trinity, Amu, Shaun Duvet, Fletcher, Bionic, Sudan, The Boogieman, DJ Christos, Zampano, Casa de Capoeira, MXO, Cashless Society, Two Twiggs Experiment More information on the above bands is available from Oppikoppi: Tel: (012) 346-2011 Web:www.oppikoppi.co.za -------------- RUSTLER’S VALLEY NEWS November 28-30, 2003 Four years ago, Jeanne White Eagle (from the United States) was given a vision of a "singing dance," a dance whose purpose was to awaken the memory of who we are and where we come from... a dance to bring what has been separated, back together again. The name of the dance is "For the One". In a time of stark polarisation on our planet, choices are being made that have the potential of creating mass divisiveness at many levels. It is time to remember who we are... that we and all life are connected as parts of a single consciousness. And as each of us interacts with our world on a daily basis, we either create further separation or we remember who we are and find the grace and strength to love what is in front of us in each passing moment. In this dance, as the drum carries the dancer to the sacred centre, the dancer will sing spontaneously the sounds that will take her or him to the original vibration from which all creation comes. In this space, we experience ourselves as the hollow bone through which Spirit blows the breath of life... And it is here that we remember that there is no separation. The time of separation is over! Come join us in November at Rustler's Valley in South Africa. The weekend begins at sunset on Friday, November 28th, and goes to sunset on Sunday, November 30th. There is a specified donation fee requested of all dancers. This is to help cover expenses needed to put on the dance (maintenance costs for the arbor, food purchases for the support team, etc.). There is no charge for ceremony. This is a fasting dance and details will be given to those who register. For more information on the donation fee and to register, contact Jeanne White Eagle & John Pehrson directly on email mailto:Jwhteeagle@aol.com or Niyan at mailto:niyan@marimbanet.org.za www.marimbanet.org.za -------------- DALA FLAT MUSIC October was a great month for Dala Flat Music, the new Cape music collective project. Thanks to all who shared in the magic, music and fun at the live recordings at the Independent Armchair Theatre. October saw the venue play host to the Dala Flat musicians - Mac McKenzie (composer, guitar), Hilton Schilder (bow, piano, percussion), Clement Benni (drums), Mark Fransman (sax). Also to the composers' workshop students - Alden De Koker (recorder), Jonathan Rubain (base guitar), Keagon Williams (drums), Ronia Karl (guitar) - the Kaapse Klopse, DJ Andre Manuel and poets, James Matthews, Peter Snyders, Chantel Erfort, Devious and Toni Stuart. On October 30 Dala Flat Music rounded off their series of Flat Sounds Sessions at the Armchair Theatre with the final instalment of live recordings. Apart from the usual mix of live goema, jazz, poetry and the eclectic set, this Thursday includes a special electronic set featuring Mac McKenzie, Hilton Schilder and DJ Andre Manuel live on the mixing board and samplers. The band experimented with electronic crossover last week and, after a great response, has put together a whole new experimental experience that is sure to move you off those comfortable armchairs. And there is even more to celebrate! Last Monday Mac celebrated his 52nd birthday, and two of their ambassadors (Hilton and Mac) play a farewell gig as they head off to New Orleans and Germany, respectively, to take the music of the Flats to a wider audience, and spread the word of the Dala Flat Music experience. -------------- RP STUDIOS EMERGING SOUNDS COMPETITION - AN UPDATE Stick-Up Kid played their hearts out last Sunday taking top honours in the October regional finals of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition. They got through to the finals as a wild card entry, and the panel of judges - comprising Nick Grubb (5FM programme manager), Jono Hall (SL arts editor), Peter Lacey (Musketeer Records), Raphael Domalik (Sovereign Entertainment) and Bojan Andregevic (Sony music) - felt the group impressed enough and you can find out why at Tempos on Saturday evenings between 18:00 and 20:00. Also in the line-up will be Peace PRO and Samba sensation Red Zebra, who together invite the public to bring their own drums and percussion instruments in support of the 20 000 Drum Vision. Red Zebra, the Cape Town-based street children’s drumming initiative, will be showcasing emerging musical talent among Cape Town’s street children at a free public Healing Festival of Drums at the V&A Waterfront’s Amphitheatre on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 November between 15h00 and 16h00. The effects of playing or listening to the Djembe played correctly are known to heal the spirit through bringing people together and helping to opening the heart, and the organisers of the Cape Town Earth Festival look forward to hosting hundreds of Capetonians and visitors alike. Traditionally the Djembe is played in Mali for special events such as marriage, initiation rituals, births, deaths and harvests. It is believed that the energy or vibration of the highly evolved traditional rhythms imbues the respective event with energy that then ensures its success. Sidi Sangare was born on 9 June 1972 in Bamako, Mali, West Africa. He grew up in the region of Wassolo, which has produced some of the best West African musicians. From his early childhood, he learnt the traditional way of Djembe from the old grand masters of Djembe. At the age of 17, he became an official member of the National Ballet of Mali and toured with them all over Africa for five years performing Djembe and traditional West African dance. At the age of 22, Sidi moved to Cape Town to continue his career, and has become renowned as a drumming master over the past eight years. Sidi operates from a studio and shop, where he conducts private and group lessons in Djembe and Doununba (base drum), and also sells finely-crafted Malian Djembes. Sidi has also led team building, motivational and healing workshops for large corporations throughout South Africa. These include BMW, Old Mutual, Pick ‘n Pay, ABSA, and Standard Bank. These corporate drumming workshops, some with up to 1 000 participants, have met with great success. Sidi has recently presented workshops in Berlin and Munich, Germany in co-operation with peace organisations such as Sabisa Berlin. Sidi has performed with some of Africa’s most famous musicians, such as Baaba Mal, Cheikh Lo, Salif Keita, and Miriam Makeba. He has also performed by invitation for the Saudi Royal family. Sidi heads up the band Djina Djembe, comprising select Sangare students playing accompaniment Djembe and Doununba, while Sidi solos and sings. Red Zebra have elected to use percussion instruments due to their accessibility to all people, with percussion by its very nature encouraging expression as opposed to purely a focus on technical ability. Participants are encouraged to tap into their own natural rhythm, in so doing realising their full individual and group potential. Members of the public are invited to bring along their own drums and percussion instruments to the Cape Town Earth Festival performances. For its part, the environmentally-themed Cape Town Earth Festival, which is an initiative of the City of Cape Town as a 1 year return to the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002, will run between 14 and 23 November, and will boast several music events - not only at the V&A Waterfront, but also at the various Mini Festivals taking place in communities. By way of example, Atlantis will boast a music workshop by Black Noise at the Wesfleur Sports Field on 14 November. The Langa Community Hall will host a LoveLife activity on 17 November, which will include music, presentations, and roleplays and an Earth Festival Celebration outside the Grassy Park Library on Saturday 22 November. That was a great gig, despite the facts that monitors died, guitar rigs had PMS and Six of Nine’s David Kirkwood split his pants from pocket to knee. The band has spent a week in pre-production for the recording of the first official Six of Nine single (as yet un-named), and the band have assured their fans that as soon as it is ready it will go to SAmp3.com and all the local stations. Six of Nine have a full schedule of gigs lined up for the holidays, starting at the Mercury Lounge with local alternative maestros Lazarus on the 27th November, where Six of Nine will be debuting some new songs. In December, Six of Nine will be gigging all over the Cape in places like Cape Town, Table View, Stellenbosch, Somerset West and other venues to be added. www.sixofnine.com -------------- AFRICAN CREAM - A NEW LOOK AND FIVE NEW RELEASES African Cream is the Johannesburg-based SA record company which is currently putting out the coolest looking CD packages to be found in SA CD stores or elsewhere. The label has already released albums by SA groups Khumbula and Amaryoni, as well as a very successful double CD compilation called ‘The Great South African Trip’. That compilation has proved to be a very popular seller to both South Africans and tourists, due to its strong track listing. African Cream has also just released the second album from Mbube vocal group Amaryoni called ’Aza’Pella’. The label recently redesigned its branding and packaging and has just released four new Southern African compilations into the market. The CDs all share an effective pastel branding designed by Cape Town designer, David Gimpel, with original photographs by noted Cape Town nature photographer, Jeremy Jowell. The new African Cream logo features a lioness roaring (singing?) into a microphone, an African tribute to that famous His Master’s Voice “dog and speaker” logo. The four new titles are: ‘The Essential South African Trip’, a single CD which is described, accurately, as “a concise compilation of the greatest SA music and moments”. This CD includes strong tracks by artists including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Busi Mhlongo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Bayete, Johannes Kerkorrel, Vusi Mahlasela, and Nelson Mandela (his inauguration speech which opens the album!). On a broader scale is the single CD entitled ‘The Great Pan-African Trip’, which takes a good look at the continent’s biggest music names like Youssou N’Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Pappa Wemba, Oliver Mtukudzi, Cesaria Evora, Alpha Blondy, Drummer Of Burundi, and the sole SA representative, Khumbula with ‘Isimanjemanje’. The ‘African Earscapes’ CD is the result of a project put together by some of South Africa’s leading musicians and producers to record “the perfect aural soundtrack for your African movies”. The artists featured on ‘African Earscapes’ include Neill Solomon, Andre Abrahamse, and Deepak Ram. The final new compilation release from African Cream is titled ‘Lullabies From Mother Africa’ which is similar to the recent ‘Thula Project’ lullabies CD. The African Cream lullabies album is “an enchanting collection of beautiful, soothing melodies”, clearly aimed at providing gentle sleepy music for both babies and their parents! www.africancreammusic.co.za Buy: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 -------------- OCTOBER RELEASES AT ONE WORLD DVD Various Artists - 'Best Of South African Jazz' With DVD's sure to be high on Xmas shopping lists, expect a long list of new SA music titles. In response to many requests for more info on Larry, here is his full story up till the present: Larry Amos was born in Gauteng on the 6th of April, 1952, and from a very young age he aspired to being a musician, and started playing guitar at the age of 9. Performing at family parties and school functions his sweet voice was known to make the women cry! At 15 years he formed a band that went on to win 3rd prize at a Battle of the Bands held at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg. After school Larry went to Cape Town to pursue his love for music by working during the day and performing as a guest artist at various nightclubs at night. After 2 years in Cape Town, Larry came back to Johannesburg and teamed up with his brother Robbi Robb and Govinda Davidopoulis as a trio doing parties, functions and guest spots around town. Larry began his professional career after signing with an agency as a solo artist with his first gig in the Persian Room at the Four Seasons Hotel in Durban. He toured the country from there, including a stint as backing vocals and understudy to Riff Raff in the ‘Rocky Horror’ production in Lesotho (it was banned at the time in SA). He also performed on the TV show, ‘Beat 79’ doing one of his own compositions, ‘Mother Nature’. Baxtop was formed in Johannesburg in 1978 with Larry Amos on guitar and vocals, Tim Parr (guitar, vocals), Fuzzy Marcus (guitar, vocals) and Bruce Williams (drums, vocals) and was billed as “the best blues-rock-boogie band that never came out of the American South”. ‘Work It Out’ is still rated as one of the Top Ten Albums of South Africa according to Garth Chilvers. Baxtop became South Africa's top original blues-rock band, signed a recording contract with WEA records, and had a number one hit with ‘Jo Bangles’ and also won a Sarie Award. The band also toured with Millie Jackson on her South African visit. In 1982 Baxtop disbanded, and Larry formed the Larry Amos Blues Band. The Blues Band was followed by the Naughty Boys, who released one of the last seven-singles to be pressed in South Africa. Larry composes his own music and currently has over 60 titles registered with SAMRO. In 1994 the R.A.W. CD was released, which was a co-operative effort with Bruce Williams (previously the drummer for Baxtop), and enjoyed moderate success with one of the numbers, ‘Dance of Love’, being chosen to appear on 'Monster Hits'. In 1991 Larry went to Ireland and joined Tim (Parr) performing at the Galway Busking Festival, and various venues including as an opening act for two concerts of Don Baker (Bono of U2's favourite harp player), where the audiences went wild for his original numbers and exciting guitar playing. Later, in 1995 Larry and Tim supported Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Standard Bank Arena and were complimented by them for their performance and the outstanding song, ‘Let the Sun’. ‘Let the Sun’ is featured on Larry’s ‘Going Up’ CD, which is on sale at gigs around the country as a compilation of various aspects of his work. Amos has also recently released a demo CD, ‘Un’, which is comprised mainly of ballads, and shows another aspect of this talented artist. In 1998 Larry did the vocals on Willem Fourie's ‘Wondering’ CD released by Makhulu, He has also done guitar parts on Frank Lepo's (Sankamoto) solo album, as well as Sinyaka's ‘Why isonda ma gents’. He has jammed locally with the likes of Johnny Fourie, Alistair Coakley, Mike Faure, George Worthmore, Jethro Butow, Julian Laxton, Mike Slavin and numerous others, including a surprise session with Shaun Phillips at Tandoor, Rockey Street! Larry has done gigs at various venues, including: Frascas, Honeydew; Blues Room, Sandton; Opiyard, Pretoria; Bohemian, Millpark; Unplugged Kitchen, Broederstroom; Killarney Mall, Killarney; Rustlers Valley, Free State; Blue Naartjie, Orange Grove; Origin, Orange Grove; Page 3 Studio Theatre, Magaliesberg; Carry's, Northriding; Zeplins, Cape Town; Log Cabin, Cape Town; Barley Corn, Cape Town; Brass Bell, Cape Town; Radium Beer Hall, Orange Grove; Big Easy; Banbury Cross, Northgate; Caesars Palace, Jhb International; Bass Line, Melville; Julian's, Cresta; The Showcase, Northgate; Cliffy's, Pietermaritzburg; Splashy Fen 2001, Underberg; Tempo's; Catfish & Caterpillar and Bingelela - KZN; Tusk Inn - DBN; Churchills & The Stagecoach - PMB, Rags - Gauteng. At the end of June 2001, Larry Amos launched a SAB-sponsored event called ‘Blues in the Berg’ at the Caterpillar and Catfish, which was followed by a three week working holiday jamming with Russell Taylor at Bingelela just outside Bergville. The South African Music Week took place between 24 - 28 August and he was invited to feature at various events in Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Larry was also involved in the vocals and guitar for the soundtrack of a SABC TV programme first flighted on 23 October 01, done in conjunction with Louis van Rensburg. He has also done various radio spots including the recent ‘R2.50 blues’ number for the new Wednesday Lotto draw. The latest development in this perennial performer's life, is the opening and running of a pub and music venue on the KZN South Coast. Located on the beach front of Port Shepstone, the "King Prawn" has a fantastic sea view, spacious interior, good vibe and promises to become the ideal meeting place for all music lovers - come along and see! It has already hosted some of the finest KZN musicians and the mission is to provide great entertainment as well as offer bands of all genres a venue to expose their talents to a different audience. March 2002 saw Larry team up with some of South Africa's greatest blues musicians at the True Blue Blues Festival that took place at the Oude Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch, Cape. This was a show that featured ‘Saffire - the Uppity Blues Women’ from the USA as well as showcasing local talent such as the Blues Broers, Delta Blue, Willem Fourie and other notable musicians. Larry also performed at two Cape Town venues on this trip, namely '206' and 'The Armchair Theatre' where he played to a crowd of long-time friends, musicians and fans together with Tim Parr, Mally Aberdeine and Paul Tizzard. In March 2002, Larry was joined on stage once again by long time friends and musos, Bruce Williams and Fuzzy Marcus (all ex Baxtop), at the Southern Cross Festival near Mooiriver. And what an awesome show that was - anyone who was there was moved by the talent and tightness of the guys - and they had only rehearsed at the King Prawn for a few hours the night before! Larry delighted the crowds by playing with his teeth while maintaining the melody - not a sight often seen! In April Larry performed at The Winston in Durban for the Blues Train - a weekly gathering of some of Durban's more dedicated and interesting musical appreciators and performers. Larry also entertained friends and travellers in the Central Drakensberg at Thokosiza and then appeared at the Splashy Fen Festival near Underberg in the Southern Drakensberg. Despite Larry Amos’ current working commitments, he still finds the time to perform wherever possible, exhibiting the extraordinary guitar talents that have consistently kept him at the top of the SA blues guitar heap! Ed’s note - we also received a reply from Joan regarding future gigs by Larry Amos: Joan writes: “Thanx for your interest - unfortunately as you may be aware Larry is involved with the King Prawn Pub in Port Shepstone, and so doesn't get much time for gigs at this time of year - although he does play on request here. He will be playing on 21 November (2003) here, as part of our town's Nokia Great South African Journey experience”. THE RUDIMENTALS This week we deviate from the Rock scene a little and focus on the Ska band, The Rudimentals, who are an eight piece band who hail from Cape Town who have a very dynamic sound, but are difficult to fit into a particular slot in terms of origin. Their brand of reggae is not particularly Jamaican, European or South African, yet has influences of each, forming their own great brand of Africa Ska. The band is made up of: Mista Boss on vocals and on-stage antics who can often be heard calling for da Selecta to give him a tune (the "selecta" bits are, unfortunately, not on the CD -- it's more of a studio recording rather than the wilder live versions of the songs). Professa Dirk on keyboards; Rossdabone on da Trombone (the Ladies’ favourite); The General JoJo on trumpet; The Reverend on sax; Mista E on guitar; The Mighty D on drums and Barry Bass on... you guessed it... bass guitar. The band has recently released a video of ‘Noh TV’. The song ‘Noh TV’ features on their new CD, ‘More Fire’. It's a collection of their best songs from their current sets played at gigs and opens with the addictive ‘Rudimentals inna da house’ and goes on to the fantastic ‘Suzanne’ (a song which you can’t get out of your head). ‘Big Boss’ is another one that anyone who's heard this band will know. The CD then goes through a ‘Mr Skunk’, ‘Storm inna D-Cup’ and of course, the excellent ‘Noh TV’. The ‘Two Boots’ track is a funny track about... two boots... showing that this band could almost sing about anything and make it sound good! The launch of the CD was a huge event and was an event to be seen. Held at The Valve in Cape Town on 25th November, it was opened by Spindle Sect (who performed an outstanding gig) and 7th Son. (See the review on zaZone.com) The Rudies are working on the details of a European tour... watch this space. As for gigs: The Rudimentals can be seen at Stones on the 13th of November; The Obsfest on the 6th of December; Mercury for the Academy Awards on the 15th of December and the 6th of Feb 2004 at Up The Creek. These are all in the Western Cape (sorry Gautengers and others!) Other gigs and festivals are to be confirmed, so watch out for gigs at their web site and at zaZone.com) Respekt, Aaaaaii! CELTIC RUMOURS - 'SLOW RAIN': THE COMPLETE CELTIC RUMOURS [FRESH CD 136] In 'The Complete Celtic Rumours' one can hear the growth of a talented band. This is ‘80s-sounding melodic rock from before the Sons of Nirvana made melody and harmony dispensable theories. We start with 'Wish' and a solo voice that takes off with the band. The next song, 'This Day', also flies exultantly. Track three, almost an instrumental, eases us into Celtic Rumour until we're singing along to their hit 'Slow Rain'. The river of rock rises and carries us along with drums, guitars, and real singing. 'These Nations' is a powerful song, an anthem whose chorus jumps out: "These nations are my pride, and this is my country and this is my land/I'm not proud of what we did here, but I'm proud of who I am...." Wow, I can identify with these lyrics still so meaningful--are these guys secretly Americans? As 'The Complete...' progresses, their songs grow more creative and developed in songwriting, musicianship, and confidence. The Celtic Rumours musos seemingly become looser, but really play more in control and more proficiently at their craft. 'Crazy Angel', finger-poppin' cool. 'Happily Ever After', a snatch of 'Light My Fire' slides naturally into the production. 'Everything in Heaven' has neat choral background harmonies. 'Never' has a harsher edge with bold changes and a cocky attitude. Celtic Rumours strive for effects strikingly different in each song. In 'Love and War' they chant a choral "War" refrain. The Clash's 'Should I Stay' has a lead guitar riff more strident than the original, a thumping rocker Joe would have strummed air guitar to. In fact, this lead fits with what a Houston bar band lead guitarist once told me, "I never use a song's exact lead guitar as a sign of respect." And he was right: do it differently, or do it better, or don't do it. And Celtic Rumours rocks. This complete Celtic Rumours begins pretty with soaring melodic rock songs, and showcases nice rock chops and mature lyrics, with strong drumming, and. Celtic Rumours would have sounded at home playing in any international arena after a Big Sky opening set.... During George Baker's rule, Maria had stuck stubbornly to the number 2 spot, but now dropped to 3. With Tommy Oliver at number 4 and Angelika Illman and Billy Forrest as Geli & Billy jumping up to number 5, there was a trio of local acts in the top 5. Another local Tommy, Tommy Dell was scoring with his CB inspired 'Teddy Bear'(originally a US hit for Red Sovine) which moved up to number 5 in 1978. Those who hated 'Baker Street' (and there can't have been many) were Dancing in the City as Gerry Rafferty's 8 week run at the top came to an end. 'The Safety Dance' became the 5th song by a Canadian act to top the charts. Terry Jacks, Gordon Lightfoot, Bachman Turner Overdrive and Dan Hill were the previous Canadians to achieve the feat. The Eurythmics, meanwhile, followed up the smash hit 'Sweet Dreams' with 'Love is a Stranger'. The latter out-performing the former as 'Sweet Dreams' had peaked at number 5. Yello climbed a place in 1988, as did Matt Bianco (a group, not a person). That meant that Underworld and Robert Palmer both dropped a place while Fairground Attraction looked un-shakeable at the top, enjoying a ninth week there. Even before I had listened to the CD I was suitably impressed with the overall production. The cover and inlay artwork is beautifully done and it definitely fits the image that the band is trying to put across. Then, when I pressed play and the first two notes of their fantastic horn section blasted through my speakers (I had cranked the sound for this one) all my expectations for the CD were realised. The album contains all of the familiar Rudies songs plus a few new ones, my favourites being ‘Dub Too Much’, 'Mr Skunk’ and ‘Storm Inna D-Cup’. Having some of their roots in reggae the lyrics to some of the songs are quite socially aware, the lines that pop to my mind are "This season's latest fun accessory - a latex number of necessity" and "This is the hype that you can't ignore so, wake up Thabo from the floor" Those lyrics come from the song ‘Wear A Hat’ which if you have not guessed it is a song about Aids in SA. The album was recorded at Plow Studios and has been a long time in the making but that was to be expected from an eight-piece band. There are lots of little surprises on the CD like if you slip it into your PC you can watch a brilliant music video of "Noh TV" which I must add would totally contradict itself if it was played on TV. So Mista Boss, The Reverend, The Mighty D, Professa, Jo-D, Barry Bass, Misa E and Rosdabone (collectively known as the Rudies) have come up with a great album and hopefully there will be more from where it came.
