1.1 NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES

1.1.1 CDs:

OTIS WAYGOOD BLUES BAND (re-issue) (Retro Fresh)
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/otiswaygood

Like Uriah Heep and Jethro Tull, there is no actual person in the band called Otis Waygood. But "Blues Band" says their name and flute-, sax- and harmonica-driven blues is what they played. Originating in Zimbabwe (then known as Rhodesia), the band moved to South Africa in November 1969 and released this, their first album in 1970.

Garth Chilvers, co-author of the book "The History Of Contemporary Music Of South Africa" (TOGA, 1994), rates Fever as "one of the finest singles ever to be released in this country". Fever was originally recorded by Little Willie John in 1956 (see Shiloh's Corner below).

This CD re-issue on Benjy Mudie's RetroFresh label includes 3 bonus tracks taken from the 'Ten Light Claps And A Scream' album as well extensive and well-researched sleeve notes by Rian Malan.
(BC 4/5)

NOWHERE LAND - Age Of Innocence (Independent)

If you were wondering what Peter Hanmer from Off The Edge has been up to since the release of Just Another Band early last year, here's the answer. Peter and singer Sherry Lee Jones have teamed up as Age Of Innocence and produced an uplifting and haunting album of acoustic-based pop and rock tunes. Sherry's voice has been compared to Maggie Reilly (remember Mike Oldfield's 'Moonlight Shadow'), and Annie Haslam from Renaissance (of 'Carpet Of The Sun' fame).
(BC 4/5)

HIGH ON BLUES - Various Artists (Rhythm Records)

A compilation of South African blues artists that have played at the High Street Theatre in Bellville, Cape Town, since it opened about a year ago. Afrikaner blues is represented by Valiant Swart and Piet Botha... the music is true to the blues ethic and style, but the words are sung in Afrikaans... moving stuff. The Boulevard Blues Band play some blues classics including covers of Snowy White's 'Change My Life' and Stevie Ray Vaughan's 'Empty Arms'. Delta Blue are brilliant and have 3 songs on this CD including their own composition 'Boogie Chillen' (not the John Lee Hooker song with a similar title). Frosted Orange (Albert Frost and Simon "Agent" Orange with Jacques Shutte on drums) play some jazzy blues driven by Simon's keyboards.
(BC 5/5)

STONED IMMACULATE - The Music Of The Doors (Elektra)

An incredible album of Doors classics performed by Creed, Stone Temple Pilots, Smash Mouth, Days Of The New, The Cult, Aerosmith and others with help from the various Doormen themselves. This album also includes a couple of previously unreleased Doors tracks, 'Under Waterfall' and 'The Cosmic Movie'.

The real highlight of this CD is a duet (the wonders of technology) between the late Jim Morrison (born 8 December 1943, died 3 July 1971) and bluesman John Lee Hooker (born 22 August 1917, still going strong as he proves here) doing 'Roadhouse Blues'. The best version I have ever heard. This track also includes all 3 surviving members of the Doors as well as Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers on bass. The Doors had covered Hooker's 'Crawling King Snake' on the 'LA Woman' album and here he gets to return the favour.
(BC 5/5)

THE TRAIN KEPT A-ROLLIN'... 30 Years Of Rock - Various Artists (SonyMusic)

Actually 33 years of rock, from Bob Dylan's 1965 classic 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' to Bob Dylan's (again, hey?) 'Love Sick' in 1997. Inbetween we have a wide variety of classic rock tracks from the likes of Grammy-grabber Santana to the DownerRock sounds of Rage Against The Machine and Korn (don't these American bands know how good their life is?).

Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and Oasis all make an appearance on this 2CD set. The title track does not appear anywhere on this CD (though other tracks by both The Yardbirds and Aerosmith, who have recorded versions of this song, do appear here) and the cover is rather boring, but don't let that distract you. This CD rocks, man...
(BC 5/5)

FREE WHITE AND AFRICAN - Nick Taylor (Inhuis/Trio)

Nick Taylor goes back to his roots, musically and lyrically, as he remembers the jols and the bops of the 60s in South Africa. A folky, poppy, show-stopping rock and roll CD that will bring a smile to your face and maybe a tear to your eye.
(BC 3/5)

Faith In Love - Coleske (Gallo)

Optimistic well-produced pop from the Coleske brothers with a hint of the Kwela sound that Bright Blue did so well in the early 80s.
The Bright Blue Broers, maybe?
(BC 3/5)

WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE - Deep Purple (remastered) (Deep Purple/EMI)
http://www.rock.co.za/deeppurple

Not their greatest album, no (that honour can be divided between 'Made In Japan', 'Machine Head' and 'In Rock', take your pick), but one that deserves another listen. Originally released in 1973 just before Gillan's departure and recently remastered by bassist Roger Glover this re-issue includes 7 bonus tracks including a 1999 remix of 'Woman From Tokyo' which is still a great song.
(BC 4/5)

IN THE FLESH (live) - Roger Waters (Columbia/SonyMusic)
http://www.rock.co.za/pinkfloyd

A double CD of Roger Waters playing his Pink Floyd back catalogue live with some solo album tracks thrown in. Wonderful versions of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (Floyd's tribute to the departed Syd Barrett - "SoYcD"), 'Dogs' (from Animals, originally known as 'Gotta Be Crazy') and many other tracks from 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', 'Wish You Were Here', 'Animals', 'The Wall' and 'The Final Cut'.

A real surprise was 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of Sun' which was a tripping track off the 'Saucerful of Secrets' album in 1968. This song is given a new lease of life here, with a sax solo and a stunning freak-out section.

The new track 'One Small Candle' is a classic Waters song and closes off the album on a very high (and surprisingly optimistic) note.
(BC 5/5)

ANTHEMS - Deep Purple (EMI Gold)
http://www.rock.co.za/deeppurple

A strange compilation from EMI in Europe. It is titled 'Anthems', but does not include THE rock riff anthem of all-time 'Smoke On The Water' (misheard once as "Slow Walk Walter, The Fire Engine Guy"!), nor the album track 'Anthem' which is from the 'Book Of Taliesyn' album. However it does manage to get a song or 2 off each of the classic albums released between 1970 and 1973 including the rare-ish live version of 'Black Night' recorded during the 'Made In Japan' concerts, but which was not on the original album. Also includes 2 tracks from 'Come Taste The Band' which featured the late Tommy Bolin.
(BC 3/5)

FUTURE ECHOES OF THE PAST (live) - Uriah Heep
http://www.uriah-heep.com

A double live CD of Uriah Heep in full flight last year. Still going strong after all these years, hey? Who would have believed it? Not my father, that's for sure!

ASSUMED POSITIONS - The Pressure Cookies

Watch out for a new album from The Pressure Cookies. Tentatively titled 'Assumed Positions'.

LIVE BOOTLEGS - Jack Hammer (Pofadder)
http://www.rock.co.za/jackhammer

Coming soon is the Jack Hammer 'Live Bootleg' compilation CD of acoustic and electric live performances from the past 2 years.

1.1.2 BOOKS:

1110 pages packed full of artist biographies, single and album discographies with track listings, release dates, UK and US chart positions, catalogue numbers... a masterpiece work from somebody with obviously far too much time on his hands...

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SINGLES - General Editor: Paul Du Noyer (Dempsey Parr Books)

1000 greatest singles from the past 5 decades with detailed info on release dates, UK and US chart positions and a short review of each song. A wonderful reference work and an entertaining read.

1.2 UPCOMING EVENTS

M&M AND LBM NOMINATED FOR GRAMMYS

It’s Grammy Awards time again on February 21 in Los Angeles and this year’s nominations include two South African acts, Miriam Makeba (our own "M&M") and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, both previous Grammy winners. Miriam Makeba, the first SA artist to win a Grammy, shared the award with Harry Belafonte back in 1965 for their album ‘An Evening With Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba’, released two years before the massive success of her ‘Pata Pata’ single.

‘Homeland’, Ms Makeba’s comeback album, has been nominated in the (very broad) ‘Best World Music Album’ category and is up against albums by Youssou N'Dour, The Chieftains, Paul Winter and The Earth Band and Joao Gilberto, so it’s a tough category to win for "Mama Africa". ‘Homeland’ was produced by Cedric Samson and has been very well received as a welcome return to contemporary form for the legendary and highly respected SA singer and icon.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, who received their 10th nomination this year, also have one previous award, having won the ‘Best World Music Record’ Grammy in 1988 for the Paul Simon-produced ‘Shaka Zulu’ album. Paul Simon’s recent ‘You’re The One’ album has also been nominated in the Best Album category. This year, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and their Live ‘At The Royal Albert Hall’ have been nominated in the ‘Best Folk-Traditional’ category. The previous time they graced this category, the award was won by Pete Seeger. The time before that, Joseph Tshabalala and his world-famous Zulu harmony group lost out to a young Bob Dylan, then picking up his first Grammy!

Ladysmith Black Mambazo will probably not be attending the big LA bash due to them being booked to perform in Toronto on the same evening. In April 1999, at the start of their UK tour, Ladysmith Black Mambazo performed at the Brit Awards and also played to over 50 000 people at the ‘Concert For Linda’ at the Royal Albert Hall on the 10th April alongside George Michael, Paul McCartney and Tom Jones.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo then returned to the Royal Albert Hall to perform two sell-out shows, which were filmed and recorded. The resulting nominated album, 'Live At The Royal Albert Hall', was released in the USA early last year is also available on DVD in the USA only.

IMPROVISED PIECES FOR DOUBLE BASS AND ELECTRONICS

Well known double bass player Brydon Bolton (Benguela, Elx) and "sound sculpturist" James Webb (Traffic, Prayer) collaborate on Wed 17 January at the Armchair Theatre, Lower Main Road Observatory, in an evening of ambient exploration. What this entails is explained in the quote below:

‘Improvised pieces for double bass and electronics’ will be a performance not often heard in this town - the double bass signal will be split and processed live by James Webb, creating highly unique sonic scapes against which Brydon will play. The subtle beauty of this type of performance is that the only tone generator is the live instrument, but through electronically treating the sound, rich textured layers are built up creating a symphonic background ambience. The juxtaposition of the natural sound of the instrument against this background makes a very powerful musical statement. Treatment performances of this kind were pioneered by Brian Eno and have become a sub-genre of their own. (I’ll say! -Ed.)

Cape Town seldom has the chance to witness such performances by artists of this calibre, making this evening a rare and not to be missed once-off event.

Doors open at 21h00 and the performance will start at 22h00.

SALISBURY

Following the success of Metallica's 'S&M' album and Deep Purple's 30th Anniversary of the 'Concerto For Group And Orchestra' live CD released last year, Uriah Heep keyboard wizard Ken Hensley has decided to perform 'Salisbury' live with an orchestra in May in Hamburg, Germany. Full details here:

3.1 USA FOR AFRICA

A FEW SINGLES...

Bright Blue -- 'Open Your Eyes' -- Bang CD 018

This disc has three different songs, whereas the other CD singles I talk about below have different edits or mixes of one song. On 'Open Your Eyes' are: 'Wouldn't Miss It For The World', 'Open Your Eyes', and 'Peace Train' {not the Cat Stevens song - ed}.

These are three catchy, pleasant, and well-made songs, but no matter how nice they are they lack the punch of either 'Weeping' or 'Window On the World' -- I still wouldn't have missed buying this CD single, and still keenly look forward to the promised Best of Bright Blue, Brightest Blue, sometime in 2001.

Bright Blue on the net:

---------

Ladysmith Black Mambazo -- 'Shosholoza' -- Gallo CDSING 18

Sure, 'Shosholoza' is one of my favorite songs of all time and all nations, but which version is my favorite one? I can't say, but it is either the Inspiration version or the Original version. That's as far as I'm narrowing it down, but this CD single is a fun, if not inspirational, 17 minutes.

This CD includes four versions of this classic: the Inspiration
(gospel-sounding) mix, the Radio Edit, the Original, and the Club Mix.

---------

Casey B -- 'I Need Your Sex' -- DGR CDSDGR 44 C

This song is perfectly in tune with the sounds of teenaged girls today, but not the teenyboppers. Though it sounds teenybopperish it is a little too mature lyrically.

I bought this out of curiosity, and for a laugh, after reading Sugar's take on it. I also conclude that the next band or entertainer to break out of SA could easily well be Casey B.

The song sounds like the teenybopper stuff my daughter listens to, but the overly-explicit innuendo-laden lyrics disqualify it for the pre-pubescent girl market in my house, though I'm sure it fits in clubs. Anyway, the song has neat effects, Casey B has a fine voice, and that's an attention-catching metallic electronic warble-flutter gimmick they threw in.

I wish Casey B luck. If she makes it, maybe the Springbok Nude Girls (to name one band representing dozens I could list) won't be far behind. I'll enjoy the full entertainment package the world of South Africa has to offer, even Casey B.

The CD has three versions of 'I Need Your Sex': the Radio Edit, the Radio Dance Edit, and Ziggy's Club Mix.

3.2 CLASSIC ROCK

NIEMANDSLAND - KOOS KOMBUIS

Listening to Koos Kombuis's "Niemandsland", I wonder what the SABC's
guardian's of our morals would have thought. They banned Jeremy Taylor's "Mommy I'd like to Be" (which featured English and Afrikaans in the same song) for destroying the purity of the languages. Here amongst the predominantly Afrikaans lyrics are sufficient English words to make those old guardians turn in their retirement home armchairs. Not totally twee-lingual but enough to annoy some people.

One of the original "Alternatiewe Afrikaners", Koos broke just about every rule in the Code of Conduct for Afrikaans singers. Firstly he played "die duiwelsmusiek" (the devil's music) - rock, he also played "swartmensemusiek" (black man music) - reggae. And then he sang about drugs, sex and drink, three things that did not exist in South Africa, apparently. And to rub salt into the self-inflicted mental wounds of the populace, he uses pillars of Afrikanerdom to put his message across.

'Die Stem' (The National Anthem of the Old South Africa) is turned into a scathing attack on the political situation of the time while the old poem "Dis die Blond, Dis die Blou" is given a similar treatment.

The other thing he did was make great music while singing in Afrikaans. So dire was the popular Afrikaans music in the late 80's and early 90's that even nowadays some people who I mention Koos Kombuis to turn their noses up as they associate him with the twee, brainless music of then. They are the ones losing out. Koos plays jangling township guitar ('Paranoia', 'Liefdeskwela'), reggae ('Babilon Blues') classical guitar ('Liza se Klavier', 'Onder in my Whiskeyglas') and Spagetti Western type country music ('Bomskok Babalaas').

Forget any preconcieved idea you may have of Afrikaans music, this is
completely credible rock, the fact that it's sung in a politically conscious taal adds a dimension to it that you won't find anywhere else. Sit back and listen to the dawn of hip Afrikaans. "As Afrikaans net kon dans" (If only Afrikaans could dance) Kombuis wishes. Well it may not be dance music, but he certainly got it to take those first tentative steps to get the party going.

3.3 NEW RELEASES

STEADY ON - Moodphase 5ive

Although released in December, this smooth and spicy 12-song debut from the Cape’s newest funky six-piece live sensation has already proved its worth as a post-New Year chill down and cobweb-clearing salve and is going to make its mark during 2001. ‘Steady On’ unfolds like a musical trip around the better Long Street clubs and parties with a posse of Cape Town’s finest music makers including Lady E (Ernestine Deane) and D Form (Denver Turner) on vocals, rhymes, rapping and harmonies, ex-Boomslanger Brian de Goede on drums, Craig Damster on keyboards, and two ex-Honeymoon Suites - Bood Carver (bass) and Douglas Armstrong (trumpet).

From the triple opening burst of sunny energy and infectious beats that are ‘Brainstorm’, ‘Rise ‘n Shine’, and ‘Steady On’ to the closing First Beach trumpet symphony of ‘Geto @ Sunset’, ‘Steady On’ is the perfect early-2001 mixture of soul, jazz, funk, hip hop and dub (with a twist of Latin) and a worthy representation of the Moodphase 5ive’s eclectic and exciting new Cape sound and legendary live performances. Mixed and mastered by the hot Krushed & Sorted duo, and on African Dope Records, appropriately. Get in the Mood! (SS)

COOL RUNNINGS

Cool Runnings in Observatory, Cape Town is a wonderful venue. Excellent laid-back Jamaican-style decor, friendly staff and great food. Half the bar area is open to the sky and on a pleasant summer's evening it doesn't feel like you are in the middle of suburbia at all.

Just before you think you are reading the SA Restaurant Digest, let me tell you about 2 great musical evenings I had at Cool Runnings recently. Firstly on the 4th January Piet Botha and Jonathan Martin (Half of Jack Hammer, affectionately known as "Piet and the Kid") entertained the crowd to an evening of laid-back, mellow English and Afrikaans folk, pop and rock. They played songs from the whole of Piet's back catalogue including 'Russian and Chips' from the 1981 Wildebeest album. Piet and Jonathan are obvious blues enthusiatics, and they played a number of songs by Robert Johnson, such as 'Crossroads', 'Love In Vain' and 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down'. What is amazing is that Robert Johnson died in 1938 and is still considered a major influence by the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page.

On the 7th January, Henry Ate, fronted by Karma-Ann Swanepoel, rocked the capacity crowd with their own brand of good-time rock. Stunning stuff. And the drum solo (which turned into a duet when Karma joined in) was incredible.

Cool Runnings tell me that they will be regular venue for live music and we can expect to see some great SA artists over the next few months... see you there.

4. ROCK HISTORY
---------------

4.1 SHILOH'S CORNER

LITTLE WILLIE JOHN

"Lying in the back seat and listening to little Willie John" - the one part verse of a track called "Somewhere down the crazy river" by Robbie Robertson released in 1987. But who was Willie John? Little Willie John - probably one of the saddest stories in the book of soul. Willie was the classic victim of sudden fame that ended sadly in the year of 1966 at an engagement party when he stabbed a railroad worker with a knife. He ended up in the Washington state penitentiary on a manslaughter charge. He died in a wheelchair with pneumonia and only now is the genius of this little man - a pint sized hipster from Motorcity - being brought to true recognition.

One of the staple blues tracks that Little Willie John wrote was the ever penetrating "Need your love so bad", written in September 1955 and probably brought to fame through the British blues band Fleetwood Mac. Needless to say Little Willie John had a regular night bill with Jackie Wilson and Hank Ballard's Royals. He was spotted by Johnny Otis at the Detroit Paradise Theatre and led in the direction of Sid Nathan's King label. Willie sang with Count Basie and Duke Ellington at the age of seventeen. Little Willie John's claim to fame is the immortal "Fever", written by him in association with Davenport Cooley. This particular track reached number one in May 1956 on the R&B charts. Two years later Peggy Lee emulated "Fever" to world recognition. "Fever" became a standard blues track featured by Elvis Presley, The McCoys, Rationals and South African Otis Waygood Blues band (released on CD this month).

Willie had a powerful mid tempo vocal genius. His roots were quartet gospel and big band belting. He graduated from church to stage with absolute cocksure precocity. The first single he released was a track called "All around the world" which has been featured regularly by bands such as Grateful Dead and Country Joe Macdonald. With fourteen R&B hits on the King label he should have rightly been placed side by side with the soul brother geniuses of Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, James Brown etc. One of the finest releases in soul history was the album "Suffering with the blues" but unfortunately Little Willie was never to benefit from the royalties of this gem. In the mid sixties the godfather of soul, James Brown released an album "Thinking about Willie and a few nice things." To often Peggy Lee's name appears alongside the track "Fever". Let us not forget the short little man with the big voice.

4.2 SPOTLIGHT ON.... RODRIGUEZ

Until recently a mysterious figure, Sixto Rodriguez was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942 to Mexican immigrant parents - his first name chosen because he was their sixth child. Possessed of an distinctive voice, Rodriguez was a singer / songwriter steeped in the folk and blues traditions of his times and comparisons with Dylan and Donovan are inevitable and not undeserved. However, a profoundly working class upbringing in this industrial - and musical - heartland helped to make his work quite unique.

In April 1967 he recorded five original songs for the local Impact label. The A-side of the resulting single, 'I'll Slip Away' (later re-cut in the mid 70s), was an atmospheric number with considerable commercial potential, the B-side, 'You'd Like To Admit It', a contrasting folk-rocker in which the singer berated an ex-girlfriend for going off with a 'hick'. Unfortunately it became Impact's penultimate release before the label went under. Of the remaining tracks 'Forget It' would later be re-recorded for his first LP and 'To Whom It May Concern' for the second, but the intriguingly titled 'That Discotheque' remains unreleased in any form.

Undaunted, two years later Rodriguez found himself signed to the newly founded Hollywood label, Sussex (Bill Withers' first label), and the classic 'Cold Fact' LP emerged as their first release. Recorded in 1969 and skilfully produced by two other Impact refugees, Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey, it opened with the trippy but dark 'Sugar Man'. Over a subtle backing of acoustic guitar and electronic effects Rodriguez's lyrics were starkly honest:

"Sugar man, met a false friend / On a lonely dusty road / lost my heart when I found it / it had turned to dead black coal. / Silver magic ships you carry / Jumpers, coke, sweet Mary Jane / Sugarman, you're the answer / That makes my question disappear / Sugarman, 'cos I'm weary / Of those double games I hear."

The themes of many other songs on the album can be gleaned from the titles alone: 'Crucify Your Mind' (drugs), 'This Is Not A Song, It's An Outburst: Or, The Establishment Blues', 'Inner City Blues' and 'Rich Folks Hoax' (social unrest and political apathy), but there were also beautiful, bittersweet love songs in 'Forget It' and 'Jane S. Piddy'. Rumour has it (although Rodriguez has denied the connection) that 'Like Janis' was inspired by Janis Joplin. The brutally direct 'Only Good For Conversation' stands out as a great fuzz rocker, but for the most part the album gives prominence to Rodriguez's acoustic guitar and powerful lyrics.

'Coming From Reality', which was recorded at London's Lansdowne Studios, came in a striking die-cut gatefold sleeve. However, despite featuring some excellent musicianship - especially the lead guitar work courtesy of ace session man Chris Spedding - it somehow contrived to be less interesting than its predecessor. The most immediately striking tracks are undoubtedly those where the band is in full flight - 'Climb Up On My Music' and 'Heikki's Suburban Bus Tour' for instance - but the more restrained acoustic numbers repay repeated listening. 'Sandrevan Lullaby - Lifestyles' (the title is a conflation of the names of Rodriguez's two daughters) and 'Cause' were both subtly orchestrated and their lyrics echoed the dark emotional themes of the debut album.

Three further tracks recorded in the mid-seventies - a new version of the Impact single 'I'll Slip Away', 'Can't Get Away' and 'Street Boy' - were each the equal of any of his previous works, but none were released at the time. After neither album made any impact in the States, Rodriguez seemed to simply disappear. That, however, was really only the beginning of the most extraordinary phase of his career. When, in 1970, some enterprising folk at Festival Records imported 400 copies of 'Cold Fact' to Australia they rapidly sold out. The LP was subsequently issued by A&M in 1971 and as its fame spread it gradually acquired a cult following amongst the disaffected youth both there and in countries like New Zealand and South Africa. When it was finally issued on CD in those markets it went platinum and Rodriguez was so well known by the beginning of the 80s that he even toured Australia with Midnight Oil.

After disappearing into temporary obscurity once more - during which increasingly bizarre rumours circulated about his demise - he recently returned to South Africa for a sell-out stadium tour. Both albums have subsequently been reissued in all formats in those countries, while a CD 'Rodriguez: At His Best' (Blue Goose VPCD 6748) collects together highlights from both LPs and adds the three unreleased mid-seventies tracks for good measure. The A-side of the Impact single, meanwhile, is available on 'The Best Of Impact Records' (Collectables CD COL 5883).

NEW VENUE FOR OPPIKOPPI

In the six years since its inception, the five stages with musicians, DJs, bands, performers, comedians, dancers and "other impromptu gutter revolutionaries" that comprise the OppiKoppi SA Music Festival has grown into the largest outdoor music event in SA and probably one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere. In 2000 the Festival was successfully staged again a week later in the Western Cape, ensuring that the Cape leg would become an annual event. But the Northern leg of the Festival has grown too fast and the staging of the festival in its free and unfettered Bushveld location was becoming a logistical and financial headache.

The organizers explained: "The only way one could make the project more workable was to move the festival closer to Gauteng even though Oppikoppi had almost become synonymous with its Bushveld surroundings. However, it was made slightly more bearable by the fact that the move of the mammoth August festival would not influence the smaller festivals hosted at Oppikoppi. Therefore prospective bushveld campers will still have the opportunity to break away to Oppikoppi (in the bushveld) for the much more intimate Easter festivals and other small events."

The organizers then looked at various sites around the Gauteng area for a venue fairly close to Johannesburg and Pretoria. The favourite was the lush Fountains Valley resort on the edge of Pretoria. The subsequent approval and support of the Pretoria City Council made this option a reality and this beautiful and accessible venue will hopefully play host to many OppiKoppi Festivals in years to come. It is also hoped that the move to the Fountains Valley will enable the introduction of day passes for the first time ever, further assisting in making the festival more accessible to a wider audience. The organizers added: "If it means we have to move closer to Eskom power to get enough electricity for the amps, it seems like a worthwhile sacrifice!".

PS. All those non-SA music fans living near to Fountains in Pretoria, may we suggest a break away at this Bushveld resort where it is coincidentally going to be very quiet around the weekend of the 9-12th August.

OPPIKOPPI 2001 DATES:
9th-12th August: Pretoria, Fountains Valley
17th-19th August: Worcester, Kleinplasie

WHERE IS 'TAJ MAHALA'?

Since being named SA Rock Digest Album of 2000, as well as receiving similar plaudits across the SA rock media spectrum, that enigmatic Sharkbrother album with the red cover has become a much sought after but unfortunately not so available album. However, this being the age of the Net and all that, it is immediately purchasable online at http://www.oneworld.co.za and www.cdzone.co.za. or directly from the group’s website (http://www.sharkbrother.com). Offline it is available in Look & Listen stores nationwide (and hopefully soon in Musica outlets), Seedys in Hatfield Pretoria (012 362 5841), and various other indie outlets.

Sharkbrother released a press statement explaining that they are very much an independent SA band and as such do not have the resources to pursue traditional marketing and sales channels. In most cases where the adjective "indie" is used in the description of a band it refers to their being signed to one of the independent labels, however in some cases as with Sharkbrother, they are not signed at all. They do not have either a record or a distribution deal. Which makes the critical success of ‘TajMahala’ so impressive and definitely a cause for optimism as 2001 begins. (SS)
