STUDY DAVID
A Jhb based 4 piece rock/pop band have released an independent debut 4 track EP titled 'Mono'. The 4th track 'Superstitious' has been receiving limited airplay. Study David will be gigging around SA, look out for them.
NEW CLOUDED YELLOW, a brand new project from the Study David lead singer/guitarist Gareth T Irons. Played there debut gig in March 2000 at the Big Easy Jhb. Went down well and will be playing more gigs including Splashy Fen festival April 2000. Will be in RST studios doing a demo EP. Look out for it.

IN THE SAMATIME

It's time again for the SA music industry to honour its own, and on March 30 the FNB SAMA Awards 2000 ceremony will be held at the Sun City Superbowl. An edited version of this ceremony will then be broadcast on SABC1 on April 1. This will be the sixth time that the top South African musicians, songwriters, engineers, producers, video directors and CD store assistants (just kidding about that last one) will be heartily slapped on the back for their contributions. Practically every musical genre will be represented in the 45 categories. Hugh Masekela is sure to find himself at the podium at least once after receiving four nominations for his 'Sixty' album, while Gloria Bosman's debut album, 'Tranquility', is up for three awards. Among the 190 nominees are many of SA's favourite musical offspring including Just Jinger, Springbok Nude Girls, Busi Mhlongo, Lucky Dube, TKZee Family, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Fetish, Jimmy Dludlu, and Boom Shaka.
As with all of these awards things, there is bound to be a ton of criticism about some of the nominees in some of the categories, but generally they all seem reasonably fair. A lot of interest is in the 'Best Rock Album' category where Sugardrive ('When I Died I Was Elvis'), Squeal ('Civilised'), Fetish ('So Many Prophets'), Just Jinger ('Here's To You'), and the Springbok Nude Girls ('Surpass The Powers'), compete for a very closely contested award. But we will remain neutral and will applaud all and every winner and cringe at all those acceptance speeches. But we do have one particular favourite, in the 'Best Instrumental' category, where we feel Nibs van der Spuy is a shoo-in with his 'Lines On My Face' album (although he does sing on the title track). Go Nibs! And good luck to all the nominees.

UNION

Fresh new sounds from the Mother City
Union are a new band from Cape Town who are determined to do things properly and make a name for themselves in the music business.
They reckon they have been around for about two years, "finding themselves", and have to date played only two gigs. Yet Union already have a five-track demo CD out which is stunning. Entitled 'This Way Up', it's a gem of a recording.
The CD was recorded in Hot House studios in Cape Town, a small home studio affair owned by a friend of the band. However, like B# Studios in Benoni, the sound that they have achieved here belies the size of the operation.
The five tracks may not be the best produced recordings in the world, but they are clear and structured and allow the listener to get into the songs without getting lost in bad recording or annoying over-production.
Stylistically, the band is not afraid to pillage from all sorts of sources. The result is an up front energy that cannot be pinned down. The infectiously poppy 'Silly Sounding Sweetness' which closes the EP, provides a great counterpoint to the more hard sounding 'Union' and Speed'.
A welcome change too, is the fact that the singer, Peter can actually sing. The orchestration is not hackneyed, yet steers clear of over elaboration. All in all, Union sound a lot different to the average new band. They are working hard at their craft without giving the impression of trying too hard. And most importantly, they don't sound like ten other bands also struggling to break into the scene.
With freshness and originality on their side, it won't be long before you get to hear a lot more from Union. If you want to catch them live, their very good website is regularly updated, and always has gig info on it. You can visit them on the following address:

OFF THE EDGE - THE FIRST ALBUM (1983)

It doesn't happen too often but once in a while I make a prediction that comes true. When I was a kid in the late 60s I was into rock, of course, and thought the scene was incredibly creative -- which it was. Yet, I used to tell friends that while some of the best rock music was being made in the 60s, when these musicians matured and improved rock music would be even better.
David Marks recently wrote in the Digest about musicians improving, saying something to the effect: "More mature (I didn't say older) musicians". He echoed my thoughts in that as musicians improve and mature (I didn't say older, either), their work will improve, and we, the listeners benefit.
The first Off the Edge CD, and the later work of Peter Hanmer, Tony Groenwald, and others, proves this fact of maturity equalling better music. 'Off the Edge' by Off the Edge is a fine CD, 'On the Run' by Off the Edge is a better album, at least in the sense that it feels unified, and I'm hoping that the soon-to-be-released Off The Edge album {see below - ed} will be even better yet.
Here are some brief thoughts on the songs of Off the Edge's first album:
'Evil In Her Eyes' -- nice power chord open, a rockin' and rollickin'
tune.
'Liven Up the Night' -- The guitar playing continues to be inventive, the drums and keyboards rock-steady.
'The Critics' -- Take that! Determination, a vow in a song about keeping keeping on. Again, there's that wonderful guitar playing.
'Just Another Band' -- The obligatory slow song per set. Melancholy,
almost wistful vocals, but a long build to power, then resumption of the easy-going beat and calm vocals.
'One Lover' -- Calm interludes punctuated by energetic and enthusiastic
playing and singing to get across the sincerity and urgency of the wish for one lover.
'Off the Edge' -- back to rock, is this the break song in a live set?
Mid to uptempo, good rock song with a guitar break that fits and flows with the song. Ends with a nice and lengthy keyboard and guitar interplay.
'Out of Luck, Out of Love' -- Funky, strutting, and proud tune in
contrast to the lyrics. The short guitar break makes me think, "Hey, is this guy good or what?"
'I Can't Carry On' -- Straight ahead rock tune. The instruments border
on wild but are kept under control -- good balance.
'Fooling Around' -- The first times I listened to this CD, whenever this tune came on I reached for the case to see the title. Brian has mentioned this tune, too, and I agree that it is a stand-out rock instrumental that skips along wonderfully; entirely pleasant.
'Shady Lady' -- After the lengthy intro, the beat picks up and the song
gets going. Nice song, but sounding perhaps more of the day it was written than others of this CD.
'Take It On the Run' -- This is one of the four songs re-recorded for the 'On the Run' CD, and one of my favorite songs of either CD. A nice thoughtful coda, and one which suggests the flow, unity, and style that will emerge in the more mature work of 'On the Run'.
To tie this all in with my thought that as musicians mature their music improves, the first CD is eleven songs that range from nice and pleasant to wonderful rock songs, while the second CD has a stylistic unity that makes the entire CD one fine work, without being repetitious. While the first CD is one I'm very glad to own, the second is one of my favorite rock works.
The third album? I'm waiting for it eagerly, because I am sure the progression from Off the Edge's first album through the third is going to be ever upward and onward.

JUST ANOTHER BAND - OFF THE EDGE
Now in the final stages of production, this new album from Off The Edge is due out very shortly.
The Digest managed to acquire a work-in-progress demo CD-R of this new album... and its stunning.
Fans of Off The Edge's previous work will love this new CD which develops and grows the themes from 'On The Run'. Fans of good melodic rock, strong female vocals and powerful and epic guitar work are in for a treat. Peter Hanmer has taken advice from his fans and friends and stretched some tracks way beyond the 4 minute cut-off for radio-play. This man's guitaring is superb and deserves to be heard.

Terrific African artists like Miriam Makeba, Sally Nyolo and Oumou Sangare, are regulars on his show. I'm still hoping to put together an international show for KRVM - just have to find the right time slot for me!

GOING FOR A SONG
Until 5 years ago - I played guitar and sung in a number
of bands - but since then I've turned my music interests to
the computer. I now compose - arrange - sequence and record on - CD -
my music. I like just about any type of music - but because I
find 'Country' or 'Pop' music' easy to write - I now have
quite a collection. I get to this stage - no problem - unfortunately I do not know the 'road' there on! Which brings me the to point where I think I need to contact country/pop singers and see if they're interested. The stuff's just lying here collecting dust!

I used to have a copy but lent it to someone who unfortunately did not feel the same way about music as I do and hence left the album in the sun. I thus would appreciate it if you could push me in the direction to locate this LP. I have tried various music shops as well as flea market stores, with no success as of yet. I have located the "Shattered" album but not the album I am looking for. Any assistance in this regard would be deeply appreciated.

JOHNNY CALLS THE CHEMIST

For most Mirror fans "Johnny..." was the album that opened their eyes and
ears to the arcane world of the Mirror... that was simply because the title
track had so much airplay (and still does to this day), it was their "hit" so
to speak (went to No.1 on 5FM that year and was also included in their Top
100 hits some years back). It led many to go back and discover the beauty of
the first three albums although not in droves!
But 'Johnny' was also their most intense, complex, scary and downright schizo
album, based on a real life girl in a chemist that Neilen was obsessed with.
Rumour has it that it's her on the cover and in the insane video of the title track.
It was also a concept album in the loosest sense of the word. You will note that there is yet another version of the classic 'Makin' out with granny' on the album, this time an extended sonic acid drenched guitar workout. Besides the title track the only other track that was culled from the album was "As sly as the fox" b/w 'Encounter in a takeaway
shop" which was released by WEA France as a 12" 45rpm single in 1987 (Catalogue no.258426-0).

Despite the hit status of the single (with its Dylanesque vocal delivery and
awe-inspiring guitar work) the album did not sell in big numbers (although
its fair to say that it outsold the previous three combined ... no big thing
I may add hahaha). Despite their inherent fear of interviewers the band
really committed themselves to working hard to promote the album and
eventually even appeared in their first live performance at the Brass Bell
in Kalk Bay (couldn't miss that one!). Sadly they became disillusioned with
the whole industry and melted back into the shadows until the mid 90's and
Hammerhead Hotel.......

Alf worked on the first OOM album, 'Beats And Peaces' with Ian Osrin and Jon Ackerman from Digital Cupboard. The OOM album has become something of a deserving cult item as it's bloody marvellous and great fun, a sort of SA kwaito, rap, soul, pop hybrid.

TOP OF THE CHARTS
Do you know where I am able to get the SA Top 20's and 30's charts. I have been a Top 20/30 fanatic since I was 8. I do have the weekly listings from 1969 to 1979, 1980 to 1983. I am missing the rest and have tried several places to get them. SABC wants to charge R45.00 a copy for each week.... this of course would leave my family destitute, I would love it but they (& I) would starve... not condusive to procreation I'd say.
