NEW RELEASES
---------------

JACK HAMMER

Jack Hammer's 'Anthology' CD released in January 2000 would get a high rating out of 10 just for the 4 new recordings that appear on it. These 4 new tracks were recorded in 1999 and are great acoustic rock songs in the Tom Petty and Neil Young style.

The fact that this CD is also includes tracks from all 4 previous Jack Hammer albums lifts it to a perfect 10. The first 2 albums 'Jack Of All Trades' and 'The Judas Chapter' have not yet been released on CD, but now classic tracks like 'January's Son' and 'Good Friend Of Mine' are available on CD.

Jack Hammer also re-recorded the ballad for Andre Stander, Fort Lauderdale, and this new 1999 version opens the album. This CD moves from aching songs of lost love ('Keep On Missing You') to stunning gut-wrenching rock ('Sarajevo'). The ZZ Top-styled 'Street Of Love' sets a blistering pace, but is then contrasted by the beautiful 'April' sung by Jonathan Martin.

Truly an album of Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves...

Jack Hammer is led by the multi-talented Piet Botha who sings and plays guitars, keyboards, bass and harmonica. Piet also has a separate solo career in the Afrikaans folk-rock arena, along with the likes of Koos Kombuis and Valiant Swart.

One of the strongest abilities of the band has always been harmonies, and with the addition of Tony and William, this coming gig should be something not to miss. There will be a lot of swapping around of instruments between the band members which shows our versatility.

The evening line up will include some of NIGHT SHUTTLE's originals, including Lesley's song entitled 'Cape Town's the place to be'. (written for Cape Towns' muso's).

FRUIT FLY NAVIGATORS IN CONCERT

Last Friday at Jamies saw the return to the stage (after a brief break) of Fruit Fly Navigators. This was the first time I had seen this band and was rather excited at the prospect. I was not disappointed! It was a truly excellent evening's entertainment.

My first impression was that the small band room at Jamies was definitely not an appropriate place for this band's performance. It filled up rapidly and was packed full of sweaty, eager fans. There were even people who couldn't get inside the small room and who had to listen from the doorway. The main stage would have been a far better venue for this obviously popular band.

Fruit Fly Navigators' music is difficult to describe or compare to another band. There is a funky, groove element which runs through the music and a heavy undertone throughout. There is a lot of emphasis on bass and the "bongo" drums add an interesting sound to the mix. The music flows easily and is therefore extremely "danceable". I saw a few attempts at dancing abruptly ended due to an elbow in the eye or ribs, but had it not been so cramped, the crowd would have definitely been dancing wildly!

One thing which literally jumps out at you is the sheer energy and enjoyment which is flung at you from the stage. The vocalist leaps around in a frenzy and if he's not singing with all his might or pounding out a catchy beat on the bongos, he is twisting and writhing to the music which surrounds him. From every band member there oozes a sense of sheer delight. They appear to love what they do and it is obvious that they are enjoying every minute on stage. This kind of enthusiasm is always great to see.

The overall impression that I got from Fruit Fly Navigators is that they are serious about what they do yet have a passion for it as well. They came across as being highly professional and organised and promoted themselves very well - having CD's on sale at the door and mentioning it to the audience repeatedly. Also, the CD's were reasonably priced at R30 (which does encourage people to buy them) although, I wondered if they were not selling themselves a bit short.

All in all, this band was great to watch and they are definitely going places. I am actually surprised that they are not already up there with Sugardrive and Wonderboom, with regards to radio play and exposure. (probably due to being a Durbs band!) They have definite commercial appeal and entertainment value and I expect them to go very far. (right to the top, in fact!)I hope to see them perform again really soon.

SQUEAL

Premier South African Rock band SQUEAL, will be back in studio in late March to record new material for a 6-track EP release.

SQUEAL, under new management, will be re-profiling both the SQUEAL brand, and the music that has made the band one of the top rock bands to emanate out of South Africa.

The new EP follows the release of their last album - 'Civilised' closely, and is designed to re-inforce the album, whilst bringing South African audiences new material supporting the bands re-emphasis on development and re-establishment in the year 2000.

SQUEAL recently saw recognition of their status as one of South Africa's top rock bands for the SAMA Nomination in the Best Rock category.

A CALL FOR AFRICAN MUSIC IN CANADA

I would like to establish with you a mutually beneficial relationship that will provide publicity for your company and its artists as well as promote African music in Canada.

On CKUW 95.9 FM I host three weekly shows that bring a wide array of African music to Canadians. CKUW 95.9 FM is a listener-driven community radio station, broadcasting from The University of Winnipeg. Its innovative programming reaches nearly one million people in the City of Winnipeg and surrounding area. CKUW 95.9FM has the greatest
range of programs in the province of Manitoba, from spoken word to worldbeat, from accapella to kwaito and from kwasa-kwasa to
township jive.

On CKUW 95.9 FM I host three shows: The African Summit, Fluid Physics, and Forward March.

The African Summit broadcasts on Saturdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and showcases various African music from Cape to Cairo. I also conduct interviews with Africans living in Canada. My aim is to raise awareness about Africa and its contemporary socio-economic issues among Canadians.

Forward March transmits on Sundays from 6:30-8:00 pm. It features black music specifically from the Americas - from Cuban jazz to Dancehall reggae.

Fluid Physics broadcasts Fridays mornings from 5:00- 8:00 a.m., encompassing a broad array of music from around the world, but focusses on African and Black music such as soul, gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues.

The times listed above are for the Central Standard Time Zone.

On all my shows I provide information about the history of African music and how it has influenced other cultures over the years. Additionally, I advance awareness about issues affecting African people both within Africa and abroad. As well I read news bulletins and advertisements, make community announcements, and provide weather reports.

The resources at The University of Winnipeg are fairly limited and all shows are done on a volunteer basis. Therefore, I ask to you to supply me with play copies of any genre of music and artists you promote. In turn I would advertise the artists and your company on all my shows free-of-charge. Canada is a very affluent society and Canadians have money which they love to spend on entertainment.

Canadians also embrace multiculturalism and love ethnic arts. For many Canadians, that which is new, different or exotic is of great value. To illustrate the point, my friends at university love to sip South
African wine, nibble on sushi, do the limbo and dance the macarena. Every summer there are so many cultural festivals which attract many foreign musicians from all corners of the globe to the province of
Manitoba. For those reasons I believe Canada is a good market for African music.

As an African living in Canada, I enjoy promoting our music here. For example, there are two accapella groups from Zimbabwe - Black Umfolosi and Sunduza who came to Canada two years ago and performed at annual cultural festivals. Afterwards, I promoted their work and today they are a household name. This promotion has also had a positive impact on both the economy and tourism industry of Zimbabwe. Since then, many Canadian have actually travelled to that country during their holidays.
I am sure this promotion will yield the same results for other African nations.

You can sample my shows by visiting our website at http://www.freenet.mb.ca/ckuw.
The station's e-mail address is mailto:ckuw@uwinnipeg.ca.
My personal e-mail address is mndlovu@visto.com.

Please remember to add me on your mailing list so that I receive every album that you produce and the related promotional material. I would appreciate a copy of your catalogue. My mailing address is:

PJ POWERS
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/pjpowers/

The reason why I'm interested in PJ Powers, is that in 1989 I heard her in Maputo. As far as I remembered, it must have been during the concert that Eric Clapton held at the football stadium. At the time, I was engaged by NORAD (Norwegian Aid Department) to Electricidade de Mocambique.

I thought that she was very good, and wanted to hear more. One of the Norwgians had taped two of her records ('Best of..' and 'Living in Africa'), and I got a copy of those on tapes. From time to time I still listen to her, and I still find her very good. Especially her version of 'Help' and 'You're so good to me'. To me, she ranks alongside Janis Joplin, both in voice and performance.

I might add, that the other tracks brings on a the message of a future for the African poeple that I sincerely hope will be fullfilled.

Besides, all the tracks bring back memories of the the time I spent in African (three years), both of the people and the nature.

Are there any other groups that combine the African rhythm, song tradition and European rock in the same way? I must confess that when I heard the local people sing, I was very impressed.

SHAWN PHILLIPS

I've seen both of these guys (Shawn Phillips and Van Wilks) perform at the Kerrville Folk Festival. Van is a Texan, in fact, and out in the garage I have one of his albums. Shawn puts on a good show, Valerie (my wife) has been a fan of his for a long time. I have a couple of Shawn's albums on vinyl -- in fact, and duplicates of the one that shows his long fan of hair -- before the motorboat accident tore it out (not that you can tell now). Van rocks a bit more, or did when I saw him -- maybe he and Shawn will do an acoustic set.

The Kerrville Folk Festival happens about 60 miles from here (one hundred km?), still in the Hill Country, which region I live in, and the forested hillsides are a beautiful setting for outdoor music. Are "koppies" kopjes?

The theme song at the KFF everyone gathers onstage for is "Heal In the
Wisdom", written by Bobby Bridger, a folksinger married to one of my wife's best friends.

Whenever I visit SA, I'll have to make sure I schedule make it to make it to some outdoor festivals.

DAVID'S CONFESSION

I did a search on David's Confession and found a review on their album on your site by Neil Daya. As a comment.. Yes, the Botha's are brothers and I have made a unofficial site for them at http://davidsconfession.freeservers.com

I fool around with HTML and it's nothing fancy, but there are a few pics from a live concert in Cape Town last year. They know about the site and it has their approval. If only I could get them to keep me updated on their gig schedule..

JACK HAMMER

I received Jack Hammer's Anthology yesterday -- thank you very much.
I've got it cranked on my computer's CD player right now. Great stuff, perfect guitar rock. More ballads than I expected, but the soaring guitar never fails to sound wonderful. While there are no tunes I don't enjoy, a few do stand out at this point (list likely to change as I listen more): 'January's Son', 'Sarajevo', 'The Fisherman', 'Codename Ruby', 'April', 'Liberty', 'Welcome to Azania', and 'Gypsy Wind'. This is my kind of rock: guitar-dominated, pure and cool music.

The whole CD is a pleasure to listen to: Piet's guitar has all the right sounds, the lyrics are thoughtful, and the drum and bass move the tracks along nicely.

In 'Gypsy Wind' the "MoPac" railroad referred to is the Missouri-Pacific Line, and in Austin the highway that parallels it is called MoPac.

THE FOUR YANKS

My enquiry about 'The Vikings' brought some very helpful answers. May I now ask if any reader with a long memory (the 50s) can let me have any info of a vocal group called 'The Four Yanks'? Dudu Pukwana played piano for them in the late 50s, and I have two tracks only of them and no personnel.
