SAMA-TIME AND THE PUNNING IS LAZY

I was thinking about all those usual headlines around this time of the year when the SAMA Awards nominations first appear. Like the one above, or "In The SAMA-Time", Or "SAMA the best SA musicians are going to win". They were previously called the FNB SAMA Awards, and we had a lot of fun figuring out what FNB could stand for. But now it’s the Standard Bank SAMA’s, and you can’t do much with that. But these awards are no longer the industry joke they used to be. Those behind the scenes are constantly trying to find newer, fairer and broader ways to honour a wide cross section and selection of those in SA releasing new music.

So the judging process has been fine-tuned and the categories moved around a little, so the nominations list, released this week, seems to be as good, fair and representative as we can expect. I’m sure there are thousands of disappointed music people out there who are not on these lists, believe they should be, and think these selections suck. But hey! That’s the creative process for you, it’s a lot like sport. You try your best, but there’s someone else out there trying their best as well. So someone has to keep score. Shame hey, sorry!!

But well done to all those who cracked it, like Jabu Khanyile who got four nominations, three of them with Bayete, the other as co-producer of Bambata’s album ‘1906’ with Sipho Sithole. TKZee currently hold the SAMA record with four gongs in one evening. TK (no relation to Zee) and Paul Hanmer each got three for their albums ‘TKO’ and ‘Playola’ respectively, as did the Bambata album.. The rest of the nominees are spread out over a broad spectrum of gospel to rock categories, and other associated skills (covers, videos, producers etc). We’re not going to run a full list of all the nominees here, and can’t seem to find a SAMA website where these nomination lists should be available for public viewing (Hullo? It’s 2001!). But here are just a few that are relevant to the "Rock" part of our newsletter’s title:

Category N1 - Best Pop Album:
Boo! - Naughties
Watershed - In The Meantime
Just Jinger - Strange World
Coleske - Faith In Love
Henry Ate - Torn & Tattered

Best Rock Album:
Springbok Nude Girls - Relaxzor
Wonderboom - Never Ever Ever
Saron Gas - Fragile
Tree - 63

(Why only four nominees, does Standard Bank get charged by the entrant?)

Best Pop/Rock Single:
Dreamshop - Satisfy
M.I.C. - I Am Yours
Casey B - I Need Your Sex
Helen Desbois - Anything
Dq (Deo Quorum) - Friend

(Spot the obvious mistake!! Clue: "I need your passion like its going out of fashion". And no Semisane?)

The winners will be announced at a function, probably a "glittering" one with weak jokes, in Sandton on April 5. If you don’t know the exact location, then don’t worry, you weren’t invited. (SS)

THOUGHTS ON THE GRAMMYS

Yeah, I watched them. Out of morbid curiosity. I’m mostly sorry I did. But anyway, here’s some observations made when my eyes were actually open and my jaw in its normal position. Shelby Lynne (32) won the "Best New Artist" award and immediately says that it took her six albums and 13 years to get there? Madonna opens the show with a lavish production of ‘Music’ and then gets no awards at all (besides the highly regarded "Best Album Packaging" prize), disproving that seemingly unbreakable law that if you perform at the Grammys, you go home with one. Not so Madonna who really wanted to have a celebratory snog with new husband Guy, sitting bemused next to her. She even sneakily put the word "Snatched" on the registration plate of the limo she drove onstage in (without Ali G). Moby also performed ‘Natural Blues’ with Jill Scott (Heron?) and that weird Blue Man Band, but got zip for his ‘Play’ album.

Steely Dan won three awards, including the most prestigious ‘Album of the Year’ Grammy for ‘Two Against Nature’. Excuse me??? Walter Becker and Donald Fagan looked equally amazed. It was at that moment that Eminem realised he’d been suckered. The controversial rapper arrived at the Grammys touted (and feared) as the new Elvis. He won the ‘Best Rap Album’ award, proving that he is "a white boy who sings like a black man" (remember those words?) while his words and aggression speak for the disenchanted American youth, while freaking out their parents. But he should have known better than to trust "The Academy".

Instead of getting his patronizing speech over and done with early in the show, Michael Green, that bearded president of the "Recording Academy" comes on stage and first announces Dr Dre (Eminem’s mentor) as ‘Producer of the Year’, instructing him to "Stand up Dr Dre, stand up". He then launched into this headmasterly "Hey, we’re cool with this controversial stuff and fully support Eminem’s (or anyone’s) right to free speech, okay kids?". After such a build up, we are "treated" to Eminem duetting with Elton John on ‘Stan’! We wanted and expected Dido singing those bits of her ‘Thank You’ song, as she definitely deserved to appear. Instead we get the Liberace of his generation, dressed, in his usual self-parodying style, in a truly offensive and inappropriate pink polka dot suit and crap, dangly earrings. His appearance, alongside Eminem’s clearly toned-down lyrics, turned ‘Stan’ into a slice of Hollywood sludge. Sis!

Elton then gave his new, young colleague a big, friendly, showbiz hug, thereby destroying Eminem’s well-developed and hard-earned cred among his hip hop peers and devoted fans (or maybe not). Boy George writing in the Express summed it up as "Keeping your friends close, and your Eminems closer". But then, as the final body blow to young Marshall, he had to stand off stage (but on camera) and watch as Stevie Wonder and Bette Midler revealed that ‘Two Against Nature’, Steely Gran’s first album in 20 years, is the best and most relevant album of the year. Sure Santana did the same thing for the oldies last year, but ‘Supernatural' wasn’t a rehash of ‘Inner Secrets’. The SA nominees didn’t do too well either, Miriam Makeba, Cedric Sampson and their ‘Homeland’ album lost to Joao Gilberto in the ‘Best World Album’ group and Ladysmith Black Mambazo to Dave Alvins in the ‘Traditional Folk’ one.

Good things included U2 winning ‘Best Song’ and ‘Best Record’ for their deserving ‘Beautiful Day’ single, as well as the unofficial ‘Best Acceptance Speech’ gong for saying: "I should thank God and my Mother, but I just of think of the Creator saying, 'No don't thank me for that song - it's got no hook, and the chorus is weak. They'll never play it on the radio.' Thank you for playing this on the radio." Johnny Cash won a Grammy for his version of ‘Solitary Man’ on his classic album of the same name, which made up for all the other strange decisions. The compere for the evening (John Stewart?) was pretty funny and very brave, especially with all those Puff Daddy jokes ("It’s an honour just to get indicted"). But otherwise they really should call it the "Grannies". (SS)

RETRO FRESH UPDATE

Out this week (26th Feb) is the long awaited retrospective by arguably one of the finest singer songwriters of the last three decades ... Lesley Rae Dowling. "Conspirare" (latin for "breathe together") brings together 18 of her greatest songs including "The Spaniard", "Living without conversation", "Fallen angel" and "Grips of emotion" as well as, for the first time, four tracks from her 1994 SAMA award winning album "Unbounded Waters". Liner notes by Dave Chislett, and song by song comment by Lesley plus some rare unseen photos.
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/lesleyraedowling

Due out in March after nearly six months of planning is the band approved classic debut album by Hawk... "African Day". The album features all the original tracks, digitally remastered and includes four previously unreleased live tracks from 1971 "African Rondo", "Kissed by the sun", "The Hunt" and "Look up brother" (courtesy of David Marks and 3rd Ear Music). The extended artwork features rare photos, poster art and extensive liner notes by noted music journalist Owen Coetzer.

Also out in March is the seminal Falling Mirror album "Johnny calls the chemist" complete with two rare in-studio demos, an unreleased track plus the legendary "Chemist" video as a bonus for hardcore fans. The controversial artwork is included as well as some previously unseen bizarre pics, in-depth liner notes by the Digest's own Stephen "Sugar" Segerman assisted by his co-editor Brian Currin. Songs about madness, alienation, dark obsession and substance abuse abound with some of the most spectacular guitarwork courtesy of Alan Faull... don't miss this release.

The end of March will see the release of the pantsula/ two tone/ ska-tinged retrospective by mid 80's group The Dynamics. This compilation covers all three band lineups and included the beloved "Thugs" as well as live tracks, demos and alternate takes plus the usual extensive liner notes, pics and stuff.

IN THE WORKS..... one of the most requested albums is the debut album by Suck. The good news is that the album has been remastered, we have made contact with two of the three surviving members and lordy, lordy have discovered some stunning photos of the band's controversial (not to mention auto-destructive) 1971 Johannesburg City Hall concert which involved tons of Marshall amps, a pair of axes, female shop dummies, a cat of nine tails and........ watch this space.......

Next up is the 'Galactic Vibes' album by Freedoms Children, remastering will start soon and will be overseen by guitarist Julian Laxton, expect this aural extravaganza in May....
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/freedomschildren

For those of the more Alt/ punk persuasion you can expect a first time ever retrospective of those stormtrooping pop warriors Dog Detachment which will include 15 tracks spanning 11 years, additional tracks in MP3 format and a full multimedia package.

Also in various stages of Retro preproduction are albums from Peach, Sweatband, Circus, Abstract Truth, Ellamental plus more from Hawk, Otis Waygood, Freedom's, Falling Mirror, éVoid and Lesley Rae Dowling.

WANTED.... Still looking for any contact details or whereabouts of Suck guitarist Stephen "Gil" Gilroy ..... also looking for contact details for ex-rock journos Graham Boynton, Nigel Wrench (both in the UK now) and Patrick Lee.... anyone out there know the whereabouts of Omega Limited axeman Louis Greeff?... Looking for info/ pics on Hammak, Coloured Rain, Rhodesian band Fruits of Loom (circa 1969), Web, Hedgehoppers Anonymous, Toad. Finally I would like all of you in Digestworld to mail me what you would like to see reissued in the future... we'll do our best (subject of course to the whims of the major labels).

BURN - VENESSA NOLAN

Singer songwriter Venessa Nolan has released 'Burn' on the Rhythm Records label. Slow & powerful songs penetrate the brain and leave the listener (me) gasping for more. Favourite tracks so far: 'Losing Control' (this track would have been perfect on the "City Of Angels" soundtrack), 'Fragile', 'Don't Drag Me Down' and 'I Confess'.

If you like Alanis, the Cranberries, Peter Gabriel, U2, Liesl Graham, then you will love this. (BC)

Off The Edge guitarist Peter Hanmer's (no relation to jazz pianist Paul Hanmer) new project, Age Of Innocence, has been released. Visit their self-designed website for all the info on the new stunning folk-rock album 'Nowhere Land'. The site also includes a few MP3 samples. This album includes a cover of the epic 'St Aidans' originally released on Off The Edge's 'Just Another Band' in March 2000. Other highlights include 'The Winter and the Summer' (originally from 1973's 'Bursting At The Seams' by Strawbs), 'Dreams' (not the Fleetwood Mac song) and 'Still Want You Back' (a powerful bluesy song). 4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

ROY BUCHANAN

September 23, 1939. God smiled down on the San Joaquin valley, in Ozark, Arkansas, with the birth of junior Roy, son of a Pentecostal preacher that lived his mission preaching to exiled southerners. Buchanan learned the steel guitar from a tender age of seven and by fifteen had left home, heading for Los Angeles and San Francisco. His first break came when James Burton stepped out of The Dale Hawkins band after introducing the anthemic lick that gave Hawkins his only major hit, Suzie Q. The rockabilly fifties gave Roy the space to perform his classic on the top licks with the telecaster. From Dale Hawkins he joined his cousin, Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks, and parted some of his individual techniques to Robbie Robertson (The Band), the group's permanent guitarist. Roy's experimentation with feedback and fuzz, although progressive alienated his position from fellow group members. He officially gave up playing in 1961 and turned to teaching guitar at the Crossroads club, in Bladensburg, Maryland.

By 1968 he formed The Soundmasters and did session work on the eastern seaboard. Most notably Roy did a number of sessions with the notorious fiddle player, Charlie Daniels and although never mentioned, often performed for Dylan and Leonard Cohen. But the magic came at the midnight hour when Roy would step into various blues halls and play till the sun rose. Roy's stature even attracted masters such as Les Paul who came to Maryland to hear him play. He was probably the only musician to ever sell out at the Carnegie hall without a single record on the market. By 1969 the Rolling Stones had offered him the job of replacing Brian Jones, and John Lennon had asked him to sit in on a Plastic Ono Band session. Roy blew this by OD'ing on downers. He starred in two TV specials (known as 'The Best unknown guitarist in the world').

Yet Roy hated success and preferred the small bars around his home. May 1973 Roy toured Europe and did a successful live session at the Marquee. Ironically due to the fact the Roy hated studio albums, they released an album called Live Stock which was his finest release todate and with it came a lengthy version of Neil Young's Down by the River which contains some of Roy's most impressive solo's. With thirteen albums under his belt, Roy's last days were a struggle as he tried to free himself from the drug and alcohol abuse that had plagued him for years. In 1988 he was thrown into prison very close to his Virginia home in Reston, after a drunken brawl in one of the local pubs. The next morning they found that he had hung himself. Although his wife Judy had challenged the conclusion of his death it remained consistent with other suicide attempts in the past, including a history of self-destructive behaviour.

Roy has left us with a legacy of blues that stands separate in nature and style to any other axe men of the sixties. His ability to play from the top and hold the note even higher and longer than any Clapton slowhand, gives him the unique position of being probably one of the top ten guitarists ever to walk this earth. Of note one of the most memorable instrumentals of Roy, The Messiah will come again, has been emulated in various tones by other musicians such as Gary Moore (Parisian Walkways) or Carlos Santana (Europa). Roy always claimed his Live in Japan album as his finest work, where he featured a chilling version of Hey Joe as a tribute to Hendrix. Once asked how he developed his style he said with a straight face he was half wolf.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

THE DES AND DAWN COLLECTION

Folk music can be a guy playing guitar and singing 'Michael Row Your Boat Ashore' -- or it can be dangerous stuff. Apparently Des and Dawn were considered dangerous, enjoying as they did the dubious distinction of having some songs banned.

This disc opens with one of my favorite songs, 'Seagull's Name Was Nelson'. Ostensibly, this one is about an oil spill, and I do see that, but I also see the possibility that Des and Dawn Lindberg are singing about a certain man coming ashore from Robben Island.... Whatever it's about, it's upbeat folk with meaningful lyrics and an immediately accessible singalong chorus.

'Two Little Boys' {The Rolf Harris song with an SA twist -ed} is a rousing song like the old hits 'Cry of the Wild Goose' and 'Greenback Dollar'. It is about two boyhood friends, John and Jannie, who end up on opposite sides in the Boer War. Other shining moments on the CD are the two David Marks contributions: the muscular 'Mountains of Men', which shows what can be done with a powerful song, one man, and one guitar, and the riveting 'Cool Clean Calm and Still'.

Some songs are merely pretty pieces, such as 'What's The Difference' and 'Sometime Loving'. But every track on 'The Des and Dawn Collection' has some merit: intelligent lyrics, Significance, beautiful melody and harmony, humor, or a social issue.

Des does most of the singing on this disc, though 'Be Not Too Hard' and 'Whose Garden Was This' showcase Dawn's lovely voice, and she and Des trade leads in 'Jerusalem of Gold'. Otherwise, Dawn plays guitar, harmonizes with Des, and sings background vocals.

Because the folk classics well-covered here (Tom Paxton's 'Whose Garden Was This' and 'Rambling Boy', 'Circle Game', 'Sea Cottage', and others) are standard repertoire for any hootenanny-bound folkie, this collection can be listened to as an introduction to folk music. Or the CD can be heard as a testimony to the adaptable power of folk music. 'This Land is Your Land' is a song I have always associated with the "purple mountain majesties" of 'America the Beautiful', but here it has South African places sprinkled throughout and becomes a South African song. 'Die Gezoem Van Bye' is Woody's 'The Big Rock Candy Mountain', with some Afrikaans lyrics added -- and South African folk sounds good to me.

A few songs deal with environmental issues. Perhaps Des and Dawn felt they could speak of these concerns more freely than they could social issues, or perhaps it's a sign of the times these songs are from (the 'Collection' ranges from 1966 to about 1972). However, only on the surface does 'Cool Clean Calm and Still' touch on river pollution. Meanings shimmer deeper into that song than in the dated 'Down By the River'. Even though eternal vigilance will keep our environment clean, these environmental issues have become ways of life more than rallying points for protest songs. After all, it has been decades since the Cuyahoga River in Ohio caught fire.

One may look at the 'Des and Dawn Collection' as an excellent folk primer and be entirely correct. One may also look at it as a testimony to how powerful and universal folk music is, adaptable the people of many lands, and one would be correct again. Can a couple of people playing guitars and singing folksongs be dangerous? What did Woody Guthrie have written on his guitar?

A couple of closing notes: one, I have increased my knowledge of Afrikaans in that I now know what a kleinhuisie is; and two, when Des and Dawn and Gallo send royalties to the owner of 'My Sweet Lord', to whom do they send the check?

JOHN SAMSON
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

KANT'UNJANI? - ZIA

While Hotline was pretty much a South African household name during the 80's, Zia seemed to be one of those bands that you had heard about, but never heard. The similarities between Hotline and Zia are numerous. Both played township jive based pop rock, both featured a multiracial line-up and both had white female vocalists with very powerful voices.

Musically 'Kant'unjani?' is upbeat and vibrant drawing on the lively township beat. Just like the coversleeve, the music is colourful, blending the black and white cultures on vinyl with proportional representation.

Cindy Alter's voice is certainly the centrepiece of this record. Her strong vocals add rock credibility to songs that would possibly have never crossed the border from Soweto to Johannesburg. Along with P.J. Powers, she made black music pale enough for our apartheid soaked ears, yet kept it tanned enough so as not to be reclassified.

Funnily, it's the highly passionate cover of the Eagle's 'Desperado' that is the sell out track. At odds with the African feel of the album, this is pure rock that seems to have been tacked on to the end of the album to gain that extra white listener. That said, this track would be a stand out track on a straight forward rock album.

If you like your Hotline and Mango Groove albums, then it's worth trying to find some Zia. As the storms of apartheid began to abate, this was one of the first glimpse of rainbow that was to follow, colourful and full of promise, unfortunately for Zia (and most S.A. bands) there was no pot of gold at the end.

5.LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
----------------------------

WHAMMY BAR 16 FEBRUARY

My Last Ex kicked off the evening to a small crowd. A three piece
band, they play a mixture of new wave punk, reminiscent of Blink 182, and grungy sounding rock. With their trademark white shirts and red
caps (apparently a sponsorship from some or other clothing company) they put on quite a lively show, adding a few jokes and one liners in between songs. Unfortuanatly they suffered from an unbalanced sound with the guitar and the vocals a bit on the soft side. Towards the end of their set, they introduced the second band of the night, Ghost, rather sarcastically as the "the big boys".

I must admit, initially I was a bit apprehensive about the four guys from Ghost mainly because of their age. I mean I wasn't even sure if they were allowed to be in the Whammy bar. They came on stage, the vocalist said a few nervous words and then they started playing.
This is where I was quite pleasantly surprised. Their sound is a mixture of influences, ranging from Limp Bizkit (they did two Limp Bizkit covers) to Bush to Radiohead to Pantera. The results are some great moments in a bunch of songs that are, perhaps not the most original in style, but have the potential to develop into something really great.

Towards the end of their set they had a small crowd of moshers going at it in front of the stage, and they definitely seemed to have impressed most of the people present. Incidently they hail from Malmesbury (makes you wonder what the hell goes down in Malmesbury!), so it wasn't a bad show for their third gig in Cape Town. I think if these four young guys can keep it together and maybe start looking the part (nothing a few tattoos and nipple rings won't solve), they will go a long way to being a great hardcore band.

THE JAM
43 De Villiers Road, District Six, Cape Town - next to The Shack

March:

Thurs 1: Sugardrive: Catch the boys at the Jam for a rare Cape Town performance.

Fri 2: Max Normal: For those who missed out on the man’s previous performance where over 600 happy punters partied well into the night, (and the Jam bursting out of its seams), this one’s a definite must. This cabaret style hip-hop outfit from Jo'burg featuring Waddy Tudor Jones (Vocals), Sibot (Turntables), Marc Buchanan (Bass) and Sean Ou Tim on drums has taken Cape Town by storm.

Sat 3: The Awakening: Having more than saturated the South Africa market with the unprecedented success of 6 number 1 singles, constant chart and radio play, extensive media and television coverage, critically acclaimed music videos (one of which was sampled and screened on MTV Europe), The Awakening have released their fourth full-length album, 'The Fourth Seal of Zeen'. Since their birth in 1995, the band has retained a suitably "gothic/underground" persona and outlook, yet they have achieved a cult status that rivals the major label rock bands. Catch them on stage at The Jam as part of their nationwide tour, promoting the new album.

Wed 7: Boo!: SA’s number one Monkey Punkers are at it again on the Jam centre stage with their notorious thiatrix. Come and join the band before they leave on a four-month tour of The States and Europe with confirmed gigs in Brussels, Atlanta, New York, London and Paris. Doors open at 9 and R30 covert charge.

Fri 9: Stanton Warriors: They have been commissioned to remix some of the biggest dance tracks in recent times, including Basement Jaxx "Jump & Shout", Fatboy Slim (with Macy Gray) "Demons", Azzido Da Bass "Doom’s Night" and The Artful Dodger "Please don’t turn me on". To date they have just one release of their own (new tune out in March). "Da Virus" was released last year, as a bass driven beat feast sampling Whodini’s "Mr. Magic", on the Mob Records label, which is manned by Tim Binns and Tayo.

Sat 10: Homegrown: This monthly event has been, from the word go, one of the most popular events on the Cape Town dance calendar. Krushed and Sorted, Algorythm and Sublime come together under one roof for an evening of 100% kick ass Drum & Bass.

Sat 17: Boogie Down Knights: The Darker Shadz of Phunk Crew are back at the Jam with one of the most popular hip hop events this side of the equalizer. Join us for a peek into the colourful world of hip hop with B -Boy floor shows, Graffiti expose and two international Dj’s alongside the best of our local spinners.

Tue 20: Fetish: Since the formation of Fetish in May 1996, and the independent release of their debut album, the band have grabbed the appreciative attention of SA music fans and critics alike.

Sat 24: Irma Records: Funkromania IRMA, a New World and Funk label from Italy presents a showcase of material with DJ Myles, Blunted Stuntman, Bob, Simon, Omar, The Boogie Man and Honey B. R30.

Fri 30: Alternative Nation, The long awaited return: After a year’s absence and eight packed-out events, the crew returns with an unpredictable and exciting mix-up of rock, hip hop, crossovers and a shot of drum & bass and breaks.

Sat 31: Algorythm: The state of Drum 'n Bass in South Africa and abroad has gone through countless mutations. One thing is for certain, it is not influenced by trends... it sets trends. The people involved with this music are passionate about it and live a 24/7 Drum 'n Bass lifestyle. It is a subculture all on its own.

INFO ON JIM REEVES IN SOUTH AFRICA

Hello and greetings from New Zealand!

I am working with an American Author, Larry Jordon, on a complete works of Jim Reeves’ life. As you know Jim spent quite a bit of time in South Africa. He did two concert tours, the last one being in 1962 with Chet Atkins and Floyd Cramer and the Blue Boys Band (Anyone remember their photos on the backs of our cereal boxes? - Old Ed). Jim also appeared in ‘Kimberly Jim’ a SA movie that was scripted and shot in SA.

Larry has some great pictures of the tour and several good interviews. However we don’t know the concert dates and we would love some personal memories from people who may have attended the concerts. It has also been reported that Jim made the front page of a number of papers and we would love to get copies of that. A whole chapter in the book is devoted to his South African experience. Larry Jordon knew Jim’s wife Mary Reeves for 30 years. He has the support and approval of the Reeves family and has completed 400 interviews for the book so far. Larry is also a very experienced radioman and has completed many interviews with most of the famous in Nashville. Jim Reeves had a great love for the people of South Africa and his lounge was decorated with all sorts of things that he collected from your Country.

Best regards
Rob Germon
mailto:rjg@paradise.net.nz

{Jim Reeves also recorded a full album of Afrikaans songs, called ‘Jy Is My Liefling’. This is still one of the most sought after Reeves albums by his still huge and adoring following. - ed}

CROCODILE HARRIS

I am French and I want to know if you are able to find for me an original CD copy or a CDR copy of CROCODILE HARRIS: GIVE ME THE GOOD NEWS (the album)? I personally have the tape of this album and I would love to have the CD.

Thanks a lot for your help

{This album is not available on CD, but Crocodile Harris tells me that there will be a CD of his greatest hits released shortly - ed}

JOEY THE LIPSTICK COLLECTOR

I'm a crazy oldies-fan from Austria!

Always I remembered a song including something like "lipstick collector" and some days ago I found one of your sites where I could get the wanted information about a singer called "DENNIS" {Billy Forrest under yet another guise - ed} which performed this song: "Joey the lipstick collector - 1971".

Late in the evening I found this song on Napster. It's exactly the song I was looking for, but the name of the artist seems completely different: THE WALL STREET DIVERSION

I couldn't find any information about this band in the net.

With best regards from Austria

Fred

{I tried Napster and could'nt find this song at all... lots of Joeys and Lipstick songs, but no 'Joey The Lipstick Collector'... but I guess I will survive - ed}

THE EDGE

Does anyone have, or is anyone interested in the complete series of "The Edge". This is a series which was broadcast in seven episodes on SABC-TV in 1992, which portrayed the History of SA Pop Music. It was written by Gus Silber, and presented by Ian Warren and Alex Jay.
