MUSIC FOR FUNERALS - RADIO RATS

New album from The Radio Rats due out very soon.

More info here...
http://www.rock.co.za/files/radiorats_funerals.html

NIGEL VERMIN MEETS JONATHAN RAT!!!

SAfm 104 - 107 is well-known for its documentaries. Subjects include
everything from the Anglo-Boer to Duke Ellington; from Michael Mayer to the Millennium.
The generic title for these half-hour features is THE INNER EAR.

Nigel Vermaas's two documentaries on Radio Rat, Jonathan Handley, air in the last two weeks of this month.

Some background:

In 1953 Jonathan Handley was born in Tanzania (Tanganyika). His family
then moved to Springs. "Being a geologist" says Jonathan, "my father
oscillated between Welkom and Springs from the Fifties to the Seventies".

In these two towns, Jonathan learnt to play the guitar, and in between
studying for his medical degree, formed the Radio Rats, who in the late
70's achieved local fame with the album, INTO THE NIGHT WE SLIDE and their single ZX DAN, recently voted by readers of S.A. Rock Digest as all-time top S.A. single.
http://www.freevote.com/booth/sapop

Twenty years on Dr Jonathan Handley works in Orkey (on the mines) and lives in Klerksdorp, where he records and archives music relentlessly. His sharply observed characters form the basis for most of his songs and musicals, which he distributes by mail order on his Radium Wreckords label.

These characters range from Oom Hennie Nel, a lonely Climax windmill
salesman in SOUTH AFRICAN GOTHIC, to Crocodile Priest, the rise and fall of whom is detailed in PSYCHOCOUNTRY.

But now?... a new Radio Rats recording is in the mix. And so in November Nigel Vermaas of SAfm journeyed to Klerksdorp to speak to Jonathan and some of the locals who know him.

"Jonathan" says Nigel, is "driven not so much by his music as by his
writing. He's a writer who puts his words to music. He's funny, he's witty and he's dedicated. And he's disarmingly self-deprecating."

In THE INNER EAR on Wednesday 19 January at 20:02; repeated on Sunday 23rd at 9:30, SAfm presents The Return of the Radio Rats - Nigel Vermin Consults a Doctor, in which Nigel looks at the Radio Rats phenomenon

and

in THE INNER EAR on Wednesday 26 January at 20:02; repeated on Sunday 30rd at 9:30, you can hear Jonathan Rat is Alive And Well and Living in Klerksdorp - Nigel Vermaas asks "Why?". This programme looks at Handley in the context of a medium-sized town in the North-West Province. The singer/songwriter, who knew the late James Phillips well, also reveals another side to the doomed Cherry Lurcher.

"Jonathan Handley is one of the unsung heroes of South African music", says Nigel, "and these programmes have been a labour of love".

JUST ANOTHER BAND - OFF THE EDGE

New album due in March.

Peter Hanmer writes:
The new album is well under way and will probably contain three instrumental tracks and eight or nine vocal tracks.

The new album is slightly different in the sense that the songs have been written for Judy specifically to sing.

It also features a song that was written by Garth, Peter and Tony in Boss back in 1981 called 'Cheating'. Peter and Marion Brown have re-written the lyrics for the song.

Marion, a friend of the band, collaborated on a few other songs as well with regard to the lyrics.

Visit their new look website at:
http://listen.to/offtheedge

This is a fan site with major input from the band members, especially the graphic designs from guitarist, Peter Hanmer.

Little Sister News:

The Little Sister website has been updated with various new and
interesting sections:

A chat room... works a bit slow, but we had to sacrifice speed for privacy...

A voting booth where you can vote for your favourite song.

New, improved, full length MP3 files of your favourite tracks... not quite CD quality, but if you want CD quality, buy the CDs :)

New pics in the Gallery... send yours in...

And some new poetry in the Fan Stuff section... we would love to have lots more contributions.

So plenty to enjoy at the Little Sister website and you might even catch
Debbi and/or Jenni in the Little Sister Lounge chatroom...

If you are not into chatting, then just leave a message on the Talk To Us message board... Debbi and Jenni visit that board often...

AWARDS
--------

In Issue 2000 we wrote:

Torchbearer of the Year:
David "Groucho" Marks - the one-person SA Music TRC. David continues to fight for all those SA musicians whose careers were wrecked by the Apartheid goons. Also championed 'Live' music over its less-purist 'Recorded' versions. More often then not he had a tendancy to overstate his case by the odd two thousand words (Far too much info, Dave!). But his commitment to the improvement of many aspects of SA music cannot be questioned.

And here is Dave's reply (reprinted with his kind permission):

"Groucho" Marks - I Love It! Although I'm a Chaplin/ Dylan follower in Africa, I hate taking myself so seriously & overstating my case/ cause, my grouches, like the music I love, are not as serious as they sound.

My new years resolution is that I'm going to try - as far as is possible - not fly anymore flags other than the one I need to keep my mouth shut!

Wishing you & your rock readers well for 2000.

SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS

In November 1999, Springbok Nude Girls traveled to Hamburg, Germany on the first promotional trip a South African band has ever undergone through Sony Music.

The purpose of the trip was to launch the release of their album 'Surpass the powers' in Germany (currently the 3rd biggest music buying market in the world).

The band underwent a 2 day press interview schedule and finished off the German trip playing with U.S. alternative rock band & Epic Germany stable mate Sevendust, (who then began their support tour with Skunk Anansie through Europe) at an event promoted by Epic Records launching both the Nude Girls and Sevendust to German and other European media.

In December 1999 the German Issue of Rolling Stone Magazine placed 'Shot'(the bands current South African single) on a value added CD compilation that was given away with the magazine (Rolling Stone sell 125 000 issues in Germany each month).

'Surpass the powers' was released on Epic Records in 7 territories in Europe namely; Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Hungary and The Czech Republic on November 29 1999.

We are still awaiting confirmation from some of Sony Music's other subsidiary labels on possible releases for 'Surpass the powers' in the UK, Holland and France in early 2000.

Having rested over the 1999 December period, Springbok Nude Girls are planning an extensive South African gig schedule over February and March 2000, before concentrating on European promotion, beginning at :

The Jam in Cape Town on Saturday 22 January.

BLUES AND MORE IN KALK BAY THIS SUNDAY

Harbourside Café, which has been making a serious effort to promote
local music this season, hosts acclaimed blues outfit The Infidels
this Sunday January 23 from 5.30 PM. Couvert charge is R10.

For further Info:

Tel/fax: 021-788-2311 (band) or 021-788-2943 (venue)
Cell: 082-602-4330

Ted Baumann, guitarist and vocalist for the project, explains the
nature of the 'band':

"Over the years I've been involved in a number of blues/R&B bands,
including the Groove Kings, Lonesharks, and more recently The
Hoodlums. Each was identified with a certain line-up, but for a
residency like this, the personnel changes from week-to-week since
most of 'the blues pool' of Cape Town musos have other commitments.
So I decided to resurrect The Infidels, my first band in Cape Town,
which played in similar circumstances, with players changing from
week to week. I called it 'The Infidels' because the old
Smokehouse was wary of letting us play, since we didn't play strict
old-fashioned blues. When we did, we wowed 'em.

"Interestingly, The Infidels was the first place YoYo Buys and Paul
Tizzard of The Usual first played together. Yoyo is playing bass
for us for a few weeks at the moment, and Paul has guested with us
regularly, so it's appropriate to use the Infidel identity again."

Besides Yoyo Buys on bass, this week's line-up includes Gary
Verster of Woodshed on drums and Pete Stanford on guitar and
vocals.

RONNIE DOMP AT THE BARLEYCORN

Monday night, 27th December, was amazing! There were about 150 people at the club
with a great evening ended by Ronnie Domp and his Swing the Kangaroo Band
(which used to be called Swing the Cat until he went to Australia).
It was great to have all the guys jamming with Ronnie: Alan Bingham on
drums, Virgil Ellis playing amazing guitar sounds, Rob Stemmett and his great
bass, and Willem van der Merwe jumping up and down as usual in his
multi-coloured tights with a million and one things to blow, hit or just
rattle! Ended after midnight with hardly a soul wanting to go home!

PLETHORA

Rock is alive and well and living in, er... Paarl. The Whammy Bar in Milnerton, Cape Town was host to Paarl Rockers Plethora recently. Plethora (cool rock name, hey?) thundered along with their own brand of metal punk. They played an evening of original numbers inspired by rock bands through the ages. I heard various influences like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Metallica and Bon Jovi stamped with Plethora's own style.

Plethora have a blind drummer whose name I didn't catch, but some of the time I just sat and watched him enthralled by his sense of rock rhythm. I'd love to know more about this 4-piece band and find out where else they are playing.

THE JAM SESSIONS/MUSICIANS` NIGHT
19th January 2000
'keeping music live'

This was the second jam/meeting held and was another success. The dream is
becoming a reality!

Our membership is growing, we had 9 members sign up last week, this week
another 10 have joined. 19 and growing.
Thankfully we had a drumset on stage this week and the sequenced backing
took a rest, which for the muso's who are used to playing along with
sequenced backing... well.... found it interesting. A big thank you to Alan
Bingham. Excellent drumming !!

Here is the list of who took a spot on the stage.
Paul Cilliers-guitar
Alan Bingham-drums
William Ward-guitar
Steve Murdoch-guitar/vocals
Erik Greyvenstein-Drums.....Very Good!!
Tony Dee-guitar/vocals
Jeff Findleyson-bass
Danny Nunes-vocals/bass
and AGAIN... yours truly.-guitar/vocals
a big thank you goes to Eddy Moore, who made his PA available for the
evening. The extra in-puts were surely needed...

The purpose of these jam sessions is to allow musicians, at what ever level
of skills, to have the opportunity to play their instruments with others. It
is not a free-for-all but is controlled by the members themselves... and it
works!! Most of the songs got off to a ropey start, but once everybody got
into the groove, the songs flowed.

Because of the large support from non-musicians, we have agreed to extend
membership to them as well. Becoming a solid support group for LIVE MUSIC...(maybe some venues will wake up to this, and they'll start supporting too!)

We are very proud to have built a close association with the BARLEYCORN
MUSIC CLUB it was nice to see some of their members attend last night, as some of our
members attended the Barleycorn on Monday. There is a need for more of these
Jam Sessions to start up in other suburbs, cities. If you are interested in starting your own club, it does not cost alot, just that it takes up a bit of your time. Please contact Lesley or myself should you need any assistance.

SEARCHING

I have been searching the web for 2 CD's. Falling Mirror (Johnny Calls the Chemist) and éVoid (including track Shadows). I have had both MC's when I was still living in Namibia but in 1991 I moved to Germany and the MC's got lost. I would like to have both albums again, but I have given up finding them in the web. Do you know a possibility to get hold of them?
Thanks, best regards
