ONE WORLD

éVOID

The long awaited re-release of éVoid has now finally hit the street - and it was worth the wait. Extra songs, great informative (thick) booklet and a re-mastering. Well done Benjy - we're waiting for the rest. Special offer is this: One World has acquired a bunch of the now deleted single by Bright Blue - 'Open Your Eyes'. We will give away free to each purchaser of the éVoid album a copy of this classic collectors item. If there are any left over, we'll do the same with the Via Afrika which should be out next week. Sooooo - place your order now on the éVoid and score with One World!

HENRY ATE

The new Karma has arrived in the guise of a new Henry Ate album! We've waited long enough and here it is! Enjoy!

JUST JINGER

Without much fanfare, Just Jinger released their latest full album called 'Strange World'. And a strange world it is - SA's biggest selling pop band's new album arrived without so much a thimbleful of hype... strong melodies and acoustic guitars to the front, it sounds on first listening (didn't have time before loading it onto the site for more!) like a quieter Just Jinger, but one that is focussed... enjoy!

COLESKE

After one of the longest waits I can remember between a hit first album and the follow up - the new Coleske is here. It won't disappoint fans of the first album with smooth love songs and silky pop around every corner...

KHUMBALA

In the spirit of cross genre that is sweeping South Africa, come Khumbula. They describe their music as a 'combination of Maskanda and Fusion, with a North African twist'. It sounds fresh and strong. See what you think!

BEESKRAAL

Beeskraal, who have been turning heads at alternative jolle, have finally released their eponymous 'Beeskraal' EP. A long time coming it shows a somewhat rougher edge to the alternative Afrikaans market. These guys are having a jol.

MATHYS ROETS

Our very own balladeer of note, Mathys Roets, has come up with a mellow, pleasant live recording leaning heavily on standards by artists such as Leonard Cohen and Koos Du Plessis. With his big voice wrapped around the standards, the audience is lulled into his spell of nostalgia and seems to love it...

JAZZ

Have A Jazzy Time...
...with three brand new Jazz releases this week from Robbie Jansen, Sipho Gumede and Marcus Wyatt. Ace Bass Gumede returns with a long awaited new album, and eclectic saxophonist Robbie Jansen, with his band, The Sons Of Table Mountain, brew up a heady mix of jazz, hip-hop and other sounds of Cape Town on the new album 'The Cape Doctor'. Marcus Wyatt has put together an album which sounds a bit like The Charlie Haden Band (to me at least!) A relaxing, fun and accomplished album, it's a great debut.

MANGO GROOVE

For all you many millions of Mango Groove fans out there - you now have the choice of a new Greatest Hits package with a slightly different track listing to the 'Dance Sum More' compilation. It's also a little cheaper...

KOOS KOMBUIS

The new Koos Kombuis - Greatest Hits comes as a surprise to us (and Koos, as it turns out) as it's now the third in a row. It has to do with rights and things... We spoke to Koos about it and he was philosophical... after all the songs are good... but he had nothing to do with the choice of songs or even to release it or not... similar things have happened to most major artists who change record companies - I can think of Joe Jackson and Bob Dylan for example, who have had Greatest Hits packages without their involvement... but these are not kak songs though... strange...

BRENDA FASSIE

Hey! Brenda's back hoping to make it a hat trick with the third Chicco collaboration in a row. The hugely successful 'Memeza' format is again given an airing and 'Thola Amadlozi' is already a hit.

AMARYONI

There have been queries on the One World website from as far as a year back about a release by Amaryoni - now it's here! They are essentially an acapella band - I suppose a comparision with The Flying Pickets would be to minimise the fact that they are really African, really tuneful and powerful. Very different to Mambaso, they take influences from the 50's doo wop bands, a dash of traditional singing and their own concoction and stir it into a wonderful mix.

CHRISTMAS IN CAPE TOWN .... A Special Place To Be!

This is destined to become South Africa's most successful Christmas album... ever!

We look forward to national support in breaking a truly 'South African

collection of Christmas songs - plus one brand-new, specially-composed
smash-to-be...

"Christmas In Cape Town" ... a special place to be!

The release date of "CHRISTMAS IN CAPE TOWN has been set for the 10th
Nov 2000 thru' SELECT (SMD) - NAC CD 15 (CD) - NAC MC 15 (Cassette).

There will be multiple live appearances by the NAC CHILDREN'S
CHOIR, performing the repertoire of "CHRISTMAS IN CAPE TOWN" at the newly launched CANAL WALK at CENTURY CITY and the V&A WATERFRONT in Cape Town during December. (Details to be released shortly).

-------------------------------------

CHRISTMAS IN CAPE TOWN - NAC CHILDRENS' CHOIR

Last year I did some consulting on the marketing of STOUT HEARTED MEN by 10,000 male voices from the choirs of the New Apostolic Church. The record went to No 1 on the national MUSICA charts, somewhat mirroring what was happening with Sir Cliff Richard in the UK with his reworking of 'The Lord's Prayer' to the tune of 'Auld Lang Syne' - EMI, his record company of over 40 years dumped him and refused to release it - so he went to a tiny independent company. Then radio refused to play it, so Sir Cliff went over their heads, straight to the heart of the nation, via TOP OF THE POPS TV show, and the rest is history - 4 weeks straight at No 1. (Hello EMI?).

All the major SA companies turned STOUT HEARTED MEN down, so the NAC took it to a small independent in CT, Nebula Bos Records, and soon the record was No1.

This year it was decided by the NAC to turn the attention of their musical efforts to their children's choirs, and Christmas repertoire in particular. I suggested that someone within the community of the church try and write a 'fresh' Christmas song, for, as beautiful as it was, the standard Christmas repertoire was hugely overworked - and the Boney M Christmas album was wearing seriously thin!

Not expecting much from non-professional song-writers, I was astounded when I received a demo tape of a song called "Christmas In Cape Town". I immediately heard HIT! And not just for the NAC Children's Choir in 2000, but for many artistes, around the world, in years to come. I heard the song taking it's place alongside "White Christmas" and "Joy To The World", and being recorded by the likes of ... Sir Cliff Richard! The possibilities were endless ...

The Children's Choirs completed the repertoire recording, which ranged from "Jingle Bells" to "O Tannenbaum", plus, of course, "Christmas In Cape Town".

A unique sleeve was shot on Melkbosstrand, with the children dressed as
pixies, fairies and goblins, complete with a giant Christmas tree, and
Table Mountain in the background. At the same time a music video was shot of "Christmas In Cape Town".

I believe this will become a unique Christmas collection for South African music collectors, and negotiations have already begun for an international release. As for the fabulous title track, there are already cover versions in the wings, and of course, there is always the possibilities of ... Sir Cliff!

But for now, the moment belongs to the NAC Children's Choir and their
unique "CHRISTMAS IN CAPE TOWN" ... A special place to be!

----------------

STRANGE WORLD - JUST JINGER

Ironic title hey Art! You take your band (Mark 2) off to London, find a big house in Hounslow just around the corner from the studios, play some regular gigs and headline the Amabala Festival to much acclaim. You record your 10-track new album, send it out into the world, and then find it released back home in the same week as the new offerings from Springbok Nude Girls, Boo! and Henry Ate (not to mention U2). More like 'Tough World'!

There was some initial talk of a Blur/Oasis-type "struggle" for album supremacy between The Jingers' 'Strange World' and The Nude Girls' 'Relaxzor', surely the two co-leaders in the late-2000 SA rock league, but comparing these two bands or these two new albums is pointless (except in terms of sales), like arguing over who between Andre Vos and Shaun Pollock is the best SA sporting captain. So we'll keep an eye on the charts and sales, both online and offline in SA and overseas, and may the best band make more money.

But from a review perspective, 'Strange World' must be judged in terms of it being possibly the fourth in a very successful sequence of big-selling albums by Just Jinger - following 'All Comes Round', 'Something For Now' and 'Here's To You'. Albums that drew frowns from many for their unpinpointable attractions. Ballads that were generally slow and anguished alternating with fast, loud bits. Practically all of them written by Art Matthews for himself to confidently wrap his gruff 'n honeyed vocals around. Too samey, too slow. Yet those three albums outsold any other SA rock albums for ages and aroused new hopes of a buoyant SA rock industry. So someone out there likes their music....
a lot!

Well, for those dedicated fans out there, I have some great news. 'Strange World' is going to make you very happy, warm and fuzzy. You can take it home, clear away all those Fetish CDs and take ages to get into 'Strange World' s emotional longings, lyrical paths and musical depths. The opening track and impressive first single 'Your Song' does set a deceptively uptempo pace, as nothing else that comes after it, apart from the jaunty 'Out The Way' and the throwaway but sweet hidden track 'Overjoyed', match it for spark, speed or invention.

The album is a good, old-fashioned 44 minutes and 35 seconds, which fits nicely onto one side of a C90 (all you cassette-Napsters) and which these days also indicates some judicious editing from the obligatory "we have 70 minutes, let's use them all" way of thinking. But it still tends to sag in the center from too many uninspiring slowies. 'For All We Know', 'It Never Did', 'The Moment' and 'Go On' seem self-indulgent and are truly for the faithful only.

But if you balance those against the worthy and sincere second single 'I Wish I Could Have Told You', the surprisingly cringe-free, gospel-rocky 'Remember Me', the sweet 'Sleep', and the really lovely title track which closes the album, you once again have another annoyingly enigmatic album from Art Matthews and his merry band - Brent Harris (drums), Denholm Harding (bass), Danie van Rensberg (electric guitar) and Anthony "Anth" Galatis (keyboards).

What can I tell you? 'Strange World' will sell in SA like Pokémon cards (they wish!), 'Your Song' will deservedly rule the SA charts for a while, one of the other tracks may also, and someone important in London may think this is great and pay their rent for a while longer. But for me 'Strange World' doesn't follow up on the promise and new direction of that opening (your) song and some variation from the formula is definitely needed, so it's not so much "Fine Art" as still "Just Plain Jinger"! (6.5) (SS)

DELENTA - JENNY DELENTA

Another TV personality moves into the pop arena, except in Jenny Delenta's case the word "personality" is appropriate as she exhibited total cool during her stint as the roving TV reporter on 'Options', and a solid set of tonsils as a member of the Not The Midnight Mass
a capella outfit. This is her debut album and it was co-written with Craigie Dodds (Egyptian Nursery) who also produced, engineered and arranged these 11 ambient pop gems.

'Delenta' is a trip-pop album that sparkles with fresh electronica touches, an abundance of memorable melodies and sultry, versatile vocals. Initially it sounded a bit twee and a little too similar to Qkumba Zoo's chirpy dance-pop, but repeated spins revealed 'Delenta's' intelligent and evocative core and wealth of potential singles. First single, 'Fall', is already all over the radio and the anthemic 'Higher Ground' is waiting in the wings to take over. 'Sudan' is a reference to Jenny Delenta's land of birth and is performed as a touching dedication to her mother and father.

Other highlights include 'In Rhythm With You', the strange vocal dynamics of 'Streets', 'Drown In You' and the dancey bonus track 'Coming Together'. Jenny Delenta has always exhibited a humour-tinged confidence, a hidden vulnerability and a clear-eyed intelligence. So it's no surprise that 'Delenta' is such an assured and strong debut. Nothing less then we'd expect from someone who would never sing a lyric like "I need your passion like it's going out of fashion". Delentable! (7.5) (SS)

NKALAKATHA - MANDOZA

Kwaito giant Mandoza leaves his Chiskop buddies to release his solo effort which, to date, has topped the SA CD best-sellers charts for almost three months and won him five of the ten Metro FM Music Awards which were dished out recently based on a public vote. So Kwaito is still massive and this collection is currently top of the pile. As such, 'Nkalakatha' is as good an intro to the infectious charms and beats of Kwaito as a newbie can ask for, and it is an essential addition to any decent Kwaito collection, as its amazing sales figures confirm.

At its simplest, Kwaito is essentially two-chord (keyboard-led) jams with monotonously repeated lyrics - not conducive to soft armchair listening. But like its distant hip hop cousin, this is a genre that encourages lyrical diversity and relies on strange musical samplings and ideas to keep it fresh and bounce-worthy. So 'Nkalakatha', both from its sleek sound and mega-popularity, is the current quality Kwaito display item and it will either turn you into a Kwaito devotee or send you running for your Leftfield and Cher CDs.

The title track and first single opens the album and receives a cool 'Dub Mix Version' further on. 'Sikhathi Sewashi' is up next and later also gets both a 'Dub Mix Version' and an 'Instrumental Version'. So these two songs form the core of these ten songs with 'Verstaan' and 'Vukani' moving away from the pure Kwaito feel of the opening tracks into a more R&B direction. Mandoza co-wrote all these tunes with the album's producer, Gabi le Roux. They obviously know what they are doing because 'Nkalakatha' has steadfastly remained in the Kwaito spotlight, a genre notable for allowing its brightest lights only about 8 of their 15 Wharhol minutes due to the fickleness and appetite of its fans. (SS)

THE BRIXTON MOORD AND ROOF ORKES

The Brixton Moord & Roof Orkes plays what is sometimes called 'alternative Afrikaans' music. The band currently has a regular gig at the Abelarde Sanction in Brixton and has played for the first time at the Oppikoppi Easter Festival in August 1999. The members of the band are Steve (Brixton) Savage, on bass, vocals and harmonica; Ockert (Moord) Greef, on drums and brandy; and Andries (Roof) Bezuidenhout, on vocals and guitar. Their first music video and an interview with the band have just appeared on the Afrikaans TV music programme "Geraas". Their songs are all original and address issues such as alcohol, crime, war, and they even have one love song.

Steve Savage is also a member of Sharkbrother, whose new 'TajMahala' album is garnering positive reviews across the country. Savage has assured us that The Brixton Moord & Roof Orkes will have some music available in some format soon so that we can all enjoy this new band's liedjies. (SS)

5.USA FOR SA
---------------

THE VERY BEST OF FOUR JACKS AND A JILL, VOLUME ONE
Teal Records MORCD 521

My South African music roots go way back to 1968, to my hometown of
Cazenovia, New York, when I first heard 'Master Jack'. I was reading a
science fiction novel in the living room when 'Master Jack' floated down out of the sky. Shortly after, I bought the album 'Master Jack', which has been a companion of mine for years.

'The Very Best of Four Jacks and a Jill, Volume One', which includes
all but a few songs from the album 'Master Jack', is about the best happy pop one can find. A number of the Volume One songs were written by David Marks, who is only an excellent, only a superb, songwriter.

Someone whose spirits cannot be buoyed by these lovely, optimistic
songs, and by Glenys Lynne's beautiful voice, is probably so depressed that he is already reaching for his pistol. Their music is not nihilistic, dark stuff -- it is bright, positive, feel-good music with great therapeutic value.

Glenys Lynne knows road tours, and despite her happy, innocent voice,
she can sing songs that reflect mature relationships, as well as sing of social issues. Some of these are 'Mr. Go Softly', 'Mr. Nico', 'Hey Mister', and 'Single Girl'. The song 'Master Jack' has worldly significance, but its lyrics and melody transcend pop song status to become, in my mind, an absolutely timeless classic. Another favorite is 'Sunny Side of Somewhere'.

Being a Yank who scarcely knows any better, I enjoy the black songs
Four Jacks and a Jill perform, and they do cover quite a few. Yet I can
hear that while Glenys Lynne's voice is admirable on these tunes, someone like Miriam Makeba or Margaret Singana is better suited to sing these. Yet, because my first introduction to such songs as 'Pata Pata' and 'The Warrior' was hearing Glenys sing them, for better or worse her's are my standard versions.

Naturally, Four Jacks and a Jill play a number of love songs,
especially ones about first love and romance. Some of these are: 'Universal Feeling', 'I Looked Back', 'Mama Said', and 'Freckle Face'. Glenys's voice conveys the freshness of love as if it is a new, and personal, experience. It is a talented singer who can sincerely convey deep feeling, no matter how many times he or she has sung a particular song.

Some of Four Jacks and a Jill's songs are about joy. They are sung for
the pleasure of singing, and Glenys Lynne's beautiful voice is a pleasure to listen to. Some of these simply happy songs are: 'Born with a Smile On My Face' (a song that could easily be Glenys Lynne's theme song, and a Four Jacks and a Jill show opener -- as the live version on Volume One sounds to be), 'Sing-Along', 'Summer Avenue', and (believe it or not) 'Inky Dinky Spider' -- the last being an infectious tune -- even to the most cynical.

For many years, Clive Harding and Tony Hughes were the backbone of the
band while other musos came and went. Despite the many personnel changes, the style remains consistent through these many tracks, aided by Glenys Lynne's always smiling, always perky singing, and by the fact that the rhythm section and the percussionist remain the same.

The songs on 'The Very Best of Four Jacks and a Jill, Volume One' are
much more elaborately produced than were their album tracks not intended for singles release. I own their South African LP 'Now!' (thanks to "Mad Andy" Harrod) and can compare album tracks with singles. In comparison, the album tracks are almost minimalist in production. The singles, however, as on 'The Very Best of' CDs, have been worked over and contain a greater array of instruments and effects. Actually, the minimalist album tracks are refreshing in that Glenys Lynne is definitely to the fore, and I have a sense of what their live performances sounded like (though the upcoming tour
is going to be a grand production).

Volume One is the stronger of the two 'Very Best of' discs, but Volume
two is indispensable as well (they are only R49.99 each!). To my mind, the weak parts of Volume Two are a few covers of American tunes that I have heard a million-and-one times. But it is to Glenys Lynne's credit that she can make 'Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head' and 'Killing Me Softly with His Song' at least palatable, or listenable.

As a neat close, Volume One has as the final track 'Master Jack' in
German -- a neat variation on a well-known, well-loved, theme.

'The Very Best of Four Jacks and a Jill, Volume One' contains 29 songs,
and combined with Volume Two there are 57 songs on two discs. One would
think so many tunes would satisfy my Four Jacks and a Jill needs, but not so: I need more. That's why I'm looking forward to the promised new release by Four Jacks and a Jill. Cheer up, give Four Jacks and a Jill a spin.

6.CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

THINKING ALOUD - JOHN IRELAND

Opening with the disco classic 'Living inside my Head', John Ireland's
'Thinking Aloud' is a great album moving from pure disco to pure rock to rock ballad and back to disco with ease. Released in 1978, the disco themes fitted in well with the then current international music scene with 'Saturday Night Fever' having been released the previous year.

'Living inside my Head' adapts the tune of 'Greensleeves' and puts it to a disco background. An epic song clocking in at over 6 minutes. Shades of Jean-Michel Jarre show through as SA's master of the keyboard transports you on a space flight with the haunting oboe sound carring the old Henry VIII tune just below the surface of the disco beat.

'Stars' is another disco track, with the lyrics concentrating on star signs of the ladies, something which seemed to be important at that time. This is pure hardcore disco as opposed to 'Living..' which is more flighty and spacey.

'Nicole' and 'Remember June last year' are rock ballads. Both are well
executed. The latter does at times border on becoming quite cheesy, but a strong guitar throughout keeps it from falling into that trap.

The pure rock comes in the form of 'With a bit of Lu-Lu-Luck' and a cover of Cream's classic 'Sunshine of your Love'. The guitar work on both tracks is great stuff and I am sure prompted a few air guitar solos in a few bedrooms of 1970's South Africa. Jethro Butow is responsible for keeping the record rocking. Interestingly the traditional guitar lead of 'Sunshine..' seems to have been substituted with a heavy rock synth sound, while the guitar is left to ably fill in the background. This is all done to the background of a disco beat. Not the greatest cover version I've heard of this classic but it still
rocks.

The album closes with 'Out of my Mind' parts of which seem to have been
inspired by early Kraftwerk material with the funky bass sound coming from the keyboard in the "plink plonk" style of the early electronic pioneers. Fortunately a strong vocal over the top keeps this from becoming an embarrassing imitation.

This is a much stronger album than the later 'John Ireland' which featured 'I Like...'. and for it's time should have contended for chart placing worldwide. It did get a release in Germany (with no references to South Africa other than that it was recorded at Videosound Studios,
Blairgowrie... that must be Blairgowrie in Middlesex <grin>).

Perhaps with the disco sound enjoying a bit of renewed popularity, this would be a good time for a re-release of possibly the best album from South Africa's keyboard wizard.

{Ed: 'Living Inside My Head' is available on the 2CD compilation 'Disco Fever' released in 1999 by Gallo and also on 'Quality Moments - Love Songs Volume 1', released by EMI late last year. Both these CDs feature the full-length album version [6.25], but there was also an edited version released as a single which is not available on CD.

This track, which is based on the 'Greensleeves' melody line and has a whistling keyboard effect similar to the "X-Files" TV theme, would sound great as new Dance remix... wish I knew how...}

"WANDA-RING" AROUND

Well, I took your advice and started looking for 'The Best of South African Pop Volume 1' {The place to find 'Zanzibar' by Wanda Arletti - ed}.

At first, I kind of walked into the likes of Musica, et al and mumbled 'do you have the best of SA Pop' and then the helpful 'young' souls behind the counter said 'what?' (their hearing must be going from listening to stuff other that the Four Jacks and a Jill and Wanda Arletti!). 'You're not REALLY looking for that, are you and anyhow we wouldn't stock THAT here'. So I slunk out the shops, tail between legs and feeling suitably mortified - thinking middle-age isn't so much fun after all!

Then the cell phone rings and there playing over the 'airwaves' is 'Zanzibar'. My sister has overcome the embarrassment (she's older than me!) and found not only 'Volume 1' but went for 2 and 3 as well! Hey, what great CD's. There's some good music and well, needless to say the nostalgia was flowing. So, here's to SA Pop and these great compilation CDs - I'm still whispering but it's getting better!

All the best

FINCH AND HENSON

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the superb album by Brian Finch and Kenny Henson 'Playgrounds In Paradise' (Warner Brothers 1977). Was it ever released in CD format? Myself and a number of old Bananaland connections now residing in UK are desperate? Good money offered (pounds) for a decent copy on CD or vinyl?

REQUEST FROM AUSTRALIA

I have a question concerning an Aussie artist which you may be able to provide some info on. Her name was Tina Lawton. She was a folksinger and had 3 LPs of traditional English/ Irish/ Scottish material released in Australia 1965-1968. She was a blonde and apparently did a lot of TV appearances where her looks were an advantage. Anyway I have been trying to research some Aussie folk artists of the 60s recently
but was not able to find much on her.

Then recently 2 separate people have told me that the reason is that some of her recordings were released in South Africa and sold well enough for her to go over to tour. They both said that whilst she was
on tour the plane she was on crashed into the side of a moutain
and she was killed. It was written up in the Aussie newspapers at the time (late 60s). One person said that they thought it was Mount Kilamanjaro!

Do you know of any records released in SA or of her subsequent demise there in an aircraft crash?

DEMO

I just came back from the UK and recorded a demo and also one of the
songs had the potential to go out as a single. Now I'm back in Cape Town as my visa expired and couldn't finish my song. I want to get signed and am writing this e-mail as I know no one in music industry in SA. How should I approach record labels without getting my demo thrown in the bin without being listened to? Hope you can give me some advice/ info?
